On WTTW, we bid a final farewell to the enduring detective series Grantchester after 11 seasons. In the aftermath of the siege, Geordie fights for his life; Alphy tracks a fugitive through the countryside; and the Grantchester family must face final questions of love, redemption, and forgiveness.

This month, WFMT celebrates a new chapter for one of its signature programs. Beginning in August, Peter van de Graaff becomes the new host of Exploring Music, bringing his warm presence, deep musical knowledge, and almost four decades of broadcasting experience to the internationally syndicated series. On page 4, Peter reflects on the path that led him to WFMT, memorable moments along the way, and what excites him most about leading this treasured program into its next chapter.
Also in August, WFMT launches a new Sunday afternoon series featuring recordings – and one live broadcast –from this summer’s Ravinia Festival. The series opens with acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Jeremy Denk, followed by pianist Misha Dichter celebrating his 50th Ravinia season; cellist Alisa Weilerstein and pianist Inon Barnatan in the Martin Theatre; Augustin Hadelich’s captivating program of Baroque and blues for solo violin; and the Danish String Quartet performing works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Shostakovich. WFMT also concludes its 2026 Grant Park Music Festival season with two concerts led by Giancarlo Guerrero, culminating in the festival finale: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, performed by the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus with an outstanding roster of soloists.

Mystery lovers can continue sleuthing with The Brokenwood Mysteries, Between the Vines, My Life Is Murder, Shakespeare & Hathaway, and many more series available to stream with your WTTW Passport membership. Also this month, American Masters profiles Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver, we meet the people dedicated to preserving a cherished national landmark in Saving George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and we close out August with this year’s Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert, an open-air performance from Austria’s spectacular Imperial Schönbrunn Palace.

From his rich, resonant tone and calm demeanor to his warm and engaging personality, Peter van de Graaff seems to have been destined for a career in radio. His ability to instantly put a room at ease and his wide-ranging knowledge of music history have been integral to his success as a longtime WFMT host.
After more than three and a half decades as the voice of WFMT’s overnight radio program Through the Night, Peter now adds another program to his list: Exploring Music. Beginning in August

2026, he will be adding his voice to the popular weeknight program.
Prior to his first shift on Exploring Music, we sat down with Peter to discuss his extensive career at the station, how he started, and what excites him about the future.
WFMT: How did you first make your way into the radio business?
Peter van de Graaff: I went to New Trier High School, grew up in the area here, and listened to WFMT all the time. I remember tuning in in the
car and thinking…well, it could never happen, but wouldn’t it be amazing to be on the radio?
I thought I was going to become a singer, but time went on and I began to realize that I had more to contribute.
I was also passionate about music and learning other languages. So I thought radio might be a good fit to work my way through college. I got my degree in voice performance, but radio slowly evolved into a full-time thing, and after a couple of years at the station where I started (KBYU), I saw there
was an opening at WFMT.
I applied, thinking they might give me some valuable feedback that would help me as my career developed. But then I got the job – I was 26 years old. I began as a regular host alternating shifts, and then after one year, I was given the overnight shift that I still have, 37 years later.
WFMT: What’s something that you’ll always remember from the early part of your career?
van de Graaff: I’ll always remember the first time I went on the air. I was shaking and petrified. I grew up listening to the legends here: Studs Terkel, Norm Pellegrini, Jim Morath, and so on. I mean, literally – I was almost in tears.
Soon after I began, a listener called in: “Would you tell the announcer that I could tell he’s nervous, but I think he’s gonna be really good.” Those words changed everything – they boosted my confidence and helped me through my first shift.
One more thing: when I first arrived here, I kept seeing bus ads that read, “WFMT – Civilized Radio.” I’ve always kept that in the back of my mind. It’s not about sitting in the laps of the listeners, but treating them with respect, civility, and intelligence. You’re always a guest in their home.
WFMT: What are you most excited to add to Exploring Music?
van de Graaff: I’ve been researching music since I was eight years old, which I think is great preparation
for a program like this. I’m looking forward to doubling down on all kinds of subjects for our listeners –anywhere there are rich discoveries to be made.
WFMT: How do you choose what to feature in the series?
van de Graaff: I begin by programming a show from the top of my head, and then I start delving progressively deeper with research to provide context for the pieces. After that, writing the scripts is the next big challenge. It’s been a bit of a stretch doing the overnight program in addition to working on this one, but it’s a labor of love and passion.
WFMT: What continues to inspire you?
van de Graaff: There’s always something to learn. I’m also always thinking, what can I share? What interesting things can I bring on the air? This is my passion: sharing good music with people. I think there’s a real healing element to music – it improves the lives of listeners. Of all the jobs in the world, how many of them have that ability to inspire? Not many.
So that’s why it’s easy to keep it fresh, plus I try never to duplicate anything I’ve done in the past. The number of recordings and performances that have been discovered, even in the last 40 years…it’s just inexhaustible, and extremely exciting.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Haydn! People are often surprised by that, but it’s an easy answer for me because there is a joy, simplicity, and directness in Haydn that no one else has. He’s not the greatest composer –I think that’s probably Bach – but he’s my favorite.
I play keyboard and more specifically, harpsichord. I also played piano and studied a little violin. I was so bad that the orchestra conductor tried to move me to viola instead! But I’m a singer first and foremost – that’s my instrument, so to speak.
No question: the Fine Arts Building. I’m a big nostalgia buff for old movies, old-time radio. To walk into that building is like going back to 1920, and it’s very, very exciting.
Here’s what I think is the greatest piece ever written: the St. Matthew Passion. As for genre: if I ever have a bad day or need to re-center myself, it’s always a Haydn string quartet that does it for me.
One of my favorite artists of all time is the tenor Fritz Wunderlich, because of passion, diction, beauty of tone, technique…he’s my favorite singer of all time.

In advance of Klaus Mäkelä’s debut at Ravinia this month, WFMT shares the CSO’s Paris-centric concert from last March featuring the Music Director Designate leading Milhaud’s Le Boeuf sur le Toit, Gershwin’s An American in Paris, and a “blistering” (Chicago Tribune) account of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The star Finnish conductor has already established himself as a leading interpreter of Stravinsky’s Ballets Russes through his commercial recordings and highprofile international tours of the works with the Orchestre de Paris. For his upcoming Ravinia performance, Mäkelä revisits The Firebird, the work with which he introduced himself to Chicago audiences in 2022. “This was an organic performance, each scene flowing seamlessly into the next with a sense of an unfolding compelling narrative,” extolled Chicago Classical Review. “Throughout this iridescent score Mäkelä led the musicians with a confidence and podium control beyond his years.”

Celebrating his 25th season as chorus director of the Grant Park Music Festival, Christopher Bell has crafted the ensemble into one of the finest in the country. The festival concludes its season-long celebration of the American semiquincentennial with a program relying on the Grant Park Chorus’s virtuosity and detailed delivery of text for two of the three works being presented. In the halfhour-long oratorio Mount Rushmore, composer Michael Daugherty sets texts of each of the presidents carved into the monument: a letter by Washington reflecting on retirement from the military; extracts from Jefferson’s letters and words from the Declaration of Independence; Roosevelt’s famous, impassioned speech urging preservation of the Grand Canyon; and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The finale of both the concert and the entire season is Beethoven’s colossal and triumphant “Ode to Joy.” WFMT is privileged to share interviews with Christopher Bell on Listening to Singers (August 1) and at wfmt.com.

As a multi-genre recording artist and instrumentalist, Damien Sneed is a pianist, vocalist, organist, composer, conductor, arranger, producer, and arts educator whose work spans multiple genres. He has worked with jazz, classical, pop, and R&B legends, including the late Aretha Franklin and Jessye Norman. Among the prolific work on the “classical” side of his career, Sneed has enjoyed regular collaborations with Denyce Graves, Lawrence Brownlee, and Morris Robinson, and was recently commissioned by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis to compose a reimagined adaptation of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha Damien Sneed joins WFMT to preview The Soul Within Us: Gospel, folk & jazz through art song, the program he will curate and coach for the 15 classical vocal fellows of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute later this month.

Born in Ukraine, but a resident of Finland since the age of five, Dalia Stasevska is the chief conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, the artistic director of the Lahti International Sibelius Festival, and the principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She has established herself as an energetic proponent of contemporary works — championing the music of such composers as Missy Mazzoli, Thomas Adès, and Kaija Saariaho — and a fearless activist. Stasevska has been outspoken in her support of Ukraine, speaking about it publicly while also personally delivering aid to the front lines and conducting concerts in her native country. For her contributions to culture and public service, President Volodymyr Zelensky bestowed her the Order of Princess Olga in 2021. WFMT is delighted to share her performance from the 2026 Kissinger Summer Festival leading the Czech Philharmonic in Richard Strauss’s Don Quixote and Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony.
