Dear Member, February can often be a gloomy month here in famously wintery Chicago, but luckily WTTW and WFMT always comes to the rescue with a variety of content that is entertaining, inspiring, and educational. We are especially proud to bring you a wide and diverse array of content in observance of Black History Month, including new profiles of the activist/writer Maya Angelou, congressman and Civil Rights icon John Lewis, and singer Roberta Flack; a new miniseries from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. exploring Africa’s Great Civilizations; online, you can watch Race Underground: American Experience, about the construction of the country’s first subway system and a related local web story on the forgotten history of Chicago’s cable cars. On the entertainment front, we give you front row seats for rollicking new music shows on Soundstage; at two gala opening nights at Lyric Opera (Bizet’s Carmen and Tchaikovsky’s Yevgeny Onegin) and live broadcasts from our own Levin Performance Studio on WFMT; to a celebration of Mozart at New York’s Lincoln Center; to New York City Ballet performances in Paris; to the Library of Congress as Smokey Robinson is honored with this year’s Gershwin Prize; and more.

Returning for a look at memorable movie musicals is Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips, who’ll present morning and evening segments during the week leading up to the Oscars in late February. And visiting our Levin Studio for Live from WFMT this month are the versatile pianist Jenny Lin and singers from Chicago’s acclaimed Haymarket Opera Company. On WFMT.com, learn why Stewart Copeland, drummer and co-founder of The Police, was inspired to compose an opera, The Invention of Morel, and enjoy several stories on African-American music to mark Black History Month. Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise Screening & Discussion Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, from the acclaimed American Masters series, is the first feature documentary on American poet, author, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou. 2-for-1 Tickets to Transit of Venus The Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) continue the company’s 36th season with the Chicago premiere of Transit of Venus by Canadian playwright Maureen Hunter. Inspired by real-life astronomer Le Gentil and his attempt to plot the course of Venus across the sky, Transit of Venus is the antithesis of the adventurer’s tale. Le Gentil puts off marrying the young and willful Celeste and leaves to travel around the world with no thought to those he leaves behind. When he returns, he finds life isn’t where he left it.

Spanning 11 years in the lives of Le Gentil, Celeste, and their companions, Hunter’s play explores issues of faith, solitude, and the human spirit.

Cantelon draws from his knowledge of film scoring to join atmospheric composition, narration by Rushdie, and music by American String Quartet. Explore the deadly August 1, 1966, mass shooting at the University of Texas that left 16 dead. “Tower” reframes the events of that day via the perspectives of those who lived through it, and examines the effects of the shooting over the last 50 years.

This new video series follows the families, workers, and students living through the de facto Illinois state budget cuts, showing the ways it deteriorates the fabric of Illinois communities.

A New Evening for Baroque&Before

Host Candice Agree says her intention on Baroque&Before, which started on WFMT in January 2014, is to rediscover and celebrate the world of early music, from the Baroque and Renaissance eras and the Middle Ages. Some of the earlymusic specialists she’s featured are Jordi Savall with the Hesperion XXI ensemble, soloists from Il Giardino Armonico, the members of Les Violons du Roy and L’Arpeggiata, and countertenor Andreas Scholl. Join her starting this month on Wednesdays at 10:00 pm as she explores a variety of the sounds she calls “timeless as the stones unearthed from the ruins of ancient fortresses”: Mozarabic music, early Christian devotional songs, settings of the Roman Catholic Mass, the plaintive lamentations of the synagogue, the romances of the cavaliers, and the dance tunes of the troubadours.

Leontyne Price

Leontyne Price at 90

Mary Violet Leontyne Price was born 90 years ago this month in Laurel, Mississippi, and became one of the first African-American artists to start at the Metropolitan Opera.

Her voice was described as “lirico spinto,” making it suitable for both lyric-soprano operatic roles and those described as dramatic-soprano parts. She was featured in many Verdi roles, including the title role of Aida and Leonora in Il Trovatore, and also sang the heroines of Mozart and Puccini operas. Ms. Price has been honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a Kennedy Center award, and the National Medal of Arts, in addition to winning 19 Grammys for her opera and song-recital recordings.

In tribute to her 90th birthday and to African-American Heritage Month, Larry Johnson will sample her artistry in a special hourlong edition of Arias and Songs.

Music from the CSO’s Truth to Power Festival During the dark years of the 1930s and 1940s, with worldwide depression and war, three classical composers – Benjamin Britten, Serge Prokofiev, and Dmitri Shostakovich – produced music that stirred people toward the hope of a brighter future. In 2014 the Chicago Symphony Orchestra celebrated the musicians and the era with a three-week festival named Truth to Power. According to the website csosoundsandstories.org: “The phrase…originates from a Quaker treatise published in 1955 that outlined alternatives to violence and became a cornerstone of the pacifist movement.” There are truths, this treatise maintains, that transcend a particular time, place, or culture. In the CSO’s view, the works of Britten, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich – each of whom clashed with power structures in their own nations – celebrate music’s ability to connect people. Guest conductor Jaap van Zweden conducted several concerts during Truth to Power. One of them featured Shostakovich’s powerful Leningrad Symphony, plus pianist Yuja Wang in Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto. Coincidentally, it’s airing on WFMT on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday anniversary: another who spoke truth to power.

The Art of Alfred Cortot Henry Fogel, host of Collectors’ Corner, has planned a miniseries of four broadcasts paying tribute to the Swiss-born French pianist Alfred Cortot (1877-1962). A noted interpreter of piano music by Chopin and Schumann, Cortot – in his parallel role as a conductor – also pioneered French performances of the works of Wagner, and he introduced music by French composers of his own time, including Albert Roussel. He was a noted and influential teacher, and as a chamber musician, collaborated for many years with violinist Jacques Thibaut and cellist Pablo Casals.

In the years after World War II, his career faltered, not only as a natural result of aging, but also because of his perceived collaboration with the Vichy regime during the years when France was occupied by the Nazis.

His pianistic artistry, nevertheless, is upheld by his recordings from the 1920s and 1930s, a prized legacy of notable interpretations.

New Time for the Shanghai Symphony

Broadcast concerts by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra move to 10:00 pm Thursdays as of February 2. This month’s concerts include a concerto for bamboo flute by Guo Wenjing entitled Wild Fire, with Chinese virtuoso flutist Tang Junqiao as the soloist. Premiered in 2010, the work commemorates an incident of group suicide. The composer sought to use the bamboo flute as a symbol of burning rage against injustice, represented by the image of fire.

Another Shanghai broadcast will be guest-conducted by Osmo Vänskä and Steve Reich, and will include Reich’s Tehillim, for chamber orchestra and four women’s voices. This 1981 composition is one of Reich’s first to include a text, and also one of the first where he explored his Jewish roots through music. The texts are from Psalms 18, 19, 34, and 150.

Michael Phillips in Oscar Week

From Broadway Melody to Gigi to this year’s acclaimed La La Land, Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips will lead WFMT listeners up to the 89th Academy Awards by sampling highlights from movie musicals.

There’ll be two daily segments during which Michael will explore this tuneful history, including Oscar winners and “the ones that got away.” Michael came to the Trib in 2002 as a theater critic, having held that post previously at newspapers in Los Angeles, San Diego, St Paul, and Dallas. He’s been a presenter on the Turner Classic Movies cable channel, CBS Sunday Morning, and the syndicated series At the Movies, and has also guested on the public radio show Filmspotting.

We’re delighted to welcome him back to WFMT.
