The Guide

Dear Member, Happy New Year! January is always a very exciting month for us as we often debut some of the most highly-anticipated series and content of the year. And so it goes, we are thrilled to bring you what we hope will be the next Masterpiece blockbuster series, about the epic life of Queen Victoria, which will fill the Sunday night time slot that Downton Abbey held to great success. Following Victoria from the time she becomes Queen through her passionate courtship and marriage to Prince Albert, the lavish premiere season of Victoria dramatizes the romance and reign of the girl behind the famous monarch. Also, join us for new seasons of Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Mercy Street, the homegrown drama series set during the Civil War. Leading up to both of these season premieres, you can catch up with an all-day marathon. On January 16, we will debut an all-new channel and live stream offering for kids! You can find our new WTTW/PBS Kids 24/7 service free on over-the-air channel 11-4, Comcast digital channel 368, and RCN channel 39. Or watch the live stream on wttw.com, pbskids.org, and on the PBS KIDS Video App. Together, these new services support our mission to reach all children with high-quality educational content. On WFMT, Lyric Opera’s 2016-17 season continues, where Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines will co-host a live opening-night broadcast of Bellini’s Norma, with superstar soprano Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role. We start the month in Vienna, with our annual broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day concert, this year conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. And January is a month of more special observances: WFMT hosts will remember Martin Luther King Day, Mozart’s 261st birthday, Schubert’s 220th, and the 80th birthday of pre-eminent American composer Philip Glass. Join us for all of this, and more, on WFMT.com, or take us with you via WFMT’s mobile apps for Apple and Android devices. Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

WHEN

Wednesday, January 11 6:00 pm: Season 1 Premiere Screening 7:00 pm: Light Refreshments & Cash Bar

The highly anticipated new Masterpiece series – Victoria – follows the drama of the candid, spirited monarch who was perhaps the first woman to seem to have it all. Join us on the evening of January 11 for a screening of the premiere before it airs on WTTW11. In 1837, a diminutive, neglected teenager is crowned Queen Victoria, navigates the scandal, corruption, and political intrigues of the Court, and soon rises to become the most powerful woman in the world. This new eight-part drama follows Victoria from the time she becomes Queen in 1837 at the age of 18 through her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. Famous for her candor and spirit, Victoria’s often-tumultuous reign lasted for 63 years; she was England’s longest-serving monarch until she was overtaken by Elizabeth II in September, 2015. Tickets to this special premiere event will be available on wttw.com/events.

Shakespeare. You’ve heard of him. Cymbeline has all the vicious insults, bloody blades, cross-dressed ladies, and compromised bedchambers you’ve come to expect from the man. But then things get nuts. It’s a no-holds-barred epic, a dark fairy tale set off by a king’s rash verdict and a princess who won’t stand for her man’s wrongful banishment. America’s Test Kitchen Check, Please! Death in Paradise Father Brown Interview Show with Mark Bazer

Pictured: Julia Collin Davison, America’s Test Kitchen

Photo: William Camargo; Wednesday Journal Media

Mark Bazer, The Interview Show, Fridays beginning January 6, 7:30 pm

Q&A with Mark Bazer, Host of The Interview Show Q: How did The Interview Show get started? A: It started as a live show way back in 2008, before most households owned television sets. Or at least that’s what I told myself. I went to the owners of The Hideout, the bar we film the show at, with an idea: Let me talk to people on your stage each month. And they bought it! From the outset, I thought of the show as taking the clichés of talk shows (the desk, the couch, etc.) and planting them down in a slightly incongruous setting. More important, my hope was to find the sweet spot between NPR’s Fresh Air and a late-night talk show.

Q: How do you choose your guests? A: Read a lot, ask friends who they’re interested in, try to find people from different walks of life. Most of the guests, of course, live in Chicago, so just living here and paying attention to what’s going on helps me. I don’t have to agree with everything my guests say (heck, I shouldn’t agree with everything they say), but I do like to choose guests that I admire: their passion, their work, etc.

Q: Who are some of your most memorable guests and why? A: I loved having David Axelrod on the show. His show was the first we filmed for WTTW. So, I was excited/nervous on multiple fronts. The show went great, though my anxiety did cause a healthy

amount of on-camera sweating. We’ve had a makeup person ever since. This upcoming season, among many others, I am excited for people to see the interviews with opera star Renée Fleming, Goodman Artistic Director Robert Falls, and Ebony magazine editor Kyra Kyles. All felt like real conversations: serious at times, funny at others, good give and take.

Q: Who are your favorite interviewers or talk show hosts and why? A: There’s only one I want to mention! Dick Cavett. He was the inspiration for the show. He could be as witty as anyone, but you never doubted the seriousness of his intent. I could watch his interviews over and over.

Q: Has an interview ever gone south? A: Yes. Do I have to talk about it? I’ll save that for another interview.

Q: Who is your dream guest? A: Anybody who wants to be there, who is into having a conversation not so much to promote something but to have an enjoyable conversation. Oh, specifically? Easy. Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk, my boyhood idol.

Schubert’s Winterreise Live

Classical to Pop and Back

This Viennese tradition continues in 2017 under the dynamic baton of Gustavo Dudamel. The Vienna Philharmonic performs music by the Strauss family in the flower-bedecked Grand Hall of the Musikverein concert hall.

The theme of the lonely wanderer resonates throughout Franz Schubert’s song catalog, perhaps nowhere more powerfully than in the cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey). Mezzo-soprano Julia Bentley and pianist Kuang-Hao Huang bring us a studio performance.

Monday, January 16, 8:00 pm

Join us for a program that celebrates a 21st-century trend: contemporary-music ensembles commissioning composers not to write new pieces, but to arrange music by pop artists. Host Seth Boustead looks at examples of this desire to collaborate across barriers.

Concerts from Shanghai In an historic collaboration, WFMT presents the first-ever broadcast series that U.S. listeners have heard from a Chinese orchestra. In a 13week series, the Shanghai Symphony will be heard under the direction of guest conductors Sir Andrew Davis, Daniele Gatti, Paavo Järvi, Zubin Mehta, and Osmo Vänskä, and joined by several distinguished guest soloists: Lang Lang (January 5), Yo-Yo Ma, Christian Tetzlaff, Maxim Vengerov, and Yuja Wnag. The series will include highlights from the first Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition, with a $100,000 grand prize. It will also include performances by young artists from the Shanghai Orchestra Academy. Asia’s oldest symphony orchestra pioneered the presence of Western classical music in China. Its recent tours have taken it to Vienna, Berlin, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. It’s also noted for having premiered major new compositions by John Corigliano and Tan Dun. Hoyt Smith of KDFC radio in San Francisco will host the broadcasts.
