From the President & CEO Dear Member, Happy New Year! As we look ahead to 2026, we also take time to reflect on the past year.

Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to WTTW and WFMT. We share the belief that high-quality programming, supported by our local community, is essential to Chicago.

The beginning of a new year is a natural time for reflection – an opportunity to look back at our past and consider how it informs our future. With that in mind, this month we bring you a new season of Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who explores our ancestry to reveal the connections that bind us all. This season, we’ll learn the origin stories of actors Kristin Chenoweth and America Ferrera, musical performers Lizzo and Rhiannon Giddens, comedian Hasan Minhaj, and others. Read more about the guests on page 4.

In January, we’ll also present new seasons of viewer favorites All Creatures Great and Small, Antiques Roadshow, Miss Scarlet, Death in Paradise, and Sister Boniface Mysteries.

We’ll premiere three new mystery series: Bookish, created by and starring Mark Gatiss, whom you may remember from Moonflower Murders, Sherlock, and Wolf Hall; Inspector George Gently, set in 1960s Britain; and Murder in the Mountains, which takes viewers to a scenic town in Austria where, as so often happens, baffling crimes abound. Your WTTW Passport membership will come in handy this month!

On WFMT, we kick off 2026 with an annual tradition: the live New Year’s Concert featuring the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted this year for the first time by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

WTTW viewers can watch the program that evening at 7:00 pm. In keeping with our global theme, WFMT will also bring you performances by the Berlin Philharmonic and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra; Metropolitan Opera productions of Bizet’s Carmen, set in Seville, Spain, and Richard Strauss’s Arabella, which takes place in Vienna; and artists from around the world on Live from WFMT and The Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts. These include four pianists: Canadian Winston Choi, Boris Giltburg from Israel, Polish native Kacper Zaromski, and Chinese-American musician Stephanie Tang. Finally, bringing it back to the United States, WFMT will welcome the international opera star Joyce DiDonato – the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2025-26 Artist-in-Residence – for an interview on Listening to Singers.

or twelve seasons, Finding Your Roots has paired rigorous research with storytelling. As the series returns to WTTW this month, it will examine how genealogy and DNA analysis can place intimate family histories within broader historical movements.

Since its debut in 2012, with Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis as guests, the program has guided almost 300 people through the often complicated terrain of

Each episode unfolds as a kind of historical investigation. A well-known guest takes a seat across from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., opens a leather-bound book, and begins tracing a family history shaped by migration, secrecy, resilience, and chance.

Guests are led from one discovery to the next – from plantation records and immigration documents to census rolls and DNA matches – revealing ancestors who crossed oceans, survived enslavement, concealed identities, or rebuilt lives after upheaval. The geographic scope is broad: coastal West Africa, rural Texas, northern India, Cherokee Nation lands, villages in the Philippines, and Revolutionary War encampments such as Valley Forge all appear as points of origin or return.

Metropolitan Opera In a highly unusual decision for the Met, Mason Bates and Gene Scheer’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay will receive additional performances in February. The new opera, an adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, received its world premiere at Indiana University in November 2024 before making its company premiere at the Met, kicking off their 2025-26 season in September. The production successfully brought in demographic groups new to the opera, with 35% of attendees being first-time Met patrons and half of the audience under the age of 50, selling out its final performance. The growing demand to experience the work prompted general manager Peter Gelb to revive the production for four more performances in February and to add the production to the Live in HD series on January 24. Both the Saturday matinee broadcast and the HD screening were recorded in performance from fall 2025.

Los Angeles Philharmonic South Korea is home to an everexpanding cohort of inventive composers with fresh ideas, and talented performers who have made names for themselves at many of the world’s finest concert halls. For the finale of the Philharmonic’s radio broadcast season, composer Unsuk Chin curates a program showcasing Korean composers and artists who are shaping musical culture and building connections from Seoul to Los Angeles. Hankyeol Yoon leads the LA Phil in two world premieres: H’on by Kay Kyurim Rhie, who lends influences ranging from film and jazz to European avant-garde to Korean folk melded with the blues; and Clockworks and Fireworks by Sunghyun Lee, whose communicative and intellectual music engages performers and audiences alike. The program also features Yura Lee as soloist in Texu Kim’s lullaby-inspired Viola Concerto Ko-Oh exploring the idea of sleep as both a nightly occurrence and a mortal and final destination. Finally, South Korean pianist Sunwook Kim, who came to international recognition when he won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition at age 18, performs Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

WFMT Orchestra Series Following a series of brilliant concerts from Los Angeles, WFMT launches 2026 with a grand tour of Europe.

The season begins January 12 with the Berlin Philharmonic in concert at the 22,000-seat Waldbühne. Gustavo Dudamel leads a dynamic program of composers from Mexico, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico, plus Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs performed by bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Greene.

The concert’s journey across North and South America culminates in dances from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. On January 19, Franz Welser-Möst leads the Vienna Philharmonic in symphonies by Anton Bruckner and Mieczyslaw Weinberg at the Salzburg Festival. On January 26, Alisa Weilerstein is soloist with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra in Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2 conducted by Paavo Järvi.

The program, which also features Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2, was recorded at the George Enescu International Festival in Bucharest.

Listening to Singers After kicking off the season as soloist in the Symphony Ball, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato continues her tenure as CSO Artist-in-Residence with three more performances. In February, Symphony Center presents Emily — No Prisoner Be, a 24-part song cycle on poetry of Emily Dickinson

by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts, written for DiDonato and the genre-defying ensemble Time for Three. At the work’s world premiere in August 2025, Austria’s Vorarlberg Online described the experience as “not a conventional song recital, but an encounter with a poet whose work speaks across time and space that was as artistically ambitious as it was immediately moving.”

DiDonato collaborates with Civic Orchestra Fellows and other guest artists in April for a free community program at Epiphany Center for Notes for Peace, the Negaunee Music Institute’s tribute songwriting project to empower Chicago families who have lost loved ones to gun violence. in May, she returns as soloist with the orchestra in Neruda Songs, Peter Lieberson’s song cycle on the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Joyce DiDonato joins WFMT to preview these performances and to share selections from her diverse discography.

Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts Joshua Mhoon began piano at age seven and advanced rapidly, demonstrating a rare combination of artistry, curiosity, and technical command. Mhoon’s musical vision is shaped by his Chicago upbringing, steeped in the culture of Black American Music, such as R&B, jazz, blues, hip hop, and gospel. WFMT is proud to have been sharing Joshua Mhoon’s artistry since his first appearance on Introductions in 2015.

He has subsequently been featured on Introductions four times as a precollege artist, and in collaboration with cellist Ifetayo Ali-Landing for WFMT’s special Black History Month program Cello and Piano Music by Black Composers in 2021. Now a student at The Juilliard School, he performs his solo Dame Myra Hess recital featuring the beloved “Moonlight” Sonata by Beethoven, the notoriously demanding “Ondine” from Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, select Danzas Afro-Cubanas by Ernesto Lecuona, and works by Respighi and Scriabin.
