ABOUT THE COVER ■

Out of man’s struggle comes progress. As a representative fragment of mankind, students experience the many conflicts that confront all men.

As a physical representation of the student in struggle, our classic figure is portrayed in struggle between the traditional, the white triangular plane, and the new free form line from which comes the inevitable promise of progress in education.

Students express themselves in the classroom, in the various activity groups and in the sports field. It is through these channels of expression and through the facilities of the campus buildings and the guidance of the faculty that the students develop the democratic and constructive attitude.

This year has been another year filled with repeated trials, good times, work and hope.

And so the pen records the elusive spirit of our yesterday 1951

Graduating with a B. A. degree from St. Olaf, Dr. Minne earned his M. S. and Ph. D. at the University of Wisconsin. Coming to Winona State Teachers College in 1932, he was science instructor until 1944, when he became president of the college.

His reserved manner and ingenious way of finding the right answer to administrative problems have gone a long way in adding teamwork to the college. His friendliness with students and sympathy toward their point of view helps in making Winona a fine school.

As editor-inchief this year, Ruth Wendt guided each publication from the issuing of assignments to proofreading final galleys. The monthly edition was produced with the combined efforts of the editor and page editors Robert Fenwick, Mary Ellen Christgau, Dorothy Bergsrud and Lyle Roschen. Paul Sagal handled the business and advertising; Sylvia Eskar headed the circulation department.

When the paper came out the staff rested until the pressure for copy deadlines started again.

The yearbook recorded the activities of the students and the events that constituted the college year. The staff was organized early in the fall and pictures were taken and copy was written while advertising and subscriptions were being sold. Editor Rosemary Seibert gave assignments and deadlines to the key staff people and Business Manager Tom Stoltman kept track of finances.

The theme of the book is introduced in the cover which was designed by Robert Crumb. Pictures and copy were then made to fit the layouts with the usual amount of rushing and lastminute work. While the book was at press, pictures for next year’s annual and final financial matters were taken care of.

It^s Homecoming

Sockato! Wally Dohman’s prize winning slogan and the selection of the queen from the many candidates put everyone in the Homecoming spirit. Under the supervision of Chairman Eddie Barrows, there were radio programs, decorations on the dorms, posters in the halls of T. C. and assembly skits to remind students of the coming event.

The evening before the big day. Queen Iris Jacobsen was escorted to her throne by Warren and Wallace Maceman. Football co-captains, Horst Radtke and Vic Strensrud, presented Queen Iris with the crown. Following the coronation at Somsen, there was a snake dance to the bonfire.

Several clubs had breakfasts or banquets the day of the parade. Neighboring bands marched between the nineteen' various floats which were decorated and sponsored by the clubs.

The game was lost to Mankato in the new Maxwell Field Stadium, but the Homecoming spirit never faded. Instead it carried the faculty and students “out of this world” with a Men From Mars theme at the armory in the evening.

Thanks to Eddie Barrows and his helpers, everyone could recall a very successful Homecoming week-end.

The 1950 Warriors of the gridiron, guided by Coach Brodhagen and paced by ten seniors, fought their way to two victories in a seven game schedule.

One of those two wins was a 7-6 defeat of the Wartburg Knights in which all of the scoring was done in the last five minutes; Winona came through with a Swota-Boffa aerial and a drop-kicked extra point. The Warrior’s other triumph was a 19-0 trampling of the Moorhead S. T. C. Dragons which gave Winona the fourth place spot in the conference standings.

The tradional game with St. Mary’s Redmen was won by St. Mary’s on a frozen field by a score of 25-0. The Warriors lost their conference opener to Bemidji 7-6 after leading into the last quarter by 6-0 on Swota-Connaughty pass. The Beds held St. Cloud to a "one touchdown lead going into the last three minutes, before succumbing by 32-7. In the homecoming game with the Mankato Indians, who had not been held to less than two touchdowns by a conference opponent all season, the purple and white only lost by a score of 7-0 after having failed to cash in on four scoring opportunities themselves.

W. S. T. C.’s hardcourt Warriors of ’50-51 hooped their way to a won and lost record of fifteen and eight, the best since the 1930’s. This included a 6-2 record in the M. S. T. C. conference play which brought the purple and white into a three way first place tie with Mankato and Bemidji.

T. C. lost both games to its traditional rival, St. Mary’s. The only other team to twice beat the Peds was St. Cloud. It was Winona’s only loss on its home floor; however, these two losses stand as wins in the conference since St. Cloud forfeited these games. The warriors trounced La Crosse and Eau Claire, the first and second place teams in the Wisconsin T. C. conference. Winona also defeated the 1950 Minnesota State AAU champs.

George Vondrashek, Pete Polus, and Rod Lingenmlter were Winona’s top scorers respectively. John Anderson and Earl Holst, third and fourth high scorers, left for the navy midway in the season. The season closed with the unanimous choice of George Vondrashek as all conference center, the selection of Pete Polus, for the second straight year, asa second team all conference guard, and the honorable mention being given to forward Rod Lingenfelter.

Intramural

Intramural basketball gives all college men a chance to compete in sports within the school. This year the Swishers representing the National League were victorious over the Swedes who represented the American League. Lyle Ellinghuysen scored 16 of the Swisher’s 37 points while Olson was high point man for the Swedes with 10 of the 25 points.

Dick Elliott had charge ofmanaging the program which arranged for afternoon and evening games being played throughout the winter quarter. Ref experience was gained by many future physical education teachers.

One of the main features of the season was the faculty game in which the intramural boys and several faculty members entertained the student body with some concentrated playing.

For the second straight year Winona carried off The Minnesota-Wisconsin league baseball championship, this time on the strength of a 9-1 record. Their only conference loss was to St. Cloud, 1211, after T. C. had defeated them 7-2 in the first game of the double header.

The Warriors bowed twice to La Crosse which was the only team to defeat Winona twice during the season. It took Iowa State, who had previously been victorious over Minnesota, ten innings to edge the Peds 4-3.

The bats of the Big Nine Champion, Wisconsin, were muffled for the first three innings; Stanley Prokopowicz bashed out a three run round tripper in the seventh inning, but in spite of this, Wisconsin emerged with a 13-7 victory over T. C.

Women’s P. E. Club

The Physical Education Club activities were centered around the professional interests of the group. The monthly programs consisted of work and discussion meetings and social activity. Two of the main projects this year were selling homecoming buttons and selling candy at all the basketball games. Joyce Peterson, president; Harriet Jorgenson, vice-president; Luetta Rheingans, secretary-treasurer. Advisers were Miss Talbot, Miss Berven, and Miss Patterson.

W. A. A.

All girls have an opportunity to participate in the activities of the Women’s Athletic Association. The high light of this year was a trip to the annual Play Day at the University of Minnesota. The officers, with Iris Jacobsen, Joyce Peterson, Pat Schuler, Beverlee Brosius, Joyce Moon and Lois Mohr, made up the W.A.A. Boaid which supervised the activities. Harriet Jorgenson, President; Melra Bohnen, Vice-president; Beverly Deamin, Secretary-Treasurer. The advisers were Miss Berven and Miss Patterson.

The war too is a part of our pattern, a part of our struggle, that lends itself to mankind and to progress but not without destruction. Our students have been and are being represented in this phase of the pattern which is the outward manifestation of struggle called war. Today it is the Korean War. Tomorrow
