From the President & CEO Dear Member, Happy New Year! As we look ahead to 2026, we also take time to reflect on the past year. Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to WTTW and WFMT. We share the belief that high-quality programming, supported by our local community, is essential to Chicago. The beginning of a new year is a natural time for reflection – an opportunity to look back at our past and consider how it informs our future. With that in mind, this month we bring you a new season of Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who explores our ancestry to reveal the connections that bind us all. This season, we’ll learn the origin stories of actors Kristin Chenoweth and America Ferrera, musical performers Lizzo and Rhiannon Giddens, comedian Hasan Minhaj, and others. Read more about the guests on page 4. In January, we’ll also present new seasons of viewer favorites All Creatures Great and Small, Antiques Roadshow, Miss Scarlet, Death in Paradise, and Sister Boniface Mysteries. We’ll premiere three new mystery series: Bookish, created by and starring Mark Gatiss, whom you may remember from Moonflower Murders, Sherlock, and Wolf Hall; Inspector George Gently, set in 1960s Britain; and Murder in the Mountains, which takes viewers to a scenic town in Austria where, as so often happens, baffling crimes abound. Your WTTW Passport membership will come in handy this month! On WFMT, we kick off 2026 with an annual tradition: the live New Year’s Concert featuring the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted this year for the first time by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. WTTW viewers can watch the program that evening at 7:00 pm. In keeping with our global theme, WFMT will also bring you performances by the Berlin Philharmonic and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra; Metropolitan Opera productions of Bizet’s Carmen, set in Seville, Spain, and Richard Strauss’s Arabella, which takes place in Vienna; and artists from around the world on Live from WFMT and The Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts. These include four pianists: Canadian Winston Choi, Boris Giltburg from Israel, Polish native Kacper Zaromski, and Chinese-American musician Stephanie Tang. Finally, bringing it back to the United States, WFMT will welcome the international opera star Joyce DiDonato – the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2025-26 Artist-in-Residence – for an interview on Listening to Singers. Guests are led from one discovery to the next – from plantation records and immigration documents to census rolls and DNA matches – revealing ancestors who crossed oceans, survived enslavement, concealed identities, or rebuilt lives after upheaval. The geographic scope is broad: coastal West Africa, rural Texas, northern India, Cherokee Nation lands, villages in the Philippines, and Revolutionary War encampments such as Valley Forge all appear as points of origin or return.
