Happy New Year! As we usher in 2024 on WTTW, we’re excited to welcome back several member favorites including the heartwarming All Creatures Great and Small, based on the books by James Herriot and set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s and ’40s. On page 4, Nicholas Ralph, the young actor who plays Herriot, shares an inside look at what his character is thinking as season 4 begins, and what it’s like to work with the new actors – human and animal – who have joined the cast this season. Also in January, we’ll take you back to Victorian London with new episodes of Miss Scarlet and the Duke and to the quaint fictional village of Portwenn, Cornwall for the 10th and final season of Doc Martin. In addition, we round out Sunday nights with a new series, Funny Woman, about a small-town beauty queen who attempts to make it big in TV comedy in 1960s London. And from Australia, we’ll bring you Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, following the niece of a famous woman detective who is investigating her aunt's disappearance. T
he heartwarming series All Creatures Great and Small, based on the series of books by James Herriot, brings us back to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales for a fourth season on Sundays beginning January 7 at 8:00 pm. Actor Nicholas Ralph, who portrays Herriot, shares his thoughts about the crossroads at which his character finds himself this season, as World War II is affecting everyone in different ways.

a sick dog. James has some difficulties with Wesley, but we find out why as the episode goes on. The great thing about James and all the vets in the show is that they look after the owners as well as their animals, and that’s the case with James and Wesley Binks. We have some wonderful guest actors coming in this season. It’s a real treat every year to work with people who have such a wealth of experience and knowledge. I learn a lot from working with these actors, and they are all class acts.
Where do we fi nd James at the start of season four?
How does James feel about the war now that he could get called up at any time? How is it affecting him?
At the end of the previous season, both James and Tristan enlisted, and then Tristan got called up and James didn’t. So James is still working at the practice as spring 1940 arrives, and he knows he could be called up at any time. As the season kicks o, James encounters a boy who is a bit of a terror, Wesley Binks, and he has
With James, it’s always a battle between heart and mind, and that continues this season. James wants to do his bit, but he’s also just gotten married. Back then, children seemed to come along more quickly, but in a war, people left and didn’t come back, so there’s that to worry about. Of course, it’s not just James who

feels this – it’s Helen as well. She’s moved to Skeldale and she left her family back at the farm. So James has settled in well to married life? I think he has. He and Helen have made a lovely home for themselves within Skeldale House. They have their own little world away from everyone else – they can be far more tactile and can speak a lot more freely there. Their home is becoming more and more comfortable all the time. You touched on this earlier, but do you think the war might change what would normally be the next step for Helen and James – starting a family?
energy, which changes the dynamics quite a bit. How was it having James Anthony-Rose on set as a new member of the cast? It did feel like Jamie had been there so much longer than he had – he just fitted right in from the get-go. We see James almost being like Siegfried was when James first arrived. He tries to be a kind of teacher for Richard in that way. It gives Mrs. Hall someone else to look after as well. It’s really nice to see how everyone in Skeldale adapts. Do you think James has got better at helping animals and their owners as time has gone on?
We have a boxer dog who’s antisocial, which is very funny. That’s with lovely Mrs. Pumphrey, so you can imagine that’s a lot of fun. There are some goats that get loose in Skeldale and run amok. The animals were trained so well – the animal wrangler did it with a buzzer and some food. The wrangler would press the buzzer and the goats would know that’s where the food was. Do you feel like an old timer on the show now, with a new boy on set? Yes! Carmody and James had a similar start in that Carmody, much like James at the beginning, is book smart but doesn’t have much practical experience. It was like art imitating life in that I could give Jamie little
Yeah, absolutely. No one knows how long World War II is going to last, and it factors heavily into their decision whether or not to start a family. I think it’s fairly obvious that they both want to. And James must be missing Tristan, as a friend but also at the practice? Yeah, absolutely he misses Tristan. He’s like his best friend and his brother, and he misses not only just the social side of it but also the practical side. James is having to do a lot more work now because Tristan is gone, and I think he would be quite happy to have a more help around the practice. Do you think Tristan not being there has changed Siegfried and James’ relationship? Definitely. When you take away a big character like Tristan, things are always going to change. I think one of my lines was, “When did I become Tristan?” because Siegfried is having a bit of a go at him. James is used to being the golden boy.

What I love about Richard Carmody first of all is that he’s a character from the books, which is always great. Secondly, he’s very different from anyone in the house, especially Tristan. He brings a completely different
time, professionally and personally. We really see his skill set blossom this series. That’s very much a part of the world of James Herriot - the vets have so much compassion and patience, and it’s a huge part of the warmth of this show. And we see a lot of different animals this series?
pointers that I have picked up over the years about working with certain animals. It was nice to be able to pass on a bit of what I’ve learned from four years on this show.

Nazi Town USA: American Experience In February 1939, more than 20,000 Americans filled Madison Square Garden for an event billed as a “Pro-American Rally” – its keynote speaker headed the German American Bund, an organization that collaborated with the Ku Klux Klan and ran dozens of children’s summer camps promoting Nazi ideology. This film tells the largely unknown story of this organization that represented what experts believe was a “very real threat of fascist subversion in the United States.”

Awadagin Pratt
Minnesota Orchestra Three musical luminaries with local ties come together for a performance in the Minnesota Orchestra New Year’s Celebration. Pianist Awadagin Pratt, who grew up in Normal, Illinois and studied music at U of I, commissioned Jessie Montgomery (CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence) to write a work for his recent new album. The resulting concerto, Rounds, quickly became a crowdpleaser that Pratt has performed with over 30 orchestras since its premiere. Chicago Sinfonietta music director Mei-Ann Chen leads the orchestra in the program that also features music by Leonard Bernstein and Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Folkstage: Michael J. Miles and Jill Kaeding During the pandemic, banjo virtuoso and composer Michael J. Miles returned to his surprising all-banjo take on Bach’s cello suites, 1997’s American Bach. With renowned classical, jazz, and blues cellist Jill Kaeding, Miles has created American Bach Revisited which also includes Miles’s original “Chicago Suite,” evoking his hometown city’s streets. They have honed their live concert version for what promises to be a genuinely unique edition of Folkstage broadcast live from WFMT’s Levin Studio.

The program includes Brett Dean’s Cello Concerto written for German cellist Alban Gerhardt.
