This month, WTTW viewers will bid a fond farewell to a wildly popular British mystery series that is concluding after 11 seasons: Grantchester. The British detective series has been headlined by three very different vicars pairing up with law enforcement to investigate far more murders than really ought to be occurring in a quaint English village. On page 4, series stars Rishi Nair and Robson Green bring us up to date on where their characters are as the season begins, aspects of the production that they found most meaningful, and their feelings about their long-running show coming to an end.
For Pride Month, don’t miss the new Independent Lens film Assembly, which follows artist Rashaad Newsome as he prepares to showcase “Assembly,” a groundbreaking exhibit at New York’s Park Avenue Armory that blends visual art, performance, and artificial intelligence to unite a fractured community. We’ll also premiere Armadillo Man: The Trips of Jim Franklin , a profile of the legendary concert poster artist who helped establish the iconic Austin music venue Armadillo World Headquarters.

This year, we bring you 11 performances beginning with the season opener: the Festival’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero leading the Grant Park Orchestra in Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and other American music in celebration of America’s 250th birthday. Other Grant Park concerts this month on WFMT feature soloist Stewart Goodyear performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and actors from Lookingglass Theatre who will bring to life the multimedia work Ellis Island: The Dream of America.

A Farewell to Grantchester
The popular British mystery series Grantchester, based on a collection of short stories by James Runcie, has been a welcome addition to Sunday evenings since the very first episode premiered on WTTW in January 2015. This cozy detective drama is set in the charming Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester in the 1950s and ’60s, where residents encounter more than their fair share of mysterious murders.
Throughout the course of the show’s 10 seasons so far, Robson Green has portrayed Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, who
has tracked down criminals with three very different vicars – Sidney Chambers, played by James Norton; Will Davenport, portrayed by Tom Brittney; and his current partner in crime (solving), Alphy Kottaram, played by Rishi Nair.
This month, as viewers prepare to welcome the 11th and final season of Grantchester, actors Rishi Nair (Alphy) and Robson Green (Geordie) share some thoughts about what their characters are thinking as the season begins, what aspects of the production they have found most meaningful as they have worked on the show, and how they feel about it coming to a close.

We’ve created so many gorgeous relationships, so many friendships that will endure.
Q: Where are we with Geordie? Because obviously he’s contemplating some of t he greater things in life now, isn’t he?
Robson Green: Yeah, Geordie is definitely contemplating greater things in life. Is he going to continue doing the job that he loves? The only thing that he feels he’s good at? And if he does stop doing that, what is he going to do? He’s offered a promotion, which is absolutely shocking because as we all know, Geordie’s never solved a crime in the entire 11 seasons of Grantchester !
Green: I’ve been an actor for 41 years, and it’s taken me all over the world. And when I was growing up, my grandmother always said, “There’s a lot of lovely folk in the world, and you have to try and meet as many of them as you can.”
And in filming Grantchester, that’s what I’ve been doing –meeting beautiful people who are great at their jobs, but who also just enjoy and love what they’re doing. That’s a gorgeous thing to be part of.
Nothing like this will end because we’ve created so many gorgeous relationships, so many friendships that will endure until I leave this world. That’s the great thing about this job.
Q: Rishi, how do you feel about the arc that you’ve had over the three seasons for Alphy?
Q: Rishi, tell us about season 11 and what’s going on in Alphy’s life.
Rishi Nair: Well, we left him at the end of season 10 knocking on his mother’s door. He obviously found the letter and her address. Then we pick up [that story] in season 11. Time has passed, and he’s met up with his mother a few times. Things are going really well and he’s very hopeful. He’s incredibly happy to have his mother in his life. And then the situation kind of goes a bit pear-shaped and it doesn’t quite work out as he wants. He loses a lot in this season, and as a result, Alphy is probably at the lowest we’ve ever seen him. So, we watch how he builds himself up again from that. And actually, I think that he goes on an extremely interesting journey
Q: What about the relationship with Alphy and G eordie – how does what’s going on with Alphy ripple into that relationship?
Nair: I mean, Alphy and Geordie’s relationship is central to the story. They are always there for each other. It’s a lovely relationship between two men who are really best friends. And that relationship is tested this season. We see Alphy going through a lot with his mother, with his faith, and with his relationship with Meg. Everything is kind of on the rocks. And like everyone in our lives, when things are going wrong, the people who bear the brunt of it are the people you love the most – the ones who are closest to you.
Q: Robson, what has it meant to you to play Geordie for 11 seasons?
Alphy’s such a cool character and such a cool guy –much cooler than I am. I’ll definitely miss playing him.
RISHI NAIR
And hand on heart, I’ve done more than a thousand hours of television, be it documentaries, be it drama, be it films for television. This is like nothing else. It’s just been the most joyous experience of my life. And it hasn’t come to an end.
Nair : I can’t quite believe that I’ve done three seasons. It feels like only yesterday that I came and joined the show as the newbie. It’s gone so quickly, but it’s been one of the best experiences of my life. It’s been the best job of my life. So it’s really sad that it’s coming to an end because of all the people who work on this show – not just the cast, who are phenomenal, but all the crew, all the people that you come in and meet every day in the mornings, that you spend time with, that you get to know. You build these relationships, then you have a c ouple of months apart, and then you come back again the next year and do it all over again.
Each season is on its own kind of journey and throughout the three seasons as a whole, it’s been a beautiful journey to play. And Alphy’s such a cool character and such a cool guy – much cooler than I am. So, I’ll definitely miss playing him.

After previews of opera festivals in Des Moines, St. Louis, and Santa Fe, host Oliver Camacho turns his attention to upcoming opera performances in Chicago this summer. On June 6, Sir Emanuele Andrizzi joins WFMT to share favorite recordings of Puccini’s La bohème and Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, the two operas being presented by Opera Festival of Chicago this month. On the 13th, harpsichordist and conductor Jory Vinikour offers his insight on French opera of the High Baroque era in advance of Haymarket Opera’s presentation of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s David et Jonathas (1688)— a Chicago premiere. Finally, on June 27, the esteemed conductor James Conlon recounts the history of concert opera at Ravinia Festival where he served as Music Director from 2005 through 2015. San Francisco Symphony
Gabriela Montero has built an international reputation not only as a formidable pianist, but also as one of today’s most astonishing classical improvisers. Her Piano Concerto No. 1, “Latin,” composed in 2016, blends the dynamic rhythms of mambo, salsa, and Venezuelan folk music with darker emotional undercurrents inspired by the political instability of her native Venezuela. Montero has described the work as a chiaroscuro portrait of Latin America, balancing sensuality and exuberance against anxiety and tragedy. Marin Alsop made her debut leading the San Francisco Symphony with this program themed “Music of the Americas” anchored by Montero as soloist in her concerto and Samuel Barber’s Symphony No. 1. A curtain-raiser by Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz and fanfares by Aaron Copland and Joan Tower round out this program which was praised by critics for Alsop’s energetic leadership and Montero’s technical and improvisatory brilliance.

Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival
Already recognized with the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2015 and the Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists in 2017, Paul Huang’s star was on the rise when he made his Grant Park Music Festival debut as soloist in Barber’s Violin Concerto in 2018. This occasion gave WFMT a chance to invite the Taiwanese American violinist to perform with pianist Marta Aznavoorian live from the Levin Performance Studio. He has since returned twice to give recitals with pianist Helen Huang on Live from WFMT. Paul Huang’s performance last summer as soloist in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with Grant Park Orchestra was hailed by Chicago Classical Review as “a solo highlight, not just of the summer but of the year.” On June 2, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival features Paul Huang in collaboration with pianist Wu Han and cellist Clive Greensmith in Saint-Saëns’s Trio No. 1; and on June 13 he performs Mozart’s Violin Sonata No. 24 in F Major with pianist Orion Weiss.

Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts
Best known for his work as a flutist, Adam W. Sadberry is a multifaceted artist: flutist, singer, educator, activist, improviser, music director, writer, and podcaster. He has gained a reputation as one of the most compelling young voices in classical music, recognized for a strong commitment to social engagement and cultural storytelling. Named to The Washington Post’s “23 for ’23” list of rising cultural figures, Sadberry’s performances blend technical brilliance with emotional immediacy, while advocating for underrepresented composers. His repertoire frequently highlights contemporary American music, particularly works by Black composers and living artists. Collaborating with pianist Nathan Cheung, Sadberry returns to the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert series with a program that reflects his affinity for contemporary works and global musical voices. The recital features Amazonia (2015) by composer-flutist Valerie Coleman and the Flute Sonata by Japanese composer Yuko Uebayashi written in 2003.

Goodyear’s performances of Prokofiev concertos are praised for their combination of athletic brilliance, clarity of articulation, and lyrical sensitivity. In 2024, Goodyear lost his mother which caused him to withdraw from various engagements including his last scheduled appearance with the Grant Park Orchestra (Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto, replaced by Terrence Wilson). He returned to the studio later that year to record an all-Prokofiev album, characterized by the pianist as being a highly personal project. Goodyear returns to the Grant Park Music Festival as soloist in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, one of the composer’s most beloved and technically demanding works. WFMT Opera Series
Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Molinari has followed an unusually distinctive path to the operatic stage. Before committing fully to music, Molinari completed medical studies at the University of Padua, earning a doctorate in medicine while simultaneously pursuing advanced musical training in flute and voice. Her eventual decision to leave medicine for opera has coincided with a rapid international rise, particularly in bel canto, Mozart, and Baroque repertoire. Recent seasons have marked major milestones in Molinari’s career. Earlier this season, she made her American debut at Lyric Opera of Chicago as Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. That production reunited her with soprano Jacquelyn Stucker, her co-star in Handel’s Ariodante at Opéra national de Paris. Her stylish interpretation of the opera’s title role was hailed by OperaWire as “a show-stopping performance,” and garnered her the “Best Singer” award from the National Association of Music Critics in Italy (Premio Abbiati).
