Free Screening and Discussion: The Great American Read WTTW, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, presents a free event in connection with the PBS and WTTW literacy initiative The Great American Read.

All summer, readers have been voting for their favorites from a curated list of 100 popular books put together by PBS and spotlighted on the weekly WHAT series The Great Free Screening and Discussion: The Great American Read American Read. As the big reveal of America’s WHERE favorite book nears, Chicago Cultural Center, Claudia WTTW invites you to Cassidy Theatre view a bit of the series 78 E. Washington Street in Chicago and hear from some WHEN Chicago authors as they Saturday, October 20, 2:00 pm share their own favorite books and explain how they have influenced their writing. The vocal ensemble Chicago a cappella kicks off its 25th anniversary season on the stage of Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park with a musical tribute to the city featuring Geoffrey Baer.

WTTW’s Emmy-winning host Geoffrey Baer will serve as narrator for Chicago, Chicago – a “Chicago time capsule” featuring the 10-voice ensemble. The program will include historic songs such as “Follow the Drinking Gourd,” a nostalgic “Chicago (That Toddlin’ Town),” and “Sweet Home Chicago.” The ensemble will use these melodies, vivid projections illustrating the city’s past and present, and Baer’s narration to delve into music from the Columbian Exposition (marking its 125th anniversary), the Great Migration, the birth of blues and gospel, our beloved skyscrapers, champion sports teams, and more.

This special performance will be followed by a wine-and-dessert reception in Pritzker Pavilion’s choral hall to celebrate Chicago a cappella’s silver anniversary; all ticket holders are invited to attend.

2-for-1 Tickets for Tere O’Connor Dance The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago presents the return of Tere O’Connor Dance. Long Run is a major new work from O’Connor that pits the rigid geometry of the stage against the organic bodies crossing over it in a kinetic exploration. Long Run pushes the emotional content of O’Connor’s movement to new physical extremes, allowing timebased elements like polyrhythms, velocity, and duration to overtake the performers as they struggle to bring their bodies into a state of calm. O’Connor has a great love of movement and a deep commitment to choreographic craft and design, while more philosophical urges animate his work.

Performances are Thursday-Saturday, October 18-20 at 7:30 pm at the Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

The Music Institute of Chicago welcomes the Halloween season with a “Spooktacular” Concert and Haunted Musical Open House. The appropriately “scary” concert program features selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, performed by the Music Institute’s acclaimed faculty.

The Haunted Musical Open House invites guests to travel from room to room for music, trick-ortreating, and other activities. Audience members of all ages are encouraged to wear costumes and get into the spirit of the event.

The concert takes place Sunday, October 28 at 3:00 pm at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. Welcoming the audience to get involved in the action, the Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) open the company’s 38th season with the multiple Tony Award-winning musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood with book, music, and lyrics by Rupert Holmes. Based on Charles Dickens’ final unfinished novel, this hilarious whodunit invites the audience to solve its mystery by choosing the identity of the murderer, potentially changing the show’s ending at each performance. The tale is presented as a show within a show, as the Music Hall Royale – a delightfully loony Victorian theatre company – presents Dickens’ brooding mystery.

Performances are October 26-November 18, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Diversey in Chicago. Free parking is available in two lots.

Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Onstage: Celebrating American Music A new 13-week season of radio concerts by the Milwaukee Symphony will celebrate the 2018 Bernstein centennial, and will reach beyond Bernstein to feature American composers of today – John Adams, Jake Heggie, Nico Muhly – to giants of the past including Barber, Copland, Gerhswin, and Ives. Under recently retired music director Edo de Waart and a large group of guest conductors, the Milwaukee musicians and their guests open this new series with Bernstein’s Candide Overture and will end it with his Chichester Psalms, visiting along the way his symphony The Age of Anxiety, his Serenade After Plato’s Symposium for violin and orchestra, Divertimento, and Fancy Free. Some of the concerts will feature the MSO’s chorus; guest soloists include violinists Augustin Hadelich and Philippe Quint, cellist Truls Mork, and soprano Susanna Phillips in Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915.

LA Opera on Air: A Double Bill Ruggero Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci is almost invariably paired with another one-act tragedy, Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. But Placido Domingo and the Los Angeles Opera decided to do it differently.

To contrast with the melodrama of Pagliacci, they chose the satirical comedy of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.

Known almost entirely through its lyrical soprano aria, “O mio babbino caro,” this one-acter is part of a larger work Puccini called his Trittico (Triptych). Domingo will portray the rascally title character, who impersonates a recently deceased rich man so as to dictate a will to the satisfaction of a group of greedy relatives. Of course, Schicchi arranges instead that most of the money will come to him for the benefit of his daughter and the man she loves.

The celebrated tenor, who has taken on baritone roles in recent years, will be the conductor for Pagliacci, whose Los Angeles cast was headed

by Ana María Martínez as Nedda.

Live from WFMT An alumna of Chicago’s Lyric Opera Center for American Artists (predecessor of the Ryan Opera Center), lyric-coloratura soprano Alicia Berneche also studied at DePauw University and Baltimore’s Peabody Institute. She’s performed at Lyric, the Goodman Theatre, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Arizona Opera. A specialist in new music, she has introduced audiences to works by a number of today’s composers including Ricky Ian Gordon, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Shulamit Ran. In WFMT’s Fay and Daniel Levin Performance Studio, she’ll be joined by composer-pianist Philip Morehead, flutist Caroline Pittman, and composer-oboist Patricia Morehead.

From the San Francisco Opera The French poet André Chénier (1762-1794) was executed during the aftermath of the French Revolution.

Umberto Giordano’s opera Andrea Chénier, loosely based on his life, tells us he was in sympathy with the aims of the revolution but got caught up in the complex political intrigues and violent criminality of the Reign of Terror. The opera’s complicated story finds the poet in love with an aristocratic woman named Madddalena who also becomes the revolution’s victim; her former servant Gérard, also based in part on an historical figure, is a major key to the plot and gets one of the work’s outstanding arias, “Nemico della patria” (Enemy of the state). Chénier, sung by a tenor, also gets several major arias, while Maddalena sings the tender “La mamma morta” (My mother died).

The San Francisco Opera’s recent production of Andrea Chénier stars tenor Yonghoon Lee, soprano Anna Pirozzi, and baritone George Gagnize, with Ryan Opera Center alumna J’Nai Bridges in a featured role.

Robert Chen

Live from WFMT Taiwanese native Robert Chen has been concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1999. He’s also appeared as a guest violinist with orchestras from Sweden to Japan, and has performed chamber music at Aspen, Santa Fe, and La Jolla.

Chen participated in Jascha Heifetz’s master classes and received degrees from New York’s Juilliard School, where his teacher was Dorothy DeLay.

Comedy from San Francisco The early 19th century, opera’s belcanto era, saw composers creating epic historical dramas, like Gioachino Rossini’s Semiramide and Gaetano Donizetti’s “queen” operas, contrasted with sparkling, farcical comedies for a refreshing change of pace. One of these comedies, The Barber of Seville, remains in what might be thought of as opera’s Top Ten, with frequent productions in houses all over the world. Recently at the San Francisco Opera, baritone Lucas Meachem sang Rossini’s title role, the barber Figaro, with Daniela Mack as Rosina and Ryan Opera Center alumnus René Barbera as her lover, Count Almaviva. Alessandro Corbelli and Andrea Silvestrelli, artists familiar to Lyric Opera audiences, shine as Dr Bartolo and Don Basilio. Donizetti’s two most famous comedies are L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) and Don Pasquale – a work with a stock comedy situation, that of an elderly philanderer thwarted by young love. (This is very much the situation in The Barber of Seville, too.) Once again from San Francisco we’ll hear from Meachem in the role of Dr. Malatesta, with Heidi Stober and Lawrence Brownlee as the lovers, and Maurizio Muraro in the title role. Giuseppe Finzi is the conductor for both performances.

In the Spotlight Avi Avital

Classical and Baroque Treasures from the CSO Music by Bach, Vivaldi, Boccherini, and Haydn was featured when Giovanni Antonini, leader of the earlymusic group Il Giardino Armonico, visited Chicago earlier this year to guest-conduct Classical and Baroque Treasures with a Chicago Symphony reduced for the occasion to 18th-century size. Antonini was joined by the Israeli-born mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital, who specializes in arrangements of concertos mostly written for other instruments, plus merging folk music into the classical repertory, and in general making the mandolin better known among audiences for all types of music. Avital studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and in Italy at the Cesare Pollini Conservatory, going on to perform at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Berlin Philharmonie, Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall, and any number of other concert venues. He’s also bringing the mandolin to new audiences via recordings, one of which, Between Worlds, includes folk arrangements from the traditions of Wales, Bulgaria, and Eastern European klezmer.

The Chicago Symphony, Muti, Liszt, and Dante Last year Chicago Symphony music director Riccardo Muti presented a real rarity at Symphony Center: A Symphony to Dante’s Divine Comedy

by Franz Liszt. Usually called the Dante Symphony, it’s based on portions of The Divine Comedy and calls for a chorus of women’s voices briefly, toward the end. When working on this major piece, Liszt was very much under the influence of his friend and colleague Richard Wagner (though they would fall out later).

According to CSO program annotator Phillip Huscher, some specific advice Wagner gave was: don’t try to set Dante’s Paradiso portion, because human beings can’t begin to fathom or depict heaven. Liszt’s music sets the Inferno and Purgatorio portions of The Divine Comedy, with some vivid tone-painting to represent the flames of hell, and a quieter interlude in the Inferno portion to evoke the love story of Paolo and Francesca.

The ending of the Dante Symphony was originally designed to be quiet, with the women’s voices floating in a chorus of praise over the orchestra; Liszt later added a more robust coda, which Muti chose to perform with the CSO after the women’s voices have died away. Before Liszt, the broadcast opens with Mitsuko Uchida playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, plus Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain. Demons and witches dancing on the Bald Mountain – ghosts and devils in Dante’s Inferno – the CSO will give WFMT listeners quite an introduction to Halloween Week.
