WTTW, in partnership with the POV series, presents a free Ella Es el Matador – Screening screening of the film Ella Es el Matador. For Spaniards – and for WHERE the world – nothing has expressed their country’s traditionally rigid Chicago Public Library gender roles more powerfully than the image of the male matador. Richard M. Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts Join WFMT each Wednesday for the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, live from Preston Bradley Hall in the Chicago Cultural Center. Enjoy solo recitals and ensemble performances by emerging classical artists from around the world, produced by the International Music Foundation. Featured artists this month include tenor Eric Ferring and pianist Madeline Slettedahl; Diderot String Quartet with Harry Bicket, harpsichord; pianist Michael Noble; and violinist Richard Lin with pianist Chih-Li Chen. Performances take place beneath the world’s largest Tiffany-domed ceiling, part of a landmark building that originally housed the Chicago Public Library. The series is named for British pianist Myra Hess, who organized free lunchtime concerts for Londoners during World War II, in the years of nightly air raids. In 1963, 250,000 students boycotted the Chicago Public Schools to protest racial segregation. This documentary connects the forgotten story of one of the largest Northern civil rights demonstrations to contemporary issues around race, education, and youth activism. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the film’s director, Kartemquin Films founder Gordon Quinn, and others. During the summer of 2017, Barnes lost many close friends to cancer. One of the ways he processed his grief was by developing this powerful musical meditation exploring love and death. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents the 21st annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to 11-time Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has starred in the acclaimed comedies Seinfeld and Veep. 9:30 ’63 Boycott On October 22, 1963, more than 250,000 students boycotted the Chicago Public Schools to protest racial segregation. Many marched through the city calling for the resignation of School Superintendent Benjamin Willis, who placed trailers, dubbed “Willis Wagons,” on playgrounds and parking lots of overcrowded Black schools rather than let them enroll in nearby white schools. Combining unseen archival 16mm footage of the March shot by Kartemquin founder Gordon Quinn with the participants’ reflections today, this film connects the forgotten story of one of the largest northern civil rights demonstrations to contemporary issues around race, education, school closings, and youth activism.

Comedy Bel Canto from Donizetti and the Met Gaetano Donizetti’s best-known comic operas are The Elixir of Love and Don Pasquale, but there are many opera lovers who also cherish The Daughter of the Regiment, about an orphan raised by an army troupe who falls in love with a dashing young soldier. That soldier, Tonio, also has a ravishing tenor voice capable of hitting multiple high C’s. In the Metropolitan Opera’s current production, Pretty Yende is the “daughter,” Marie, and Javier Camarena sings the role of Tonio. The action is updated from the early 19th to the early 20th century.

The Met’s Ring Cycle Next season, Lyric Opera of Chicago will finish its new Wagner Ring cycle and present three complete performances of the full four-opera set. This season, the Metropolitan Opera is also presenting Wagner’s epic tale of power, obsession, greed, and love, directed by Robert Lepage and conducted by Philippe Jordan. So Chicago opera lovers can experience two different takes on the full-scale Ring. During March the Met has the opening work of the set, Das Rheingold, which takes place in unlikely, semi-mythical locales: a riverbed, a mountaintop, and the underground dwellings of dwarves. Die Walküre, famous for its Act 3 scene of the nine warrior maidens, the Valkyries, takes place mostly on the earth; the time is still mythical, juxtaposing the worlds of gods, giant, dwarves, and humans, but subtly laying the foundation for what will become the end of the gods and the emerging power of the humans. Greer Grimsley sings Wotan, Christine Goerke is Brünnhilde, Stuart Skelton is Siegmund, Jamie Barton is Fricka.

Riccardo Muti and Rossini After the success of William Tell in the late 1820s, Gioachino Rossini composed no more operas, but that doesn’t mean he stopped work altogether. One of the “late” Rossini works is the Stabat Mater for vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, setting a medieval Latin poem that contemplates the Virgin Mary standing at the cross where Jesus is being crucified. It’s both a devotional work and a compendium of stirring music. Interspersed with the choral movements are solo arias that evoke all the brilliance and virtuosity of the earlier works by one of the great opera composers of all time. The Stabat Mater has long been a favorite and a specialty of Chicago Symphony music director Riccardo Muti, who brought it to Symphony Center in 2018. Among the soloists: tenor Dmitry Korchak and bass-baritone Eric Owens.

Fiesta: Guitars and More Elbio Barilari will examine the lives and works of several great guitar composers from Latin America, including Leo Brouwer (Cuba), Antonio Lauro (Venezuela), and Maximo Diego Pujol (Argentina). Composers from many nations built on the strong traditions inherited from Europe to develop and transform the sound of this instrument that’s central to the Latin-American repertory. He’ll also explore the music of a Caribbean island colonized not by the Spanish but by the French: Haiti. Some important musicians in the classical and folk traditions of Haiti include guitarist Franz Casseus, composerconductor Jean Rudy Perrault, Justine Elie, and Ludovic Lamothe.
