From the President & CEO Dear Member, Throughout February and to commemorate Black History Month, WTTW will present powerful programming exploring African American history, culture, and influence. On Tuesday evenings through February 17, we’ll bring you the highly anticipated four-part series Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. that explores the complex relationship between Black Americans and Jewish Americans – forged in shared struggle, tested by division, and representing a uniquely American experience. On page 4, meet the directors and learn how this important project came to be. Also watch for new documentaries about Chicago’s trailblazing aviatrix Bessie Coleman; civil rights leader Medgar Evers; outspoken U.S. Representative Barbara Jordan; and the visionary jazz musician, composer, and poet Sun Ra. As the nation approaches America’s 250th anniversary, this February also marks the launch of Firsthand: Democracy, a yearlong initiative exploring what democracy looks like in action – here in Chicago and across Illinois. At a moment when trust in democratic institutions feels uncertain, Firsthand offers a deeply human look at civic participation through five documentary portraits of individuals working locally to strengthen their communities. This month, WFMT celebrates Black History Month with programming honoring the artistry and legacy of Black musicians. with the creators of Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History

he latest series from renowned scholar and cultural historian Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. – Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History – traces the complex relationship between these two groups forged through shared struggles over four parts airing Tuesdays, February 3-17 at 8:00 pm on WTTW and the PBS app.

The Guide: What is the origin story of this new series?

Sara Wolitzky: I think Dr. Gates really started think-

“Across history, Jews have been mocked and feared, blamed and banished, envied and imitated – and so have Black people,” Dr. Gates says in the show. “And we share something else as well: a duty to keep fighting hatred, wherever it shows up.”

ing about it in earnest after [the 2017 white supremacist rally in] Charlottesville and seeing this moment of both very obvious anti-Jewish hatred and anti-Black racism and the resurgence of this kind of white nationalism in this country. Charlottesville was on the heels of the [2015] massacre at Mother Emanuel [African Methodist Episcopal Church] in Charleston, followed by the Tree of Life [synagogue] shooting in Pittsburgh [in 2018]. This white nationalism that has always had these two groups in its crosshairs was surging.

generation living through the Civil Rights movement and seeing that peak of joint activism. It felt like a good moment to excavate that relationship in a way that was not just celebratory but honest, and look at how the key moments are a quintessentially American story – how they shaped America, where the tensions come from, and how it works best.

Phil Bertelsen: How did we get here? The

essential question.

Wolitzky: One obvious fact is that we do

need each other, and the country needs us.

The Guide: In the years since the events

you referenced and since you started working on this, do you feel the series has become more important, especially since the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas and Israel’s subsequent invasion of Gaza?

until everybody is free, which becomes the dominating Civil Rights-era idea.

The Guide: There’s also a cultural connec-

tion between the two groups; for example, the Jewish-run Chess Records in Chicago, which released influential blues records by Black musicians.

Bertelsen: We look at jazz in particular: we talk about the Great American Songbook and the influence of Jewish composers on jazz music; also, the confluence of their efforts creatively and from a business standpoint. We talk about Louis Armstrong and his relationship with his longtime manager. We look at early Hollywood and

has been satisfying, frustrating, maddening, and illuminating at the same time.

We’ve been here before. And I think there are many lessons to be learned that speak directly to this current climate.

The Guide: Are there any lessons you took

away from working on this?

Wolitzky: What we often try to point to

in the series is on the level of individual relationships. There’s a story of a Jewish housewife, Esther Brown, in the suburbs of Kansas City, who found out through her maid about a Black school that was super underfunded; she helped them fight to desegregate the schools in the town. The link

Bertelsen: The sad truth is, as old as those

events may be, the series has never been more relevant.

Wolitzky: I think it’s also more relevant

because of those October 7th events, because that became the latest in a series of flashpoints and difficult moments that have challenged the sense of connection or potential for unity between these groups.

In a way, I think it’s even more valuable, because part of what this series is exploring is how you survive the tensions and the things that tend to pit people against each other. How do you find solidarity across differences of opinion and still come together in coalition around the things you value?

The Guide: It offers an interesting window

into whiteness as well.

Bertelsen: While we have these shared values and even experiences of oppression, that is a fundamental difference. Black people will never experience whiteness, and therefore there’s a built-in differential between the two groups, regardless of the solidarity that they seek.

Wolitzky: For Jewish people in America, whether they are considered white fluctuates over time, and their access is given and revoked, and it’s always sort of conditional. That helps them recognize the importance of the idea that nobody is free

the foundational figures, who were largely Jewish immigrants, who basically built entertainment, and how that impacted Black people and how Black culture impacted that.

The Guide: You also cover the relationship

between the Chicago philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington, out of which came thousands of schools for Southern Black children.

Bertelsen: The whole series is full of these lesser-known stories. The best way I can describe this series is as a sort of dual biography. I’m just fascinated by the idea that at the same time Columbus was sailing the ocean blue [in 1492] the Jews were getting kicked out of Spain. History is prologue, and to be doing this series in this moment

between Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington came about because of the connection and respect between these two men, or Louis Armstrong and Joe Glaser.

It’s a good reminder that it all starts at that level of individual human connection. The more direct relationships we build in our lives and our communities, the better.

Bertelsen: We have to have the difficult

conversation. I think a lot of times, because of the discomfort that comes from that difficult conversation, we spend more time avoiding it than engaging in it. You need to engage in the conversation about difference and what shared values you have, and start from there.

Folkstage Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Walter Parks both entertains and educates, presenting historic music, originals, and stories that place songs in a modern context. For 10 years, Walter toured as Richie Havens’s sideman and still honors the Woodstock legend at every show. A consummate guitarist, Walter’s solo performances toggle between hollers, spirituals, Appalachian reels, Delta blues, work songs, swamp jazz, and even bits of opera all delivered with his signature northeast Florida swampy feel. As a result of his deep interest in the music of his native region, he has become an expert on the American Folklife Center’s Francis Harper collection of folk music of the Okefenokee Swamp region of Georgia. Now based out of St. Louis, Walter Parks makes his Folkstage debut live in the Levin Studio.

Demarre McGil

Live from WFMT Principal flute of the Seattle Symphony, Demarre McGill was born and raised in Chicago where he began studies at the Merit School of Music at age seven. Recognized as one today’s most compelling flutists, he has won prestigious awards including the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, and has appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the San Francisco, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Grant Park, San Diego, Chicago, and Baltimore symphony orchestras, among others.

As a performer, Demarre McGill actively champions the works of underrepresented composers, and as a dedicated educator and mentor, McGill works to inspire the next generation of musicians, particularly those who may lack traditional pathways into elite training. For this Live from WFMT performance, McGill is joined by pianist Jessica Choe, who has frequently collaborated with the flutist in recital and in Music of Remembrance performances presented by Chicago Opera Theater.

Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts Equal parts “fiendishly good and fiendishly goofy” (Chicago Tribune), ~Nois Quartet is a “prolific, charismatic young ensemble that is swiftly becoming the American saxophone quartet du jour” (Musical America). Founded in 2016, the Chicago-based ensemble is dedicated to championing new music for saxophone and building community through innovative, inclusive, and exceptional musical experiences.

The group has premiered more than 120 new works by some of today’s most inspiring compositional voices.

In the past nine seasons alone, ~Nois has presented at least 60 world premieres by Chicago composers, and serves Chicago youth through their Young Creators Fellowship, which selects two local high school-aged students each year to collaborate with the ensemble on new compositions. For their Dame Myra Hess recital, the quartet performs music by Paquito D’Rivera, Caroline Shaw, and Jessie Montgomery, live from downtown Chicago.

Listening to Singers Denyce Graves is one of the most celebrated American mezzo-sopranos of her generation, known for her powerful voice, dramatic artistry, and versatility across opera, concert, and recital stages worldwide. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1995 and became especially renowned for signature roles such as Carmen and Dalila, performing at leading houses including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Vienna Staatsoper, the Royal Opera House, and Paris Opera. Graves’s singing has also graced several major national public events including the inauguration of George W. Bush, the National Prayer Service after 9/11, and the funeral of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

As a dedicated educator and mentor, she founded the Denyce Graves Foundation to amplify equity and inclusion in classical music. Denyce Graves announced her retirement from the stage following last month’s performances of Porgy and Bess at the Met. She joins WFMT to share her plans to continue working as a stage director, educator, and advocate through her foundation, and to share stories from her illustrious career.

Vienna Philharmonic, Riccardo Muti

WFMT Orchestra Series Riccardo Muti first conducted the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival in 1971, when he led the orchestra in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale — a performance that also marked his international breakthrough as an opera conductor at the festival. His collaboration with the orchestra there has continued (with rare exceptions) for more than five decades, often anchoring the festival’s mid-August “Ferragosto” concerts. Muti’s programs have become so popular that there are now three performances, all of which sell out. Last August, he led the orchestra in Schubert’s Tragic Symphony No. 4 and Bruckner’s Mass No. 3 in F Minor, considered the Austrian composer’s most important and final mass setting. Requiring a large choir (Vienna State Opera Choir) and four soloists (soprano Ying Fang, alto Wiebke Lehmkuhl, tenor Pavol Breslik, and bass William Thomas), the mass was a critical highlight of the festival, “wonderfully realized with excellent solo performances under the once-again commanding Riccardo Muti.” (Kurrier)

Rhiannon Giddens

The Midnight Special Celebrate the birthday of Rhiannon Giddens (b. February 21, 1977), the fearless, boundary-crossing musician who is the ideal artist to represent both classical and folk traditions. Trained as an opera singer, she brings technical mastery and refinement to repertoire rooted in folk, blues, and early American music. With Dom Flemons and Justin Robinson, she co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops, an old-time string band dedicated to reviving and celebrating African American roots music. Artistic director of Silk Road Ensemble, Giddens puts American folk music in dialogue with classically informed music from around the world. Host Marilyn Rea Beyer shares selections from her various collaborations, including the recent album What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow, featuring fiddle and banjo music of North Carolina, and the Grammy Award-winning They’re Calling Me Home with multiinstrumentalist Francesco Turrisi.
