From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

March is Women’s History Month, the annual celebration of trailblazing women who have made important contributions to our society and culture. Throughout the month, we will present profiles of remarkable women in our history including Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and Zora Neale Hurston on American Experience, Twyla Tharp and Amy Tan on American Masters, and Ida B. Wells and Jane Addams on Chicago Stories.

Also this month on WTTW, we present the new Sunday night Masterpiece drama series Nolly, in which the title character is played by two-time Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter. Noele “Nolly” Gordon, one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and ’70s, whose unceremonious dismissal from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. A bold exploration of how the establishment turns on women who refuse to play by the rules, Nolly is an outrageously fun and wildly entertaining ride through Gordon’s most tumultuous years, and a sharp, affectionate, and heartbreaking portrait of a forgotten icon. Turn to page 4 for an interview with Carter about what it was like to play this role.

WFMT kicks off Women’s History Month with a special edition of Introductions featuring works by female composers – including Fanny Mendelssohn, Jessie Montgomery, and Cécile Chaminade – performed by young local musicians. Dame Jane Glover will lead Music of the Baroque’s performance of the St. Matthew Passion, Bach’s dramatic sacred masterpiece; and listen for Lise Davidsen as she returns to the Metropolitan Opera as Leonora in a new production of Verdi’s La forza del destino, and an interview with Grammy-winning American soprano Sylvia McNair on Listening to Singers.

As we welcome spring to Chicago, we are grateful for your support.

Sincerely,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

A Q&A with

Helena Bonham Carter

Nolly on Masterpiece

A sharp, affectionate portrait of a forgotten icon

In a new Sunday night miniseries, Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning actor Helena Bonham Carter stars as Noele (or "Nolly" to her friends) Gordon, a British soap opera star who was a legend in her own lifetime and one of the most famous people in Britain. Read what she has to say about the real-life Nolly and how she approached playing her.

Please tell us, in a nutshell, what Nolly is about.

Helena Bonham Carter: It’s the story of Noele Gordon, whose nickname was “Nolly.” She was the lead actress in a hugely popular British soap

opera called Crossroads from 1964 to 1981, when she was, abruptly and without warning, fired. Viewers never knew why, and neither did she. Series creator Russell Davies thought she was treated appallingly and wanted to give her the sendoff she deserved.

" I found her ferocity – her sheer spirit –really inspiring and hilarious, too."

Were you aware of Noele Gordon as a person before taking on the role? And did you watch Crossroads?

HBC: I was very familiar with Crossroads, given my age – 56 – but I don’t think we actually watched it regularly. It was just on in the background as I was growing up. I didn’t remember Noele as more than a redheaded woman who owned a motel. Although at the time, didn’t know exactly what a motel was!

Did you do much research in preparing for the role? What made Nolly tick?

HBC: I’ve got files and files on the woman! I spent a long time, as I tend to with every part, unearthing, excavating, and going in search of her. I read her autobiography, which is a hilarious read, and spoke to all her

friends; it was very telling because they really loved her. They said she was somebody who had strong opinions and was a formidable character, but who also had a huge heart. She was a dedicated professional – and she ran the ship!

I did have an army of people around me to help me find Nolly in physical ways, and Neil Swain, my voice coach, helped me with Noele’s huge vocal muscularity.

What attracted you to the role of Nolly?

HBC: I’m a total Noele Gordon nerd! I love any character that has so many colors to play. And Russell’s script was so clearly written – she fizzed off the page. The first thing I did was watch Nolly’s appearance on The Russell Harty Show on the night her last episode aired. She sang with such defiance, and her interview has a wow factor – she didn’t let them get away with that treatment of her. I found her ferocity – her sheer spirit –really inspiring, too. If you gave the same attributes to a man – forceful, opinionated, bossy, knew what they wanted, told everyone what to do –would it have been seen as a problem? I don’t think so.

Nolly is a powerful woman in a very male-dominated world. The show is set in the early ‘80s, but would you say it’s relevant to what’s going on in today’s world?

HBC: We are making progress, but there’s still chronic ageism, isn’t there? Our appearance is constantly a factor. Just because we haven’t got the bouncy collagen cheeks, it doesn’t mean that we’re any less valid. Nolly is a bit of a MeToo story, but without the sex. It’s men in offices in suits deciding on what women should be doing, what they should be like. There’s a scene where Nolly rails against “those men” that really encapsulates a lot of the anger that

women feel as strongly today as then. One of my favorite parts of the whole piece is what she says about single women – “the silent army of women with no name.” If you’re a woman and you don’t have a husband or children, if you’re not defined by a man, you’re immediately regarded in some way as having failed.

The other side to Nolly is that it’s really good fun.

HBC: It’s unbelievable. Everything in the show actually happened, which is completely bonkers, such as when the cast are all trying to find out how my character is going be killed off. The absurdity of the storylines was hilarious, and the comedy is in the writing.

There’s a beautiful relationship at the heart of the show between Nolly and Tony [Adams, played by Augustus Prew]. You don’t often see that sort of relationship on TV.

Watch Nolly on Sundays, March 17-31 at 8:00 pm on WTTW, wttw.com, and the PBS app.

" I hope it inspires the Nolly within all of us to become somebody who won’t go quietly and won’t brook any mistreatment."

HBC: I think it’s very original. Tony speaks with such love for Nolly, but he doesn’t whitewash her. He was her co-star, tenant, driver, you name it! He had such fun with her and yes, among other things, it is sort of a love story between them.

The drama is set almost 40 years ago, but do you think it will resonate with younger audiences?

HBC: Yes, it’s still about lots of things that happen now. I think older audiences will be reminded of these Crossroads characters they enjoyed, and hopefully watching it will create a nostalgic bubble for them.

What do you think makes TV such a special medium?

HBC: I think it is sometimes how people experience the world, through that little box. You can travel anywhere and everywhere, back in time and forward in time like Doctor Who himself! TV is accessible to everyone, and it’s a connector for people, too, as loneliness in the world is escalating.

What do you hope audiences will take away from the series?

HBC: For me, personally, I hope it inspires the Nolly within all of us to become somebody who won’t go quietly and won’t brook any mistreatment. Hopefully it’ll make people laugh and also make them cry. And at the end of the day, I hope it takes people out of the greyness of their day.

Moynihan: American Masters

Daniel Patrick Moynihan was the quintessential American poetpolitician. He alone infused public policy with a language, literature, and lyricism that no American public figure in the latter half of the twentieth century could match. This is a personal look at a public man who was not only an intellectual but also an aesthete who was deeply committed to making an inimitable impact on the world.

In the Spotlight

Best of Studs Terkel

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a passionate champion of mental health, caregiving, and women’s rights, passed away last November at the age of 96. She was married to President Jimmy Carter for 77 years. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” President Carter said. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.” WFMT revisits the Carters’ 1987 conversation with Studs Terkel on the topic of their Book Everything to Gain: Making the Most With the Rest of Your Life, written when they had been married for 40 years.

The St. Matthew Passion Music of the Baroque’s ambitious 2022-23 season culminated in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, the daunting masterpiece which was originally scheduled as a highlight for 2021. Considered to be one of the greatest achievements in Western classical music, the Passion is scored for double chorus, double orchestra, children’s chorus, and six soloists. Last April, Music of the Baroque triumphed in their necessarily postponed performances of the Passion, owing much to the Evangelist of tenor Gwilym Bowen — a theatrical storyteller with a youthful but expressive tone, detailed attention to the vast amounts of text, and a commitment to the drama that commanded the audience’s attention.
