About Dr. Wes Day “Space Age Pioneer Dentist” “BAck to the Future” It was 1960 and the World’s Fair was coming to Seattle. Looking to capitalize in on the futuristic theme, WSDA members created Dr. Wes Day, S.A.P.D. to promote the 1962 Scientific Session (which later became the PNDC). Wes Day was conceived as an alliteration of WSDA, and his fancy title was Space Age Pioneer Dentist. As originally conceived and drawn by local artist Bob Hale, Dr. Wes Day had a raccoon tail hanging on his antenna and a small salmon he’d caught with his dental handpiece (see below).

A classic, reimagined In this — our 125th year of serving dentists in Washington state, and our last year of hosting the PNDC in Seattle — we thought we’d revisit the little guy, dust him off, create a backstory for him, and allow him to guide us through the transition across the pond to Bellevue. So come along with us, as we travel back through time to 1960, then ahead to the future, when we take the PNDC to Bellevue, Wash. for the very first time!

THREE WAYS TO GO FREE Volunteer and go for free Hosting is a great way to get your CDE, parking and meals free at the PNDC. It’s simple and fun, gives you an audience with some of the hottest instructors from across the country, and saves you money. We’re changing the way host duties are assigned this year, so call Craig Mathews (see his contact information below) if you’re interested in learning more about the program.

Host duties vary, but can include taking the speaker to the correct room, introducing the speaker to the audience, serving as the point person for any audio-visual needs and sharing complimentary meals in the VIP lounge with the speaker. Additionally, we may ask you to monitor the classrooms, staff the door, greet attendees (and make sure they have the proper credentials to attend), and work to maximize the room space and seating. Following the presentation, hosts scan membership cards for WSDA member attendees and hand out CDE verification forms.

How do I register?

Can I register on-site?

The easiest way is to register online. Last year, more than 70 percent of attendees did.

Yes, you can.

After June 1, registration will only be available on the Skybridge, Level 4 at the Washington State Convention Center. Photo ID is required to register, and dentists registering must present an ADA membership card to receive the member rate. Registration hours are Thursday, June 14 7:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m, and Friday, June 15 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Who needs to register, and how do I know what badge to get?

Everyone attending the PNDC has to have either a Conference Badge or an Exhibit Badge.

Conference Badge includes entrance into the Exhibit Hall, all lectures at no additional cost, and eligibility to register for workshops. Workshops require an additional fee and attendance to lectures is on a first come, first served basis. Please arrive early to secure a seat. Exhibit Badge allows entrance into the Exhibit Hall only –no access to lectures, workshops or Level 6.

Are children allowed at the PNDC? Children under the age of 16 are only allowed entry into the Exhibit Hall during show hours, never into any of the lectures or workshops. In order to enter the Exhibit Hall, children must register with a parent for a complimentary Exhibits Badge. Children under the age of 16 must always be accompanied by an adult. Child care is not provided at the PNDC. All children more than 16 years old must purchase either an Exhibit Hall or Conference Badge. For the safety of your children, do not leave them unattended at the PNDC.

Once I register, then what?

Badges and tickets will be mailed to U.S. and Canadian attendees who register by the June 1 deadline. Open registration envelope immediately to ensure badges and tickets are correct. All materials will be sent to the primary registrant. Once you have your badge that’s all you need to attend the PNDC! What if I need to cancel?

Badge(s) must be returned with written request for refunds, cancellations and name substitutions. Workshop and special event tickets are non-refundable. Refunds/cancellations are subject to a $15 fee per registrant. Substitution of names on badges must be made prior to May 20, and will not be made at the conference. All refunds will be processed following the conference. Requests must be postmarked no later than May 20 and mailed to the Washington State Dental Association, 126 NW Canal Street, Seattle, Wash., 98107.

Unless stated otherwise in the program, all lectures, workshops, and activities will be held in downtown Seattle at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center.

C’mon, Seattle is a foodies’ paradise! During lunch breaks there are scads of options close by — everything from fine dining to fast food. We recommend you Google “downtown Seattle restaurants” and find places near the Convention Center, then call ahead to see if they take reservations.

On-site you will find healthy choices at the Sidewalk Café, conveniently located inside the Exhibit Hall. There are also a variety of fast food restaurants on Level 1 of the Convention Center.

Technology available for endodontic treatment can allow for increased success in less time which is good for practitioners and their patients. Endodontic success can be won or lost in the initial phases of diagnosis, case selection and access. This course will address some of the everyday mistakes made in these initial stages and some ways to identify and overcome these pitfalls.

Asymptomatic cracks in dentin have received little attention in the literature, yet they represent the beginning of structural failure for teeth. In this course, evidence will be presented to back up this claim, and to help participants understand the risks and benefits of offering treatment to prevent crack propagation. Attendees will leave this course with an evidence based appreciation for early “true” cracks that will help them make more effective decisions for treatment in their offices.

Dr. Hagel-Bradway graduated from The University of Mississippi with her dental degree in 1984 and received her certificate in endodontics from SUNY Buffalo in 1988. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and has a full time practice with her husband in Tacoma/Puyallup, Wash.

Seattle in the 60s

“1960 - on the edge of the future” In 1960, the population of the entire state of Washington was 2,853,214. In contrast, in 2011 nearly 2 million people called King County home. Although the late 60s were a turbulent time in the country, Washington state experienced halcyon days in the early part of the decade — and even could lay claim to a visit by the Beatles in 1964 — when they famously fished off their balcony at the Edgewater Hotel in downtown Seattle.

Century 21 World’s Fair, April-October 1962.

The World’s Fair arguably reenergized the downtown of Seattle, and was generally a smashing success, even finishing with a profit. The fair, given a futuristic science theme, was designed to leave behind a civic center, now known as Seattle Center, containing arts buildings, a food court, museums, and serving also as a fairground. The United States Science Pavilion (now the Pacific Science Center) was one of the central attractions. Boeing created and installed “a space age Spacearium” in the United States Science Pavilion, a permanent addition to the center and one of the most attractive features of the fair.

This project evaluated the claims by comparing adaptation in proximal boxes restored using the devices with traditional placement.

Regenerative (Revascularization) EndodonticTreatment CPT Regina Mar Regenerative endodontics is a rapidly evolving field in which the goal is to biologically replace the damaged cells of the pulp-dentin complex. Historically, apexification has been the method used to treat loss of vitality in immature permanent teeth with open apices; however, this results in a compromised root structure due to thinner dentin walls that are more prone to fracture. Regenerative endodontics in immature, necrotic teeth utilizes stem cells, growth factors, and a scaffold to form functional tissues. Despite the lack of a vital dentin-pulp complex, this procedure allows for further development of the root, as well as strengthening of the walls from deposition of new dentin.

Biomarkers in Oral Cancer Detection CPT Aaron Amano The American Cancer Society estimates that there are over 35,000 new cases of oral and pharyngeal cancers diagnosed each year of which about 6900 will die. Researchers have recently identified several salivary biomarkers that can predict the presence OSCC with an accuracy of about 93%. Current research is focused on the early detection OSCC via saliva and development of a chair side assay. With future investigation saliva analysis may prove to be an effective method for diagnosis, prognosis prediction of OSCC and also serve as a mean to monitor the disease post therapy.

This first of a two-part series will highlight the when, what, and how of caries prevention in the primary dentition — from caries risk assessment to the latest on the recommendations of fluoride use. Pearls on managing the eruption and the orthodontic alignment of the primary teeth will be described and tips on treating habits and behavior management will be shared. A multitude of clinical cases are used to demonstrate the practical pearls.

Eruption problems, dental acid erosion, and challenging trauma cases will be the focus of the second of the two-part series. Trauma management in the primary and permanent dentition will be discussed and cases using MTA with five year follow-up will be shared.

The discussion and practice includes film-based and digital imaging techniques. An overview of image quality and radiation safety will be presented.

The majority of the workshop will focus on the attendees actively participating in the placement of films on each other and sensor placement and image making on a manikin using digital radiography. Attendees are encouraged to bring specific problems and will receive individualized help. The experiences will include techniques for opening contacts, adjusting for high and low palates, eliminating pain for patients with small mouths or a tight lingual frenum and ensuring that the proper teeth are present on each image.

The E4D system is an easy to use chairside CAD/CAM system that is empowering modern dentistry. Same day crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers increase your productivity, provide a tremendous convenience for your patients, and give you complete control of the final restoration. This hands-on workshop will allow participants a full interaction with the E4D system including scan, design, mill and characterize a restoration. It will also include a detailed understanding of auxiliary staff’s role with this technology.
