We’ll feature a new documentary recalling Chicago’s legendary black comedy club, All Jokes Aside, and a new Independent Lens chronicling the Black Panther movement. We will also bring you revealing profiles of “King of the Blues,” B.B. King, and the trailblazing ballerina Misty Copeland, along with tributes to Memphis Soul, Women of Soul, and music legend Ray Charles as part of the In Performance at the White House series. Also this month on WTTW11 and wttw.com, Downton Abbey and Mercy Street continue to enthrall audiences on Sunday nights. The reporting team from PBS NewsHour is busy, providing coverage of the Iowa Caucuses; the New Hampshire primary; and PBS and WETA, the Washington DC station, will produce the Democratic presidential debate from Milwaukee on February 11 at 8:00 pm. NewsHour co-anchors Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff will moderate. WTTW’s digital series Chat, Please! comes back to serve up a rich and varied combination plate of conversations with local restaurateurs, and the season finale of Check, Please! reveals where some of the city’s most prominent local chefs like to dine in their free time. Discover which 2015 program garnered the most votes in our annual Viewers’ Choice Bowl; watch as more notables explore their genealogy on Finding Your Roots; travel to the depths of the ocean with NOVA and to the far reaches of our solar system in the new animated kids series Ready Jet Go!; and enjoy a timely look at the storied career of composer Carole King on the heels of her induction into this year’s Kennedy Center Honors.

98.7WFMT and wfmt.com will celebrate film and cinema, and their relationship to music, in February. Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips will share portions of his favorite film scores, and on the weekend leading up to the Academy Awards, we’ll devote most of our music choices to music written for the movies. February also brings two more Lyric Opera opening nights, Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier and Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet. And visiting Levin Studio for live Impromptus will be mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, Chicago A Cappella, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and violinist Gil Shaham with The Knights. The Saint Sebastian Players (SSP) present William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. On a remote island, Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore order to his universe. He conjures up a storm to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, Prospero’s machinations reveal the true nature of some characters and a royal suitor for his daughter Miranda.

Love is in the air when Lindsay Metzger and Anthony Clark Evans anticipate Valentine’s Day in this month’s Ryan Opera Center recital. The soprano and baritone perform love songs by Richard Strauss and Joaquin Rodrigo.

Founded in 1992, the award-winning Arianna String Quartet tours the US and Brazil this season. In residence at the University of Missouri/St Louis, the group’s latest CD pairs the two quartets by Leos Janacek. Kerry Frumkin hosts.

Live from New York, it’s the renowned Vienna Philharmonic led by Valery Gergiev on the Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. Jeff Spurgeon hosts this concert of music by Wagner, Debussy, and Mussorgsky.

An Audio Film Festival As we look forward to the Academy Awards February 28, WFMT welcomes Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips to explore the wide and varied realm of music written for the silver screen during the 100 yearplus history of the moving-picture industry. Phillips will present daily segments discussing and playing some of his favorite pieces of film music. On the weekend of the Oscars we’ll devote most of our music programming to film scores and to musicians associated with Hollywood.

Leading up to this weekend is a documentary by violinist Daniel Hope, The Hollywood Sound, profiling the European emigré musicians who found a new home in Hollywood during the 1930s and Forties.

The Fishko Files: Some Artistic Celebrities Documentaries during February will feature Sara Fishko as her series The Fishko Files looks at musicians of many stripes. She’ll briefly examine the life and music of the Argentine-American composer Lalo Schifrin, noted for a number of film and TV scores; explore the artistry of the African-American jazz and classical pianist Hazel Scott; and engage the pre-eminent American composer Philip Glass in a one-hour conversation about his life and work.

Glass will be visiting the University of Chicago in mid-February. Also among our February documentaries is Kerry Frumkin’s profile of the distinguished American soprano Leontyne Price.

Leonidas Kavakos and the New York Philharmonic Performing Dutilleux The French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) gave evocative titles to a number of his works. In the case of L’Arbre des Songes (Tree of Dreams) for violin and orchestra, the title is not a tone-painting description, but rather a metaphor for the way the themes develop: ever growing and ever changing, like a tree putting out new branches, shedding and re-growing its leaves through the seasons. The four movements are played without pause, linked by contrasting interludes.

The concerto was composed for Isaac Stern between 1983-85; he gave the world premiere in Paris.

Violinist Leonidas Kavakos plays it with the New York Philharmonic under guest conductor Ivan Fischer.

Jascha Horenstein and Gustav Mahler Born in 1898 in what is now Ukraine, Horenstein moved with his family to Vienna as a child, eventually studying theory and composition at the Vienna Academy. He conducted a variety of Austrian and German orchestras until forced to flee Nazi Germany in the 1930s; he settled in the United States and taught at New York’s New School for Social Research in between conducting engagements in the USA and Europe, remaining active until shortly before his death in 1973. Horenstein is especially remembered as an interpreter, in concert and on records, of the symphonies of Mahler. Henry Fogel has gathered these performances together and is presenting a multiweek mini-series on Collectors’ Corner to this noted interpreter.

Lyric Opera of Chicago Broadcasts Continuing with Der Rosenkavalier Amanda Majeske, a Ryan Opera Center alumna, heads the cast as the Marschallin, a beautiful but aging Viennese noblewoman, and Sophie Koch portrays her young lover, Octavian, who will eventually fall in love with Sophie (Christina Landshamer), who’s actually supposed to marry the Marschallin’s country cousin, Baron Ochs (Matthew Rose). It all unfolds through the gorgeous music of the three acts of Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Silver Rose). Always an audience favorite, this Richard Strauss masterwork is a nostalgic look at a world long gone, blending comedy with poignant reflections on love and the passing of time.

Shanghai Spring: The Chinese Violin The Shanghai Spring International Music Festival was the locale for the world premiere of a famous Chinese concerto: The Butterfly Lovers for violin and orchestra. It is credited with contributing to the popularity of this iconic Western instrument in China. Its Asian parallel, the erhu, is one of China’s most important national instruments, growing from a folk instrument, a street musicians’ staple, to become an integral part of the typical Chinese orchestra.

Host Paolo Pietropaolo will trace the history of these and other stringed instruments as we hear festival performances, incuding Tchaikovsky’s famous violin concerto. The Shanghai Spring series from the WFMT Radio Network continues through the end of February. It’s part of our heralding of Chinese New Year (February 8).

Live from the Met: Maria Stuarda Gaetano Donizetti composed three operas about England’s Tudor period: Anna Bolena, Roberto Devereux, and Maria Stuarda, in which Sondra Radvanovsky will perform the title role live from the Metropolitan Opera this month. Portraying Mary, Queen of Scots, she’s joined by Elza van den Heever as England’s Queen Elizabeth I. The central scene in this celebration of the bel-canto singing style is a lengthy confrontation and duet for the two queens. In real life they never met in person. Elizabeth kept Mary a prisoner for some two decades and finally executed her as a threat to her security on the English throne, but she never actually encountered her or spoke to her in person. Sir David McVicar directed the Met’s production, which is conducted by Riccardo Frizza.
