From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

This month, we premiere Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, a long-awaited sequel to the acclaimed series tracing the precarious relationship between King Henry VIII, played by Damian Lewis, and his chief minister Thomas Cromwell, portrayed by Oscar winner Mark Rylance. The new series is adapted from the final novel in Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy, and on page 4, Lewis, Rylance, and actor Kate Phillips (who plays Jane Seymour and most recently, the title role in Miss Scarlet) share their thoughts about the story so far and insights about their characters. WTTW Passport members can watch all six episodes of season one of Wolf Hall now.

WTTW will celebrate Women’s History Month throughout March with Jacqueline du Pré: Genius and Tragedy, the story of one of the greatest cellists of all time narrated by Yo-Yo Ma; Women of World War II: The Untold Stories, about the American women who fought on the warfront and the home front; and Shaking it Up: The Life & Times of Liz Carpenter, the inspirational story of the groundbreaking journalist and press secretary for Lady Bird Johnson who helped shape some of the most vivid moments and movements of the 20th century.

WFMT will also mark the month with a vibrant live performance by singersongwriter and violin phenom Anne Harris, who brings her trio to WFMT’s Fay and Daniel Levin Performance Studio for Folkstage ; an interview with soprano Joélle Harvey in advance of her appearance in Haydn’s Mass in the Time of War with the Chicago Symphony; and Barbara Hannigan’s debut as guest conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra as she leads works by Haydn, Ligeti, and Strauss.

On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, thank you for your support that makes everything possible.

Sincerely,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

A with Q&A Wolf Hall’s DAMIAN LEWIS, MARK RYLANCE, & KATE PHILLIPS

When Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light begins, Thomas Cromwell is nearing the peak of his powers as a servant of King Henry VIII. But Henry is a capricious master, and Cromwell has plenty of enemies. The Mirror and the Light , which tracks Cromwell’s downfall, is an adaptation of the final novel in Hilary Mantel’s award-winning Cromwell trilogy, following Wolf Hall , which covered the first two books.

Watch Sundays beginning March 23 at 8:00 pm on WTTW, wttw.com, and the PBS app and enjoy this chat with actors Mark Rylance, who stars as Cromwell; Damian Lewis (King Henry VIII); and Kate Phillips (Jane Seymour), who also stars in Miss Scarlet

Where did we leave Cromwell at the end of the first series?

Mark Rylance: We left Cromwell right after the execution of Anne Boleyn. She was someone whom he really liked because she was intelligent and cultured, so I think it was quite tragic for him. This series begins right at the same moment, with a different perspective of the

execution. Cromwell is a guard dog and becomes increasingly required to be a brutal gatekeeper for his master, but he never really loses his compassion and empathy for other human beings.

Who are Cromwell’s enemies?

Rylance: His primary enemies are the old families – the Courtenays and the Poles are not friends of Cromwell, primarily because they see the Tudor dynasty as a blip in the much longer dynasties of their families. They don’t like the idea of a common man rising up and replacing many posts in the governance of England with people of merit rather than people of aristocracy. Cromwell is increasingly on his own.

What is Cromwell’s relationship with Henry like?

Rylance: It’s nice to be playing with Damian Lewis again, and his subtle and mysterious portrayal of Henry VIII. He’s deeply sensitive and incredibly powerful, so there’s that appeal of working for someone who has the power to effect enormous good, and if you catch him in the right mood, then great things can happen. It’s a remarkable thing that he has advanced a person like Cromwell because of his merit and ability. Cromwell was a very early activist in trying to get English translations of the Bible into the hands of every man and woman. This sounds natural now, but it was a very dangerous thing at the time, for which people were being burnt left, right, and center. Cromwell is walking the line, very close to that being his fate. I don’t know how you would prepare yourself for that.

Does Cromwell see his downfall coming?

Rylance: I think that’s a good question for the audience to consider; it’s one of the delights you’ll have watching the show. I think he gets tired

MARK RYLANCE AS THOMAS CROMWELL AND DAMIAN LEWIS AS KING HENRY VIII

and there are times when he fantasizes about a different life. He’s always aware that something bad could happen. You are reaping great benefits, great wealth, but you are dealing with people who are trying to put a knife in your back. You’re dealing with an extremely violent regime that is sustained by that. And you are an agent of that regime.

What are Henry’s concerns about his position?

Damian Lewis: I think what is probably true of Henry is that there was a deep insecurity in him underneath the magnificence. He believed he possessed this magnificence. He believed he was next to God on Earth. But I think deep down there was an insecurity about him not being able to provide male heirs and his children not surviving. In Tudor times, they believed strongly that if you had many extramarital affairs, you were less likely to have healthy children within marriage. It was a new dynasty. The Tudors, Henry VIII, had a thin claim to the throne.

Tell us about Cromwell and Henry’s relationship.

Lewis: Henry enjoys Cromwell’s honesty, his truth, and his ability to get things done. So, he doesn’t have to think too hard about them himself. Henry was many things – he

loved his pastimes and his pursuits, he spent a long time trying to create this idea of an Arthurian romantic court where people wrote poetry and played music and learnt languages, and where romantic love and the chivalric code were terribly important. This meant that there wasn’t always a lot of time to run the country, so he had Cromwell.

Tell us about Jane Seymour.

Kate Phillips: Jane is the third wife of Henry VIII. She was believed to be one of the lowest born of all of the queens, but she’s been a lady in waiting to Katherine of Aragon, and later to Anne Boleyn, so she’s been at Court for some time. Jane’s relationship with the King is, I believe, at the beginning, something of real hope and happiness for him. It’s with Jane that he sees this new future. She’s seen as very chaste, really plain, and I think Henry finds that deeply attractive. And whether or not Jane herself has found a love match…I think that’s definitely called into question over the course of the series. What Hilary Mantel did so beautifully in the book, and what I think has been translated so brilliantly in the screenplay, is the unpicking of the stereotype of Jane, the stereotype of having no agency. You see these moments when she’s sharp and witty, and I think those flashes of brilliant intelligence are really exciting.

"What is probably true of Henry is that there was a deep insecurity in him underneath the magnificence."
DAMIAN LEWIS

What is Jane’s relationship with Cromwell?

Phillips: I think they’re in love with each other. That’s the story that we have been discussing – you see a glimpse of it in Wolf Hall , and it’s definitely present in this series. He’s one of the very few people in her life that she can rely on, in whom she trusts and confides. It’s a really important relationship in her life. I think there’s a huge amount of underlying pain that exists in lots of the scenes where I think they would, if they could, have been together – but the King gets in the way.

In the Spotlight

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Last November, Riccardo Muti wrapped up his autumn residency with theatrical flair. The program centered the world premiere of the Megalopolis Suite by former composer-in-residence Osvaldo Golijov’s based on his score for Francis Ford Coppola’s 2024 film. The extravagantly orchestrated 20-minute suite was well received by the audience which included Coppola himself, a distant cousin of Muti, as the conductor announced. The overture to Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and the “Four Seasons” ballet from Verdi’s I vespri scilliani – Muti in his most familiar and expert territory –opened the program, while two Spanish favorites, Chabrier’s España and Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat, bookended a crowd-pleasing evening at Orchestra Hall.

Listening to Singers

Joélle Harvey has built a reputation as one of the finest singers of her generation, performing major roles on the world’s greatest opera stages. Since the birth of her daughter, now 9 years old, Harvey has prioritized concert work over opera, allowing her more time for her preferred job as a mother. Chicago audiences have already been treated to her solo recital for Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago, various appearances with Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Carmina Burana, Messiah), and Haydn’s The Creation with Music of the Baroque, described as “a consistent pleasure” by Chicago Classical Review. Harvey joins WFMT to discuss her choice to limit operatic engagements and to share performances of art song, oratorio, and yes, opera, in advance of her return to CSO as soloist in Haydn’s Mass in Time of War.

In the Spotlight

Metropolitan Opera

Beethoven’s Leonore is a signature role for the young dramatic soprano Lise Davidsen. In January, Davidsen announced that she will be withdrawing from her scheduled performances after the March run of Fidelio at the Met, which includes the Saturday afternoon radio and HD cinema broadcast. “I’m cancelling for a happy reason: I’m expecting twins. I’m very excited about their arrival, and my new life with them,” said Davidsen. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the leaders of the opera houses I was due to sing at, and my colleagues whom I was due to be performing with: thank you for your kind words, understanding and support … I appreciate [my fans and followers] more than words can say, and I thank you in advance for your patience as you wait for me to return.” Davidsen is planning to resume her barnstorming career at the beginning of 2026.

In the Spotlight

The Cleveland Orchestra

Barbara Hannigan, a bold and uncompromising artist, made her debut as guest conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra in repertoire of widely contrasting eras and styles –a signature of her programs. The concert began in the 18th century with Haydn’s “Mourning” Symphony No. 44 in E minor. Next followed Lonely Child (1980) by French composer Claude Vivier, featuring the “utterly mesmerizing” soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou (The Guardian). Hannigan and the Cleveland Orchestra then paid tribute to the recent centenary of György Ligeti with his eerie and captivating Lontano, a prime example of the densely overlapping lines and tone clusters of what he called micropolyphony. The program concluded with Death and Transfiguration, a meditation on the great beyond composed by a 25-year-old Richard Strauss.

In the Spotlight

Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin

Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) was a renowned conductor known for creating over 200 orchestral transcriptions, many of which are still performed and re-recorded today. His works are colorful and varied, spanning a wide range from the organ pieces of Johann Sebastian Bach to the operas of Richard Wagner. Stokowski played a pivotal role in the early development of orchestral recordings, collaborating with Bell Labs and the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1940, he partnered with Walt Disney and the beloved character Mickey Mouse to produce the groundbreaking film, Fantasia. Stokowski’s managers were focused on every penny he could potentially earn for them, which is why they kept him under contract just in case he lived to be 105 years old.
