From the President & CEO
Dear Member,
This month, we’re excited to launch a new season of Chicago Stories, WTTW’s awardwinning documentary series that uncovers the sweeping history, rich diversity, and breadth of human experience that has shaped our great American city. Each Friday night, we’ll premiere one of five new original films, beginning with Legendary Blizzards, a look back at two epic Chicago snowstorms, how Chicagoans experienced them, and the political fallout that resulted. Turn to page 4 for reflections from the producer, and explore the companion website on September 26.
Also on WTTW this month, we’ll bring you new episodes of America’s Test Kitchen, Cook’s Country, and Pati’s Mexican Table. As Hispanic Heritage Month commences, watch for profiles of Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco and Cuban entertainer Omara Portuondo of the Buena Vista Social Club, plus the 38th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards Also, you won’t want to miss a new miniseries from NOVA that traces the origins of the human species ; Sacred Planet with Gulnaz Khan, which explores the effects of climate change on sacred places; and another season of Big Cats 24/7 that returns to Boswana to observe – up close and personal – more lions, cheetahs, and leopards in the wild.
On WFMT, listen for a new series of performances by the New York Philharmonic – in September, these will include a truly unique program in which the NYP’s artist-in-residence Yuja Wang serves as both soloist and orchestra leader; the season debut of conductor Gustavo Dudamel as music and artistic director designate; and a world premiere of a work by soprano Kate Soper, Orpheus Orchestra Opus Onus, in which she also performs as soloist. Also join us for weekly programs recorded at this year’s Ravinia Festival, and from the Chicago Symphony, a special showcase for the orchestra’s principal trumpet Esteban Batallán, conducted by Riccardo Muti.
On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, we invite you to enjoy our new fall season of outstanding public media programming, made possible by your support. We hope you’ll share the benefits of membership with a friend and, if you’re not already a monthly sustainer, consider becoming one today. It’s a simple, convenient way to help ensure these programs continue throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

A Q&A with Producer Eddie Griffin
Anew season of WTTW’s documentary series Chicago Stories launches this month, and includes a look back at a notorious unsolved murder case that still impacts our everyday lives; the saga of a governor whose insatiable thirst for wealth and influence led to his downfall; the origins of many of the foods that are synonymous with Chicago; and the history of Marshall Field’s department store and its whimsical holiday decorations.
The season kicks off with a tale of two deadly blizzards – one of which dealt a fatal blow to the political career of one mayor and jumpstarted the campaign of another, changing the city’s political landscape forever. The film’s producer, Eddie Griffin, explains what makes this a quintessential Chicago story, and what he learned about our city along the way.
The Guide: Why did you feel it was important to tell this story?
Eddie Griffin: When people talk about legendary blizzards in Chicago, they usually do it with a smile. Even if you hate the cold or shoveling the sidewalk, there’s something charming about snowfall. We romanticize our memories of snow days, of building snow forts, of climbing snow banks. There’s a nostalgic bond we share as a city when we experience a blizzard. Chicago Stories strives to paint the full picture. There were real consequences, real tragedies, and real lives changed in these blizzards. We want
to make sure everyone gets the full scope of these iconic moments.
The Guide: The film focuses mostly on the blizzards of 1967 and 1979. How were those storms similar, and how were they different?
Griffin: They were pretty close in total snowfall. You see the same sort of obstructions in both; abandoned cars, clogged expressways, the airports were closed, the CTA shut down, and the Loop ground to a halt. But the difference, and this is what the film is about, was the reaction from City Hall. In 1967, Mayor Richard J. Daley was calm and collected. He basically said “yeah, there’s a lot of snow, we’ll get rid of it as soon as we can. In the meantime, grab a shovel and help your neighbor dig out.” And people pretty much fell in line. It was a different story in 1979. Patience had run out. That quaint charm of taking a “snow day” had disappeared. People in Chicago didn’t cut Mayor Michael Bilandic the same amount of
Commuters near State Street in the Loop trying to get to work amid large snow piles following the 1967 Chicago blizzard.
slack afforded earlier to Mayor Daley. Bilandic was not the same strong personality as Daley. Bilandic was like a deer in headlights, and frustrated citizens ate him up.
The Guide: The city’s best-known meteorologist, Tom Skilling, is interviewed in the documentary. How did his unique insights contribute to this story?
Griffin: All the nice things said, all the praise, all the love shown to Tom Skilling is 100% deserved. He’s thoughtful. When I interviewed him, you could tell how much he loves Chicago. It’s completely authentic. And his memory recall is insane. He was able to take us step by step, moment by moment, through the 1979 blizzard…it was 45 years ago and he can describe the conditions like it was yesterday. That’s priceless – it helped us give the story a personal touch.
The Guide: What do you think city officials – and Chicagoans who experienced them – learned from these epic snowstorms?
" Everyone thought spring had arrived early. And then…all hell broke loose.
Temperatures plummeted, the snow followed, and the rest is history."
Griffin: I think city officials in Chicago, and around the country too, learned that this could happen anywhere. I don’t mean the snow – I mean the political fallout. Mayor Bilandic lost reelection because his snow removal plan failed. Now, I’d like to say that city officials realized that they needed to have a better plan, but more than likely they realized they needed to have the appearance of a better plan.
The Guide: You touch briefly on the 2011 “Snowmageddon” blizzard as well. What was unique about this storm?
Griffin: That was all about timing, and in this case, the timing was terrible. The blizzard hit during rush hour. We knew the snow was coming, it wasn’t a surprise, and still people didn’t take all the precautions. Jumping on Lake Shore Drive during a blizzard…probably not a great idea. But on the bright side, we were in the social media age, so we got to follow the chaos in real time. People were able to post photos of their cars buried under the snow and tweet
clever names like Snowmageddon, Snowpocalpyse, and SnOMG.
The Guide: In the course of producing this film, did you learn anything that surprised you?
Griffin: Haha! I learned that the old adage “if you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes” is true for Chicago! The day before the blizzard of 1967 hit, the temperature in Chicago was 60+ degrees. We have film of people biking and picnicking in Lincoln Park. Everyone thought spring had arrived early. And then… all hell broke loose. Temperatures plummeted, the snow followed, and the rest is history.
The Guide: What do you hope viewers take away from this story?
Griffin: You can’t help but feel a little sympathy for Mayor Michael Bilandic. Every other mayor, every other civic leader, likely couldn’t have done much better. Weather conditions during the blizzard of 1979 were just too nasty. All that snow layered into all that ice – there was no way to keep the city running. But that’s the job of the mayor, that’s the job of our elected officials. It’s okay to hold our politicians to high standards. It’s nothing personal – you make it work or you take the heat. Bilandic couldn't make it work, so he paid the price.

Chicago Stories: Legendary Blizzards (New Season)
It takes a lot to stop the city of Chicago in its tracks. But two deadly blizzards in 1967 and 1979, both of which seemingly came out of nowhere, did just that. The city’s woefully inadequate response to the second one dealt a fatal blow to the political career of one mayor, Michael Bilandic, and jumpstarted the nascent campaign of another: Jane Byrne. Audionarrated descriptions are available.

On 15th, Dutch violinist Janine Jansen is the soloist when James Gaffigan conducts the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Bernstein’s “Serenade after Plato’s Symposium.” On the 22nd, English pianist Paul Lewis, a Beethoven specialist, performs the composer’s Third Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor John Storgårds. A native of the town of Barri in Galicia, Esteban Batallán was appointed principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by Riccardo Muti in 2019. The Spaniard succeeded Christopher Martin and his own “idol of youth,” the legendary Adolph “Bud” Herseth. Prior to his appointment, Batallán had already performed with the CSO as a guest musician and gained recognition for his powerful, expressive playing. In 2023, he took a brief hiatus from Chicago to perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra, stepping in as guest principal trumpet during a transitional period in their brass section. Despite speculation about a permanent move, Batallán returned to his post in Chicago. This concert from earlier this summer celebrates his commitment to CSO with his first subscription appearance as concerto soloist (trumpet concertos by Telemann and Michael Haydn conducted by Muti) and builds upon his reputation as one of the leading orchestral trumpeters of his generation.

Introductions
Steelpan virtuoso and pianist Jaden Teague-Núñez is a senior at DeKalb High School. Jaden’s mother, Lorena Núñez, is the former principal viola of the Panama National Symphony and his father is the renowned pannist and educator Liam Teague. Born in Panama City, Panama, Jaden and his family moved to the United States in 2011. Jaden began studying both steelpan and piano (classical and jazz) at ages 8 and 10, respectively, and has added drums and other percussion instruments to his skillset. Jaden made history in 2024 by being the first steelpan player to win the Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition. As last year’s competition winner, Jaden made his CSO debut earlier this spring. Jaden continues to develop as a performer, balancing school and performance, while steadily building an international profile as one of the steelpan’s most promising young ambassadors. He returns to Introductions for a live solo recital on which he will perform as both pianist and pannist. Hosted by Robbie Ellis.

New York Philharmonic
Three unique artists lead the Philharmonic in four dynamic programs this month. On September 4th, Nathalie Stutzmann conducts The Ring Without Words, a 75-minute distillation of Wagner’s Ring Cycle created by Lorin Maazel. The French conductor and contralto, music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, is only the second woman in history to lead a major American orchestra. On the 11th, Yuja Wang is billed as “pianist/leader” for a unique program of 20th-century works: Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, Janáček’s Capriccio for Piano Left-Hand and Chamber Ensemble, and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in its original jazz-band version. On the 18th, Gustavo Dudamel takes the podium for a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth with performances of his Mother Goose Suite, a suite from Daphnis et Chloé; and the world premiere of a work Ravel wrote in his student days. Dudamel, the orchestra’s Music and Artistic Director Designate, returns on the 25th to lead symphonies by Stravinsky and Philip Glass, plus the world premiere of Kate Soper’s Orpheus Orchestra Opus Onus with the composer as soprano soloist.

Pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi was born in Turin on November 23, 1955. After graduating from conservatories in Turin and Milan, he went on to study with the avant-garde Luciano Berio and Karlheinz Stockhausen, a pioneer of electronic music. In 1982, Einaudi’s talents won him a scholarship to the Tanglewood Music Festival, where he first encountered American minimalism. He spent the next several years composing for the ballet, the cinema, and the theater, until his first solo album, Le Onde (1996), brought him to the world’s attention. Einaudi is now the most streamed classical artist of all time, averaging 9 billion streams a year. He joins WFMT to discuss his career in film and tv scores, and to share his new album The Summer Portraits. Einaudi’s North American concert tour of The Summer Portraits reaches Chicago later this month.

Folkstage
For almost a decade, Jenny Bienemann has captured the extraordinary in the everyday through haiku and photography. In Bienemann’s Haiku Milieu Concerts, acclaimed songwriters bring the images and poetry to life. Each performer selects one of her haiku and accompanying photographs, then creates an original song inspired by it. The new song need not include the haiku’s words or reference the image directly. It simply must grow from the place where the haiku takes the artist. The result is an evening of wholly original music, sometimes poignant, sometimes playful, each piece growing from the spark of a single haiku. Host Marilyn Rea Beyer welcomes Naomi Ashley, Jenny Bienemann, Robin Bienemann, Anne Heaton, Emily Hurd, Aaron Kelly, and Andrew Sa to the Levin Performance Studio for the debut of Haiku Milieu live on Folkstage Saturday, September 27 8:00 pm

Lyric Opera audiences have had the chance to experience her in ten leading roles, and she returns to Chicago to add two more (Despina in Così fan tutte and Catrina in El último sueño de Frida y Diego) in the upcoming season.
