idden away in a tangle of swampy backwaters, tall cottonwoods and old railroad dikes is an enigma called Aghaming Park. Isolated and undeveloped, Aghaming Park is an 1,800-acre chunk of semi-wild bottomland that belongs to the City of Winona, Minnesota, but sits across the Mississippi in Wisconsin.

n the summer and fall, the river and its backwaters offer a cornucopia of wild edibles. Arrowhead is a common backwater plant whose tubers are delicious boiled, drained, boiled again, and peeled. The luminous yellow blooms of the American lotus are soon replaced by its distinctive pods, yielding seeds that are edible raw or cooked when immature, and when brown and fully ripe, can be roasted like nuts or ground into flour. The young leaves of the lotus can also be cooked as a green, and the roots prepared like sweet potatoes. Yel-

Aghaming is in the curious position of being an historic crossroad of transportation but is now mostly inaccessible. The best way to get to the area is to walk illegally across
