Houston Cultural Practitioner & Artist, Nathaniel Donnett, engaged in a backpack exchange with MCLA students in selected locations on campus. Students had the opportunity to exchange their old backpacks for new ones provided by Donnett. During a spring residency, sponsored by MCLA’s Arts & Culture program, the artist will transform the student’s old backpacks into 2-D, mixed-media abstract, and sculptural works. Donnett will photograph each student, in the style of images made for school yearbooks and ask the students quick questions to access memory and words to be mixed into an experimental sound work. These photographs, alongside Berkshire County’s history, and representations of various areas of Berkshire geography will be published as a yearbook gifted to MCLA’s archive, Pine Cobble School and BART’s libraries as a template of what a yearbook could look like through imagination. The final works and sound piece will be presented as an exhibition titled
“To Know A Veil”.
