From the Executive Director

For 75 years, we’ve been fighting for animals. And thanks to you, we’ve made real change. Countless animals have been saved from lives on factory farms, rescued from exploitative wildlife tourism and given sanctuary when they needed it most.

But we know there’s so much more to do. The next 75 years won’t be easy. The world is changing fast — climate change, environmental destruction and the ongoing exploitation of animals threaten everything we’ve worked so hard to achieve. But with you by our side, we know we can rise to the challenge.

We’re also excited to welcome Tricia, our new Global CEO, whose leadership will help guide us into this bold new chapter.

Enclosed is your newsletter, where you can read more about the incredible impact you’ve made possible.

Thank you for being part of this vital work. We couldn’t do it without you.

For animals and the planet,

“I know that through collective action we can change the world for animals and create a future where every animal is treated with respect. Benefiting all animals but also benefiting us and our planet.”

You protected animals from wildfires

Thanks to you, animals impacted by wildfires, both here in Canada and in the U.S., got the support they needed when it mattered most.

In Saskatchewan, your generosity helped us partner with SaskSPCA to provide emergency food for cats and dogs in communities affected by the fires. While families faced evacuations and uncertainty, you helped make sure their pets didn’t go hungry.

Earlier this year, you also helped support our wildfire response in California. With your help, we provided emergency funding to local partners like Pasadena Humane and Best Friends Animal Society, who took in hundreds of displaced animals, provided medical care and ensured they had safe places to recover.

Because of you, animals weren’t forgotten. Thank you for always being there when they need you most.

Making a world of difference

Global

You’re helping to end factory farming and build a better future for farmers and animals

You make it possible for us to push for stronger protections for farm animals and shift toward a more humane, sustainable and plant-based food system. With you by our side, we’re able to call on governments, restaurants, grocery chains and financial institutions to do their part.

Creating a healthy and sustainable food system requires transitioning away from diets heavy in animal protein and our reliance on factory farming. It means embracing farming systems that respect animal welfare. Because of you, we’re creating a food system that protects animals, supports responsible farmers and promotes a healthier future for people and the planet.

Ottawa, Canada

You helped make animal protection an election issue

Thanks to your support, thousands of Canadians raised their voices during the national animal protection debate on April 23, sending a clear message to decision makers. Apennine Mountains, Italy

You’re protecting the Marsican bear through Wildlife Heritage Areas

Thanks to you, the critically endangered Marsican brown bear has a safer future in Italy’s Central Apennines. Your support helped establish the Wildlife Heritage Area Network including the Apennines Marsican Bear Heritage Area, where bears and communities thrive together. These areas safeguard wildlife, restore ecosystems and promote coexistence. Because of you, this iconic species and the biodiversity it supports, can endure.

Wildlife Heritage Areas offer a powerful alternative to exploitative wildlife tourism. They recognize and support destinations where animals are truly free, and communities benefit by protecting, not exploiting, wildlife. With your continued support, we can grow this network to protect even more species and landscapes around the world.

Jakarta, Indonesia

31 monkeys got a second chance because of you

Last September, Jono was the first of 31 monkeys you helped rescued from an inhumane dancing monkey training centre in Indonesia.

Partnering with Jakarta Animal Aid Network, your kindness provided them with vital veterinary care, safe shelter and rehabilitation.

Thanks to you, Jono and the other monkeys are recovering well. Thank you for giving these animals a second chance.

Punjab Province, Pakistan

You’re

helping bears beat

the heat

When temperatures hit 50°C at Balkasar Sanctuary in Pakistan, your generosity provides life-saving cooling systems: water sprays, shaded areas and around-the-clock care for the 68 rescued bears.

As climate change brings more extreme weather, your ongoing support helps the sanctuary adapt to new challenges year after year. Together, we’re ensuring these vulnerable animals continue to receive the protection they need in our changing world.

Xamã, Valente & Melancia are healing thanks to you

When Xamã (pictured above), a two-month-old jaguar cub, was found alone in Brazil’s fire-ravaged forests, his future hung in the balance. These fires, often set to clear land for industrial farming, destroy habitats and displace countless animals.

But thanks to you, Xamã was rescued, rehabilitated and became the first male jaguar successfully reintroduced to the Amazon.

Your generosity didn’t just save one life; it supported a system of care that gives wildlife a fighting chance against the forces threatening their survival.

After careful health checks, Xamã’s collar will track his wild journey, deter poachers and shed light on elusive Amazon jaguar behaviour.

Oncafari and World Animal Protection Brazil strategize Xamã’s historic release, proving local partnerships are key to saving endangered species.

Like Xamã, tapirs Valente and Melancia were victims of fires linked to unsustainable agriculture. Severely burned and dehydrated, they faced grim odds, until your support empowered our partners at Onçafari to provide critical care, from laser therapy to wilderness rehabilitation. Their recovery is a testament to what’s possible when compassion meets action.

These stories reflect a deeper truth: protecting animals means protecting the delicate balance of our natural world.

Through your ongoing support, we’re able to respond to emergencies like these while working toward lasting solutions. When our relationship with animals is one of respect rather than exploitation, wildlife can thrive in healthy habitats.

Each animal given a second chance reminds us of the world we’re building together, one where both animals and people can flourish.

You make stories like these possible.

As one of our most committed supporters, you already understand how your gifts save lives. Today, you could help another Xamã waiting in the wings: consider a special one-time gift to fund emergency rescues, or share this story with someone who cares about wildlife as deeply as you do. Either way, thank you for being the steady force behind these second chances.

How one couple turned their passion for animals into a lasting gift

Long-time supporters Jesper and Merete have included World Animal Protection in their will — a natural extension of their lifelong love for animals.

Living peacefully with their two collies, Amanda and Tut, the couple have supported our work for over 20 years. They were particularly moved by the plight of bears trapped in bile farms and the harsh conditions faced by farm animals. “Animals are completely at the mercyofhumans,” says Merete. “They deserve better.”

As an unmarried couple, they wanted to ensure each other’s future — and also make a lasting difference for animals. Including World Animal Protection in their will brought peace of mind. “It feels right,” Jesper explains. “Ourloveforanimalshasbeensuchabigpartof our life — of course it should live on.”

Many people don’t realize that it’s possible to do both — leave something behind for your loved ones and include a gift to a cause

that’s close to your heart. Whether it’s a small percentage or a fixed amount, every gift helps create a kinder future for animals. It’s a way to reflect your values, even after you’re gone, and to leave the world a little better than you found it.
