FOREWORD

As a unifying theme for our 1963 WENONAH, we have chosen familiar scenes from our college and its surroundings. Through the eyes of the often unnoticed faces at our college, we shall see our school, its people and places, its activities and life. Many of the events that we record may have seemed insignificant when they occurred, but in years to come they will be among the memories that we cherish.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE

For several years, as part of the Inter-institutional Exchange Program, Winona State College has had an affiliation with Laereskole Teachers Training College in Oslo, Norway. Last year, Miss Aarestad taught at the Laereskole while Dr. P. M. Juul came to Winona to teach in her place. Miss Gerd Kjustad, a Norwegian student, was also here to study at Winona State. This year, Sylvia Wedul and Betty Schulze, two of our students, are studying at the Laereskole. Through the exchange of letters and teaching materials as well as of people, we are learning more about the Norwegian educational system and the faculty and students of the Laereskole are learning more about ours.

Purple and white chevrons, worn by freshmen this year instead of the traditional beanies, headed the list on the orientation program. As frosh went through registration, testing, and assemblies, they were placed on a team and the one compiling the most points through designated activities was honored with a banquet. Other activities such as frosh king and queen coronation, a “Staff Stomp,” club night, talent night, and a tour of the city helped new students become acquainted with WSC campus life.

1962 HOMECOMING

The 1962 Homecoming festivities got under way by the presentation of queen candidates. Different organizations presented their candidates by means of colorful skits. The excitement of Homecoming flaired during the campaigning and balloting. Tension was climaxed at the pepfest when Dana Blum, sponsored by the Dolphin Club, was crowned queen of Homecoming and began her reign over the rest of the activities. Spirit was high during the pepfest and bonfire which took place after the coronation.

Other highlights were the Variety Show, Opening of the Smog,

parade. With a large crowd of spectators in attendance for the game, the Warriors defeated Bemidji 20—6. At a dance culminated the festivities, many friendships were renewed among the alumni and students.

These successful events were planned and carried out by Leon Dudycha and his committee.

CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES

The Snowball dance, sponsored by Sigma Tau Gamma, opened our two weeks of Christmas activities. Students participated by decorating in and around the college and dormitories. Other activities included the Richards Hall Cafeteria Christmas Banquet, open house in the dormitories, and Christmas caroling by campus religious groups. The performance of “The Messiah” highlighted the Christmas activities.

WINTER CARNIVAL

Snodays was the theme of the 1963 Winter Carnival sponsored by the Phi Sigma EpsiIon fraternity. Voting for the queen took place a few days after all queen candidates were introduced at a supper in Richard’s Hall cafeteria. Gracie Greenwald was crowned queen at a dance held at the Oaks. Four-day tournament games consisted of snow soccer, tug-of-war, volleyball, and broom hockey, all of which were held at Lake Winona. Also included in the Winter Carnival activities was a treasure hunt for the prize of $25.00. Final events of Snodays was the Sweaterball held in Richard’s Hall cafeteria. Trophies were awarded to the winning teams in the tournaments.
