Tute’s new role Continued from page 1 Five years into her teaching career Tute says to be closer to family her husband and growing family decided to move to Wainuiomata and in 2007 she started working as a classroom teacher at Wainuiomata Primary and became a team leader.

“I left the school in 2012 and took on a role as an itinerant teacher for the RTLB service, a resource teacher learning and behaviour unit the first port

of call for a schools learning support.”

“I was with the service for three years and the role of DP came up at Wainuiomata Primary and I came back. I knew that I was always going to come back to a school because I realised my strength was really being part of the community and establishing good systems,” she says.

“I found the whole thing of going from school to school working on intervention a little

bit difficult because I am more a person who thinks of the big picture and I realised it was a real strength of mine.”

Heading back to Wainuiomata Primary in 2015 Tute felt she would be well suited to a principal role.

“It was something I had thought of for a while and it is not an easy role to do when your kids are young so I waited and now that my kids are older I thought I could do this job and it was the

right time,” she says.

Tute decribes her new role at Arakura as “super invigorating and super frightening.”

“Being deputy principal is quite a comfy position to be in because you can do all the amazing things and have all the visions and develop all kinds of things but you know the buck stops with the boss not you.”

“It dosen’t mean I make all the decisions but it does mean the buck falls with you,” Tute says.

Kokiri Marae Waka Ama underway Kokiri Marae Tai Patu Waka Ama Club is back on the water after a long break at a new location at Whiorau Reserve, Lowry Bay, Seaview.

A day for all to come and have a go was held over the weekend and with numbers building the club has already had a team competing at the recently held nationals.

Kokiri Marae trustee Star Olsen says the club wants to encourage everyone to get out on the water and have a go.

“There are those who want to get out and have a paddle with whanau and that is great and then we have those who want to be competitive and we have recently had our first team represent the club for many years at the nationals in the short

sprint which was pretty significant for us,” he says.

In the shelter of Lowry Bay the area provides plenty of opportunities with the only wind to make the waters choppy the northwester.

“We were the first original Marae based club and we all have a passion for it and now we really want to grow the numbers,” he says.

He says they are about to start doing sessions with Wainuiomata High School with the hopes of heading to the secondary school regional races.

Coach for the college team John Kingi says the school has enough for two crews and with a bit of training he has high hopes for them.

Early Earthquake Warning System Scientists are calling on New Zealanders to become citizen seismologists to help determine whether a low-cost community-based earthquake early warning system is feasible in New Zealand.

A project, co-funded by EQC and Massey University, has enabled a group of scientists, led by the Joint Centre for Disaster Research at Massey University, to source a number of low-cost seismometers and work with a number of communities to see if they would be willing to become part of a research project aiming to trial an earthquake early warning sensor network.

“At present, there is no earthquake early warning system in New Zealand. In this research project, we want to explore the feasibility of developing an early warning system

for earthquakes informed by lowcost internet-based seismometers.

The sensors would be installed in community owned buildings to generate appropriate warning solutions for members of the community,” says lead researcher Raj Prasanna from Massey University.

After earlier meetings at Massey University in Wellington, Orewa and Nelson, the research team last week brainstormed with residents in Lower Hutt. The residents expressed their thoughts and concerns on owning a private seismometer as part of a possible future network of low-cost seismic sensors that could issue earthquake early warnings.

“Ideally, the sensors hosted by the citizen seismologists would be configured as a network of sensors to test different detection

algorithms. The data gathered from the community will help us explore the feasibility of generating warnings using these low-cost sensors. The warning may only be 10 seconds, but it will give people time to take the safety action of “drop, cover, and hold.” says Prasanna.

The work builds on other EQC research by Dr Julia Becker from Joint Centre for Disaster Research at Massey University, who last year discovered that there is strong interest among New Zealand residents, businesses and agencies in an early warning system for earthquakes.

Wainuiomata women create Sauerkraut With the resumption of Wainuiomata Womens Group last week, the focus was making sauerkraut as a cheap, simple, yet healthy addition to the diet.

With cabbages relatively easy to grow basic sauerkraut requires only two ingredients, cabbage and salt.

One of the groups facilitators Gaylene Pluck demonstrated just how simple the process of making the fermented product is and got busy bashing cabage leaves sprinkled with salt to a pulp in preparation for it to go into a jar.

Gaylene warned once it is in the jar and weighted down it will give off some gases and they can bubble and blow the jar apart.

“So it is important in the first five to ten days to burp the jar and make sure there is a weight on top of the jars contents and everything is submerged in the juices,” she says.

“After two to three weeks in

summer and four to six weeks in winter it will be sauerkraut.”

Sauerkraut is said to be incredibly nutritious and healthy.

It provides probiotics and vitamin K2, which are known for their health benefits, and many other nutrients. Eating sauerkraut may help you strengthen your immune system, improve your digestion, reduce your risk of certain diseases, and even lose weight.

One of the very slight disadvantages of consuming a large amount of sauerkraut is it may lead to bloating and flatulence due to the trisaccharide raffinose, which the human small intestine cannot break down. This does not negatively affect long-term health, although it might be uncomfortable.

Tute Porter-Samuels Teacher, mum and wife.  What food do you crave most often?

I can’t go a day without coffee or chocolate  When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better?

Walk in the fresh air.  What’s one thing on your bucket list?

One of the things I would really like to do is a walk the Camino de Santiago trail. I saw a movie about it and thought I would love to do it before I am 50.  Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life?

That’s a big question and I draw from so many different people but I would have to say my mum because I know she sacrificed a lot coming here from Tonga and life wasn’t easy in those days in the 70’s on the back of the dawn raids. All of her sacrifice was so my brothers and I could have a better life in New Zealand.  What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

My favourite place is in Wanaka I have always

loved the dawn crispiness in the air and the mountains, it would be one of my favourite places in New Zealand.

 What was the last photo you took?

Was at dawn at the top of Wainuiomata hill at 6:15 of the rain.  What thing do you really wish you could buy right now?

A water cooler for the staff.  What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made?

Would have to be shoes.  Favourite programme currently watching?

With my teenagers we have just been watching the Fast and the Furious.

And the objectifying of women on that is just so wrong.

I prefer reading.  If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

In New Zealand I would stay here and wouldn’t go anywhere.

Improving your gardens and plants: By Wally Richards I received an email during the week from a gardener that was having problems with a rose and found a solution. The email read: Hi There.

I just wanted to let you know how amazing your Magic Botanical Liquid is. I’ve had a rose that I planted in August that had no new growth.

I spoke to a great man in Mitre 10 Wanganui and he recommended your product to me. I’ve used it in all my roses along with my vegetable gardens and I’m blown away with the performance. I’ve attached a photo of the rose and I’m so happy with it now.

Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) is Humate and Fulvic acid which many commercial growers use in either liquid or powder form to improve their crops.

It does make the world of difference by an occasional soil drench and regular sprays over the foliage (once or twice a month).

Compatible with other garden sprays it’s a tonic, growth enhancer and soil conditioner.

Here is a list of what it does: - Aids and speeds up germination of seeds.

- Helps to release locked up fertilisers from past applications especially phosphates.

- Helps increase availability of chemical fertilisers and organic foods for plants.

- Helps reduce many common plant disease problems.

- Helps clean up many toxic compounds, chemicals and oil spills in soil.

- Helps to establish plants in areas where they can’t or struggle to establish.

- Stimulates growth of soil microorganisms.

- Increases root respiration and formation.

- Increases availability of micro nutrients.

- Can increase permeability of plant membranes, which will enhance nutrient uptake.

- Increases vitamin content of plants.

- Improves seed germination.

- Accelerates root development.

- Stimulates plant enzymes.

A gardener wrote to gardening columnist, Wally Richards, to say his Magic Botanical Liquid worked well on her roses and vegetable gardens.

- Contains a number of trace elements such as Si, Mg, S, Mn and more.

- Increases ability for photosynthesis.

- Contains silica which strengthens cell walls, helps block disease and regulates cell temperature which increases drought and frost tolerance.

- Increase pH buffering properties of soil.

- Retains and releases water soluble fertilisers for plants when needed.

- Increases soil aeration.

- Improves soil structure.

- Makes soil more friable.

- Has a capacity to detoxify chemical residues and heavy metals.

- A powerful, natural chelating agent.

- Improves taste and shelf-life.

Fulvic acid can promote prolonged production, as it tends to delay the aging process. Fulvic acid increases the metabolism of proteins.

Used at the rates of 20ml per litre as a soil drench as required and 10ml per litre as a foliage spray once or twice a month.

A must for roses, tomatoes and all vegetable and fruit crops. Green keepers are using it for better turf so onto the lawn for better healthier lawns.

A very interesting product for the enhancement of your gardens and plants.

I have been surprised that by this time of the year the sales of tomato food usually drops off but has not this year.

I have put this down to gardeners now picking ripe tomatoes do not bother to keep feeding the plants.

This is not a good thing as if tomato plants are kept being feed they will keep on growing and producing till winter takes them out.

If they in a glasshouse or similarly sheltered against winter chills and frosts they can keep on slowly producing as long as you do not over water them during winter.

Capsicums and chili plants in containers in a glasshouse will not only winter through but be good for several seasons which means you get away to a great start in the spring with a mature plant that has already produced for you.

The secret is to keep the growing medium on the dry side so the plants will not suffer with the cold.

They still need a little drink every few days and this should only be done in the morning so there is a chance it will be fairly dry again before the cold of the night.

A spray of Frost Protection, Vaporgard will also help with the cold of winter and prevent you been caught out with an unexpected frost.

Metlink kids competition Metlink is calling on tamariki across Wellington region to try their hand at designing a bus wrapping as part of this year’s Brendan Foot Supersite (BFS) Round the Bays.

Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher says, “For the first time ever, we’re hosting a Metlink activity tent for the community at the Finishers’ Festival after the race, so we wanted to do something really unique and fun for whanau. We’re giving one lucky winner the chance to see their very own bus driving around the region.”

The competition will take the form of a colouring contest open to children aged 12 or younger

who live in Wellington region.

Kids are encouraged to use their imaginations, with extra points awarded to entries that incorporate themes of te taiao (the natural environment) and sustainability.

To take part in the competition, tamariki can visit Metlink’s tent at the Finishers’ Festival in Kilbirnie Park on 21 February, or download the colouring-in sheet and follow the instructions for submissions.

The winner and their whanau will be invited to witness the unveiling of their specially designed bus before it hits Wellington’s streets.

Greater Wellington Councillor and Chair of the Transport Committee Roger Blakeley is looking

forward to being part of the group of councillors who will choose the winning design that will go on to become a bus wrapping.

“We councillors are no strangers to making tough choices together, but I anticipate this decision will be particularly contentious as everyone fights to see their favourite artwork splashed across a bus,” says Cr Blakeley.

Mr Gallacher also reminds BFS Round the Bays participants of all ages that public transport will be free across the entire network (bus, train, and harbour ferry) on race day, in an effort to curb carbon emissions and ease traffic as thousands make their way into the city.

Having that G.O.A.T conversation Individual achievements in team sports is always a hot-button topic.

Tom Brady became the most celebrated American football player of all time last week when his Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed the Super Bowl over the favouredKansas City Chiefs.

The win gave the 43-year-old his seventh championship ring in 10 Super Bowl attempts.

Even more importantly, it proved Brady could win outside of the

New England Patriots with whom he won his previous six.

While many are now calling him the G.O.A.T (greatest of all time), it’s challenging to say in team sports to quantify who sits atop such a list.

Ice hockey has Wayne Gretzky and he is universally considered the best to ever lace up a pair of skates.

Basketball has Michael Jordan with his six NBA titles in the

1990s leading the way.

Modern day fans argue LeBron James, but he is still a couple of titles shy of Jordan but is still playing.

Baseball suffers the same problem as football in that players play different positions and excel.

Is the best player ever a pitcher or a batter? Play in-field or out-field.

Quarter back is the most important position in American football but as last week’s Super Bowl

showed, if your defensive line fails to protect you, then things get tricky.

Brady certainly needed the players around him to help and he only threw for 200 yards, a mediocre number by modern standards.

But, he won and so the comparisons and proclamations began in ernest.

While cricket has Don Bradman and football has Pele, often people making the judgements suffer

from a recency bias.

Players you saw in your childhood, for example seem to have their feats grow in legend each time you tell their triumphs.

Much like beauty, the best of all time is often in the eye of the beholder.

Brady the best ever? Sure, a case can be made but so can a case against.

That is what makes sport so fun after all.

First eleven victory over Karori

Wainuiomata’s first eleven cricket team made it 2 timed cricket wins in a row with a 3 wicket win over Karori at Karori Park on Saturday. Turning up to a damaged pitch wasn’t a highlight but winning the toss and getting to bowl first made the Wainui bowlers lick their lips. As expected, batting was difficult and Wainui applied pressure from the first ball and bowled consistently in getting all 10 wickets for 110 runs in 40 overs. Playing his 150th game for Wainui firsts, Dan Hewitt had best figures of 3 for 25. In reply, after a solid start, Wainui soon found themselves in trouble at 64 for 6 but a match winning partnership of 42 between opening batter Jason Taylor and Jordan Rangikauhata got Wainui home. The win now puts Wainui 3rd on the table and within touching distance of the top with 5 rounds to play Wainui second eleven continued their unbeaten season with an unlikely win against Onslow.

After Wainui achieved first innings points last week, Onslow were determined to bat as much of the second day as possible and

at lunch were on track to play out a draw. Then stepped up leg spinner Chris Ingram who turned the game around with 5 for 57, meaning Wainui had to chase 170 to win in approx. 30 overs. Nick Neary batted superbly for 70 and was backed up well by Michael Stonyer with 42 to get Wainui home 15mins before close of play and with 4 wickets in hand. A great win for the team.

Wainui 40 over team had a win over Easts on Bryan Heath #1.

Bowling first, Wainui spinner and new Dad, Hewson Whiting ripped through Easts with 6 for 25. Hewson didn’t stop there with 25 not out with the bat as Wainui easily chased down the total with 6 wickets in hand.

Team Brownie in the T20 grade were not able to reach Stokes Valleys 148, getting 117 in reply.

For Wainui, Cory was the best of the bowlers with 2 for 26 and with the bat Rob top scored with 35.

Team D&B in the T20 grade went down to Petone Riverside by 6 wickets after setting 155 in their first innings.
