Inspired by the writings of Gertrude Stein, Toni Morrison, and David Foster Wallace, whose voices capture diverse cultural relevancies through their structure of language, In a Rhythm looks at the syntax of movement – how we apprehend meaning through the juxtaposed dynamics of action and context in time and space. San Francisco Symphony’s Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas and its musicians have been hailed for their innovative programming, and for attracting new audiences. They start a new season with a Stravinsky-Shostakovich concert.

You might call it Bach’s own choir – so it was, once.

The choir of St. Thomas Church, Leipzig, Germany, toured North America last year with a stop at Grace Lutheran Church of River Forest with music by Schütz, Mendelssohn…and Bach.

Jules Massenet’s Cinderella story Cendrillon was recently presented at the Santa Fe Opera. The production moved to Covent Garden; it’s now at the Met, and will come to Lyric Opera in 2019. At the Metropolitan, Joyce DiDonato sings the title role.

Mahler’s Night Song: Symphonic Tour de Force Twice during April, we’ll have symphony orchestra concerts that feature Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 in E Minor, known sometimes as Song of the Night. He worked on his Seventh Symphony starting in the summer of 1904, but the draft and its revisions were a long-drawnout project, and the premiere didn’t take place until September of 1908 in Prague, where he conducted the Czech Philharmonic. (Its first U.S. performance was by the CSO under Frederick Stock’s baton.) Under numerous leaders including onetime principal conductor Bernard Haitink, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has long been viewed as one of the premier interpreter ensembles of the Mahler symphonies. Likewise, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra have won wide recognition for their landmark recorded cycle of those works. Hear both their takes on the Seventh:

From Ravinia 2017: American Reflections with the St. Charles Singers American Reflections is a program that the Chicago-area chamber choir called the St. Charles Singers took on tour to England, then reprised in Bennett Gordon Hall at Ravinia last August. Under the direction of Jeffrey Hunt, the group performed Walden Pond, a cycle by Dominick Argento, as the evening’s centerpiece. The cycle is based on the famous book Walden by Henry David Thoreau.

Also presented were works by Eric Whitacre, Morton Lauridsen, and Randall Thompson, plus arrangements of folksongs and spirituals by Aaron Copland and several others. Kerry Frumkin will host this broadcast.

Olga PeretyatkoMariotti: Lucia at the Met Singing the title role in Donizetti’s bel-canto masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera will be the St Petersburg-born soprano Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti.

The soprano studied in both her native city and Berlin. Her current season includes appearances in Moscow, Bucharest, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Vienna, and Paris, plus her engagements at the Met. Ms Peretyatko-Mariotti has made two recordings devoted to bel-canto repertory and one entitled Russian Light, arias and songs by Russian composers. At the Met she’s previously sung Violetta in La traviata and Gilda in Rigoletto.

Now audiences will get to hear her in Lucia’s famous Mad Scene.

Ryan Opera Center: Annual Rising Stars Concert The Ryan Opera Center of Lyric Opera presents its annual Rising Stars concert Saturday, April 7, and WFMT will record it to broadcast the following evening. Arias, ensembles, and scenes from a variety of operas will be performed by sopranos Whitney Morrison, Diana Newman, and Ann Toomey; mezzo-soprano Lindsay Metzger; contralto Lauren Decker; tenors Alec Carlson, Josh Loevll, and Mario Rojas; baritones Emmett O’Hanlon and Takaoki Onishi; bass-baritone Alan Higgs; and bass Patrick Guetti. Pianist Madeline Slettedahl is also on this year’s Ryan roster. The Ryan program is administered by director Dan Novak, music director Craig Terry, director of vocal studies Julia Faulkner, and advisor Renée Fleming. The singers will appear on Rising Stars with the Lyric Opera Orchestra.

Lisa Flynn and Lyric’s Roger Pines will co-host the broadcast.

Grant Park Music Festival 2017: Rachmaninoff The Grant Park Chorus last summer presented two performances of Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil (Vespers), one of the all-time greatest works of a cappella choral music.

It was a personal favorite of the composer’s among his creations, and has often been singled out as his masterpiece. Consisting of 15 movements, the work draws on sacred texts from the Vespers, the Matins, and the first liturgical hour of the Russian Orthodox Church. Many of the movements are based on ancient liturgical chants.

Rachmaninoff completed it in 1915 and it was premiered that year in Moscow, during World War I, as a benefit for the Russian war effort. It was enthusiastically received, but the initial success was blunted a couple of years later in the wake of the Russian Revolution, when the new government condemned religious music. Rachmaninoff himself would leave his homeland shortly following the revolution, to make a new home and career for himself in the Western world. Performances of the All-Night Vigil are “events” in the sense that the work is a technical and musical challenge for choirs, and also because of the work’s length, which is slightly over an hour. WFMT is delighted to have this chance to share the Grant Park Chorus’s performance from the South Shore Cultural Center under the direction of Christopher Bell.

New from the Met: The Exterminating Angel This new production and US premiere was a highlight of fall 2017 at the Metropolitan Opera, and a recorded performance is included in this month’s sequence of Saturdaymatinee broadcasts. The innovative and acclaimed British-born composer Thomas Adès based his 2016 opera on the classic film by Luis Buñuel of the same name. It was premiered at that summer’s Salzburg Festival.

The plot is a surreal fantasy about an elite group of dinner-party guests who find themselves inexplicably imprisoned in the living room of their hosts’ home after dinner. Over the next couple of days they experience hunger, thirst, and eventually delusions and hallucinations. One guest dies; another is singled out for a sacrifice. The guests suddenly escape as inexplicably as they were imprisoned, but will this salvation last? Adès himself is the conductor of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and a cast including Alice Coote, Iestyn Davies, Christian Van Horn, and John Tomlinson.

Olivier Messiaen

The Chicago Symphony: Messiaen’s Turangalila In spring 2015, guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony, a work that also features the electronic sounds of the instrument called ondes martenot. The title comes from two Sanskrit words, the first meaning Time and the second meaning Love.

When the work was completed in 1948, the composer called it a song of love; the original inspiration was the legend of Tristan and Isolde. In several contrasting movements, it lasts slightly over an hour. Messiaen has been described as experiencing synesthesia, in which the brain associates sounds with colors, and the harmonies and timbres of Turangalila are most definitely colorful in the acoustic sense. Words that have been used to characterize the symphony include “ecstatic” and “otherworldly.” Salonen, who is a composer himself as well as a conductor, once recalled the shock he felt when he first heard this symphony, saying that it showed him a new kind of aural landscape. He felt inspired by it to write music himself.

Thibaudet, who plays the symphony’s piano part, will open the program with a performance of Maurice Ravel’s G Major Piano Concerto.
