DIRECTIONS FOR USE OF TABLES TABLE No. XIV Distance of slope stake from side or shoulder stake for any width roadway, slope 1Y2 to 1. If ground is nearly level, the cut or fill at side stake is located by the double entry method in left column and top row. The number in body of table in same row and column gives distance from side stake to slope stake. If ground is not level estimate the difference in elevation between ihe side stake and slope stake, lower target by this amount if cut, elevate if fll. Add this amount to cut or fill and find distance in table. Set up rod at this point, and line of sight should cut target. If it does not make the slight adjustment necessary.

TABLE No. VIII To find Tangent and External for curve of

any other degree, divide by degree of curve and add correction found in column of corrections. Degree of curve with a given I may be found by dividing tangent, (or external), opposite I by given tangent, (or external). The distance from a point on the tangent to

the curve is very nearly the square of the tangent length divided by twice the radius.

The square of any distance, divided by twice the radius, will equal the distance from tangent to curve, very nearly. To find angle for a given distance and deflection. Rule I. Multiply the given distance by .01745 (def. for 1z for I ft. see Table II.), and divide given deflection by the product. Rule 2. Multiply given deflection by 57.3, and divide the product by the given distance. To find deflection for a given angle and distance. Multiply the angle by .01745, and the product by the distance. GENERAL DATA RIGHT ANGLE TRIANGLES. Square the altitude, divide by twice* the base. Add quotient to base for hypotenuse. Given Base loo,Alt. 1o.o+2oo00=.5. 1oo+.5= 1oo.5 hyp. Given Hyp. loo, Alt. 25.252+20oo3.125 100-3.125=96.875 =Base.

Error in first example, .002; in last, .045. To find Tons of Rail in one mile of track: multiply weight per yard by II, and divide by 7.

LEVELING. The correction for curvature and refraction, in feet and decimals of feet is equal to 0.574ds, where d is the distance in miles. The correction for curvature alone is closely, jds. The combined correction is negative. PROBABLE ERROR. If dg, de, d5 , etc. are the discrepancies of various results from the mean, and if 7Id=the sum of the squares of these differences and n=the number of observations, then the probable error of the mean= : 0.6745 )
