West Chester University, Wells School of Music, and West Chester University Foundation would like to thank the following donors for their individual gifts of over $1,000 to the Wells School of Music program between 2025 and 2026. We would also like to thank those donors who have chosen to remain anonymous.
Our 2026–27 season is a celebration of jazz and improvisation on campus at WCU. In the 1926–27 season, a new dance band was formed on West Chester's campus, the Johnnie Smith Orchestra. This band changed names twice in the next four years. First calling themselves the 'Purple and Gold Dance Band' and in 1932, Larry Ginter reorganized the band that brought the best of the best together, feeling that the sound of the band was so good it should be labeled as the ‘criterion’. In the fall of 2026, we will celebrate 100 years of the longest running band of its kind in the United States. The celebration will include the current Criterions, an all-star alumni band, and alumni dance band, a soiree, and one of the world's leading musical voices, vibraphonist Stefon Harris. There will be premieres of newly commissioned works by Bob Mintzer and Orrin Evans.
Jazz music in America is a communal music, largely defined by its tradition of learning in the process of playing with masters of the craft. These past six seasons, our students have worked with no fewer than seven guest artists per season including: NEA Jazz Master David Liebman, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, Pulitzer Prize finalist Billy Childs, saxophonist Steve Wilson, 1963 WCU Alum Bob Curnow, pianist Orrin Evans, master drummer Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, and composer and saxophonist Bob Mintzer among many more! A new lecture series and Pops Orchestra with the WCUSO have also added to expansion of the program. Though the Jazz Studies Program is not one hundred years old, it is thriving as a direct result of the level of the Criterions
Jazz Ensemble and the commitment of the generations of students who led the band and have participated in it. Beyond the November celebration, I have elevated our seasonal offerings to showcase the talent of our students and the promise of the future. This season will feature fifteen guest artists on campus including: Helen Sung, Peter Evans, Tyshawn Sorey, Orrin Evans, Danielle Angrand, Tim Warfield, and a Sonny Rollins tribute with the Statesmen Jazz Ensemble! I hope that you will join me at these events and get a chance to feel the power of live music and the hard work of our students. It is a great honor to usher the Criterions into their second century, and to expand the impact of our jazz studies program in our community and beyond.
Jonathan Ragonese, Director of Jazz Studies wcupa.edu/100YearsOfJazz

West Chester University Wells School of Music | Swope Music Building | 817 S. High Street | West Chester, PA 19383
s we embark on another Wells School of Music Concert Season, we have much to celebrate! On the cover of this year’s concert brochure, we have featured the Criterions Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Jonathan Ragonese. This fall, November 6-8, we will begin our celebration of 100 Years of Jazz at West Chester University. To commemorate this milestone, we have launched a fundraising campaign to raise $500,000 for the Friends of Jazz Endowment. We are so grateful to Criterion’s alumna, Kristine Moyer-Higgins, class of 83’, who kicked off the campaign with a pledge of $100,000. Kristine is an accomplished saxophonist, entrepreneur, and supporter of jazz and improvisation. She currently serves on the Berklee College of Music Board of Trustees and is this year’s Wells School of Music Distinguished Alumni! Other donors have joined Kristine to move us closer to our goal, and we are excited to continue this campaign as we celebrate throughout the academic year. As always, we are incredibly grateful to our loyal donor community who continue to make transformational gifts that support our students and programs in the Wells School of Music. Please join us in supporting jazz at WCU for the next 100 years by clicking on the QR code below and donating to the campaign.
