This month, as the United States reaches its milestone 250th anniversary, WTTW brings you a wide-ranging collection of programming that celebrates our country’s rich history, treasured artifacts, art and performances, and individual achievements that define what it is to be an American. In July, we’ll broadcast two thoughtprovoking documentaries from our Firsthand: Democracy streaming series; a star-spangled Independence Day celebration from Williamsburg, Virginia; a new feature-length documentary, Becoming American: Philadelphia’s Story, exploring the founding of the United States through the lens of Philadelphia, America’s first capital; and a rebroadcast of the six-part film from Ken Burns, The American Revolution, chronicling the political clash between colonists and the British government that forever changed the world. See page 4 for highlights and wttw.com for the complete list.
Also in July on WTTW, enjoy new seasons of Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators and My Life is Murder, plus a new comedy-drama series based in New Zealand: Under the Vines. In addition, a landmark new four-part miniseries, Once Upon a Time in Space, takes you on a fascinating journey from the early days of the space shuttle to the International Space Station through America’s recent return to the moon.
On WFMT, experience the sounds emanating from the Grant Park Music Festival. Performances this month include the annual Independence Day Salute conducted by Christopher Bell; Ravel’s Piano Concerto featuring Festival favorite Michelle Cann; Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by soloist Olga Kern and led by Conductor Laureate Carlos Kalmar; the Chicago premiere of Christopher Theofanidis’s Drum Circle with Third Coast Percussion; and to round out the month, Gershwin’s An American in Paris live from Harris Theater. Also join us live at Ravinia Festival as Marin Alsop conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, featuring Gramophone ’s Young Artist and Instrumentalist of the Year for 2025, María Dueñas, making her CSO and Ravinia debut.

WFMT mourns the passing of Michael Tilson Thomas, Music Director Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, Conductor Laureate of the London Symphony Orchestra, and Co-Founder, Artistic Director Laureate of the New World Symphony, Distinguished Professor of Music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and twelve-time Grammy Award winner. In 1985, Tilson Thomas joined Studs to discuss his interest in the American composers George Gershwin, Charles Ives, and Carl Ruggles, all of whom he knew personally. A year later, he returned to WFMT with his father Ted Thomas, who worked broadly in Hollywood and on Broadway. They shared stories of MTT’s grandparents Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky, pioneering stars of turn of the century Yiddish Theater.

San Francisco Symphony
In June 2025, Esa-Pekka Salonen concluded his tenure as music director of the San Francisco Symphony with performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 — an emotional farewell hailed by critics as both “staggering” (Los Angeles Times) and deeply moving. Salonen’s interpretation balanced ferocity with transcendence, capturing the symphony’s existential sweep and ultimate vision of renewal. Mezzosoprano Sasha Cooke leant her decadent tone to an expressive reading of the fourth movement “Urlicht,” with the luminous soprano Heidi Stober and the SFS Chorus joining in for the symphony’s rapturous final movement. The reviewer for Seen and Heard International reported that the audience at Davies Symphony Hall “listened with breathless rapture and rewarded the performance with one of the longest ovations I can recall in my five decades in San Francisco.”

Grant Park Music Festival
Celebrated as a champion of the music of Florence Price, pianist Michelle Cann’s most recent local performance was her solo recital The Women of Chicago’s Black Renaissance for UChicago Presents. She made her Grant Park Music Festival debut in 2022 playing Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement under Carlos Kalmar, then returned for the Independence Day Concert in 2023 to perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with Christopher Bell leading the Grant Park Orchestra — a concert that was severely hindered by heavy rain. Fortunately, Cann got another chance to showcase Rhapsody in Blue in her debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop at Ravinia in 2024 (encore broadcast on WFMT on July 12). Cann has become a sought-after interpreter of Maurice Ravel’s jazzinfused Piano Concerto in G major, the vehicle for her return to Grant Park in a program conducted by Jeri Lynne Johnson which includes William Grant Still’s Festive Overture and Florence Price’s Symphony No. 3. Later this month, the Festival will present Michelle Cann and soprano Karen Slack for a CenterStage recital of works by Florence Price.

SingeSinger/songwriter Leticia “Tish” Hinojosa was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Mexican immigrant parents, the youngest of thirteen. The prolific Hinojosa has released 16 albums in both English and Spanish and performs a duet on Susan Werner’s recent Halfway to Houston. She bridges Tejano, folk, country, and border music with poignant writing and her rootsy, warm signature sound. Americana Highways likens her voice to classic country singers and says her tone is “vaguely retro…a purely countrytraditional & Latino ferment rather than the current pop-country mix.” Cultural diversity recurs in her work as well as her personal life. She actively supports causes of bilingual education, children’s welfare, immigration rights, and farmworkers’ rights. In advance of her set at the 41st Annual Woodstock Folk Festival on Sunday July 19, Tish Hinojosa performs live from the Levin Performance Studio.

Gramophone’s Young Artist and Instrumentalist of the Year for 2025, María Dueñas makes her Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut joining Marin Alsop for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. In only a few seasons, Dueñas has taken the classical music world by storm, rapidly rising to international prominence after winning first prize at the 2021 Yehudi Menuhin Competition. Critics continually laud her luminous, goldentoned interpretations. The New York Times praises her ability to breathe “new life into well-known pieces,” proclaiming her to be a “violinist who has something to say, and the skill to say it brilliantly.” The all-Beethoven program includes the audiencefavorite “Pastoral” Symphony No. 6, where storm music swirls and brightly passes with Midwestern energy and grace. Together, Dueñas and Alsop illuminate two sides of Beethoven— virtuosic brilliance and symphonic serenity—in a live broadcast from Ravinia’s new Hunter Pavilion.

Glyndebourne Festival’s 2025 production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro was met with widespread critical acclaim for its periodaccurate charm and stellar vocal performances. The young, talented cast received glowing reviews. In particular, soprano Louise Alder and baritone Huw Montague Rendall, as the noble Almaviva couple, were highly commended for their compelling chemistry and portrayals. “[Rendall] gave us an Almaviva who swung from cold hauteur to seething bestiality in a heartbeat; a rampaging aristocrat never told no or spanked by nanny, unused to defiance,” said the review in Bachtrack. “By contrast, Louise Alder’s Rosina was a study in still melancholy. Her soprano was totally secure at the top and showed delicate phrasing. Her ‘Dove sono’ was one of the finest I’ve heard: both sophisticated and yet achingly simple.” The acclaim continued for the production’s transfer to the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall with an audience of almost 6,000 — the performance presented here on the WFMT Opera Series.
