The annual National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico celebrates San Juan de Dios, patron saint of WHAT firework makers, POV: Brimstone & Glory – and the local resiScreening dents who work in WHERE pyrotechnics. This Chicago Public Library film honors the Beverly Branch spirit of Tultepec’s 1962 W. 95th Street community, and in Chicago showcases their Children at the festival WHEN virtuosity as they Thursday, October 10, 1:30 pm create their own combustibles and larger-than-life papier-mâché bulls for the parade.

WTTW and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events present a free screening and discussion of WTTW’s new digital series Stage Players.

Chicago’s powerful, diverse, and ever-expanding theatre scene is justly famous, and an integral part of the city’s cultural life. From Steppenwolf to Lookingglass, from the Goodman to the Den, from Albany Park Theater Project to the Black Ensemble Theater, the Windy City’s close-knit theatrical community is inextricably linked to the city’s arts identity. The new series from WTTW Digital, Stage Players, shines a well-deserved spotlight on some of our town’s actors, architects, playwrights, choreographers, ushers, stage managers, patrons, and others who have various roles to play on, behind, and around our city’s stages.

A panel discussion will follow a screening of excerpts from the series, with WTTW producer Daniel Andries; Coya Paz, Artistic Director of Free Street Theater; Collette Pollard, scenic designer and company member of The House Theatre Company of Chicago; Henry Godinez, actor and professor at Northwestern University’s Department of Theatre; and Derrick Sanders, director and co-founder of Congo Square Theatre Company.

The Orion Ensemble

2-for-1 Tickets to The Orion Ensemble’s Beethoven Birthday Tribute The Orion Ensemble’s first concert program of the season celebrates Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday with his Serenade in D Major for string trio, Op. 8. Also on the program are three piano-focused works by Lili Boulanger – Cortège (1914) for solo piano, D’un soir triste (1918) for piano trio, and D’un matin de printemps (1918) for violin and piano; Louise Talma’s Alleluia in Form of Toccata (1947) for piano; and Josef Labor’s Quintet in D Major for clarinet, strings, and piano, Op. 11.

Performances take place Sunday, September 29 at 7:00 pm at Orion’s new venue, New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Boulevard in Aurora; Wednesday, October 2 at 7:30 pm at the PianoForte Studios, 1335 S. 2-for-1 Tickets to The Saint Sebastian Players’ Our Town The Saint Sebastian Players open their 39th season with the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1938 classic play Our Town by Thornton Wilder, directed by SSP company member Jim Masini. This touching minimalist drama, performed without a set on a mostly bare stage, is a microcosm of the life cycle – focusing on the everyday lives of the citizens of the fictional American small town of Grover’s Corners in the years between 1901 and 1913.

Performances are October 25 through November 17, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Diversey Avenue, just west of Ashland at Marshfield, in Chicago. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra On Stage: A New Season Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra On Stage returns to WFMT’s evening lineup. It was recently announced that Ken-David Masur would be the MSO’s latest music director, beginning with this season; he’s also been appointed principal conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.

The current radio series begins with the highly acclaimed concert Masur conducted to open last season in Milwaukee - just his second appearance with the ensemble. It features Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg in Rachmaninoff’s second concerto.

Subsequent concerts will showcase an array of visitors and one staffer on the podium: Karina Canellakis, who holds positions with Holland’s Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and the Berlin Radio Symphony; Jader Bignamini, a specialist in opera conducting, sharing a program with Ms. Canellakis; MSO resident conductor Yaniv Dinur; Johannes Debus, music director of the Canadian Opera Company; and Carlos Kalmar, music director of the Oregon Symphony and principal conductor of Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival.

Simone Young

Conductor Simone Young’s CSO debut Australia’s Simone Young, the first woman ever to conduct at the Vienna State Opera (in 1993) and on the podium of the Vienna Philharmonic (in 2005), has led symphony concerts and operas in Sydney, Bergen, Hamburg, and the Metropolitan Opera. This past June she made her debut with the Chicago Symphony, in a program anchored by her extensive experience in Wagnerian opera: a suite of excerpts from the grand finale of the Ring cycle, Götterdämmerung. The concert opens with Liszt’s seldomheard tone poem Prometheus, and it concludes with another relative rarity: Arnold Schoenberg’s orchestration of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G Minor. Lisa Simeone hosts.

Music of the Baroque: Bach’s Mass in B Minor Chicago’s Music of the Baroque originated in 1970 as the brainchild of organist and choir director Thomas Wikman. The organization has grown and flourished ever since. Now directed by British conductor Jane Glover, the organization performs at Chicago’s Harris Theater and the North Shore Center in Skokie, plus a variety of churches for its acclaimed Holiday Brass and Choral performances. MOB opened its 201920 season with a work that has been a hallmark of its repertory for some half a century: Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

Glover conducts the MOB chorus and orchestra with vocal soloists Yulia Van Doren, Krisztina Szabo, Jonas Hacker, and Tyler Duncan.

Marc-André Hamelin at Northwestern Last May, Northwestern’s Bienen School of Music welcomed Hamelin to its Skyline Piano Artist Series, and WFMT is pleased to be able to present that recital on air. In addition to fantasies by Chopin and Schumann, Bach’s Chaconne as transcribed by Ferruccio Busoni, and music by Mario CastelnuovoTedesco, Hamelin also presented some rarely heard music written by a pianist of a generation back: Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012).

Weissenberg transcribed for solo piano six compositions by the French singer, songwriter, and recording artist Charles Trenet, who lived from 1913 to 2001. (Perhaps unfortunately, the suite of transcriptions does not contain Trenet’s most famous number, called in French La Mer (The Sea), but known in the U.S. and elsewhere as Beyond the Sea.)
