Basic Life Support (BLS)

Licensed Washington dentists must complete a one-time CE requirement regarding best practices in the prescribing of opioids and DQAC’s opioid prescribing rules. The CE must be at least three hours long.

Dental staff providing direct patient care in an in-office or outpatient setting must hold a current and valid healthcare provider basic life support (BLS) certification. Certification is good for two years.

Soft tissue such as the tongue, lips and cheeks, tonsils and adenoids influences growth. Certain habits and airway-related issues such as sleep apnea and snoring can contribute to adverse skeletal changes.

In this lecture, we will discuss how soft tissue influences skeletal growth patterns. We will examine similar patterns in children and adults, and discuss how the treatment plans differ, depending on the age and skeletal maturation of the patient.

Learning Objectives: • To understand skeletal growth and development • To understand how certain adaptive behaviors like mouth breathing will adversely affect skeletal growth • To learn treatment planning strategies for both adolescents and adults

Rebecca Bockow, DDS, MSD Dr. Bockow received her DDS from UWSOD and certificates in Orthodontics and Periodontics from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where she also earned a Masters in Oral Biology in 2013. Dr. Bockow is a board certified orthodontist and periodontist. Dr. Bockow maintains a private practice in Seattle and Bellevue, limited to orthodontics and periodontics.

Endodontics Obturation Blitz: A Hands-On Workshop

The choice of obturation method is ultimately based on the dentist’s training and preference, as well as the specific anatomy of each case. However, there are attributes and limitations of each technique. This workshop will cover contemporary products and techniques available for obturating root canal systems, including variations of warm vertical condensation, carrier-based obturation, and obturation using bioceramic sealer and a single gutta-percha cone. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique will be discussed, as well as how to perform each obturation method. Participants will use simulation canals and extracted teeth to practice using different techniques and materials for filling root canals.

In addition, the increased prevalence of peri-implant disease is receiving recent attention showing it is difficult to manage. This course will provide the latest evidence-based information on patient assessment for successful implant treatment. The program will present the updates on the definition and etiology of peri-implantitis from the American Academy of Periodontology’s 2018 consensus meeting, along with criteria for diagnosis and treatment of peri-implant diseases with an emphasis on a team/interdisciplinary approach to treatment.

Did you know that more than 20% of hospital admissions are due to adverse drug reactions? Dentists prescribe less than 10% of all available drugs, but your patients may be taking others from the 90% with which you are not familiar. Since polypharmacy is the norm, especially in the over 65-year-old population, this course should be considered essential to every practice setting today. Do you have patients who are already on one prescription medication before they come to your office? How about four prescription medications?

Did you know that the likelihood of a drug interaction in a patient on five medications is greater than 50%? What if you are the prescriber who writes that fifth prescription? With so many new medications, herbal products, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements available on the market, how can you be confident that the prescription you write is compatible with what your patient is currently taking? Classification of diseases give the practitioner a framework to help diagnose and treat disease appropriately. The 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions was published in 2018, providing a comprehensive update to the 1999 Classifications.

This course will provide a synopsis of the updates and the evidence that led to the changes. The course will address methods of biofilm removal, the cornerstone of periodontal therapy, with an emphasis on application of air polishing technology and techniques. Dr. Daubert has done clinical research on biofilm removal comparing subgingival air polishing to other methods of biofilm removal. She has also participated in a consensus conference to provide guidelines for dental professionals on the use of air polishing. She will present both clinical recommendations and evidence to support the recommendations.

Not all patients that need or require surgical periodontal care are candidates for this form of therapy. A variety of factors preclude them from receiving or pursuing surgery to correct their problems. This population of patients may benefit from a variety of chemotherapeutic pharmacologic agents currently available to affect host modulation and address their disease.

This program will explore the rationale and appropriate usage of pharmacologic agents used as adjuncts to traditional modes of periodontal therapy as well as DNA culturing to assist your selection of medications.

Scientific American recently called the U.S. suicide rate “nothing short of an epidemic,” with one life lost every 11.7 minutes. Washington’s suicide rate is 11 percent higher than the national average, with almost 1,300 suicide deaths in 2017, twice the number of lives lost to opioid overdose and also to traffic fatalities in the same year. Dental professionals are at higher risk for suicide, and often see patients that may be at risk. This three-hour training has been prepared with the dental professional in mind to help increase awareness of and confidence to help prevent suicide. This has been approved by the Washington State Department of Health, and meets the state’s requirement to take a three-hour suicide awareness course required for all health care professionals including dentists.

This is that program. In 2010, enough opioids were sold to medicate each American adult at a dose of 5mg of hydrocodone every four hours for one month.

You do not want to be part of this problem. Remember the Spiderman Principle that, “with great power there must also come – great responsibility.” And what about all of those new antibiotics you keep hearing about? Are they really the latest and greatest? Are there really new guidelines when it comes to antibiotic prophylaxis? This interactive program looks at the appropriate prescribing of analgesics and antibiotics with a particular focus on the dental realm. Case studies will augment the delivery of key points and a problem-based learning approach is encouraged so that each participant’s questions are addressed.

Dr. Paul Chung Endocrown Case Selection, Technique, and Materials

The traditional treatment modality for restoring endodontically treated molars with extensive coronal structural loss has been post, core, and crown for decades.

Advances in adhesive dentistry and CADCAM technology has made the endocrown an effective alternative in restoring compromised teeth. We will discuss case selection, analyze different techniques in preparation and fabrication, and compare restorative materials and adhesives.

Dr. Ross Emerick Tooth-Implant Fixed Partial Denture: Is There Any Indication?

Tooth-Implant Fixed Partial (TIFP) Dentures are rarely considered as a viable treatment option in restoring function in the partially edentulous. Is there any clinical presentation where this should be considered, or even favored? Depending on patient preferences and the clinical situation, the answer may be yes. This table clinic will discuss what is necessary to make this restoration a success: (1) tooth selection and span of FPD, (2) implant placement, (3) rigidity of tooth to implant connection, (4) cement selection and FPD retention, and (5) framework and veneering.

Dr. William Frei Biologic Shaping: A Conservative and Predictable Alternative to Traditional Crown Lengthening

In order to ensure complete caries removal and maintain appropriate biologic width, dental practitioners must often employ a crown lengthening technique which requires the removal of tooth-supporting bone. Often times, the teeth involved are periodontally compromised or contain anatomical irregularities, resulting in further periodontal instability and a fading prognosis. This table clinic will present a more conservative and predictable alternative 42

to traditional crown lengthening- Biologic Shaping. This technique involves a circumferential removal of all root surface irregularities as well as existing cementoenamel junctions (CEJs) and existing margins. Minor osseous contouring is involved when indicated to improve bony architecture. The result is perfectly contoured and smooth root surfaces and a re-establishment of supragingival and easily cleansable margins.

Dr. Patrick Huebner The Etiology, Diagnosis, and Multidisciplinary Management of Adolescent Impacted Maxillary Canines

Maxillary canines are the most commonly impacted teeth after third molars and occur in approximately 2% of individuals.

They can occur labially as well as palatally and are found twice as common in females. While treatment of impacted maxillary canines remains a challenge to clinicians today, it is important to diagnose and intervene early to refrain from more complex treatment in the permanent dentition. This table clinic will discuss the etiology and diagnosis of maxillary impacted canines, as well as surgical and orthodontic treatment options.

The goal is to provide the general dentist with the necessary understanding to develop an optimal treatment plan when such a patient presents for their care.

Dr. Andrew Kary A Clinical Algorithm for Diagnosis of Orofacial Pain

When a patient presents to the dental clinic in pain, the dentist needs to manage the problem urgently. Fortunately, in most of the cases that we encounter, orofacial pain is readily diagnosed and treated. However, sometimes the etiology is unclear and the underlying condition is refractory to our attempts at empiric therapy. In such cases an appropriate course of treatment can be selected by applying a systematic approach to history and physical examination. This table clinic provides a clinical algorithm for differential diagnosis of orofacial pain.

Dr. Carsen McDaniel The Socket Shield Technique: A Proposed Defense Against Alveolar Ridge Resorption Post extraction maintenance of alveolar bone height and width is a major concern when replacing anterior teeth.

Research shows that 1 year after extraction, alveolar bone is reduced by about 4 mm in the vertical dimension and 3.6 mm in the horizontal dimension. Such alveolar ridge reduction compromises the esthetic outcome of either fixed dental prosthesis’ or single tooth implant restorations. This table clinic presents the socket shield technique; one option for preserving alveolar ridge dimensions following the extraction of anterior teeth. This technique leaves a residual “shield� of buccal tooth structure within the extraction socket which maintains ridge dimension at the site of an FDP pontic or single tooth implant. Biological rationale, surgical technique, clinical results and case presentation of the socket shielding technique will all be discussed.

Dr. Ethan Tindall Periodontal Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics for the Partially Impacted Canine Periodontal Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) is defined as a clinical procedure that combines selective alveolar corticotomy, particulate bone grafting, and the application of orthodontic forces. This more recent surgical orthodontic technique was introduced by Wilcko et al. and involves a pattern of bone healing known as regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) to shorten treatment time, increase alveolar bone width, and increase post treatment stability. This table clinic focuses on how PAOO can specifically be used to help the movement of ankylosed canines into a more ideal position.

Dr. Jacob Woodward Computer Guided Implant Surgery

Implant placement and positioning is critical for a long lasting, functional implant. Proper planning with computer assistance can help the Dentist to ideally place implants around adjacent teeth and vital structures in addition to optimizing the final restoration. This table clinic will review the importance of proper implant placement and positioning.

It will also review the different methods for using computer aided design for making a surgical guide for implant placement. Finally, it will look at the benefits and drawbacks of using computer assisted guides.
