The Land Down Under Wanderlust!

In this issue we explore the timeless marvel of travel.

It’s almost summer time and that usually means that the travel bug has everyone itching to go somewhere, someplace where they either have never been to before or a favorite hideaway place.

If you think of how long it takes to travel from one continent to the next, how about the time it takes to travel from one galaxy or universe to the next?

“Do you come from a land down under? Where women glow and men plunder...” Men At Work’s catchy tune had me pining for the “land down under” as far back as I can remember. To be sure, I’ve been close but have never set foot in that land. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore were all destinations in the past but never the land down under. Australia has always been a dream destination, as I’m sure it is for most of you. If you’re from Asia, especially from those three countries I just mentioned, it would be just a short hop. If you’re flying from the US, it’s a solid 14-1/2 hour plane ride from Los Angeles International Airport. And alas, if you’re flying from Europe, like London Heathrow, it takes a minimum of 22 hours and it could take longer if you factor in the waiting times at the airport and some estimates put it at a whopping 55 hours! It is after all -- the land down under. If you have the time to spare and you’re flying from the US, why not visit Hawaii first and then fly to Sydney? We didn’t have the luxury of time or days to spare, so we opted to fly direct to Sydney to experience the city and what it has to offer. Check it out on Land Down Under. No matter where you go, you need to travel in style. No matter, what mode of transportation you take, traveling in style is a must.

We dreamed up a scenario where an alien being travels from outer space and lands in our very own backyard in the Pacific Northwest. In most scenarios dreamed up by Hollywood, aliens and/or earthlings traveling to other galaxies, are usually decked in bodysuits. What if “they” looked just like us albeit, instead of bodysuits, wore vintage or retro attire? Intriguing thought perhaps? Retrofuturism is imagining the future from the point of view of an earlier era. In Out of this world, we explore the idea of what a female outer space traveler would look like if she had traveled from a time and place that was from the past. If you had your choice of transportation, which would be more exciting for you? Hoping on a chopper? Cruising the lake or any body of water in a speed boat or yacht? Flying first class on a modern jetliner? Or taking matters into your own hands and driving an American muscle car? No matter, what mode of transportation you pick or fancy, the key is to enjoy the journey and make memories while doing so. There are so many cool places in this world with so many people of different cultures to connect with, not to mention the smorgasboard of cuisine to savor, that it would be a waste if you didn’t take that first step to explore what’s outside your comfort zone and travel this vast world before you even worry about Mars and other planets.

AUSTRALIA The Land Down Under

Architect Jørn Utzon’s winning design of the Sydney Opera House stands the test of time and is Australia’s most recognizable landmark.

Highly recommended is an indoor tour of the Opera House which features several concert halls as well as an inside look at its history. A train ride to Circular Quay is the best way to get to and from this famous attraction. During the month of May, for three weeks, VIVID Sydney Festival is held lighting up the city’s buildings and most especially the “sails” of the Opera House.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, whose famous nickname is the “Coathanger” because of its arch-based design, carries rail, vehicular, and pedestrian traffic from the Sydney CBD and the North Shore.

This famous landmark is best viewed from the Sydney Opera House as well as from taking ferries to and from Darling Harbour, and Luna Park which gives you a great vantage point to take pictures of both the bridge and the Sydney Opera House. If you’re adventurous, a bridge walk, which costs an arm and a leg, might be worthwhile. At the top of the bridge you will notice two flags -- the Austalian flag and the Aboriginal flag.

The Sydney Central Business District is the most populous city in Australia and is a juxtaposition of old and new architecture. It is the center of nightlife and entertainment.

Designed as a marketplace, the Queen Victoria Building with its Romanesque Revival architecture, spans a whole city block and can be easily reached by taking the train to the Town Hall station. Luxury shoppes and eating places call it home.

“The building consists of four main shopping floors. The top three levels have large openings (protected by decorative cast-iron railings) that allow natural light from the ceiling to illuminate the lower floors. Much of the tilework, especially under the central dome, is original, and the remainder is in keeping with the original style. Underground arcades lead south to Town Hall railway station and north to the Myer building. The upper level is especially spacious at the northern and southern ends of the building. The northern end was previously the Grand Ballroom, and is today a tea room. --Wikipedia

Sydney trains are the best way to navigate the city. Double decker trains (available on some lines) transport passengers to and from the city on eight lines. Purchase an OPAL card with tap on, tap off ease.

Westfield Sydney is home to 350 shops and numerous flagship stores. It is located below the Sydney Tower.

Old and new architecture give the city of Sydney its unique character.

The Sydney Tower Eye stands 309 meters high and is a great vantage point to see the city from up above. Purchase tickets to see a minimum of 3 attractions to get the best price.

The CBD as seen from the Sydney Tower Eye Take the train to Town Hall station and then walk from the Queen Victoria Building heading to Market Street to the Sydney Tower

Bondi Beach is east of the Sydney CBD and is the most visited beach in Australia.

Take the trains to Circular Quay and then take the train to Bondi Junction. From Bondi Junction station, take the buses to get to the beach. Get off at the very last stop and then walk your way down the beach to take it all in and finally get back on the bus to Bondi Junction and then back to the CBD via any of the train stops.
