Engineering an ESS to reduce callbacks

Installer callbacks are the silent margin killer in residential energy management and storage. They consume labor, fuel, scheduling capacity, and homeowner trust in ways

that rarely show up in the original bid. They trace to three causes: Complex systems, hardware failures, and installation challenges. FranklinWH treats callback prevention as an engineering problem, not a burden to

The hidden cost of a callback

A callback costs drive and phone time, impact scheduling, and doesn’t appear in the original bid. The biggest cost is also the easiest to miss: while the crew is back at a closed job, the next job goes uninstalled.

What causes callbacks The same three causes come up again and again, and they interact. Any honest fix addresses all three.

Most callbacks aren’t hardware failures. They surface in the field, most often in the first 90 days, which makes them an OEM design problem to solve.

The number that moves an installer’s year sits below the line:

info@franklinwh.com

Systems too complex to cleanly install, with many components, ambiguous labeling, and tight working areas. Hardware failures, meaning component-level defects or premature failures in the field. Installation challenges, driven by the real-world variability of the field, where even a trained crew can hit a configuration, commissioning, or connection issue.

THE FRANKLINWH ANSWER

Engineering the callback out

FranklinWH addresses the causes: a simpler install, hardware held to an independently verified reliability standard, and real support for the crew. The result: fewer reasons for the truck to roll a second time.

Fewer Boxes, Simpler Wiring The system focuses on two devices: the aGate, energy management and control; and the aPower battery (aPower 2 AC-coupled, or aPower S DC-coupled to PV with a built-in inverter). Fewer boxes means fewer points things to go wrong.

aGate

aPower 2

aPower S

Whole-Home Backup, No Load Relocation The MAC works with meter third-party meter socket adapters from ConnectDER or EQB. The Main Panel becomes whole-home backup with no circuits to move. That removes one of the most labor-intensive parts of an install.

The Lifting Dolly

FranklinWH Rapid Shutdown Duo

Installers said the weight of the aPower was a installation friction point. We built a lifting dolly that lets a small crew move it from truck to wall and mount it in a single trip, with no extra manpower and no second visit.

Our RSD Duo, for the aPower S, runs two independent circuits: if one fails, the second takes over. A single RSD fault no longer means a callback. The transmitter integrates into the aPower S, leaving one fewer, connection point.

MAC

Supporting the installer before the truck arrives Field execution is more than hardware. A free single-line diagram (SLD) review for every project, training and certification, a video library, direct access to engineering via email provide support before the truck roll and during installation.

Reliability & the service safety net Independently verified

Built in reliability

Remote-first service

Backed by a strong warranty

DNV’s Jan 2026 memo: aGate 0.08% and aPower 0.18% cumulative field failure rate, “better than expected for this class of products.”

Rigorous lifecycle stress testing meet an internal target of ≤ 5,000 PPM and a 20-year component design life.

Nearly 7 in 10 issues are resolved on first contact, without a truck roll. Phone support runs 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.

aPower 2 & aPower S: 15-year / 60 MWh, 70% retention. aGate: 12 years. Labor reimbursement: $200 per truck roll, $200/$150/$25 per aPower/aGate/MAC RMA.

The payoff is business continuity. Crews stay free to bid, install, and complete new jobs instead of returning to old ones. A goal of two installations per day becomes realistic.

How much is an electron worth? I'VE BEEN STAYING inside a lot more this year because the weather in Pennsylvania has been mercurial. Frequent flash flood conditions, hazy skies from traveling wildfire smoke, sweltering heat in record breaking temperatures. I’m more familiar with the hum of central air conditioning than I’ve ever been, and my bank account has suffered for it. There’s a gas-fired turbine spinning somewhere that’s propelling electricity along miles of powerlines and into my home. And now that the Trump administration’s EPA has rescinded greenhouse gas regulations for power plants, that turbine is operating without what little emissions curbing was formerly in place. Solar Power World is a media outlet that covers the technologies, people, policies and practices that define the U.S. solar photovoltaic market, but renewable energy sources are intrinsically tied to addressing the very real threat of climate change that we all face. We do not seek to create artificial controversy with what we write, and that isn’t my intention here. If we hope to maintain a livable planet for all of us, and wish to maintain the level of comfort that some of us can afford with climate-controlled homes, that isn’t possible without using renewable energy sources. The problem is the cost of everything is seemingly rising, so who can be responsible for tamping it down? We tend to center the individual in these cases. Having solar installed on your home is an admirable and logical decision, and a couple years ago it was more feasible with federal incentives still intact. It still makes economic sense to go solar, but how much impact is a handful of kilowatts having when hyperscale data centers are materializing across the country and driving up the cost of electricity? In a dream scenario, most homes and commercial buildings would be covered in solar modules paired with energy storage, and virtual power plant programs would enable us to be more resilient to frequent adverse weather; all solar panels fields would be standing on soil with native ground crop, flanked by beehives and other pollinators and tended by livestock that leave the land richer and more biodiverse than before it was installed; federal legislators would reinstate and bolster renewable energy incentives to make up for lost time.

We’re not there yet. Unfortunately, climate change is, and it’s only worsening. As RE+ approaches, eyes will be drawn to towering solar modules and rotating steel trackers. These are the technologies making it possible address this threat, but we need so much more solar and other sustainable renewable energy resources replacing fossil fuels on the grid. I don’t have all the answers to how this can happen. I’m simply a journalist who is mostly watching your work from afar. However, while thousands of us gather in a city that is perhaps humanity’s greatest example of over consumption and decadence, there’s an opportunity to connect with each other and address this looming global threat. And, of course, we can still check out what’s on the show floor. If you’d like a glimpse into what you’ll find this year at RE+, check out our preview section on the country’s largest solar trade show. We’ve also written about a range of topics in this issue, from the fine details of recycling different types of solar modules, to the microinverters making balcony solar possible. I'm still honored to be part of this industry, and I hope to continue to have a part in sharing in its progress. See you in Las Vegas. SPW

LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORTATION TRENDS COMING TO SOLAR PROJECTS SOON KELLY PICKEREL • EDITOR IN CHIEF

A

s the products used in solar and storage projects evolve, their new forms affect more than just installation layouts. Third-party logistics companies (3PLs) must adapt to changes in product design as well to transport them. A pallet of residential solar panels from 10 years ago was shipped much differently than the 7-ft long panels of today. The same can be said for lithium-based energy storage systems as 20-ft containers become the standard. Solar Power World reached out to two 3PLs active in the renewable space — One Source Freight Solutions and TRAFFIX — to learn about other industry trends that affect solar and storage project logistics. As product design evolves, who is responsible for safety planning — the manufacturer, installation contractor or logistics company? Mark Borgman, president of project solutions, One Source Freight Solutions: The top-tier manufacturers all

16

SOLAR POWER WORLD

Operations SPW 09-26 v4 final.indd 16

produce handling guides. We, as part of the process of logistics, are constantly reviewing documentation from people making inverters, transformers, electrical switchgears, everything. The largest EPCs in the country, safety is a big part of what they do. They take the safety of their employees very seriously. The review of those guides is a part of what they do when setting up projects. They have safety meetings on site to talk about how things are supposed to be handled and managed. Safety on job sites is everybody's business, and we have safety issues too in terms of transportation and how those things are loaded inside of trucks. We have conversations with manufacturers about what's the best practice of how this should be handled: should something be blocked or braced, should we use disposable airbags to make sure things can't move and slide around inside the truck? There's a lot of consideration that goes into moving things so they can move safely.

SEPTEMBER 2026

What logistics trends do you expect to affect solar and storage projects in the future? Craig Wadas, director of national accounts, TRAFFIX: Intermodal (using more than one form of transportation) is a topic we're watching. Solar freight often travels long distances from ports or manufacturing facilities to inland projects. Where the product and schedule allow it, rail can potentially reduce cost and truck dependence on the long-haul portion. TRAFFIX is already seeing increased shipper interest in intermodal as truckload capacity tightens. The main hurdles are at the project site where strict timelines can make intermodal a challenge. Borgman, One Source Freight Solutions: What I expect to see over the next few years is trucks going to job sites that have no drivers in them. If we look at what's happening in the transportation industry today — transportation rates

www.solarpowerworldonline.com

Operations

are going up dramatically, there's an increase in the cost of fuel. Something like 90% of trucking companies in the United States are five trucks or less. So, all those mom and pops are going bankrupt. And immigration laws are now being enforced. We're seeing hundreds, thousands of truck drivers taken out of the workforce. Demand for trucking has gone up, pricing has gone up, and now a reduction in the number of drivers. Robotically driven trucks don't have to pay for drivers. They can drive virtually 24 hours a day and never take breaks. We expect to see in the coming years a dramatic increase in the number of deliveries made to job sites that are going to be made by autonomouslydriven trucks. We need to understand how that impacts deliveries to construction job sites. How do we communicate schedules, pickup times, delivery changes? You can tell a driver, "Go over

here 300 yards, make a hard left turn." How would this change layouts, laydown yards and staging materials? Maybe a certain solar job site will not be a good location for an autonomous truck. What developments in product development and project organization would be helpful for a 3PL? Wadas, TRAFFIX: One trend I’m really hopeful for is greater transportation management system (TMS) adoption across the solar industry, particularly with manufacturers, developers and EPCs. Solar projects are planned months or even years in advance, but transportation can still be managed relatively reactively once the product is ready to move. The more we can connect a customer’s enterprise resource planning, inventory data and project schedule with TRAFFIX, the better we can plan ahead. If we know that a project is going to

require 300 truckloads over a six-week period, for example, we shouldn’t be finding out about those loads a few days before they need to ship. We should be able to forecast that demand weeks or months in advance, identify the right capacity, plan warehouse releases and build a delivery schedule around what the jobsite can actually receive. That becomes even more valuable as solar panels get larger, battery systems get heavier and transportation requirements become more specialized. Better TMS adoption gives us visibility into what is coming, where it needs to go and when it needs to arrive. TRAFFIX can then use that information to secure the right equipment and capacity instead of reacting to individual shipments. SPW

SOLAR POWER WORLD’S PROJECTS OF IMPACT

Solar on Staten Island affordable housing serves community and tenants B I L LY L U D T • M A N A G I N G E D I T O R

T

he Sisters of Charity of New York, a Catholic mission group that has spearheaded healthcare and affordable housing developments in the state, called on the power of the sun to reduce energy costs for elderly tenants in a Staten Island housing complex. PV consultancy firm Crauderueff Solar helped the mission group develop an adequate solar system while still working within the narrow financial margins of rent-stabilized housing. The result is two unique arrays: one behind the meter, the other in front; one netmetered and the other a community solar project. Solar Power World spoke to Xiomara Pedraza with Sisters of Charity and Rob Crauderueff, CEO and founder of Crauderueff Solar, about bringing this solar project to fruition. SPW: Why did you want to involve solar in this facility? Pedraza: I think a part of our mission was in recognition of environmental realities to decarbonize our portfolio,

20

SOLAR POWER WORLD

Installation SPW 09-26 v6 final.indd 20

and renewable energy was a part of that strategy. In affordable housing, we do try to minimize utility expenses because we're working with slim margins. Oftentimes, rents are affordable, so whatever we can do to keep the cost pressures down so that we can run the housing efficiently and make sure that we can keep the building affordable is really the goal. How was Crauderueff Solar brought in for this project? Crauderueff: We're a technical assistance partner with organizations such as Sisters of Charity. A lot of the excitement around our work was based on the ability to implement a model where Sisters of Charity could be on multiple sides of a deal in terms of being an off-taker, the leaseholder and the property owner of the PPA, but then also being able to generate its own source of income. That can be very powerful for not-for-profits. We were able to help Sisters of Charity adapt to their context and really make their own power.

Sisters of Charity commissioned a rooftop solar array on a Staten Island apartment providing power to rent-stabilized tenants. Crauderueff Solar

What makes this project unique? Pedraza: We did set up a third-party entity called Charity Solar, to own the systems. So we have a non-profit subsidiary that's owning the system and then the building owner is separate and that takes the liability and some of the other risks off the building itself, which is helpful. On the non-profit sustainability standpoint, we're also able to use it as an income source. Crauderueff: Something that is very interesting about this project is being able to capture federal and state incentives. We received them for both the behind-the-meter and the front-of-themeter projects, and the values are different, the qualifications for the programs are different. For example, the federal bonus tax credit provided a 20% bonus for both the in-front and the behindthe-meter projects. So, these were a total of 50% tax credit projects. They were able to utilize direct pay, so as a not-for-profit, they're able to capitalize and monetize those benefits. New York's solar grant program provided a $1.60/W incentive for behind the meter, $2/W on affordable housing. We're able to really look at stacking different incentives so that it makes sense to optimize the systems. It'd be much more aggressive than just a net-metered system. How is the system running now that it's been on for a bit? Pedraza: It took a while to work with the utility company to get everything rolling, but I'm told the tenants are going to be receiving their savings on their bills starting in August 2026, and they should be receiving a 10% discount, which is great. For the community solar portion, are the tenants technically subscribing to the system? Pedraza: Yes. Rob introduced us to Power Market, who's managing the subscriptions for us, and they did an outreach campaign in the fall. We got more subscriptions than we were expecting.

So, it's 75 units total in the building, and we got over 50 tenants subscribed. There was a lot of interest. What larger lessons are you taking away from the experience? Crauderueff: I think one of the opportunities of working with Sisters of Charity is that it really shows that a collaboration can be very effective to build capacity — to help to set an organizational framework, a financial framework — between a solar consultancy and a housing not-for-profit. You really need both sets of expertise to pull off a project like this, and certainly Sisters of Charity rolled up their sleeves. The solar world, where you have building permits and interconnection and community solar and subscriptions, all of that is completely new. And on the affordable housing side, there are different agencies involved, different requirements. There are a lot of regulatory pieces in addition to the fact that Sisters of Charity

had to identify how they were going to actually operationalize this. So, the combining of worlds is very important. And a project like this shows how that can work effectively, that there's a real need in the affordable housing landscape to reduce operating expenses, and to do that in creative ways. Pedraza: We often are in silos. Affordable housing is very complicated on its own. This is obviously another layer of complexity that I think is difficult for organizations to navigate on their own. It's really helpful to have Rob and his team explain things to us. I'm still learning a lot about solar and will never be an expert, but with every project I’m getting more familiar with what the different systems are, what we should be looking for and what our experience should be, what questions we should be asking our contractor who's selected to install the solar. There's a lot of lessons learned from this that we will carry on to our other projects.

Do you plan to do more solar in the future? Pedraza: We do, I think. It certainly aligns with not only our mission, but I think New York policy in general, even in affordable housing. We often have to do a physical assessment of whether solar is feasible on our projects. I think this project could get a step further in terms of the community solar portion, because typically the agencies want the common area usage covered, but not more than that, and so we took advantage of this. These other incentives do something even bigger, which is great, and it's something I think we're interested in doing in other projects. We have another one happening in Rockland County. We got some grant money from the state because it's an area that's had power outages from storms and hurricanes. We're able to use the grant funds to have solar and backup battery on the property, which is great. SPW

spoke to Solar Power World about the kind of advocacy behind these plug-in solar bills and how the technology could catalyze the larger solar PV market. What is EWG's interest in balcony solar specifically? Del Chiaro: Broadly speaking, our energy supplies right now in America are actually toxic. When you think about EWG's place in the world, where and how we get our energy is causing massive public health issues. In California, you add another

wrinkle to this, and that is with increased heat, with climate change, California's extreme heat days, that's another public health threat, and people need access to affordable electricity. If you put those two together, there is a clear mandate for us to care about our energy supplies as much as we care about what kind of food is being sold in the grocery store and what kind of cleaning products you are bringing into your home. Energy is something that either comes into your home or you create it yourself, and it can either be toxic

or expensive, or it can be healthy and affordable. If you go from there, balcony solar is an obvious solution. There have been a handful of states that have permitted plug-in solar. Is there any significance to that happening in California? Absolutely. Kudos, first off, to Utah. I just love that Utah was the first out of the gates. The whole story of Rep. Raymond Ward (R), this pediatrician by day and legislator by night, who read an article about balcony solar

in Germany and said, “I should do that here.” He just worked it himself and got his colleagues to support it. And then people like me read about it and it opened our eyes. We said, “oh my God, we're going to do that here.” California was the first state to introduce legislation after Utah, but we were, at least so far this year, the last to pass it because our legislative sessions are just so long. It's not really a function of too much delay, though if we had no utility opposition, we could have gotten it to the governor's desk much sooner.

THE WHOLE IDEA BEHIND THESE BILLS IS TO PLACE ALL OF THE CONTROL AND RESTRICTIONS ONTO THE MANUFACTURER TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS SELLING SOMETHING SAFE FOR CONSUMERS.

What oversight is there for something like plug-in solar? The goal is to have no official government oversight. The vision is to have no utility oversight, no utility control, no local city building department, no building permit control and certainly no restrictions from your HOA or landlord. Those are the places that you can traditionally see these types of technologies be restricted or controlled. The whole idea behind these bills is to place all of the control and restrictions onto the manufacturer to make sure that the manufacturer is selling something safe for consumers. If you step back and think about it, that's the case with every kind of electronic device, for the most part, that is sold in the United States. It's an appliance. That isn't something that needs a building modification, right? So, it's all UL certified. That's how we do safety in America for basic common consumer products that are just appliances. We're trying to get out of the building modification and interconnection with the utility that the rest of the solar industry needs to be tethered to and get it more into the world of this is a simple appliance. Obviously, with a rooftop system, even though we all want to cut red tape, at the end of the day, you are drilling holes into the roof. You are making a permanent modification. If you're net metered at least, the whole intention is to interact with the grid. We ought to have interconnection requirements and to have building permits similar to an HVAC system. If you had a portable air conditioner, which those do exist, you don't get a building permit for that. You just plug it in. But if you're going to install a permanent HVAC system, then you need to get a permit because you're making some pretty big structural changes to your home. How does balcony solar actually work? It took me a minute to get my head wrapped around it too. The biggest thing is that electricity does not have a direction. It doesn't go up, down, left, right, diagonal. It doesn't care. It doesn't have a forward direction. We just think of it as having a forward direction because for 150 years the source of electricity has been a power plant and then it is flowing

26

SOLAR POWER WORLD

Policy SPW 09-26 v5 final.indd 26

SEPTEMBER 2026

in one direction toward your refrigerator. But it's just like water in a pipe. It just flows to wherever there's low pressure. So, that low pressure is the opening of a faucet or the plugging in of a computer. That's what creates the low pressure and the electricity flows in that direction. So if you get your head wrapped around that, and then you have your head wrapped around that even a rooftop system — it ties in at the meter box, at the sub-panel — but at the sub-panel, it then distributes the electrons, which flow through the same exact wires in your home that all of your devices and appliances are plugged into. Your home is not electrified any other way than through those same wires inside the walls. It's the exact same physics. It's just one is at the panel and the other is at the little outlet. The electricity doesn't care. It just finds a wire and it's happy to flow. Initially, SPW didn’t know how to cover balcony solar, because we write for solar contractors. How does this affect people working in solar installation? This is both Bernadette talking to you as the former executive director of CALSSA and then also Bernadette a consumer advocate. When I first heard about it in Utah, I made a few calls to my friends at CALSSA. All of them were enthusiastic about it. I do use those guys as my sounding board. Their instincts and my instinct and what I think will absolutely be the case is that this is like a gateway drug, and contractors all around the country and the world, frankly, should sit up and take notice and get really excited about this because what we're just letting more people into this world of solar photovoltaics. We're expanding our universe. We're not shrinking it. When they start seeing how much money they're saving, and then if they have a suitable roof, maybe they’ll say, “I want to go bigger than this. I don't want to just offset 10% of my bill. I want to offset 100%.” When those renters move and finally get into their own singlefamily home, if that is still a possibility in our economy, they're going to have experience with solar. They're going to go, “I'm going to go bigger now that I have a bigger home.” SPW

Why power conversion is key success factor for BESS

A

s battery energy storage system deployment scales, project economics has become an increasingly important driver of technology selection. To remain competitive and maximize project returns, developers and operators are focused on minimizing the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE), which requires installations to deliver high efficiency, strong availability, reduced maintenance requirements, and low capital expenditure (CAPEX). In this context, power conversion technology plays a critical role. Utilityscale inverters are central to BESS performance, enabling bidirectional power conversion between the battery’s DC side and the AC grid, supporting both charging and discharging. An enhanced portfolio of power conversion products ABB has responded to the LCoE challenge by developing an enhanced portfolio of power conversion system (PCS) products and services that integrate the PV and battery energy storage system (BESS) technologies gained through our 2025 acquisition of Gamesa Electric’s power electronics business. BESS is particularly important as it is fast becoming the backbone of modern energy systems. The reason is that the rapid growth of renewable energy sources introduces variability and intermittency

into the grid. Energy storage bridges renewable generation and consumption to ensure stability, reliability and continuous power supply. By 2030, the global BESS market is expected to exceed 411 GW of installed capacity. Bi-directional capability PCS for BESS applications require bi-directional capability to handle both charge and discharge cycles. It is important that they are both modular, to allow flexible configuration, and also battery-agnostic to ensure compatibility with evolving battery technologies. This is vital because battery technology continues to change and it is useful for the PCS to be compatible with multiple chemistries such as Li-ion, Redox Flow, Metal-air and Lead-acid. A power plant controller that is accessible and configurable by a webserver will also enable multiple plant configurations. These could include a standalone PV system, a standard BESS or a hybrid PV, and BESS installation with AC coupling. Proven global presence Delivering the global energy transition is about much more than innovative technology. It demands supplieres with proven scale, integrated expertise, and operational reliability.

This is where ABB’s capabilities really come into play. We already have a total of over 120 GW of installed power conversion systems across wind, hydrogen, PV and battery energy storage projects – that is equivalent to the output of around 120 nuclear power plants. We are also at the forefront of creating new ways to maximize operational uptime through preventive servicing, spare part availability, superior service delivery, and technical support. Our well-connected global network of more than 50 dedicated service workshops, over 1,200 certified field service engineers, and more than 600 service partners, helps operators keep their equipment in peak condition. Safety and quality are central to our philosophy, and we strive to continuously meet stringent requirements, whether for meeting sustainability goals, maximizing uptime, or lowering the total cost of ownership. Ready to support the rapid growth of utility-scale BESS The rapid growth of utility-scale BESS projects is creating a fast-growing demand for reliable, high-efficiency power conversion and grid integration solutions. ABB’s philosophy is that we are always “Engineered to Outrun” and we have responded to the specific needs of this demanding sector by launching an enhanced range of power conversion solutions. SPW

Sodium-ion batteries could soon replace lithium designs in all markets. Unigrid

or much of the last decade, perovskites have been promised to be the future of solar panels. But commercialization has been slow, and only a few manufacturers are willing to test pilot lines. A new technology in the energy storage market is having the opposite experience — just as quickly as sodium-ion designs have been suggested as suitable alternatives to lithium batteries, manufacturers are setting up and securing orders. "It's been fun," said Randy Selesky, chief commercial officer at ESS Inc. "I've been in this market a long time, and I have not seen the market really grab on to something this fast." For a market once best illustrated by lead-acid batteries for off-grid living, today's global energy storage industry is dominated by lithium, when you exclude pumped hydro-storage. Within lithium's share, lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) has become the most-installed chemistry type in grid-scale and residential applications, accounting for 80% of new battery storage worldwide in 2023. While lithium batteries have contributed to the global energy storage market's massive expansion, some of their properties leave much to be desired. For one, although LFP batteries are much safer and less susceptible to thermal runaway than their lithium predecessors, some applications just can't take on their slight fire risk. Lithium batteries also work best in a tight temperature range, and the auxiliary power needed to power chillers and fans to keep them comfortable might price-out projects in certain regions. Plus, the lithium supply chain is dominated by China, which makes establishing a fully domestic energy storage supply chain difficult. Enter sodium-ion. Made from an abundant nontoxic element, sodium batteries can be manufactured similarly to lithium batteries through the same-sized cells, modules and final systems. Sodium batteries benefit from their wide operating temperature range (-40°F to 140°F without output degradation), which negates the need for HVAC systems. And their lack of critical minerals means sodium battery manufacturing could theoretically set up in the United States. Earlier this year, Morgan Stanley Research estimated that sodium-ion

batteries would hold 2% market share by deployment in 2027, but would jump to 20% by 2030 and 37% by 2035. Two sodium chemistries — sodium chromium oxide (NCO) and sodium iron-phosphate pyrophosphate (NFPP) — are pulling ahead as the ones to lead the market into the next decade. NCO has a higher energy density while NFPP is cheaper to manufacture, but either offers an apt alternative to lithium, said Darren Tan, co-founder and CEO of sodium cell developer Unigrid. "New technologies always serve to open new markets or new applications," he said. "When we encounter customers who already use LFP for their applications, we tell them that they're doing a great job and should keep doing it, unless they have certain challenges like not getting enough power or enough safety, it's not lasting long enough, they need to run in the cold or extreme heat. That's when we step in to solve these problems." Sodium-ion market takes shape The promise of sodium-ion technology has attracted players from all corners of the energy storage market. Flow battery pioneer ESS has taken an interest and will release its first grid-scale sodium design next year. Selesky said the move into sodium isn't a step away from longduration flow batteries; it's just adding another lithium alternative to the company's offerings. "Lithium is still 95% of the market, in that two- to eight-hour range. This is the first product we've seen that can go headto-head against the traditional use-cases of lithium-ion," he said. "We saw this as an opportunity to go after 95% of the market, leveraging our 14 years' [experience] of being able to do installation, integration, ongoing maintenance support." ESS will use NFPP cells from startup Alsym in its 1.2-MWh AC energy storage system. Alsym, a Boston-based sodium-ion cell developer, is manufacturing a small amount of product on the East Coast, and ESS will assemble the cells into the BESS at its manufacturing site in Oregon. "[NFPP] follows the same characteristics that ESS has followed since its birth — no risk of fires and it's safe," Selesky said. "Our first launch is in 2027, and then we're doing a second launch, which increases the density, in late 2028. That's how fast this

technology is moving. I can already see what's in R&D that will come out three years from now." The technology is moving so fast that a three-year-old company is already setting up multi-gigawatt-hour manufacturing. Peak Energy formed in 2023 and is on track to begin delivering its Sacramentomanufactured GS1 storage system by midyear 2027. Brandon Kelly, Peak Energy's chief scientist, said the company's meteoric rise was all part of the original plan. "Peak's approach is to get to product quickly, not develop in a lab for 10 years and then launch a product and try and find a market," he said. "There is a strong market demand, and there's a technology that the base chemistry enables a much better product to meet that demand — from the actual product itself, the supply chain and energy security here in the States." The GS1 is a 3.1-MWh NFPP system, a chemistry that Kelly said is "a perfect fit for grid-scale storage." Peak Energy's core

Sodium battery cells can be assembled into the same size of containers as lithium designs. Peak Energy

selling point is the sodium battery's passive cooling, which cuts chillers and fans out of the equation. "[With chillers,] there are moving parts, there's refrigerant, coolant, filters, fans, tons of noise. It's great that we can do it, and I'm happy that it's enabling a lot of things. But those are engineering workarounds we have to do for lithium to meet the application," he said. "Because this version of sodium-ion is more temperature tolerant, we can just let it get hotter and we can still hit the lifetime.

Even in our passive system, we're still at 85% state of health after 20 years. Lithiumion, even with liquid cooling, is around 65%. And with sodium, you don't have any moving parts, the amount of maintenance goes way down. It's beautiful simplicity, which is enabled all the way down at the chemistry level." Room to play in residential While most focus across the entire energy storage market is spent on grid-scale

Large-scale sodium batteries are already functioning on the U.S. grid, like this one in Colorado. Peak Energy

applications, the residential market can benefit from sodium designs too. Unigrid, a sodium-ion cell R&D company that originated at the University of California San Diego, has been quietly developing the technology since the start of the decade. The company just announced a partnership with manufacturer Syntropic Power to make NCO batteries in the United States. "It checks all the boxes. It has a great cycle life, great safety, great power, great cost," Tan said of the NCO chemistry. "The only downside is it's not available in China, so you can't just buy if off the market. We work with foundries to develop this new production process. It not being available also means that we'll be the only

one supplying it, so that's one of our key advantages." Sodium-ion manufacturing is so similar to lithium battery production that most of the major lithium players — BYD, CATL, Hithium — are quickly adjusting existing lithium manufacturing lines to make sodium designs. But this also means they're focusing more on scaling grid-scale sodium batteries, which tend to champion NFPP designs. With Unigrid's focus on NCO chemistry, Tan said the company is looking toward the less crowded residential storage space. "In China, there is no such thing as a residential market, so the major Chinese players don't dominate this space. It's also the reason why residential batteries are historically unaffordable," he said. "You

have utility-scale batteries fighting for cents on the dollar, and then you have [residential batteries] that are still $10,000 and above. We realized this is an opportunity for us to step in and change the status quo. Sodiumion is a reset." Unigrid developed a residential battery prototype, the 9.25-kWh Na+Casa, which can perform in extreme temperatures without external cooling devices and has a 10,000+ cycle life at 100% depth of discharge. Uniquely, the 9.25-kWh capacity rating was determined by current fire codes that haven't yet caught up with sodium-ion development. Sodium batteries are still considered to fall under the "all others" category (rather than lead, lithium or flow) and are limited to 10 kWh. The 9.25-kWh capacity of a single unit may be less than the 15-kWh lithium models on the residential market today, but sodium batteries excel in other areas and should still be considered, Tan said. "Unlike lithium-ion, where a big chunk of your cost is lithium and its critical materials, sodium-ion is very much flipped," Tan said. "The sodium-ion raw materials are extremely low cost, and most [of your cost] is in manufacturing. That means the potential for sodium-ion costs to come down is much greater. Today it is still higher than lithium-ion, but I expect in the next five to 10 years it will come down very sharply." Sodium battery companies may already be walking the walk, but soon they just might be running away with the energy storage market. SPW

Panels Technology KELLY PICKEREL • EDITOR IN CHIEF

Solar panel trends of tomorrow affect recycling today OF THE MANY developments in the solar industry over the last decade, one of the most exciting to witness has been the buildout of solar panel recycling facilities across the country. Once just a problem for later down the road, solar panel recycling is already happening at scale by companies fully invested in this specialized industry — We Recycle Solar, SolarCycle, SolarPanelRecycling.com (SPR) and many more. Although part of a green-minded industry, recyclers don't process solar panels just for the good feelings; they are running a business after all. Right now, the primary moneymakers with recycled silicon solar panels are the aluminum frames and extracted copper, silicon and silver. "At the end of the day, for recycling to work, someone has to be able to consume the products you're generating and consume it at scale," said Brett Henderson, CEO of SPR. "When you take a silicon panel and break it down to all of its base commodities to be recirculated back into manufacturing industries, the bulk of any panel is glass. Glass isn't a very valuable commodity. Silicon panels are economically viable to recycle [because] you're getting to subsidize it by collecting aluminum, silver." Just as recyclers play the commodities market, so do manufacturers. Recent high prices for silver have led some panel manufacturers to explore models that use less of the precious metal. No-silver panels would be cheaper to manufacture, but they'd also be less valuable to recycle. Manufacturing trends like this are forcing recyclers to be some of the most knowledgeable solar panel experts on the market. Solar panel recycling basics The recycling processes described here are for silicon solar panels, the dominant

panel choice in the global solar industry. Although cadmium-telluride (CdTe) thin-film panels are installed on many utility-scale solar projects in the United States thanks to First Solar's domestic manufacturing base, their unique design is not as attractive to third-party recyclers. Thin-film panels are frameless (no aluminum), and the market today isn't asking for cadmium or tellurium. The first step to recycling silicon solar panels is carefully removing their junction boxes and frames. The bulk of what's left is that insignificant glass, but the cleaner and more successfully that glass is removed, the easier it is to access the more valuable components. Most R&D by solar panel recyclers is spent on glass removal, whether through grinding, force or another method altogether. SPR just completed a $12 million upgrade at its three recycling plants in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas to better remove glass without nicking the silicon wafers and encapsulants beneath. OnePlanet, a solar panel recycler

SEPTEMBER 2026

operating outside Jacksonville, Florida, has developed a recycling process that CEO André Pujadas said can remove 99.5% of module glass at 99% glass purity. OnePlanet does this with high-velocity airflow — extreme wind fractures and breaks the glass away from the other components. Once the glass is removed, all recyclers generally follow the same path — shredding the silicon wafer and its connections into a fine powder and sending it through density separation, which leaves copper and a silver-silicon mix. Copper is an easy sell for recyclers, while refineries can better split the silver and silicon to sell to larger purchasers. "To bring [refining] in house wouldn't be a competitive advantage. They're doing this at major scale for industries around the world. SPR isn't trying to reinvent the wheel," Henderson said. However, OnePlanet's proprietary recycling process could bring an element of refining to the recycler. When cleaner glass is removed, Pujadas said that the

silver-silicon mix is less contaminated by crushed glass, which concentrates the end result into 95% pure silicon with 1% silver — which refineries find more valuable. "The whole business philosophy here would be to extract and recover minerals and reintroduce them into the supply chain for re-consumption, encouraging a circular economy," he said. "A big part of that is how much value is extracted across the entire value chain. This recycling process is very focused on a high-purity silicon. [Eventually] we will have enough silicon that it can become a feedstock for metallurgical-grade silicon production." Looking quickly to the future Panel recyclers are already anticipating future manufacturing trends to determine how they will affect their ability to stay in business, and they might arrive sooner than expected too.

Once the glass and frame are removed on a solar panel, what remains is primarily polymers, copper, silver and silicon. SPR

Panels Technology

Recycling is the easy part; finding the right commodity buyers is more challenging. SPR

With most silicon solar panels expected to successfully function for 25 years and beyond, there hasn’t been an influx of decommissioned panels from the first major wave of U.S. installations from the early 2010s. But there's enough supply of damaged panels from shipping and handling incidents, adverse weather and manufacturing errors that recyclers have to be on top of tomorrow's trends today. Henderson said that SPR added bifacial recycling equipment to its processing sites barely two years after launching. "We're getting new technology into our stream right away," he said. SPR has dedicated research analysts on staff to quickly follow manufacturing trends and determine if the recycler may need a new processing technology or new offtakers for different material compositions. If solar panels use less silver, the copper may be more valuable, but the silicon-silver mix might be less attractive to

40

SOLAR POWER WORLD

Panels Technology SPW 09-26 v5 final.indd 40

certain refineries. Recycling is the easy part; finding the right commodity buyers is more challenging. "We're starting to see technology out there to not use any silver on a solar panel, or much less of it. If it's still this silicon-based technology, it's just going to change the economics of it," Henderson said. "Over time, insurance costs go higher, equipment costs go higher, labor costs go higher, regulatory costs go higher. And then if you're going to remove one of the components that helps subsidize it, it will probably mean that asset owners are going to have this rollercoaster on how recycling pricing may be." For example, tandem perovskite-silicon panels are still new to the market, yet many recyclers are considering how to process them. They use lead, which would require stronger encapsulants to keep out moisture that is harder to break to get to

SEPTEMBER 2026

the valuable components. There's also the challenge with lead's toxicity. "It can become a hazardous material, and then you have to deal with transportation and full framework disposal under a hazardous waste scenario," Pujadas said. "Then you have to beef up your emission systems and safety culture. It could be done, but when do you start doing it?" That's the conundrum in the solar panel recycling space: when is it time to invest in new processes and when can a steady stream of old technologies be relied upon? That's why efforts that can be controlled today — improving glass removal and silicon purity — will be advantageous for any type of solar panel design. "It's a strange industry," Henderson said. "Solar panels are the one singular item you're bringing in, but there's so many flavors." SPW

Microinverter manufacturers anticipate a growing balcony solar market AN INVERTER’S ROLE in a plug-in solar project is functionally the same as in an interconnected solar project: it converts DC to AC power. Where it differs is how much power it can handle and how it’s interacting with the grid. A residential solar project is tied into a dedicated branch circuit on the home. These arrays operate at higher voltages (240+ V) than plug-in solar systems. If a residential PV project is interconnected, then the owner is compensated for the power it exports to the grid. A plug-in solar system uses a microinverter that is literally plugged into a common GFCI outlet. These microinverters are rated at about half the voltage as those used in an interconnected array. The power they produce is used immediately within a home if there’s demand for it. If not, it flows to the grid. “I come from a DIY background, and I’ve always been a big believer that solar is not as complicated as people think,” said Doug Hewitt, North American director at APsystems. “This completely simplifies

it. We need to build more products like this — where it’s more easily accessible for people to go solar.” Coming to America Plug-in or balcony solar technology arrived in the United States after legislation permitting its use was passed in Utah last year. Since then, many other state legislators have written plans to legalize these portable solar systems. They were first popularized in countries where residents are predominantly renters and cannot install rooftop solar on their homes. In 2024, German residents were using more than 500,000 balcony solar systems, according to a story published by Grist. That number has reportedly more than doubled since then. Inverter manufacturers Hoymiles and APsystems were already producing microinverters for the global balcony solar market before its advent in the United States. Recognizing its popularity abroad, the companies began adapting their inverters for U.S. electrical standards once balcony solar bills started being passed.

SEPTEMBER 2026

APsystems produces the EZ1 microinverter for plug-in solar applications. It is rated for a maximum of 900 V, has two channels for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and comes with built-in system monitoring. The microinverter is designed for connecting to two modules (up to 660 W total), but with some adaptation can connect to more modules if they have lower wattages. “The market is telling us that people are actually really interested in this,” Hewitt said. "It’s giving everybody a chance to go solar. I think it’ll be huge.” Hoymiles manufactures a series of microinverters for the plug-in solar market called HiFlow. These microinverter models range from 280 to more than 650 W. Each HiFlow unit has one MPPT channel but can be connected to multiple modules. The microinverters can be used in sequence for a maximum system rating of 1.2 kW. When legalized, plug-in solar is being treated more as an appliance than a modification. Having rooftop solar installed on a home falls under a similar permitting parameter as replacing a

furnace or air conditioning unit. A plugin solar microinverter is simply plugged in and sends power directly into the home through that electrical outlet without any modifications. The only other consideration is where to put the modules. Plug-in solar microinverters are in a similar class of product safety standards as other home appliances. In January, UL Solutions published a new testing standard for “interactive plug-in PV,” UL 3700, to address safety concerns for how these microinverters interact with electrical outlets, preventing touch-related shocks and overloading home circuits. UL 1741 also applies to plug-in microinverters, which established a cybersecurity standard for inverter-enabled distributed energy resources. What does plug-in mean for solar at large? Perhaps the largest difference between rooftop and plug-in solar technologies is the cost. Balcony PV systems are significantly cheaper than commissioning a solar installation on a home, but they also only produce a fraction of power. But any amount of self-produced power is still

electricity not bought from a utility. Balcony solar's accessibility has led companies like APsystems to set up consumer-facing webstores for their microinverters and accessory components. “I truly believe that the market will continue to move toward DIY,” Hewitt said. “Losing tax credits and having the

industry being kicked in the you-knowwhat this last year, solar still makes a lot of sense. People being able to buy their own equipment and being able to install it can make a difference.” However, Hewitt believes that plug-in solar has its role in solar installation. He sees potential for it in project repowering. Technicians returning to an array in need of updating could supplement lost power from underperforming or degrading modules with a plug-in solar unit. “Most everybody needs more electricity nowadays,” he said. Plug-in solar is still new to the United States. As more states pass laws permitting this solar technology, the cost of electricity continues to rise here, as does the cost of homeownership. Plug-in solar could introduce American renters to photovoltaics while other styles of these systems remain out of reach. “The U.S. has a larger addressable base [than Germany], higher electricity rates in many states and now nine or 10 states with plug-in solar laws and more on the way,” said Sean Wang, North American president of Hoymiles. “Hoymiles sees the U.S. ceiling as higher than Germany’s, not just a repeat of it. “The best answer to the U.S. energy crisis isn’t a complex grid, but an accessible technology that puts power back in the hands of everyday households,” he continued. How a solar racking company made electrical bonding easier FOR MORE THAN a decade, a racking company from Buffalo, New York, has been supplying the rooftop solar market with a device that simplifies panel-to-panel bonding. Millions of these clips have been snapped onto neighboring module frames found in commercial and residential solar arrays to electrically bond these systems. The product is known as DynoBond, and DynoRaxx invented it to solve an in-house electrical bonding problem. But after all these years, DynoBond has become the company's most prolific component based on individual units produced and sold. DynoRaxx is known for its nonconductive fiberglass racking. These structures were designed with ease of installation in mind, featuring essentially two components: the rack itself and attachment clamps. DynoRaxx applied the same design sensibility to DynoBond, which is a length of tincoated copper wire with stainless steelbrackets attached on either end. The clip installs by pressing each bracket onto neighboring module frames by hand, and it doesn’t require tools. “Since our system is fiberglass, we needed a mechanism that was easy to install for that equipment grounding,” said Nathan Rizzo, CEO of DynoRaxx. Solar module frames, which are mostly made of metal, are electrically conductive. On a metal racking system, that electrical bond between solar modules can be established and then grounded into the racking itself. There’s a risk of electrical shock if a solar project isn’t properly grounded, which could be dangerous and possibly fatal. While also viable for bonding groundmounts, DynoBond is primarily used in the rooftop market.

46

SOLAR POWER WORLD

Mounting Technology SPW 09-26 v4 final.indd 46

A common method for grounding a rooftop solar project is installing grounding lugs on each solar module frame and running a copper wire through those lugs in the panel row. Segments of the wire are secured in the lug and ultimately tied into the racking to ground the system. DynoBond is an alternative to using grounding lugs on each frame. The clips’ brackets use a toothed spring clamp that clings to the bottom lip flange of a solar module frame. They can be installed in module rows going east-west or northsouth — often using both orientations to bond modules in a single solar array. Then to terminate the electrical charge, DynoBond can either be led to a junction box or a homerun wire leading away from the array. “Our goal is always to reduce installation cost, whether that’s through our mounting system or through the DynoBond,” Rizzo said. “Everything is user friendly from a component perspective. We try to keep our part counts as low as possible.” From internal to widespread use DynoBond was first deployed exclusively on solar projects using DynoRaxx racking in the early 2010s. It was initially designed to solve that internal conductivity problem, but eventually DynoRaxx started selling the bonding clips to other solar installers and they have even been packaged with competing racking systems. Getting to that point required marketing DynoBond from the ground up. At trade shows, the company started handing out samples of the DynoBond and still does today. It was advertised as a racking-agnostic component for pitched and flat roof solar projects.

SEPTEMBER 2026

“It took a few years for somebody to really understand the value of DynoBond,” said Scott Lewandowski, sales manager at DynoRaxx. AHJs also took a few years to understand DynoBond as a component in solar systems. At the start, permitting offices were frequently contacting the company with questions, but those inquiries have tapered off more recently, Lewandowski said. While it is a smaller component on solar projects, DynoBond is manufactured in the United States using domestic metals. “All DynoRaxx components have been American made since day one,” Lewandowski said. “The wire, the smelters, our stainless steel are all Americansourced and American-made.” They come in lengths anywhere from 8 to 96 in. And an installer can place DynoBonds on 50 kW of solar modules within an hour, he said. “It’s such a small product. The packaging, the shipping. It’s not something that’s overwhelming,” Lewandowski said. “You can put it in the front seat of your car, go to the job site and be out of there within the hour … There are no specialized tools. As long as a guy has two hands, he’s good to go.” After more than a decade, DynoBond’s design hasn’t really changed, but it continues to find new uses. Recently, it’s been gaining traction in solar project repowering. DynoRaxx plans to continue producing this little bonding clip for the broader solar market, for whoever may need it. SPW

SOLAR SPOTLIGHT:

CAPTURING EVERYTHING IN SOLAR JOB SITE MANAGEMENT KAMAL SHAH has seen construction industries shift from analog procedures to more advanced, software-driven practices for job site operations. He’s also played an integral role in introducing these new efficiencies to the solar industry through his company SiteCapture. This software platform, which is available to the commercial and residential solar markets, helps manage data collection for the entire lifespan of the solar array, including operations and maintenance. Shah joins us for this episode of Solar Spotlight to discuss some of the biggest trends in contemporary solar and how SiteCapture is keeping a long view on the future of photovoltaics. An excerpt of this interview is available below and you can listen to the full conversation on your preferred podcast service. Who does SiteCapture serve and what problems do you solve for the industry? Our biggest industry is the solar industry. We started in solar back in 2015. The primary goal is to help solar installers operate more efficiently and help their businesses succeed. Solar has a lot of needs for capturing really good documentation and photos on the job site, and that's what really got us into it — our technology platform was really, really well suited for that. So, whether it's site surveys — the front end of the process is the documentation of the installation — all the things that's required for quality control purposes or solar financing. Then also in the operations and maintenance, doing inspections on existing systems, or documenting work orders. That's really how we got started, solving those problems What are your EPC and installer clients saying about working in a market landscape shaped by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act? This year, everyone is really just adjusting to

48

SOLAR POWER WORLD

SiteCapture Solar Spotlight SPW 09-26 v2 final.indd 48

the impacts of the bill and the removal of the tax incentives for homeowners, so there's a lot of volatility and uncertainty for many installers. We're hearing it from the installers that we're working with, that it is challenging, but I think everybody sees it as a short-term problem to adjust to the new realities. That’s what’s happening this year, especially over the last, five or six months since this has gone into effect at the beginning of the year.

tax incentive perspective. So, that incentive remained in place, and is probably going to be in place for a couple of years, and now we're hearing possibly longer. And what that's done is it's really made TPO the most cost-effective and most popular choice for homeowners that want to put solar on their roofs. With that, we're seeing a big increase in the percent of residential solar installs done under TPO.

I understand that SiteCapture just released SiteCapture AI. Where do you think AI is having the biggest impact in the solar market and what implications does it have for the future of solar installer operations? We're all seeing where AI is having massive impacts in many, many areas of the world, and in business there are huge impacts in jobs and businesses that are primarily digital. So, whether it's coding, accounting, legal, writing, I think it's very obvious how AI is being used and being applied, and how it's really making things more efficient. Solar, and other industrial type businesses, still have a very hands-on component. They still require the people to get on the roofs, to put solar panels up, and the solar installers are great at that, and have incredible skill and expertise that's not going to be replaced by AI in doing that actual physical part of doing the installation. So, when you look in the solar industry, you look at sort of all the surrounding tedious, time-consuming processes that surround the installation.

Over the next couple years, what do you think will separate the solar companies that succeed from those that don't? The starting point is adapting to the current reality this year. A lot of change is happening, impacts by the changes to the tax incentives and some of the things we just talked about. To succeed, you're going have to adapt. The second part of is preparing for the growth curve that is coming and is inevitable. Now we're seeing based on the continuously increasing costs and demand for electricity, solar is still the most effective way to deliver on that demand for electricity. I think the next thing would be, how do you prepare for that? How do you adapt? A lot of that is really adopting tools and technologies and more efficient processes, so these installers can set themselves up for growth and scale without increasing costs significantly. SPW

TPO financing models are growing in popularity, and SiteCapture integrates directly with financing companies, right? Where are financiers and EPCs currently seeing success and where does SiteCapture fit in there? The bill that was passed last year and went into effect this year impacted homeowners, but didn't impact the TPO providers from a

he largest tradeshow focused on U.S. solar, storage and clean energy markets is back in Las Vegas from Nov. 16-19, 2026, and Solar Power World will be there. RE+ was the 24th largest tradeshow in the United States in 2025 by attendance, and this year's showing is expected to be just as large. The U.S. solar and storage industries have gotten so big that it appears only the Las Vegas Convention Center can accommodate a tradeshow bringing together nearly 40,000 clean energy professionals in one place. RE+ will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center each November for the foreseeable future. The convention center is tucked away from the main strip of casinos, but there is still plenty in the area to see and do. The

site is also easily accessible, with a stop on the Las Vegas Monorail. Conference education programming begins on Monday and sessions continue throughout the show at various stages on the exhibit hall floor. The exhibition opens on Tuesday. Exhibitors will be spread across three halls in the convention center — the main entrance is at West Hall which extends via an over-street walkway to North Hall, and then Central Hall is accessed beyond a lobby area. There will also be a few outdoor booths to peruse located near food trucks. Visiting outdoor exhibits in November will be more comfortable, as the average high temperature is just 70°F, unlike the late summer heat of September. Special events at RE+ include a golf tournament on Monday and the Run with the Sun 5K

on Tuesday. The "Energy in Motion" block party will be at the Convention Center on Tuesday starting at 7 p.m. in the West Hall. Formula 1 will race the Las Vegas Grand Prix the weekend following RE+. The course takes drivers down the Las Vegas Strip and around the Sphere, and road closures to the public will begin on Thursday. The Las Vegas Convention Center is several blocks north of the racing circuit, so the conference shouldn't experience disruptions. After-conference activities might be affected later in the week, and attendees should plan a little extra time getting to the airport if leaving before the weekend. Solar Power World editors will be covering all the sights at RE+ this year, so be sure to follow along on LinkedIn and solarpowerworldonline.com. SPW
