On WFMT, Ken Burns and Sarah Botstein discuss the importance of music in their new film, The American Revolution, and Live from WFMT welcomes guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas in advance of his solo appearance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

From the President & CEO

Dear Member,

This month, we bring you the new epic film from Ken Burns, The American Revolution. Over six consecutive nights, watch the story of how thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose i n rebellion, won their independence, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe. On page 4, read our interview with Burns and his co-producer/director Sarah Botstein, and explore our companion website at wttw.com/americanrevolution for additional content. And during the week leading up to the premiere on November 16, watch and listen to interviews with Burns and Botstein on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight and on WFMT.

This month, we mark Veterans Day with new programs including Salute to Service 2025: A Veterans Day Celebration, a tribute concert hosted by country music icon Trace Adkins and the U.S. Army Field Band with Chicago native Kurt Elling; and American Heart in WWI: A Carnegie Hall Tribute, a special that combines storytelling and music to shine a spotlight on America’s involvement in World War I. And WTTW will commemorate Native American Heritage Month with a new special, K’etniyi: The Land Is Speaking to Us, that explores cultural interconnection in Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park; and Uncovering Boarding Schools: Stories of Resistance and Resilience, a new film that traces the history of Indigenous children forced into government-sanctioned boarding schools.

On WFMT, Live from WFMT welcomes guitarist Pablo Sainz Villegas in advance of his solo appearance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Listening to Singers features an interview with the vibrant Trinidadian soprano Jeanine De Bique prior to her NEIU Jewel Box recital and performances with the CSO in Mozart’s Requiem ; and Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts shines a spotlight on young cellist Jan Vargas Nedvetsky (a frequent guest on WFMT’s Introductions) with pianist Liang Yu Wang.

In this season of Thanksgiving, all of us at WTTW and WFMT are grateful for the generous support of our members and sustainers. Thank you, and best wishes for a happy and healthy upcoming holiday season.

Sincerely,

The Guide

The American REVOLUTION

News Interview with

KEN BURNS and SARAH BOTSTEIN A WTTW

he American Revolution, a new six-part documentary series premiering this month from Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and David Schmidt, tells the extraordinary story of the birth of the United States. More than nine years in the making, this film

tells the tale of the country’s founding struggle. WTTW News/Chicago Tonight anchor Brandis Friedman sat down with filmmakers Ken Burns and Sarah Botstein in WTTW’s studios to talk about the production, and why this film is especially relevant now. Watch the entire

interview on Chicago Tonight on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 pm.

Brandis Friedman: The American Revolution begins with a reminder that the America that we now know was not the first nation here. There was a different

Ken Burns and Sarah Botstein join Brandis Friedman on the set of Chicago Tonight

confederation of states – not so much the colonies that we know that became the United States, but specifically Native American nations that long predated the Revolutionary War. How important was it to begin with that context?

Ken Burns: Well, I think that what we’re taught in grammar school is that the American Revolution is about taxes and representation. And that’s true, but it’s also about Native American land. At the beginning of the film, we needed to illustrate that the Revolution is a world war, a civil war, and a war essentially over the prize of North America. And what is the prize? This land that is already occupied by 13 British colonies, superimposed over the land of Native nations. And to the west are many more Native nations that are extraordinarily complicated groups as different from one another as, say, France is from Belgium. This film is about moving into this new space and claiming it for our own.

Friedman: We hear from one expert who says that part of Revolutionary War history has been sanitized. What are we misunderstanding or forgetting about the Revolution?

Sarah Botstein: We forget that the American Revolution is at least two things happening at the same time. One is this huge revolution of ideas, and how a government might be structured, who might lead it, and who may be responsible for selecting that person. And the other is a terribly brutal, extremely complicated 18th century war. An 18th century war is awful, bloody, scary, violent, and dark. And in order to really understand our founding story, I think you have to braid the two together.

Friedman: Ken, you’ve talked about democracy being sort of an unintended consequence of the Revolution. What did you mean by that?

in the United States. So things are beginning to change and morph, and the American Revolution is leading that change. The people who fought and died and won this war were so-called ordinary people, and they deserved something. So you can say that democracy is not an object of the American Revolution. It’s a consequence of it, and there’s a big difference there. We are all the beneficiaries of that big difference.

Friedman: How do you think this series is different from any other documentary you’ve done?

Burns: Well, it goes back to the violence. If you have photographs and newsreels, the violence is proven. But if you’ve got a painting and somebody’s got a bayonet, to tell the real story of the Revolution, you have to forget the distance and time. And a lot of it is doing reenactments and asking the finest actors in the world to read off camera. They helped bring alive not just the familiar top-down folks, but dozens of other people that viewers have never heard of. By having all of these different voices, you give viewers a sense of what really took place, and can make it arguably the most complex and interesting story we’ve ever tried to tell.

Friedman: Tell me about the importance of the Native American nations, as well as Black people, African Americans, be they free or enslaved, for both sides of this war.

“I believe this is the most important e vent in world history since the birth of Christ.” ken burns

Burns: First of all, there’s a quarrel between Englishmen that gets broken out into natural rights. It’s the Enlightenment, and human beings deserve natural rights, so Thomas Jefferson reacts by saying that all men are created equal, while he owns other human beings. Now human beings are going to have to be equal, even though it takes decades for that to happen

Botstein: I think that you can’t tell a story of America without widening the lens to see who is actually living here, who was fighting the war, and who was going to be impacted by it. The Native American populations were vast and different, as were the free and enslaved Black people; they made all kinds of rational decisions including the choice to side with the British. It was very reasonable to say, “What this have to do with me?” and get out of the way, as we see even today.

Friedman: Speaking of today, because we are living through bitter political division, was there any period of that deep division that you feel still resonates now?

Burns: Well, of course the period we’re covering, the American Revolution, does represent deep

division. But here’s the central thing: When a person is in a struggle, having great difficulty, they go to a professional who asks essential questions such as where are you from? Tell me your story. Tell me about your parents. How did you get to where you are right now? Because that’s the way we’re going to unravel what's currently going on. So if find yourself in a time of great division and internal turmoil for an entire country, you go back to your origin story and find out where you began. There’s always been division, but you might find the path back to how you solve that.

I believe this is the most important event in world history since the birth of Christ. Everybody was a subject up until then – and all of a sudden, people were citizens with the great responsibility that entails. That’s about as inspiring a story as I know. If we learn our origin story, it can help us get through this and begin to move on to the next great phase, which is repair. Ultimately, we’re hoping that if anything, this story will help put the us back in the U.S.

The American Revolution premieres on Sunday, November 16 and runs for six consecutive nights through Friday, November 21 f rom 7:00 to 9:00 pm on WTTW, the PBS app, and wttw.com. Visit WTTW’s companion website at wttw.com/americanrevolution.

Dora Pejačević

Collectors’ Corner

Henry Fogel presents a program on Dora Pejačević (1885–1923), a pioneering Croatian composer and one of the first women of her background to write symphonic music. Born into nobility during a time when the aristocracy was in obsolescence, she received an extensive musical education in Zagreb, Dresden, and Munich, and became acquainted with leading artists and intellectuals of her time, including Rainer Maria Rilke. Deeply rooted in late Romanticism, Pejačević composed more than 50 works across various genres, including orchestral, chamber, piano, and vocal music. Her Symphony in F-sharp minor is one of the earliest symphonies written by a Croatian composer. Tragically, Pejačević died at age 38 following the birth of her son, cutting short a promising career and robbing Croatian music of a trailblazing creative voice.

Undoubtedly the most virtuoso guitarist of his generation, Pablo Sáinz-Villegas has been acclaimed by the international press as the successor to Andrés Segovia and an ambassador of Spanish culture in the world. He is the first solo guitarist to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York since Maestro Andrés Segovia did so in 1983, the first guitarist to play with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2001, and the first guitarist to perform with the Berlin Philharmonic at the New Year’s Eve Gala since 1983. Sainz-Villegas returns to the CSO November 6-8 to perform Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez under Riccardo Muti. Zachary Stevenson, Shaun Whitley, and Kieran McCabe are The Oh Boys, a retro pop, rock, and folk trio. Formed in 2018 to reproduce the music and magic of Buddy Holly and the Crickets in a Chicago production of Buddy: the Buddy Holly Story, they honed their sound through almost 100 sell-out performances, winning 5 Chicago Theatre Awards including Best Musical, Best Ensemble, and Best Lead Performance. The three singer/songwriters kept the band together to move seamlessly between old-school pop and folk music scenes. With a classic Crickets song as namesake, they call their sound “modern music for vinyl hearts.” Their vintage-inspired writing melds pop, rock, folk, and doo-wop in original songs that feature tight harmonies, inventive arrangements, and poignant lyrics. Their sets are also fueled by respect for the fiery 1960s protest singer Phil Ochs. Veterans of musical theatre, their concerts engage audiences with humor, spontaneity, and melodic storytelling. The Oh Boys make their Folkstage debut live from St. Tim’s Coffeehouse in Skokie.

Baroque&Before

La Néréide was created in 2019 to showcase repertoire for equal voices by sopranos, Julie Roset, Camille Allérat and Ana Vieira Leite. The trio connected while studying at the conservatory in Geneva and chose the name La Néréide as a reference to the mythical water sirens, les Néréides, keeping the singular form to represent their unity as an ensemble. Last summer at Bruges’s Musiqua Antiqua Festival, La Néréide presented Il Concerto Segreto, an all-Italian program including works by the resident composer in 16th century court of Ferrara, Luzzasco Luzzaschi, alongside music by Francesca Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, and Luca Marenzio recreating the original conditions in which the works would have been performed. Their performances of Il Concerto Segreto have been praised for “very beautiful voices, which fit together perfectly” (Diapason) and “vocal art at the highest level.” (SWR2)
