WHAT’S INCLUDED WITH AN EXPEDITION CRUISE?

EXPEDITION SHIPS

Expedition ships are smaller than traditional cruise ships but still offer guests the traditional comforts of luxury cruises, like spacious suites, fine dining and exceptional service. They are designed and built to navigate through smaller estuaries and shallower waters to get closer to wildlife and facilitate deeper exploration of remote destinations.

WILDLIFE

From swimming with turtles and interacting with penguins to admiring polar bears and reptiles in their natural habitat, expedition cruising provides explorers with the opportunity to discover fascinating wildlife up close in a way you could never have imagined.

EXPERT GUIDES

A fantastic benefit of expedition cruising is the extensive array of industry-leading experts travelling on board for the duration of the trip. From horticulturalists and marine biologists to geologists and historians, these expert guides provide a unique and fascinating experience for travellers throughout their trip.

EXPERIENCES

Expedition itineraries are trips of a lifetime, rich with immersive experiences and unforgettable moments in some of the most remote, breathtaking corners of the planet. Expeditions offer guests plenty of opportunities to truly immerse themselves in the natural surroundings through kayaking, submersibles, hikes, zodiacs, polar plunges, cultural experiences and much more.

THE ARCTIC

Although remote, this breathtaking landscape is home to an abundance of life, abloom with flowering plants in the summer season and teeming with life all year round. The sea ice is crucial in not only providing a home for Arctic wildlife but regulating the Earth’s climate too.

As the Arctic’s vast wilderness unfolds before you, each day promises unforgettable adventures. From fascinating wildlife and extraordinary ice formations to midnight sun and the northern lights, this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip of exhilaration that you’ll never forget. Travelling on purpose-built ships, designed with cutting-edge technology and a reinforced hull to navigate the depths of ice, you won’t experience the raw beauty of this remote region better than on an expedition cruise.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE ARCTIC ON AN EXPEDITION CRUISE?

The destination is abuzz with life during the warmer months, making it a fantastic time to visit this unique part of the world. The Arctic cruising season is typically from late May to September, when the ice has retreated enough to allow for navigation and wildlife activity is at its peak.

WHAT WILDLIFE MIGHT I SEE ON AN ARCTIC EXPEDITION CRUISE?

While it’s home to many mammals, the region is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. The Arctic attracts many migratory species each year, who provide stunning spectacles across the wetland areas as they congregate to breed.

Meanwhile on land, explorers will have the chance to spot a variety of species like Arctic foxes, reindeer, musk oxen and of course, polar bears, which, if you’re lucky, can be viewed on hikes and land excursions across the ice.

I gained my expedition experience through cruising to the Arctic, which was phenomenal. The highlight of my trip was watching a polar bear walking along the ridge, before entering the water and swimming in front of us - what an amazing experience! Each day is different to the next, and every moment is more surreal and spectacular than you could ever imagine.

We had an unbelievable time, admiring the pointed mountain backdrops and tidewater glaciers. We were in awe of the amazing walrus we were able to see as they really are huge! We were even lucky enough to see some puffins!”

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS ON AN EXPEDITION CRUISE?

The wonderful thing about these islands is their year-round seasonality, where they are suitable for different experiences throughout each season. December to May offers warmer weather and calmer seas, while June to November brings cooler temperatures and the chance to see more active marine life.

WHAT WILDLIFE MIGHT I DISCOVER IN THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS?

These islands are home to a fantastic variety of species found nowhere else on Earth, including the famous Galápagos tortoises, marine iguanas, and flightless cormorants, promising a truly unique experience.

The surrounding waters are full of marine life such as hammerhead sharks, manta rays, sea lions and many colourful fish. There is also an impressive array of avian life here too, from blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds to the iconic Darwin’s finches.

The Galápagos Islands were incredible, with each day just as exciting as the next; you never know what you are going to see, and the scenery is just stunning - you could blink and miss something amazing. This really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I can honestly say this was the most incredible trip I have ever taken in my life.

I loved swimming with penguins, sharks and sea turtles - that was the best cruise experience I’ve ever had. Although I’d have to say that my main highlight of the expedition was the giant tortoise ranch.”

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL AROUND THE KIMBERLEY ISLANDS?

The best time to travel around the Kimberley Islands on an expedition cruise is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to October. This period offers more stable weather conditions, with lower humidity and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the region’s stunning landscapes and engaging in outdoor activities.

Specifically, the months of May to September are particularly popular, as temperatures are comfortable and wildlife sightings are more frequent, including migrating whales.

WHAT WILDLIFE MIGHT I SEE ON A KIMBERLEY ISLANDS EXPEDITION CRUISE?

• Marine Life: Keep an eye out for dolphins and various species of whales, including humpback and blue whales, especially during migration season.

• Saltwater Crocodiles: These formidable reptiles can often be spotted sunning themselves on riverbanks and beaches.

• Birds: The region is home to a rich variety of bird species, such as sea eagles, ospreys, and numerous shorebirds. Look for the iconic Brolga and the elusive Jabiru.

• Land Animals: You might encounter wallabies and various reptiles, including snakes and monitor lizards, in the bushland and rocky areas.

• Marine Snakes: The waters around the Kimberley Islands are home to several species of sea snakes, which are fascinating to observe while snorkelling or diving.

• Coral Reefs: Snorkelling in the clear waters can reveal vibrant coral reefs teeming with colourful fish and other marine life.
