A spectacular fair that brought the world to Chicago’s South Side. Toys that forever changed the way we play. Skyscrapers that transformed Chicago’s skyline and influenced architecture around the world. An immigrant community that overcame prejudice and helped shape the soul of the city. Don’t miss these captivating new films on Friday evenings. On page 4, producer-writers Tania Lindsay and Peter Marks and digital producer Meredith Francis reflect on the process of transporting audiences back to the 19th century to experience the World’s Fair. Families are in for a special adventure this month as Nature teams up with Sesame Street for a new primetime special, Sesame Street and the Great Elephant Adventure. Sesame Street’s Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Nina travel to Kenya to meet an orphaned elephant and discover the country’s extraordinary wildlife along the way. Drama fans can look forward to new seasons of Professor T, Maigret, and The Gold. Also this month, a new NOVA miniseries explores the remarkable story of evolution, and Pati Jinich Explores Panamericana returns as the popular culinary host travels through Montana and Wyoming, immersing herself in the people, food, and cultures of the American West. And ahead of the midterm elections, WTTW News will present two candidate forums featuring the contenders for Illinois governor and the U.S. Senate, moderated by Brandis Friedman. On WFMT, October brings a new season of Live from WFMT. One of Chicago’s busiest pianists, Victor Santiago Asunción, returns to the Fay and Daniel Levin Studio with cellist Rainer Crosett. The following week, Chroma, a chamber choir founded by LaRob K. Rafael, presents its We the People program. The weekly Los Angeles Philharmonic series returns as well, with three concerts conducted by outgoing music director Gustavo Dudamel. The programs include the world premiere of Ellen Reid’s Earth Between Oceans; the U.S. premiere of John Adams’s Frenzy: A Short Symphony; and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection. And in new Exploring Music episodes, get to know host Peter van de Graaff through his own musical favorites and discoveries, from Bach to Bax and Purcell to Piston, with familiar masterpieces alongside lesser-known works. The Fair That Changed Chicago Inside the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 • by Daniel Hautzinger

MORE THAN A CENTURY after the World’s Columbian Exposition dazzled millions of visitors, its influence can still be felt across Chicago – in its museums and parks, on the Midway Plaisance, and even in such everyday pleasures as the Ferris wheel and the brownie.

“This fair not only changed Chicago, it shaped the American imagination,” says Peter Marks, a producer and writer of the new documentary The World’s Fair of 1893, which kicks off a new season of Chicago Stories on Friday, October 2 at 8:00 pm and streams on the PBS app and on the companion website at wttw.com/ chicagostories. The fair’s reach extended far beyond Chicago. Walt Disney’s father worked as a carpenter on its construction, while L. Frank Baum attended the exposition 4

years before publishing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, whose illustrations of the Emerald City look, as Marks puts it, “an awful lot like the White City.” The fair also introduced visitors to new products and technologies, helped popularize everything from Vienna Beef to the zipper, and presented a rapidly growing Chicago to the world as a city capable of thinking – and building – on an astonishing scale.

But the story of the fair is more complicated than its gleaming White City. It encompasses ambition and exclusion, innovation, and tragedy, enduring myths and surprising legacies that remain visible in Chicago today. We spoke with Marks, fellow producer and writer Tania Lindsay, and digital producer Meredith Francis about what the fair meant to Chicago, what they

discovered while making the documentary and companion website, and how much of the 1893 exposition is still with us.

The Guide: Why is this World’s Fair so important to Chicago? Peter Marks: This is the moment Chicago announced itself to the world. Only 20 years after the Great Fire, Chicago had transformed into an economic powerhouse and the birthplace of the skyscraper. [The skyscraper is the subject of another new Chicago Stories.] But people, especially New Yorkers, still dismissed us as a 'smelly cow town.’ When Chicago beat out New York for the privilege of hosting the World’s Fair, Daniel Burnham and John Root had less than three years to turn a swamp in Jackson Park into a city that would dazzle and delight the world. visitors later, nobody could call Chicago a cow town anymore.

The Guide: What is something new that you learned in making this documentary?

Tania Lindsay: It put the city on the map as a rival to New York and Paris. It also physically reshaped the city and seeded institutions, ideas, and products we still use daily.

Lindsay: That brownies can be highly controversial. While Bertha Palmer’s kitchen at the Palmer House Hotel is given credit as inventor of the beloved brownie, others question whether that apricot-glazed confection should be considered a brownie at all. It’s a highly sensitive topic. Some historians

The Guide: Why revisit the World’s Fair now?

Lindsay: Partly because there is no bad time to revisit the wonder that was the White City. And partly to remind Chicago of something about itself: that this is a city with a long history of doing hard and wonderful things, if imperfectly, and showing the world that we are much more than however the news portrays us in any given year. The imperfect part matters too, and while we celebrate all the glorious wonders of the fair, the film doesn’t skip the hard parts, like who got left out, who got taken advantage of – or worse – and who carried on despite tragedy. The Museum of Science & Industry, circa 1893 Marks: I think there’s something valuable about remembering a moment when Chicago took on the impossible. The fair is a reminder of Chicago’s “I Will” spirit, and what we can accomplish when we think big.

Francis: On the companion website, we want people to be able to immerse themselves in this world, and to be able to imagine what it might have been like to attend the fair. Our talented graphics team has created a really cool 3D imagining of what it would have been like to walk through the fair. It gives you a sense of just how expansive it was, and what it took to achieve that. The Guide: What’s your favorite lasting impact of the fair? Marks: For me, it’s Da n iel Burnham’s vision. The White City helped inspire the City Beautiful movement and Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago. There are times when our skyline, parks, and museums still take my breath away.

The Guide: How did you try to take a new approach towards a topic about wh ich ma ny Chicagoans already know? Marks: One of the things we wanted to do was separate H.H. Holmes the murderer from H.H. Holmes the myth. the Midway Plaisance at the University of Chicago, that’s where belly dancers once strutted and the first Ferris wheel spun. The Museum of Science & Industry was originally the Palace of Fine Arts. The Art Institute was created for the fair. There’s a ticket booth tucked in the yard of a private residence. The Obama Presidential Library rises on ground where the Horticulture and Women’s Building once stood. The fair is still very much around us if you know where to look.

The Guide: What’s something that most Chicagoans don’t know about the fair? Marks: Most Chicagoans think the World’s Fair vanished, but it didn’t. If you walk down

Francis: There are a couple of things that I would argue have made my life better: An early model of the modern dishwasher (invented by a woman!), and the brownie. Lindsay: My favorite may well be the Ferris Wheel. I love that it exists because Chicago had a serious case of envy and wanted to top Paris’s 1889 World’s Fair stunner, the Eiffel Tower. George Ferris engineered the first-of-its-kind, giant wheel, with riding cars the size of city buses. It was a sensation when it debuted on the Midway Plaisance, which helped become the blueprint for the modern amusement park. Every time I see the wheel at Navy Pier, I see part of the Fair’s legacy, still spinning today. This interview was edited for length and clarity. 2026
