We’ve also included some fantastic itineraries in well-loved cruise destinations from wine tasting in Bordeaux, to islandhopping in Greece and an Alaska sailing which includes a train journey of a lifetime with Rocky Mountaineer. I was lucky enough to enjoy this trip myself in 2022 and would highly recommend it.

2023 will be an exciting year for luxury cruise with new ships from many luxury and ultra-luxury cruise lines embarking on their inaugural seasons. Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Oceania Cruises and Celebrity Cruises will all be launching new ships with exceptional on-board experiences. Japan’s cherry blossom season is a worldwide phenomenon. The stunning display of pink bursts through the cities and towns of Japan has been celebrated across the region for centuries.

The season resides in Japan, where it holds a very prestigious place in the country’s culture. There are a number of cruise lines which visit this region during the cherry blossom season, just so you can experience it first-hand. Japanese cherry blossom season differs from region to region, but it typically starts at the end of January to early May. Situated on the border between Ontario, Canada and New York, United States, the Niagara Falls spans a group of three waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. The destination is one of the world’s top natural wonders to visit for its picturesque views and experiencing the unmistakable roar of the water as it crashes over the edge.

There are different views of the falls, depending on the side you’re on. You can visit both during your stay to get the best experience, though the views are much better from the Canadian side. While many cruise lines visit North America, Niagara Falls is situated a little inland from the east coast of the country. There are ways in which you can pair a trip with a cruise, such as our Seabourn package featuring transfers and a three-night hotel stay added after a Canada & New England sailing. The Douro Valley is the oldest designated wine region in the world, dating back to 1756. Various regions produce different varieties including the famous Port wine, while in the southern regions of the country you can find Chardonnay, Syrah, and Arinto varieties.

VINEYARD

Bordeaux

Lying on an immense natural harbour formed by three rivers that flow into the Atlantic, Lorient nestles along the beautiful southern coast of Brittany.

As La Rochelle is located close to the CharenteMaritime vineyard and the Poitou Charentes vineyard, wine lovers can opt to spend some time in a winery to meet local winemakers (including producers of cognac or pineau des charentes) and enjoy a wine tour or tasting.

Bordeaux offers a fabulous range of vineyards and magnificent châteaux to visit. Book one of Oceania Cruises’ exclusive excursions here and experience this fabled winemaking region in luxury.

Tucked in France’s Côte Basque, Biarritz first came to prominence in the mid-19th century when Napoleon III built a summer palace here for his wife, Empress Eugenie. The oceanside palace is now the esteemed Hotel du Palais, a landmark for the dynamic, beachrimmed Biarritz.

Bilbao is a charming city both modern and dynamic while at the same time, with its 700 years of history, it is quite traditional as well.

Take a trip to London and get a bird’s eye view of the city from the London Eye. See sights like Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Piccadilly. Then, set sail from the UK and settle into your ship as you begin your cruise.

While Belgium is more focused on beer production instead of wine, it’s still admirable to learn of the varieties and tastes on offer here. Step back in time to the 14th century as you meander along the narrow streets of this medieval gem past gabled buildings and through the bustling market.

Enjoy the scenic trip through the rolling French countryside to Paris and spend the day savouring its gardens, museums and historic sites. Sit back into a local bistro and sample some house wine as you experience la belle vie (the good life).

A SURVEY CONDUCTED BY

SIXSTARCRUISES found that over 60% of people are interested in a small ship cruise. Reasons for this included the personal, one-on-one service; the reduced capacity on-board as they sail with fewer guests; and that there’s more space and complete privacy to enjoy for yourself. Another reason was that you can reach more secluded ports of call, explore the hidden gems of the Mediterranean or visit unique islands in Australasia.

SMALLER SHIPS OFTEN ONLY have up to 500 guests on-board, though most sit around 200-300, meaning you feel at ease with fewer crowds, personal service and a laid-back luxury atmosphere that cannot be replicated. Docking in chic harbours rather than regular ports, on a small ship cruise you find yourself easily blending into cities and towns like a local when visiting places such as Hvar in Croatia or Bonifacio in Corsica.

You could spend a lifetime in Europe’s oldest city and still not see everything it has to offer. To see a veritable “greatest hits” line-up, make your way to Vasilissis Amalias Street for the archaeological walk. Winding through the heart of the ancient city, the route leads to landmarks like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora, Arch of Hadrian, and of course, the Acropolis.

Mykonos is living proof that picture-postcard destinations do exist. Its many charms include its iconic windmills, fabulous beaches, and an irresistible traditional town with a maze of twisting streets and alleys originally designed to confuse marauding pirates. Other adornments include shaded courtyards and balconies lush with flowers, and a lively nightlife that some claim is the best in Europe.

ITINERARY DETAIL:

Once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, eclipsed only by Rome, there’s much to explore at this port of call. The Library of Celsus, still magnificent almost 2,000 years later; the Odeon, and the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre, where St. Paul used to preach. Stretching from this jawdropping amphitheatre to the harbour is the marblemade Arcadian Street. Stroll past the marketplaces, colonnades, and fields of wild fennel, and into bath complexes that once offered piped-in hot water and a sauna.

Situated at the island’s most northern point, Rhodes’ only neighbours on the east and west are gleaming blue seas. This sunny retreat is also home to many historic sites ranging from the ruins of the Temple of Venus to the medieval Street of Knights.

There is no missing the Monastery of St. John, a massive dark fortress atop a hill, standing out against the traditional white houses of the village of Hora that surround it. The monastery is a warren of interconnecting courtyards, arcades, galleries, and roof terraces. There are lovely chapels, some with 12th century frescoes; the treasury exhibits an impressive array of art; and the library contains a wealth of historic texts.

Your daydream of a Greek island meets reality in Santorini – its whitewashed villages cling to cliff sides, and bright blue roofs reflect the sea and sky. Born itself as a volcanic cone, the island blew its top in 1450 BC, its center sank, and it assumed its current crescent shape, outlined by three main islands. The capital, Fira, a pedestrian haven with narrow, meandering cobblestone lanes, is reachable only by cable car, donkey, or for the fit and fearless, a flight of 600 steps.

Also known as Iraklio, Heraklion is a port city and capital of the Greek Island, Crete. Known for the Palace of Knossos, the huge archaeological site dates back thousands of years and includes frescoes and baths. Another main site to witness is 16th-century Koules fortress, guarding the city’s Venetian port.

For the final day of the itinerary spend it in Europe’s oldest city. Athens is like a mythological crossroads of the past and present, where modern buildings share the skyline with spectacular ruins like the Parthenon.

The thing with Antarctica is, it’s not actually that cold. On an average day with no wind, you’re talking about 0°c (or about 32°F). is one of Australia’s can’t-miss destinations. Found in the western region of the country, the Kimberley is an untouched stretch of land running from the Indian Ocean to the Northern Territory in the east. Here is one of the oldest landscapes on earth where the Precambrian Rocks are over two billion years old and the ancient barrier reef system features as a remnant of the Devonian period 350 million years before.

Adele Island is an oasis of tranquillity peeking out of the Indian Ocean. It’s hard to capture the sense of quiet perfection as you stand on this sandy paradise, 65 miles away from Kimberley’s rugged coast. The island is a thriving ocean outpost for breeding birds and turtles, and the hospitable waters form a lively nursery for young humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins.

The Lacapede Islands are a little paradise for bird lovers. Its brown booby colony, possibly the largest on the planet, awaits you with a joyful cacophony. Even if located just off the impressive Kimberley Coast, an expedition to the Lacepedes feels like discovering a wild and remote place.

The Rowley Shoals consists of the three reefs Imperieuse, Clerke and Mermaid. The first two reefs form the Rowley Shoals Marine Park and have sandy cays that will still be visible at high tide. Bedwell Island, a small sandy cay inside Clerke Reef, is home to one of Western Australia’s two colonies of Redtailed Tropicbirds.

Discover the flat plains of Montebello, a collection of islands there engendered mammals such as the Mala (Rufous Hare-Wallaby) and the Djoongari (Shark Bay Mouse) reside. There are 170 islands here, situated 120km from mainland Australia. Today, it’s a destination which play an important part in seabird breeding and turtle nesting.

A spectacular collision of colour spills across the seabed around North Muiron Island - which has to be one of the best spots in the world for snorkelling and scuba diving. Immerse yourself in this underwater universe as tiny fish flit between the corals, and elegant rays sweep gracefully past.

With diverse coral reefs, a dramatic history featuring many firsts for Australia (first European structure and first European settlers), Abrolhos Islands brings a lot to be explored. It’s also the only place where a colony of Australia Lesser Noddy breeds, amongst many other wildlife which reside here including sea lions, lobsters, bearded dragons and wallabies.

AUTUMN IN ALASKA

The weather begins to get milder in the autumn and the seasonal changes bring golden hues to flora and fauna. You could also spot moose as they joust antlers for mates and forage for the winter.

As the gatekeepers to the northern entrance of the fabled Inside Passage, the remote Inian Islands stand between Cross Sound and Icy Strait. Here, spot wildlife along the rugged shores including sea lions, otters and bald eagles.

From Holkam Bay, the waterway is bisected into Tracy Arm to the north and Endicott Arm to the south. Each arm terminates at a stunning blue river of ice: North and South Sawyer glaciers in Tracy Arm and Dawes glacier in Endicott Arm.

Day 8 – Juneau

Juneau, Alaska’s capital, is accessible only by air and sea, due to the rugged mountain terrain that surrounds the city. It has been a world-class travel destination since the early 1900’s. The city has plenty to offer the outdoor adventurer.

Day 9 – Transit Decision Passage, cruising Sumner Strait & Wrangell

The city of Wrangell, a true Alaskan frontier town, sits at the northern end of the island, a short distance from the mouth of the mighty Stikine River. The history of Wrangell is deeply rooted in the Tlingit people, the fur trade and the gold rush.

From Kamloops, continue eastward through the Shuswap region. Enjoy breakfast as you admire the lake views from your seat. Day 1 – Biking, browsing and beautiful sunsets

Vancouver is certainly a region that offers something for everyone. Begin your first day by hiring a bike and cycling around the seawall of Stanley Park with plenty to discover and even picnic spots to enjoy along the beach. You could even stop for a late breakfast or brunch! There are plenty of spots to discover including Brockton Point Lighthouse, Stanley Park Tea House and Prospect Point (offering a perfect view of the Lions Gate Bridge).

Next, head over to Granville Island and wander along the market with over 50 vendors and stalls to see here, ideal for grabbing a bite to eat or taking some treats home for later. Later, head to Sunset Beach for a beautiful sunset to end your first day perfectly.

Day 2 – Shops, swimming and scenic views

On the second day, enjoy some shopping with independent boutiques and venues offering everything you could imagine.

Vancouver is a very cycle-friendly city, so we’d recommend hiring a bike again and cycling to Burrard Street Bridge before reaching Kitsilano. Here, visit one of the best beaches in Vancouver as well as the longest swimming pool in Canada, both of which are beside one another! You can reach here and other beaches nearby via public transport or walking if you wish.

After, visit Queen Elizabeth Park – a 130-acre park named after Queen Elizabeth herself following a visit here in 1993. This is free to enter and features nature trails, waterfalls, a conservatory and tennis courts. It’s a lovely place to relax and unwind after a busy morning. For the evening, head to Main Street where you will find some of Vancouver’s best shopping and dining experiences.

Day 3 – Mountain climbs and indie finds

Today, head north to the mountains and hop on the SeaBus. Offering the quickest and most scenic transport to Waterfront Station. From here, enjoy the local market at Lonsdale Quay as well as Waterfront Park – an ideal respite to take your market finds for a nice picnic.
