Opioid Prescribing Pg. 44

Beginning August 1, 2020, licensed Washington dentists and hygienists must complete a one-time training for suicide assessment that includes screening, referral, and imminent harm via lethal means elements.

The training must be at least three hours long.

Licensed Washington dentists who prescribe opioids must complete a one-time CE requirement regarding best practices in the prescribing of opioids and DQAC’s opioid prescribing rules. The CE must be at least three hours long.

Dr. Jesse Adamson Minimally Invasive Endodontics — Teeth Treated to Last Endodontically treated teeth lose their structural integrity during the process of caries removal, access preparation, and shaping. But what if we could limit the extent of tooth structure removed during endodontic treatment? After all, the more tooth structure remaining, the better chance of survival of the tooth. The goal of minimally invasive endodontics is to create smaller access preparations, smaller apical preparations, and as a result, conserve as much tooth structure as possible. Minimally invasive principles in endodontics may increase the longevity of teeth, and may change the way we evaluate and restore endodontically treated teeth as practitioners.

Dr. Ryan Beetham Sticky Bone: A Guided Bone Regeneration Technique to Combat Alveolar Ridge Deficiencies Alveolar ridge deficiencies compromise a dentist’s ability to place dental implants surrounded by an adequate volume of bone. Traditional treatment modalities to increase alveolar ridge defects include block grafts and ridge splits. Sticky bone is a graft material that can lead to a similar amount of bone generation compared to the aforementioned treatments, but is less invasive and offers accelerated tissue healing. Sticky bone utilizes growth factors in platelet rich fibrin (PRF) to do all this and more. Indications for use, the preparation technique, and case studies will all be discussed at this table clinic.

Dr. Allison Bertoni Bioclear Method — A New Technique for Restorative Dentistry Exploring the Bioclear technique and its differences to traditional composite resin bonding. What are its indications for use and its advantages and disadvantages over the traditional restorative method? Dr. Alan George Investigating the Effects of “Vaping” and Oral Health Vaping has become a popular alternative to smoking and is very common among adolescents. It has become a public health concern and even caught the attention of congress. There have been hospitalizations connected to vaping in 46 states, in fact, 10 deaths have been linked to E- Cigarettes via autopsy. There is a trend of states banning these products for good reason. What are the short and long term effects of vaping on the oral tissues? How do these effects compare to the mountains of evidence stacked against smoking as a risk factor for periodontitis.

How should we be educating our patients?

Ultimately, what factors should we consider to diagnose disease processes and how does this new habit affect case selection.

Dr. Peter Hwang Successful Restoration After Selective Removal of Carious Lesions The traditional method of successful restoration suggests complete removal of cariogenic biomass. However, some studies indicate that even with a remaining infected tissue, cariogenic process can be arrested if restoration is done correctly under the right condition. This conservative approach, depending on cases, will offer patients more favorable treatment plan as to endodontic treatment and fixed prosthesis restoration, which are very likely to occur when complete caries removal leads to pulpal exposure.

This table clinic will discuss the surprising favorable prognosis of restoration after selective removal of carious lesions. It will also explore the most effective method for tooth preparation, liner application, and direct restoration that will arrest remaining caries, therefore avoiding the potential involvement for endodontic and prosthodontic treatments.

Dr. Samuel Lo Orthodontic Extrusion: Methods and Case Selection For Immediate Dental Implant Placement In The Esthetic Zone Immediate dental implant placement can be beneficial for both clinicians and patients by shortening treatment duration. However, it is only indicated in cases where soft and hard tissue conditions are considered ideal at the time of implant placement. The lack of these tissue conditions can be due to factors such as natural anatomical limitations — one

limiting factor being thin buccal plate for anterior cases. Therefore, immediate dental implant placement in the esthetic zone may prove to be challenging and require pre- or post-implant site enhancement procedures.

An alternative treatment method to the traditional extraction and bone graft procedure is orthodontic extrusion to improve soft and hard tissue conditions prior to implant placement. This table clinic will review recommended orthodontic methods and clinical guidelines for case selection for orthodontic extrusion for pre-implant site development.

Dr. Schuler Luce Computer Guided Treatment Applications in Endodontics Endodontics can be complicated — from diagnosis to the completion of the treatment itself. There are many variables which can cause potential complications such as: dense buccal bone in the mandible, unknown exact number and location of root canals and apical foramina, pulp chamber and canal calcification, unknown exact apex location for surgical treatment of a non- healing apical pathology — just to name a few.

The use of computer-guided endodontic surgical templates is a novel and viable technique to make potentially complicated endodontic procedures more predictable for the Endodontist and General Practitioner alike. This table clinic will review the different applications for computer-guided endodontics. It will review the benefits and drawbacks associated with the use of computer guided techniques in endodontic treatment. This table clinic will also review the methods for the fabrication of a surgical guide to be used in endodontic surgery.

Dr. Zachary White Alternative Anxioslysis — Revisiting Hypnosis in the Dental Office Clinical hypnosis has long been employed in patient care, but seems to be a dying art. Are there evidence-based indications for hypnosis in the dental office, or is it just subjective pseudoscience? n Additional Audience(s): n n Thursday, May 28 | 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM CE Credits: 3 While some think oral cancer is rare, this cancer will be newly diagnosed in about 132 new individuals each day in the U.S. alone, and a person dies from oral cancer every hour of every day. The oropharynx is one of the most common sites of head and neck cancer in the country. It is estimated that 11,000-13,000 new cases of oropharyngeal cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

The vast majority of these tumors are squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer which arises from squamous epithelial cells which line the upper aerodigestive tract. Males are more than four times as likely as females to develop oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), with an overall annual risk of 6.2 cases per 100,000 men compared to 1.4 cases per 100,000 women. Incidence in the U.S. is highest among white and black men, and lower among Hispanics, Native Americans and Asians/Pacific Islanders.

Despite decreasing rates of tobacco and alcohol use, the rates of oropharyngeal cancer have trended steadily upward for the last decade. This is primarily due to the increase in cancers related to infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV). The time lag between an oral HPV infection and the development of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer is estimated to be between 15 and 30 years. Unfortunately, at this time, the majority are found as late-stage cancers, and this accounts for the very high death rate of about 43% at five years from diagnosis (for all stages and etiologies combined at time 16

of diagnosis), and high treatment-related morbidity in survivors. This course is designed to review the pathophysiology of oropharyngeal cancer and emerging trends in cancer management.

Scientific American recently called the U.S. suicide rate “nothing short of an epidemic,” with one life lost every 11.7 minutes. Washington’s suicide rate is 11 percent higher than the national average, with almost 1,300 suicide deaths in 2017, nearly twice the number of lives lost to opioid overdose and more than we lose to traffic crashes. Dental professionals are at higher risk for suicide than other professions and often see patients who may be at risk.

This three-hour training has been prepared with the dental professional in mind to help increase awareness of and confidence to help prevent suicide.

This lecture has been approved by the Washington State Department of Health and meets the state’s requirement for all health care professionals, including dentists and hygienists, to take a three-hour suicide awareness course.

An immediate implant placement is a viable and successful strategy when implemented in the right cases. It can reduce treatment time, number of surgeries, cost, and provide patients with an efficient and comfortable treatment compared to conventional modalities.

In some cases such as the anterior, it can result in superior esthetics by preventing excess tissue remodeling. However, there are other situations in which it might not be considered, such as maligned teeth, large infections, maxillary molars, and others.

Enabled by Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and bolstered by discing, ART/ITR, SMART, and Hall crowns, “leaving caries in the tooth” with or without a restoration is now standard of care. These changes have brought about new opportunities — and new challenges!

While SDF and complementary techniques are faster and less invasive, defining a billing philosophy is tricky and monitoring outcomes is fundamentally different than for traditional restorations. Nevertheless, they can be combined: attendees will learn why SDF is Dr. Jeremy’s gateway drug to glass hybrid cements (e.g. HV-GIC). There is also an overwhelming load of marketing hype about preventives, which has caused many to miss the breakthroughs in materials that actually work, such as Xylitol for caregivers and topical Iodine. Dental bonding revolutionized the shape and content of clinical dentistry, presenting a strong and minimally invasive alternative to the traditional materials. Early research in adhesive dentistry was focused on the bond strength of composite resin to tooth, despite the fact that “sealing” is considered more of a critical issue than “retention” of composite restorations. Polymerization shrinkage of contemporary dental composites still threatens the success of all kinds of adhesive restorations, and is perhaps underestimated from simplified bonding tests.

We present a systematic approach for simulation of clinical situation in laboratory research, where the bonded restoration is Audience Key:

In addition, by real-time imaging using Sadr’s OCT imaging and analytical methodologies, we demonstrate that the integrity of a composite restoration can be visually evaluated and monitored. In this lecture, we will discuss how both soft tissue and breathing patterns influence skeletal growth. We will examine similar malocclusions in children and adults, and discuss how the treatment plans differ depending on the age and skeletal maturation of the patient. Enabled by Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and bolstered by discing, ART/ITR, SMART, and Hall crowns, “leaving caries in the tooth” with or without a restoration is now standard of care. These changes have brought about new opportunities—and new challenges!

While SDF and complementary techniques are faster and less invasive, defining a billing philosophy is tricky and monitoring outcomes is fundamentally different than for traditional restorations. Nevertheless, they can be combined: attendees will learn why SDF is Dr. Jeremy’s gateway drug to glass hybrid cements (e.g. HV-GIC). Scientific American recently called the U.S. suicide rate “nothing short of an epidemic,” with one life lost every 11.7 minutes. Washington’s suicide rate is 11 percent higher than the national average, with almost 1,300 suicide deaths in 2017, nearly twice the number of lives lost to opioid overdose and more than we lose to traffic crashes. Dental professionals are at higher risk for suicide than other professions and often see patients who may be at risk.

This three-hour training has been prepared with the dental professional in mind to help increase awareness of and confidence to help prevent suicide.

Crown lengthening procedures may involve osseous resective therapy in addition to surgical management of soft tissue.

These hard and soft tissue alterations may be provided in order to obtain a ferrule height, establish a biologic width or for improved aesthetics. This workshop will utilize a posterior typodont to provide a practical exercise in exposing a maxillary premolar with a subgingival fracture and a maxillary typodont for an aesthetic crown lengthening in the anterior sextant.

Techniques for incisions, osseous therapy and suturing will be reviewed. Indications and contraindications to surgical exposure will be discussed.

There is a plethora of bonding agents, composites and cements on the market.

This program reviews new materials and techniques in an effort to improve our treatment outcomes, from prevention to restoration, while highlighting bioactive/ biomimetic materials. We will review techniques and tools to enhance the long-term maintenance of your patients’ dentition and help prevent the need for future restoration. Questions are arising as to the longevity and appropriateness of our current resin material systems and the new generation of bonding agents. Researchers have begun to develop advanced acid-base restorative alternatives to help with the limitations we see with our restorative and luting needs. We will discuss these new materials and how they can help us produce more long-lasting bioactive and protective restorations as well as improve our bonding results.

Scientific American recently called the U.S. suicide rate “nothing short of an epidemic,” with one life lost every 11.7 minutes. Washington’s suicide rate is 11 percent higher than the national average, with almost 1,300 suicide deaths in 2017, nearly twice the number of lives lost to opioid overdose and more than we lose to traffic crashes. Dental professionals are at higher risk for suicide than other professions and often see patients who may be at risk. This three-hour training has been prepared with the dental professional in mind to help increase awareness of and confidence to help prevent suicide.

This lecture has been approved by the Washington State Department of Health and meets the state’s requirement for all health care professionals, including dentists and hygienists, to take a three-hour suicide awareness course.

From 1965 to 1985, new information allowed periodontists, dentists and hygienists to predictably control periodontitis in the majority of patients.

How do I register?

Register online at wsda.org/pndc.

It’s fast, easy, secure, and requires no extra processing fees.

Is there an option for paper registration?

We encourage all attendees to register online, as it is the fastest, easiest way to register. For an additional $25 processing fee, you may register by fax or mail. Print and complete the registration form found online at wsda.org/pndc and either fax to (206) 973-5249 or mail the form and payment to PNDC at 126 NW Canal St, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98107.

How will I receive my badge and other materials?

U.S. and Canadian attendees who register by May 18 will receive their badges and workshop/event tickets by mail prior to the conference.

Groups of more than one registrant will have all materials sent to the primary registrant’s address.

Can I register onsite?

Yes. Registration will be available at the Convention Center. Photo ID is required to register.

LECTURE SEATING

Seating for all lectures is on a first-come, first-served basis. No standing room will be available. If it is important for you to attend your first-choice lectures, please plan to arrive early.

CANCELLATIONS/ REGISTRATION CHANGES

Cancellations received on or before April 28 can be refunded minus a $15 processing fee per registrant.

Requests must be received in writing to pndc@wsda.org. There will be no refunds for cancellations made after April 28. All purchased workshops and special events are nonrefundable. For name substitutions and corrections after a badge has been received, please mail the badge along with the substitution or correction request to PNDC at 126 NW Canal Street, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98107.

CHILD ATTENDANCE POLICY

Children over the age of 12 must register for the conference. Parents are always required to monitor their children and respect their fellow attendees by exiting a room if noise or behavior becomes an issue.

Unless stated otherwise in the program, all lectures and workshops will be held at the Washington State Convention Center and partner hotels Sheraton Grand Seattle and Grand Hyatt Seattle. Special events may be held off-site.

Children under the age of 12 are not allowed in any lectures but can enter the Exhibit Hall during show hours and must always be accompanied by an adult. Strollers are not allowed in the Exhibit Hall.
