A NEW LEGACY
BY CHEYENNE HITTLE
People come and go like the wind, but the legacy they leave behind is lasting. This year, we celebrated new achievements and the beginning of a new era at Washburn University. When President JuliAnn Mazachek took office, she wasted no time implementing transformative programs that will shape the future of Washburn.
This book is a reflection of that new era. It captures the spirit of change through its cover art. Through its page design and color usage there is an additional element that represents the future and leads on to take a peek at the next step.
The colors and design of this book are a tribute to Washburn’s tradition and spirit, with various shades of blue and a minimalist theme, reflecting both the history and the bright future ahead.
Due to the late start of our project in the spring semester, we weren't able to capture every moment of the year as we had hoped. Many of the pictures come from submissions by clubs and organizations around campus. We did our best to ensure that every corner of our Washburn community was represented as much as possible in the limited space.
Limits only exist to be pushed beyond. The students, faculty and staff ensure that limits are constantly pushed. Without this there would not be change and improvements that are constantly happening at Washburn.

FIRST GEN
We Are F1rst started a new event called First-Generation Fridays. Students were able to eat free pizza, find a community and adopt wisdom from speakers.
The event occured on the first Friday of each month. A first-generation speaker with connections to Washburn shared their first generation story at each event. The speaker for the first meeting was President JuliAnn Mazachek.
At Washburn, a first-generation student is someone in which neither parent completed a bachelor’s degree. It is a common misconception that if a parent obtained an associate’s degree, or if a sibling has a bachelors degree that they are not considered a firstgeneration student—this is false.
According to Jenny Lieurance, first-generation specialist, about 47% of Washburn’s students are first-generation. With this large population, some staff felt it was necessary that the students had guidance throughout their college journey.
“They have helped me a lot these past two weeks. I thought it was great and inspiring,” said Maliya White, freshman radiology major.
The idea for First-Generation Fridays stemmed from the high amount of first-generation students but also time constraints of students not being able to attend the We are F1rst meetings.

Barnabas Tea Company, owned by Kevin Christiansen, is Topeka’s favorite tea shop. Having won the Best of Topeka award several times, they know how to create both a good environment and a good tea.
Every year, Chartwells, who oversees all of the campus foods, sends out a survey to see what the most wanted food item is at Washburn. Shon Spader, the director of Chartwells, found out the most wanted item for the past several years was boba tea. Washburn wanted to partner with a local organization, and that’s when they found Barnabas.
Barnabas has established friendships with tea estate owners all over the world. Christiansen said he can actually show you a picture of the field from where a specific cup of tea came. Each cup of tea Barnabas makes is ethnic and authentic, coming from areas that many Washburn students are also from.

After the first performance, Hedgecorth went off the stage for a few minutes and came back with a different dress. The second performance by Hedgecorth was after the song “La Tarara,” which was performed by Rojas.

Hedgecorth introduces the history of Flamenco and Hispanic culture to the audience through documentary films. Her first dance started with “Tangos de Triana.”
HISPANIC HERITAGE
Special
guests from 45 Grados Flamenco performed in the Neese Gray Theatre. The event was sponsored by several Washburn departments and supported by grants supporting cross-cultural exchange.
Flamenco is a Spanish dance style that uses heel clicks and claps. The 45 Grados Flamenco showcase, “Orígenes,” conveyed Flamenco’s cultural blending over centuries through singing, musical instruments, dancing, documentary films and projecting visuals.
Melinda Hedgecorth was the main dancer of the event. As Hedgecorth’s intricate footwork beat rhythms across the wooden platform, there were images displayed behind the dancers that depicted Flamenco’s emergence from Moorish, Roma, African and Andalusian influences in southern Spain. Musical selections likewise reflected the genre’s evolution from ancient chants to fusion with modern styles such as Gozyazi, Tangos de Triana, Alegrias, La Tarara, Nana, Abre la Puer Nina and Farruca.
True to Flamenco’s expressive nature, 45 Grados chose “La Tarara,” honoring a “crazy girl” – symbolizing outcasts.

KANSAS DAY
Washburn University honors Kansas' birthday by having a guest speaker come to campus. Davis Hammet was the guest speaker for the 2024 Kansas Day Celebration.
On Jan. 29, 2024, about 30 members of the Topeka community gathered in the Shawnee room of the Memorial Union to listen to Hammet speak.
When conversing with each other, people mentioned wanting to be inspired by his words. Hammet first came to Topeka in 2013 when he was working for an organization called Planting Peace. They made a plan to paint a house rainbow as a statement of activism supporting gay rights. The house is located directly across from the Westboro Baptist Church, which is known for being against gay rights.

Washburn University hosted a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. According to Eric Grospitch, vice president of student life, this lecture is a call to action and an opportunity to engage in a meaningful conversation.
“This event is a testament to our students and to the values that we hold dear at Washburn: discourse, respect and the belief that education is a powerful force for positive change. It’s an opportunity for us to come together not only as a community to learn from each other, living our motto and action, ‘not for ourselves alone’,” Grospitch said.

DAY GIVING
Previous records for donations were crushed during Washburn’s annual Day of Giving. Many departments participated in the event raising money to fund various campus projects, technological upgrades and student scholarships.
In celebration of Washburn’s 159th birthday, numerous records were shattered.
Over $450,000 were raised across the board, topping last year’s record by over $100,000. The highest number of donations and gifts came from projects like the School of Business Dean’s Fund, Jim Concannon Deanship and SOL Summer Public Interest Stipends. Whether it’s giving $1,000 or $1, every donation is impactful and a generous contribution in a bigger picture.

Much of the festival was held in the Topeka & Shawnee Public Library where various hosts led workshops. Each year the festival focuses its workshops on a specific theme aligned with WUmester. This year’s theme is community and belonging.
“The whole thing about WIFI is giving Midwestern filmmakers a place to show work. I want to make filmmaking and everything film accessible to the general public. In honor of the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision, vanessa german created a variety of art pieces to display. The Mulvane Art Museum presented those art pieces this spring. The art pieces in german's display are multimedia and they were created for a rememberence of the Brown v. Board of Education decision 70 years ago. To make the art the artist worked and talked with a variety of community members to gather experiences. This was to ensure that
the pieces represented how the community felt about the movement. The way the art pieces were set up was meant to symbolize the seperate but equal idea as well as tell a story. One of the art pieces titled "Sumner School There's a man living under Sumner School: Moreover I am Convinced of the
Interconnectedness of All Things Living Alter to the Fact that Love Leaves No One Behind." was made of things that people had found at or near the Sumner School district. There were bottles at the bottom of the statue for people to put coins in and make a wish for no one to be left behind. The museum exhibit had other exhibits that also had a deeper meaning similar to this one.
The museum exhibits didn't stop at just vanessa german's art pieces. There were photography pieces by Brian Lanker titled, "I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America. These two are exhibits

worked together to show the audience a message about how racism was ended by the Brown v. Board of Education decision by the supreme court.

*Student Media struggled to find an editor for the 2024 Washburn University Sapphire Yearbook. It's tricky to match student photographers with student organizaitons, and not all student organizations had photos of their own to submit. We asked for submissions several times and ultimately had to use what we had.

Experiential Learning

Law students
Six students, all graduating with a variety of degrees ranging from biochemistry to forensic investigations to forensic biology and art history, participated in a mock criminal trial on April 30 in the trial courtroom at the law school. This trial took place after they each completed a mock criminal case in the Advanced Forensic Chemistry class, in which they successfully analyzed and identified a variety of challenging "unknown" items of both trace and drug evidence, including a tiny paint chip from an automobile that had to be sliced to micrometer thickness in order to prepare it for infrared analysis to identify the
chemicals in each of the seven layers! Students pictured awaiting to be called on the witness stand (left to right, top to bottom) Emily Fryer, Lily Greene, Priscilla AceroVillasenor, Carolyn Wilson, Jaelen Matthews and McKayla Galliart.
Junior Forensic Chemistry major Kirstyn Brown served as the judge, while Professor Kimberly Gerhardt-Whiddon and Holly O'Neill served as the prosecuting and defense attorneys.

Letter from the Editor
BY CHEYENNE HITTLE
After many long mornings and evenings, we present to you the "Legacy" yearbook. This book was a last minute decision to publish, but I am so glad we followed through. Even if we didn't meet our deadlines I am proud of the book we were able to put together.
There are many things I wish I could have done differently to make this book better, but that is in the past and I will use the things I learned to make an even better book in the future.
I am grateful to the people who helped me in accomplishing this book, whether that was through throwing together some spread designs, writing short stories or helping me scour our archives to find the perfect photos and stories to add to our pages. I am also thankful for the people who helped us outside of our organization, to all the people who submitted photos and sent us content to help us fill this book with memories from the school year.
This book is called "Legacy" because of the new legacy that is just getting started this year. As we transitioned to having a new president with plans to make changes to our campus we felt that the book should represent that in some way. Each and every student, faculty staff member and bush pictured in this book is part of Washburn's growing legacy.
I am happy to be a part of recording the Washburn legacy as a Yearbook Editor-in-Chief. A postition that fills me with both joy and worry. Joy with every spread that

was finished. Worry because of the missed deadlines, short amount of time, lack of content and overall overwhelming amount of things to do to finish the book. We hope you enjoy all of the content we added to this book in our best effort to make note of most of the things that happened in your year.

The production of the 2024 Sapphire Yearbook is a project of Washburn Student Media, a student-run media organization that exists to provide a public forum for all Washburn University students.

Advisor's Note: I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of Cheyenne Hittle for the 2024 Sapphire. This wasn't her project until very late into the 2023-24 academic school year. Student Media is a small team of dedicated students who create a significant amount of content each year for the Washburn Review's website and newsletter, the Indigo magazine and the Sapphire Yearbook. The decision to create a smaller version of the 2024 yearbook was necessary, but there was still a tremendous amount of work that went into this edition. We also had two interns, Rina Miyano and Alex Younger, who helped out with the book.
