The Arctic is home to abundant waters and captivating wildlife, perfect for spotting from your ship as you carve through the ice. Visit between the months of June to August for a chance to spot polar bears, whales, seals, arctic birds and even the Northern Lights!
Expeditions also specialises in the peaceful region of Antarctica, where penguins roam and icebergs crackle in the distance. Enjoy exploring the peaceful waters through the Antarctic Peninsula, visiting one of the richest breeding grounds for penguins, seabirds and seals – all surrounded by glacial mountains and soaring peaks. I joined Greg Mortimer in Svalbard, the cruise line’s purposebuilt ship named after the legendary adventurer and Aurora Expeditions founder of the same name. The ship features expansive observation decks, inviting communal areas, jacuzzis, a mudroom, zodiac launching platforms and more, it was my ideal home while exploring Antarctica.
After a briefing in the Elephant Bar, we collected our keys and made the journey to our rooms. I stayed in a Balcony Stateroom, one of 24 available on-board Greg Mortimer, and this room offers a private en-suite, private balcony, mini-bar, desk and living area, as well as a personal 3-in-1 polar jacket included for polar voyages, which every guest can bring home with them!
One of the key features of AE Expedition itineraries is the spirit of adventure. The cruise line pride themselves on providing a space for guests to experience the wild places in a range of different ways from kayaking, hiking, skiing, snorkelling and even diving. During my time in the Arctic, this couldn’t be more true!
My 12-day itinerary, Svalbard Odyssey, focused on the best of Svalbard with near-endless daylight during summer months as well as plenty of wildlife to see from land and the ship. We enjoyed polar bear briefings for what to do should we spot one; lectures on the destinations in the Arctic and its history; Zodiac tours surrounded by glaciers and mountain backdrops; spotting Arctic birds swooping in the skies from ashore; and taking on the polar plunge at 80° north!
My time on-board offered the chance to enjoy the Arctic wilderness at its best with experts in Expedition Team offering priceless insights and knowledge about the flora and fauna as we sailed. Though every day offered something to remember, my highlight had to be seeing a polar bear in the wild. What a moment to share with fellow passengers and something will always remember.
