On WFMT, a new season of Live from WFMT features performances by oboist Oliver Talukder, the winner of the Cedille Records Emerging Artist Competition; the Miró Quartet; and the popular vocal group Chanticleer.
From the President & CEO The Guide
Dear Member,
As fall arrives in Chicago, WTTW begins a new season of exceptional programming. This month, we premiere four new documentaries in our award-winning Chicago Stories series, each exploring a defining moment in our city’s history. Join us on Friday evenings to go behind the still-unsolved Tylenol murder case, trace the rise and fall of Rod Blagojevich, explore the origins of Chicago’s iconic foods, and journey back in time to the legendary Marshall Field & Company.
Also on WTTW in October, American Experience offers a revealing two-part portrait of former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. We have an interview with the film’s producer Barak Goodman on page 4. The lineup also features Brian and Maggie , which revisits the charged 1989 television conversation between Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and journalist Brian Walden. Viewers can look forward to the debut of Maigret, a detective drama adapted from Georges Simenon’s classic novels, and The Gold , the gripping true story of one of Britain’s most notorious robberies, starring Hugh Bonneville. Rounding out the month are Rick Steves’ new treks across Europe and an American Masters profile of the Academy Award–winning actor Marlee Matlin.
On WFMT, a new season of Live from WFMT features performances by Oliver Talukder, the winner of the Cedille Records Emerging Artist Competition; the Miró Quartet; and the vocal group Chanticleer. Throughout the month, Fiesta! and Introductions will highlight Hispanic Heritage Month. We’ll bring you more “best of” performances from this summer’s Ravinia Festival, including the debut concert by star guitarist Plínio Fernandes and a blazing set by the Grammy-winning Baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire. And, finally, a new season from the Los Angeles Philharmonic kicks off with an all-Brahms program.
On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, we invite you to enjoy the fall season of outstanding public media programming, made possible by your support. We hope you’ll share the benefits of membership with a friend and, if you’re not already a monthly sustainer, consider becoming one today. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

A Conversation with Barak Goodman on His New Film
KISSINGER
by DANIEL HAUTZINGER
THIS MONTH, WTTW presents a new American Experience documentary, the sweeping two-part film Kissinger. The film explores the life and career of Nobel Prize–winning diplomat Henry Kissinger, whose influence shaped events from the opening of China and the end of the Vietnam War to the secret bombing of Cambodia, the beginning of détente with the USSR, and the overthrow of a democratically elected government in Chile.
We spoke with acclaimed filmmaker Barak Goodman about his work on Kissinger.
The Guide: Why did you want to make a documentary about Kissinger?
Barak Goodman: I’m always interested in figures who hold up a mirror to who we are as Americans and as a country, but also who themselves are very murky, contradictory, gray figures. Kissinger certainly typifies that, as somebody who did great things in the world and somebody who also, it can be argued, did things that were less great. And his power, and the scope of his reach, were extraordinary.
Photo:
Henry Kissinger at his desk on January 1, 1971
He became a bit of a caricature or Rorschach test for people who either love America’s role in the world or detest it. That flattened him as a character and obscured who he really was, and that’s an opportunity for a filmmaker or biographer to bring him back into focus as a flesh and blood human being with great positive traits and also weaknesses.
The Guide: Why now?
Goodman: There were a lot of people who would talk now who wouldn’t talk before he died. But also, the world that he engineered, in which we’ve lived for decades, is now being challenged. Before we leave the world that Kissinger created, we ought to understand it and why it exists; why he and those who followed him – many of whom he trained – believed that America needs to occupy such an important role in the world.
The Guide: What made him such a towering figure?
Goodman: There has never been a foreign policy figure like him, certainly not in the last 100 years of American history. He seized the reins of American foreign policy unlike any non-elected person ever has. He and Nixon were more activist in American foreign policy in a non-World War situation than any other figures.
It wasn’t that long before Kissinger’s tenure that the United States was an isolationist country. We wanted nothing to do with the world, essentially. Kissinger had a vision of a role for the United States as a force for good, a way to check our enemies’ rapacious desire to expand, and to do it in a peaceful context. Now that’s being challenged.
The Guide: What do you think was his signature achievement?
Goodman: It's not something people appreciate as much because
it’s hard to illustrate a negative, but Kissinger kept us from a world war involving nuclear weapons. That was not a given at the time –quite the opposite. We were
democracy. You act like a dictatorship yourself. You start to behave in the way that you most decry in your enemy, and that was what they did. Some of that was more
armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons. We had this insoluble difference with the Soviet Union. And Kissinger used his skill to essentially disarm that threat. That’s what he was obsessed by, and he would say that pretty much everything that he did flowed from that original imperative, including things on the negative side of the ledger.
The Guide: As a talented diplomat, do you think he could have done better, as some people in the film suggest?
Goodman: Yeah, I do. I think it’s incontrovertible. [The end of the Vietnam War] was a failure, unquestionably. I believe that the effort to undermine the democratically elected government of [Salvador] Allende in Chile was a step too far. The problem with this worldview that they had – “us versus them,” “communism versus the United States and democracy” – is that it’s a slippery slope. You start to do the things that you’re against. You undermine
Goodman: Certainly. I would say that the danger of Realpolitik [Kissinger’s pragmatic approach to world affairs] is that you forget why you’re fighting, who you are, what you’re about. You can fall victim to your own chess-playing machinations. Kissinger had this blind loyalty or belief in the United States as a force for good in the world. Therefore, if you maximize U.S. power, you’re maximizing good. But if you do that in such a way that you’re essentially undermining the very values that you are ostensibly pursuing, then it starts to call into question the whole enterprise. I think he crossed the line, and that’s where I think the critics have a point.
The Guide: What do we lose if American Experience stops producing new programs?
“Before we leave the world that Kissinger created, we ought to understand it and why it exists; why he…believed that America needs to occupy such an important role in the world.”
BARAK GOODMAN
passive, [like] the failure to stop the massacres in East Pakistan. But that was terrible as well.
So yes, I do agree with Kissinger’s critics, but I also agree with his defenders that he did amazing things. His energy was incredible. His passion was incredible. His love of America was bottomless. He’s a mix, and that’s what makes him so interesting.
The Guide: Do you think there are lessons from Kissinger’s life and career for today?
Goodman: I’ve worked in a lot of places in this business, and this group of people care more about filmmaking and accuracy and depth and nuance than any group I’ve ever worked with. History is so important for us now. Everything has its precedent, and you can see how we navigated through them, and how we ended up maybe changed for the better in the long run. It gives you a sense of grounding and also a deep well of wisdom and knowledge. American Experience is an important source of reflection for everybody who watches it and for the whole country, for the culture. To lose that is such a shame; there are very few sources of good history around. Hopefully, it won’t be gone forever.

Introductions
With leadership from former CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery, the Young Composers Initiative engages youth from across the Chicago region and empowers them to create new pieces of chamber music. Last spring, the 2024-25 Young Composers Initiative culminated in a performance of these new works by musicians of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago at Symphony Center. Among this year’s six fellows were violinist-composer Sylvia Pine, who performed on Live from WFMT earlier this year; and violinist, composer, arranger, and conductor Clara Frantzen. As a member of Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, Frantzen has previously been featured on two Introductions episodes last summer: as a violinist and composer in July, and giving testimony about the orchestra’s breakout performance at Lollapalooza in August. Frantzen is currently in their first year studying violin performance at Boston University.

Ravinia Festival
The Ravinia audience (at capacity in the Martin Theatre) was delighted to welcome VOCES8 in their festival debut last August. Celebrating their twentieth anniversary season, the internationally acclaimed British vocal ensemble presented signature selections that have built their reputation for exquisite blend, technical precision, and heartfelt musicality. This program included all “the hits” – choice Renaissance polyphony, some American Songbook, a little jazz, and favorite contemporary works and arrangements that have become synonymous with their brand. The sunny afternoon concert concluded with an announcement from the stage that this would be the last U.S. performance of first soprano Andrea Haines, who has sung with VOCES8 for 17 years and has been integral in shaping the ensemble’s sound.

Last spring, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was one of five internationally acclaimed ensembles — and the only North American orchestra — invited to participate in the third Mahler Festival at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The ten-day festival featured all the composer’s symphonies and songs. Led by Jaap van Zweden, the CSO was selected to present the Sixth (with its famous hammer “blows of fate”) and Seventh Symphonies. According to local press accounts, audiences were eager to hear the CSO inside the Main Hall and outside in the Vondelpark where a livestream was projected to an overflow crowd. The Dutch newspaper NRC praised the performances: “Drifting woodwinds, lightning-tight percussion. The brass is a dream, so radiant and sharp, and the entire string section forms a well-oiled machine with one big hyper-concentrated sound. The CSO is a beast of an orchestra with a mighty sound and Mahler in its blood.” Enjoy the CSO’s performance of the Symphony No. 6 from a concert last May.

Listening to Singers
Andreas Scholl, one of the world’s most popular countertenors, recorded his first solo album at age 26 for Harmonia Mundi. Deutsche Barocklieder, an anthology of German Baroque song, covered much chronological and stylistic ground, and revealed a fully formed artist of remarkable versality and intelligence with the consummate ease and understanding of a singer already at the top of his game. Scholl’s mastery of intonation, coloratura passagework, language, and phrasing have been trademarks of his performances and recordings ever since. His discography now includes more 40 titles with more than 20 recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label alone. To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Deutsche Barocklieder, Harmonia Mundi has reissued six of his iconic recitals as a glorious tribute to a singer at the summit of his art. Andreas Scholl joins WFMT to retrace the high points of his career to date.

Folkstage
The Dangling Participles are a Lansing, Michigan-based band with a diverse song set ranging from indie folk and Americana to jazz and pop. The soulful vocals of the band’s core duo (guitarist Austin Kaufmann and Tamiko Rothhorn on cornet and ukulele) give the group its signature sound, rich in harmonies. The Dang Ps (as their fans call them) have been performing genre-hopping originals and covers throughout midMichigan since 2015. They pair their love for songwriting, harmonizing, and arranging with a lively on-stage experience. Marilyn Rea Beyer welcomes Austin and Tamiko to their Folkstage debut, live from St. Tim’s Coffeehouse in Evanston.
“The great joy of the society’s concerts is the interaction of up-and-coming musicians with established ones.”

Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts
Grand Prize winner of the 2025 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, the Katarina String Quartet has quickly distinguished itself as one of North America’s most compelling young ensembles. The tightly knit and community-focused ensemble currently serves as the Graduate Resident String Quartet at The Juilliard School, where they explore all chamber music from contemporary and canonized works to folk tunes. Founded in 2022 at McGill University, the quartet takes its name from luthier Katarina Guarneri, wife of violin maker Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu. Scholars believe that she worked on her husband’s violins during the most productive years of his career. Inspired by Katarina, the KSQ celebrates the countless people and communities behind the canonized figureheads of classical music. For their Dame Myra Hess debut, the quartet presents Kevin Puts’s Credo and Hadyn’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 50/2.
