Going going GONE

Wainuiomata’s rundown mall is finally being demolished after years of waiting.

A long awaited $60 million redevelopment of a rundown shopping mall got underway this week after the Hutt City Council granted Woolworths New Zealand consent to convert the indoor Wainuiomata Shopping Centre to an open-air development.

Over the years retailers slowly abandoned the centre - which was built in the 1970s and was once the hub of the community.

The development will include a 3600 square metre supermarket, retail shops, and childcare and medical centres.

Some of the eco-design features will included the latest refrigeration and EV charging stations.

“News of progress on the mall is being positively received by the community and including both our team and customers,” Matt Grainger, Countdown’s Head of Property says.

“The new store will have an in-store Countdown Pharmacy, an expansive fresh produce department, an instore bakery, dedicated health food section and other features which we are sure customers will appreciate.

Online shopping will also be catered for,” he says.

Evelyn and Bill Feeley had a meeting that only romance movies could dream of.

The dream happens at the wedding of Evelyn's sister to Pat O'Flanagan.

Evelyn was the bridesmaid and Pat's best man was not able to attend the wedding so he asked Bill to fill in as his best man.

Bill was not a person to wait around and the following week he asked Evelyn to marry him they were then to be soon husband and wife.

Now they are celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends on the second of July.

They are both proud Scottish natives Bill from Paisley and Evelyn Glasgow, the couple immigrated to

New Zealand in the 1960s.

Initially, their life begins living in Lyall Bay for 12 years in new state flats then moved to a new home in Wainuiomata living there for 42 years.

Many locals may recognize them in the community from the RSA the bowls and bingo. They also met many friends and people in the community down at the mall.

They were both grafters when it came to working Evelyn being a seamstress working at the House of Raymond and Lewis Curtains, and as the manager at the $2 shop in Queens Street.

Bill worked as a wharfie for 53 years and then after that continued to tie up boats until he turned 75yrs old.

The couple have three daughters Lorraine, Debra, and Shirley.

They have five grandchildren one great-grandson and another wee baby on the way.

Deb's memories were of the family dinners that they had together, Bill would make most evening meals nearly every night. Many of the extended family would turn up weekly and in the weekend having lots of Scottish humour, and there is a lot of love and laughter to this day.

Lorraine's memories of her mum and dad were dancing around the dinner table listening to there favorite singer Matt Munro and many other crooners that they enjoyed listening too. They still sit in their chairs and hold their hands to this day.

Evelyn and Bill live now in the Bob Scott Retirement Village and their secret to their marriage is love and all of their family around them.

Lynda Lincoln loves children and has been working with them since she was young.

“I’ve worked with them all my life,” she says.

“I grew up around young kids.

Her mother, Shirley Lincoln, was a preschool teacher and so Lynda naturally followed in her footsteps.

Now the new manager of Barnardo’s Early Learning Centre, it feels as if she is returning home.

“It’s great to come back to the community I’ve been in all my life.”

Over her time as an early childhood educator, she has enjoyed many aspects but the children have always been the best part.

“I’ve always enjoyed being with children and seeing their learning journey as they grow.

“And they’re fun.”

Lynda has always been drawn to teaching but she has more recently been drawn back to the community for her final years of work.

“I felt it was time to come back.

“Like her mother, Lynda set up an early childhood centre in Naenae seven years ago.

“I’ve just always been drawn to teaching. Even when I tried something else.”

There are now three generations now working in childcare as Lynda’s own daughter follows in her footsteps.

“I get a lot of energy from being around kids. It’s a good way to keep fit,” she laughs

“Everyone is happy and positive.

The kids do feel a sense of belonging here like it’s their centre too.”

Barnardo’s will be holding an open day on Monday, June 29, from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Pop-up to bring Queen Street to life again To celebrate getting to Level 1, Love Wainuiomata will be restarting their weekly “Queen St Friday Play” pop-up events on Queen Street from 3.00pm to 4.30pm to match winter.

“We really enjoy teaming up with Healthy Families and Wainuiomata Community Hub for these and put out sports and play gear,

including bikes, trikes, scooters and ramps so kids can ride on Anzac Way which we close to traffic.”

Shared Pathway celebrates first birthday

What’s Cooking... in Spiced Carrot and Lentil Soup

The Te Hikoi Ararewa Shared Pathway celebrated its official first birthday last Friday.

The pathway was 20 years in the making, from the initial vision to finally building. It was made in partnership between Hutt City Council, NZTA and the Government.

While the hill was walked by many locals for many years prior, it was the risk of walking so close to busy traffic on an unsafe track that turned several otherwise keen walkers off.

The path is a four-metre wide off-road sealed path for pedestrians and cyclists, with steel barriers protecting walkers from the busy traffic. The walk showcases

the beauty of Wainuiomata.

Pukeatua Bridge, which connects walking and cycling tracks that run along Lower Hutt's eastern hills and stops people from crossing the road in 80kmh traffic, was opened in 2015.

Isabel Bristow and Maya Christiansen were excited to be walking the new Shared Pathway last year during it's official opening celebration.

Kia ora to the Community of Wainuiomata & Hutt Valley

Ingredients: • 2 tsp cumin seeds • pinch chilli flakes • 2 tbsp olive oil • 600g carrots, washed and coarsely grated (no need to peel) • 140g split red lentils • 1l hot vegetable stock (from a cube is fine) • 125ml milk • plain yogurt and naan bread, to serve

1. Heat a large saucepan and dry-fry 2 tsp cumin seeds

and a pinch of chilli flakes for 1 min, or until they start to jump around the pan and release their aromas.

2. Scoop out about half with a spoon and set aside. Add 2

tbsp olive oil, 600g coarsely grated carrots, 140g split red lentils, 1l hot vegetable stock and 125ml milk to the pan and bring to the boil.

3. Simmer for 15 mins until the lentils have swollen and softened.

4. Whizz the soup with a stick blender or in a food

processor until smooth (or leave it chunky if you prefer).

5. Season to taste and

Grapes need a cool winter while they are dormant and a warm/hot summer when in foliage and producing fruit. Different types of grape have different temperature needs, so one should try and find a vine type that is suitable for their climate.

gardening this week Looking after your grapes: By Wally Richards A recent email from a reader asked: Now that the end of the grape season is over, I wondered if you might consider writing an article about pruning, disease, and general care of the vines and getting ready for next year.

My grapes are 20 years old and normally they are a beautiful black grape with a delicious flavour.

In the past few years they have formed lovely branches but as they develop, some fruit matures well while the others turn into raisins, spoiling a perfect bunch.

I’ve sprayed with Neem oil, copper and even one dose of condies crystals.

This year has been a disaster - the fully matured grapes have not turned black and have not got their usual nice flavour, while the undeveloped tiny grapes [all on the one bunch] have turned black and have their delicious flavour.

The vine is against a garage wall, plenty of sun and well drained soil.

What is going on ? l live at Manakau, so the climate or area should not be an issue. l have considered cutting the vine right back to the original trunk, but l am not sure if this is a good idea.

My reply: I always envy those gardens that have a large rambling grape vine, years old producing an abundance of juicy grapes every year.

I have yet to achieve that goal and know that the reason is wrong growing conditions.

I have over the years purchased vines, taken cuttings from vines I would die

for, and even grown seedless grapes from seeds.

I even relocated one vine several times over a number of years to different spots in the garden and it ended up in a container. The end result, after about 10 years, was only the odd grape to eat it finally died, likely from confusion!

Different types of grape have different temperature needs, so one should try and find a vine type that is suitable for their climate.

Early autumn frosts can wipe out a crop and late spring frosts can damage new shoots.

A mild summer will affect a crop by the fruit not ripening properly, with the lack of sugars to sweeten the fruit.

Humid summers will cause diseases and thus loss of the crop.

With our changing climate a vine that was once a great producer, facing a cold winter followed by a hot, dry summer, becomes a poor producer because of the climate.

This can also be part of the reason of our reader’s problem, with humid conditions or a milder summer needing a better spray program to overcome the diseases.

Grapes are best grown on free draining soils of low fertility. Feed your grape and you are likely to have a great canopy of foliage at the expense of the fruit.

If grapes are not pruned each year,

they develop many unproductive shoots and soon become a tangled mess of leaves and stems. At least 90 per cent of the previous season’s growth must be removed each winter.

There are two main pests of grapes: a small aphid that feeds on the roots and mealy bugs.

Using Neem Tree granules in the root zone and Super Neem Oil sprays in the foliage will help control these pests.

Diseases include powdery mildew which you can use baking soda and Raingard to prevent, or you will find the Super Neem Oil keeps powdery mildew under control.

A monthly spray of Perkfection Supa will help control downy mildew, and can be added to the baking soda spray.

Botrytis is a grey mould that is prevalent in warm, damp conditions, and rots bunches of grapes. Growers reduce the risk of botrytis by plucking leaves around the berries, allowing air to circulate.

Also after the fruit has set you should shake the vine vigorously to remove the spent flowers at the base of the fruit. Left on, these will rot and cause rotting of the fruit.

Liquid sulphur is the best control for botrytis-infected grapes, but should not be used if Super Neem Oil was used recently. Regular sprays of Condys Crystals can also help.

New season grape plants will be available about now, so check with your local garden centre to see what varieties they can provide.

Super Rugby revels in its comeback Super Rugby really hit the spot over the weekend.

Two entertaining games in front of engaged and energetic crowds made for compelling viewing.

There were a couple of things going in favour of the matches.

The Sunday afternoon game is a great idea.

Of course, it’s always been an inspired idea cast aside for modern-day revenue gathering.

It was a sell-out at Eden Park

as the Blues triumphed over the Hurricanes.

There had not been such a large crowd at the Auckland venue for a game of Super Rugby since 2005.

The other major thing going for both games was the absence of games prior to it.

Rugby was badly overexposed pre-Coronavirus and now after weeks of hardship, rugby had a new-found appreciation to it.

Like a good girlfriend who

goes away for a while, absence has made the heart grow fonder for New Zealand rugby fans.

Grant Robertson’s speech prior to the first game in Dunedin was unnecessary and a little cringeworthy.

The fact rugby is being played at all should be a sign of a job well done but the Minister for Sport took his opportunity to spell out the success with a microphone in hand.

It will be interesting to see

if the crowds persist as games become more common but two games a weekend certainly won’t create jaded fans so that’s a positive.

Sky TV will have the ultimate say if afternoon rugby continues after this season but certainly the fans have voted with their feet and hopefully with their remotes as well.

The games themselves were played at a fast pace and a reasonable skill level considering

the layoff.

As a television spectacle, a loud crowd really boosts the product.

I’m sure it would make it better for the players too who get the shot of adrenaline you just can’t get playing in front of empty seats or cardboard cut-outs like the NRL. Positive signs that a little time apart may have stoked the passion back to new highs for New Zealand rugby fans.

Victoria University clarifies entry requirements for 2021 Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington has removed grade entry requirements for students wanting to study at the University in 2021.

The move, agreed by the University Council today, means any student who successfully completes University Entrance (UE) will be guaranteed entry to undergraduate study if they apply. Previously

students needed a rank score in NCEA of 150 for undergraduate degree-level entry, and 180 points for entry to the Bachelor of Architectural Studies and Bachelor of Building Science.

“We recognise that 2020 is an extraordinary year and that many secondary students have faced significant disruption to their learning this year and that they are

seeking clarity and assurances. This move has been made as part of the University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Chancellor Neil Paviour-Smith.

Provost Professor Wendy Larner says the University will also be working more closely with secondary schools this year to ensure students and teachers know what the University requirements are and

Wally waltzing across the ditch The saying goes ‘a Johnsonville Rugby Football club man is blue and blue, right through’ and Wally Smith exemplifies that.

The life member and former chairman will head for Melbourne to spend more time with his grandchildren after almost 40 years of service.

The club is hosting a farewell for him on Saturday.

“I never thought we’d do it but it will be good,” he says of the move.

“We were supposed to be over there on April 22 but we’re still here and hoping to be gone by July 2.

While he never laced up a pair of boots for Johnsonville, he spent his time in the administration of the club, ensuring it’s financial viability while also managing various teams throughout the grades.

“Back in 1981, I was advised to go down and watch a match between Johnsonville and Onslow - ‘The Battle of the Villages’ as it was called and I’ve been involved ever since.”

Wally says he was happiest doing the grunt work off the field.

“I’d class myself more as an administrator rather than a spokesperson.

“It was nice to be involved in a sports club.

“In 1985 I put my name forward for the committee and 10 minutes after the meeting ended I was chairman.

“I was chairman for four-anda-half years and without trying to push my own barrow I really feel we were able to turn the club around and got a lot of major sponsors.”

Wally then had three years as Club Manager in a paid role in the early 90s.

He then had a stint helping coach the Newlands first XV amongst other things before managing a host of teams for the next decade.

“I’m going to miss the club, ” he says.

“It’s been a big part of my life.

“A lot of players love coming to Johnsonville because we always have a good spirit in the club,” he says.

“We’ve had our ups and downs and some say we should have amalgamated but we are hanging in there.”

He said seeing players come through the grades was most satisfying.
