A Word From The Headmaster Dear Friends, A few years ago, I attended a conference in Dubai, the capital city of one of the United Arab Emirates. It is a multinational city with almost every nation represented in its expatriate community. While there, I happened to be reading Thomas Friedman’s “The World is Flat,” and I saw the author’s thesis play out in front of my eyes. Friedman explains that “flat” is “connected,” and he argues that the lowering of trade and political barriers, fueled by the ease with which we communicate through technology, have created a world more connected than ever. This has opened up many new opportunities for global business and even education.

In a connected world, students from around the globe are knocking on the doors of American colleges and universities (and college-prep schools like Westminster) seeking entry, and their enrollment numbers continue to rise. What’s interesting is that the colleges and universities with the highest number of international students often have the most selective admissions and are listed at the top of the “best” rankings. Whether we like it or not, the world is flattening, and Westminster is preparing students for colleges and a world that will be quite different from the ones for which we were prepared.

When one thinks about the typical Westminster Upper School student, the first thing that probably comes to mind is someone who has been born and raised in the Augusta-area. However, students from all over the world are beginning to show interest in attending Westminster, thanks to the international student program.

The program strives to fulfill one of Westminster’s goals of becoming a global community. “We want to look like the world and be globally represented,” said Paul Gaffney, interim international student program coordinator. “In order to be a global community, we must open our doors to the world for them to come study here.”

Managing a program of this nature is not an easy task, but Mr. Gaffney is up to the challenge. Having spent 17 years teaching English as a second language (ESL) in China and Japan, he has considerable experience working with international students and is passionate about using this opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

However, as interim international student program coordinator, teaching ESL is only a small part of his job. He also oversees the homestay placements, recruits host families, works with international student agencies, advises teachers on how to interact with the students and much more.

This year, seven students are participating in the program: six from China and one from Tanzania. Many of them plan to stay through graduation and eventually attend an American university. As the program continues to gain momentum, the hope is to have students join Westminster from South America and other continents as well. “We have to seek a balance in the international student body if we truly want to represent

“What some people forget is that this program is not just about international students learning about America,” said Mr. Gaffney. “It’s also about our students learning about and reaching out to the world.” The Westminster students and their families who are serving as hosts to the international students are reaching out firsthand by opening up their homes and their hearts to those they had never even met.

“It’s easy to think that we are the ones ‘giving’ in this arrangement, but we are the ones gaining so much more,” said Matt Willis, host to student David Bakalemwa from Tanzania. “One of the biggest motivators to host an international student was the desire to teach our children to appreciate people from other cultures, races and ethnic backgrounds (and Pam and I still have a lot to learn ourselves!). I have heard if you can’t go see the world, bring the world into your home. We eagerly anticipate what God will do in the days ahead.”

As the program continues to grow, Westminster will be in need of even more families to serve as hosts to international students. The school offers a stipend of $8,000 per student to each host family. We talked at lunch with two of the international students to gain their perspective on life in Augusta, studying at Westminster and their plans for the future.

Who Are They?

Name: David Bakalemwa Grade: 11 Home Country: Tanzania Host Parents: Pam and Matt Willis Name: Yang (Doris) Liu Grade: 10 Home Country: China Host Parents: Hallie and Howard Merry Why did you choose Westminster? What stood out to you in the admissions process?

David: I thought it would be a great experience to study in a different country. So far, it’s proven to be.

Doris: Math is my favorite. At Westminster, we have different classmates and a chance to meet more people. The classes are more active, and students can say their opinions and study with the teacher.

What are your college aspirations? What is Westminster doing to prepare you for college?

David: I want to play basketball in college and study math. Playing on the Westminster team will hopefully help me. I don’t know which college I want to attend.

Doris: I want to go to college in America, especially Caltech, because I love physics. I go to Mr. McCallie, the college counselor, for questions about college, and he gives me suggestions. The teachers help me learn the knowledge and give me time to study.

What is life in Augusta like?

Doris: When deciding where to study in America, I searched online and found the Westminster website. I really liked the many types of classes and that many students have been admitted to four-year colleges. My teacher in China encouraged me to come to this school.

David: There is more stuff to do like skateboarding and going to the lake.

Is the school what you expected it to be?

What is life like in your host family?

David: Yes, it has been great.

David: They are fun to be around. They are a funny family.

Doris: Yes, much better than expected!

What is it like to attend a Christian school?

David: I attended a Christian school in Tanzania, so I’m used to the culture.

Doris: Being at a Christian school gives me a different way to look at the world.

Westminster has offered us a special Bible class so we can understand what the Bible says.

We are all respectful of the Christian beliefs.

What is your favorite class? What is it like to be in an American classroom?

David: Pre-calculus is my favorite class because Mrs. Cantrell makes it challenging and fun. There are more students in the classrooms here than in Tanzania, and the school day is longer.

Doris: This is a good city because of the environment. There are a lot of trees and animals. I feel relaxed. There are more things to do like sports and extracurricular activities.

Doris: They treat me very good. My little sister (Vee Merry) is in the Lower School. She comes to my room and plays with me. I am happy to stay with them, because I feel like I’m in my house. They tell me things about American history and culture.

How does life in Augusta differ from life in your home country?

David: The food is different. There is a lot more fast food. It’s hotter in Tanzania all year, and there are no seasons.

Doris: In China, there is a lot of spicy food. I like spaghetti here. People say hello in Augusta even if they don’t know you. They don’t do that in China. There are a lot of students in China, and they don’t know each other very well. Everyone at Westminster can really get to know each other.

Fine Arts Spotlight Jarred Hanner Grade: 11 Church: West Acres Baptist Church Fine arts activities at Westminster: One-act play and spring musical, men’s vocal quartet, AP music theory class, forensics.

Other extracurricular activities: I attended the John Robert Powers Performing Arts Academy in California this past summer, and as a result of my time there, I will be attending iPoP! (International Presentation of Performers) Talent Agency in Los Angeles in the summer of 2013. I also take private voice lessons. I played football my ninth and 10th grade years.

Favorite fine arts memory: Forensics class in ninth grade. When Aryle Pastore yelled the random word “flounder” in the middle of her impromptu speech, I realized how fun and creative forensics could be. I was especially glad to know that there are different categories such as humorous interpretation and dramatic interpretation. I also really enjoyed singing “The Company Way” with Tim Nabholz.

Inspired by: Summer Barfield (WSA ’12) and the passion and abilities of others.

Why do you love fine arts? It allows me to express myself by disguising myself behind someone else’s personality and songs.

What do you enjoy most about Westminster?

The encouraging atmosphere.

Most important skill or attribute you have developed through participating in fine arts: Communication and self-confidence.

Art Students Excel at the Georgia-Carolina State Fair

The Georgia-Carolina State Fair hosts an annual art contest, and Westminster students continue to place extremely well. This competition is a huge event entered by students from public and private schools across the Augusta area. In October, Westminster students claimed ten blue-ribbon awards with five first-place finishes in the Lower School division, three first-place finishes in Upper School photography and two first-place finishes in the Upper School division. Westminster students claimed a total of 34 awards including second- and third-place finishes.

Athletic Spotlight MIChael GOOdell Grade: 12 Church: Christ Church Presbyterian In my spare time, I enjoy: Spending time with friends, playing guitar and listening to music. extracurricular activities at Westminster: Football, soccer, Science Olympiad, Rugged Outdoors Club.

Standout moment at Westminster: Beating Briarwood this football season. It was the best I ever felt after a game. The comeback was fantastic!

Inspired by: Glenn Bell (history teacher and assistant football coach). He encourages and challenges me, both academically and athletically. He has high standards, and that makes me work harder to meet his standards.

Why do you love athletics? The memories are irreplaceable. There are so many moments that are only available in a team setting.

What do you enjoy most about Westminster? I love having teachers and faculty who genuinely want to see us succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it’s staying late after school for backwork or taking the time to talk to ask us about how we’re doing, having teachers who invest in us makes a huge difference in the quality of education.

What is one unique or special feature about Westminster? The high standard of education while maintaining a focus on preparing us to grow God’s kingdom.

Carter WIlSOn Grade: 10 Church: Warren Baptist In my spare time, I enjoy: Running, biking, playing basketball, playing disc golf, listening to music, watching TV and reading, especially the Bible. extracurricular activities at Westminster: basketball, cross-country, track, Debate Club, Soldiers for Christ, peer tutor.

Standout moment at Westminster: When I first visited Westminster in the sixth grade, it was culture shock. All of the kids seemed to get along. They were all respectful of their teachers and classmates. I saw a difference at Westminster, and that is what drew me to the school. Athletically, one of my biggest highlights was winning the region in cross-country last year.

Inspired by: Both of my parents. They support me. Without them, I would have no sense of what a real, hard work ethic is. They have taught me to give my all in everything I do.

Why do you love athletics? My favorite thing about athletics is the competition aspect of a sport. The fun of pushing yourself, within a meet or a game, and being able to see the fruits of your labor is truly a great joy. I enjoy seeing the improvement that is the result of hard work.

What do you enjoy most about Westminster? The kids are the best part.

There are so many people that have strong passions for Christ.

What is one unique or special feature about Westminster? The teachers really care about how you do in your classes. They are willing to go out of their way to help you. After school, they are willing to provide extra time to review for that particular class.

School News Winter 2012 Region One-Act Play Results The Region One-Act competition ended with a third place finish for our One-Act team as they performed “The Three Musketeers.”

Though they will not be attending the state competition this year, cast members did win two of the four Best Performance awards.

Both Christopher Lamberts and Aryle Pastore won for their roles of “Cardinal Richelieu” and “Constance.”

We also had two actors named to the All-Star cast – Jarred Hanner and Grace Goodell for their roles of “D’Artagnan” and “Milady de Winter.”

Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. They placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT).

National Merit Semifinalist Senior Hope Patterson was named a semifinalist in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring 2011 PSAT test-takers in each state. Hope will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring.

Veterans Day

All-State Chorus Congratulations to the seven students who made the Georgia Music Educator’s Association (GMEA) All-State Chorus. This is the highest number of Westminster students to be selected for this prestigious group. They passed a rigorous audition on Oct. 13 and will be among the top choral students in Georgia to sing in a mass choir under nationallyknown directors. The All-State Chorus occurs in February in Savannah. Congratulations to Ellie Lynch (seventh grade), Stephen Cave (ninth grade), Amalia Lee (10th grade), Caroline Cain (11th grade), Anna Grimm (11th grade), Jarred Hanner (11th grade) and Lawson Powers (11th grade).

National Merit Scholarship News Commended Students Upper School students Wes Maddox and David Newton were named Commended

Veterans Day provides an opportunity for the Westminster community to honor those from the U.S. Armed Forces who are serving or have served our great nation. All students gathered together for a special assembly on Nov. 12 with 40 veterans and their families in attendance.

The distinguished guest speaker was Retired Lieutenant General Dana Atkins, who is now president of The Augusta Chronicle.

Burkina Faso, to present at two different conferences.

The first three-day conference was a national conference for Christian school administrators from the country of Burkina Faso. This was the first conference of its kind and a remarkable achievement given that Burkina Faso is predominately Muslim. The second three-day conference drew 15 professors from a national Christian teacher training college.

These professors were eager to learn more about the distinctiveness of a Christian school, particularly as it relates to integration of Christian faith and learning.

SLEW Student Life Director Mike Freace and the Student Leadership Team tied “spirit” and “spiritual” together this year with a focus on the kingdom of God during the 2012 Spiritual Life Emphasis Week (SLEW) Oct. 22 – 26.

The goal for the week was to examine how everything we do now as believers should be representative of the kingdom of God here on earth. Students were shown how God is not a “future thing” or a distant figure, but rather available to them right now – that he is a God of redemption and restoration, and that He desires a relationship with them.

The first two groups went to Goodwill Industries, where they took items off racks and restocked shelves. Another group teamed up with Hope for Augusta and painted the May Park Community Center that will be used to give after-school tutoring to students.

The final group went to New Hope Worship Center, where they sorted and bagged food items for the Bridge Ministry, folded clothes and interviewed and prayed with the clients that came to receive food.

BP-GOAL Scholarship Winner Ninth-grader Justin Gaffney was awarded a BP-GOAL Scholarship to attend Westminster for the 2012-2013 school year.

Representatives from BP and the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program presented the award to Justin at a school assembly on Sept.

21.

Debate & Forensics Teams Congratulations to our Debate and Forensics teams for placing in the top 20 out of 95 schools at the Wake Forest Early Bird National Tournament in September. The Westminster Forensics Team had their best showing for Westminster in their nine years of forensics at Wake Forest. The individual honors are listed on our site and are available by searching the term "Wake Forest."

Later in September, our teams competed at the Autumn Classic Debate and Forensics Tournament at Lincoln County High School and won the Philip Wertz Individual Events Sweepstakes for highest overall placements.

We placed higher in more events than any other school and were the smallest

The Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program’s BP-GOAL Scholars Fund awarded 15 scholarships, enabling qualifying students to attend Georgia private schools beginning in 2012-2013. The scholarship recipients must demonstrate drive, motivation and strengths in math, science and technologies important to the energy industry.

Sixth Grade Fall Service Projects The sixth grade students participated in a service day around the Augusta community on Sept. 25.

GISA Distinguished Service Awards Congratulations to Susan Smith, Upper School chemistry teacher, and Leisa Tebbs, Lower School health and physical education teacher, for receiving the GISA Distinguished Service Award for 25 years of service to independent school education. They were recognized for their achievements at the Thanksgiving Chapel on Nov. 20.

This fall, the Lower School added a fun, new element to their morning announcements.

Students will now be learning how to say “hello” or “good morning” in different languages. The students will be prompted to look at the smart board in their classroom and say the greeting with the student who is doing morning announcements. Later in the year, when several different greetings have been learned, Mrs. Lawson will play a Global Wonders song in music that joins them all together.

Our varsity football team ended the season with a winning record of 6-5. The team won more games this season than the previous two seasons combined. Way to go, 'Cats!

Middle School Tennis Congratulations to the Middle School girls tennis team for winning the CSRA tennis tournament for the second year in a row with an undefeated record of 4-0.

The boys Middle School tennis team finished their season with an overall record of 2-3.

The Middle School football team enjoyed a successful 2012 season, finishing with a 3-2 record. The 'Cats look forward to next season as 15 sixth-graders and four seventhgraders plan to return. Congratulations to this season’s award winners:

Mrs. Regina Franklin was filmed by the Day of Discovery television program on Nov. 13 as she taught her ninth grade class on “Becoming a Woman of Virtue.” The show is a 30-minute documentary program that airs in the United States and Canada every Sunday morning on the Ion Network and other various cable channels. Their programs cover a variety of topics from Bible land programs to biographies and special interest stories.

Most Valuable Player – Christian Robinson; Best Offensive Player – McKay Stakely; Best Defensive Player – Slayton Lutz; C.A.T.S. Award (given to the player who most exemplifies Christlike character, accountability, tenacity and a servants heart) – Noah Kershner.

Varsity Cross-Country The Westminster boys and girls cross-country teams took eighth and sixth place, respectively, at the Georgia Independent School Association State Cross-Country Meet on Oct. 27 in Albany. Nina McCallie won third place in the girls race, and Evan Downs won fourth place in the boys race. Go Wildcats!

The producers are currently working on a program titled, Looks Can Kill. This program will look at the affects and pressure that our culture and media place on women regarding their outward appearance. The program will center on the great value that every person has in God’s eyes regardless of one’s outer appearance. They will be showing clips from Mrs. Franklin’s classroom as well as a personal interview with her.

We will be sure to announce when the program is scheduled to be aired!

Varsity Competition Cheerleading The competition cheerleading squad won the GISA Class AAA State Championship on Nov. 17 at John Milledge Academy in Milledgeville. This is the first state title for the Westminster cheerleading program, which has placed second the last six seasons.

2003 Blanche Conger (’03) married Adam Forrest McCune on May 26, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Augusta. The couple lives near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Adam is a doctoral candidate in English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Blanche is currently writing her dissertation for a doctorate in classics from the University of Virginia. Both Blanche and Adam received their undergraduate degrees from Wheaton College.

Katie Foushee (’03) and Andy Steffes were married on Sept. 15, 2012, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Augusta. Other Westminster alumni in the wedding included Ginny Thornton Merrill (’03). The couple lives in Athens, where Katie is manager of Sonia Says and Andy is owner of Fortis Masonry.

2004 Amanda Middlebrooks (’04) married Shawn Williams on Feb. 11, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Augusta. The couple currently lives in Grovetown. Amanda was employed by the Columbia County Board of Education as a math teacher but is taking a year off and working at the Augusta Ballet School. Shawn works for Wackenhut security company as a long-range precision rifleman at Savannah River Site.

2008 Lisa Littleton (’08) married Stanley Haines on June 15, 2012, at a venue on Fort Jackson.

After high school, Lisa graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in mass communications and journalism.

In the fall of 2009, Lisa started attending NewSpring Church in Columbia, South Carolina. She met Christ the summer of 2010 and met Stanley shortly after. The couple now resides in Columbia.

2012 Ivey Herrington (’12) made the equestrian team her first year at Berry College. At the Berry Fall Classic horse show on Oct. 20 and 21, Ivey won the novice equitation on the flat both Saturday and Sunday. On Oct. 27 and 28 at the Georgia Tech Intercollegiate Horse Show Association show, Ivey won the novice equitation on the flat on Saturday and placed second in novice over fences on Sunday.

Developing News of school choice, and it has allowed many students the opportunity to gain an education that was not available to them in the public school system.

Current students benefit as GOAL dollars free up budgeted financial aid funds.

If you pay Georgia state taxes and have not yet participated in the GOAL Scholarship tax credit, you are missing out on an incredible way to support Westminster at no cost to yourself. Don’t let the word “taxes” scare you. Our school has participated in this program since its inception in 2008, with over $400,000 dollars being redirected to Westminster. It works!

What is the GOAL Scholarship tax credit? It is an opportunity for you to redirect your Georgia state taxes to Westminster. These are dollars that you are going to pay the state anyway. Why not have our school benefit and take the opportunity to tell the government where to spend your tax money? This is a tax credit, not a mere deduction.

Who can participate? Any Georgia state tax payer may participate. You do not have to live in Georgia or be a Westminster parent, just pay Georgia state taxes. If you do not pay Georgia state taxes, you know someone who does.

Encourage them to take part in this opportunity.

How much money can I redirect? You can redirect up to $2,500 if you file jointly or $1,000 if you file as an individual. Remember that you do not have to redirect the entire amount. If your business is a C-Corp, you can redirect up to 75 percent of your tax liability.

Who benefits by my participation? We all benefit from your participation. You receive a charitable income tax deduction on your federal income tax return in the same amount that you have redirected, and you also have the opportunity to tell the state how to spend your tax dollars. New students who have met our academic requirements for admissions and have been enrolled in a public school benefit by being eligible for GOAL funds. This is Georgia’s version

When should I participate? You may send in your forms as early as January. We advise that you do this as soon as possible. Only $50 million can be redirected each calendar year. This may sound like a lot, but with every private school in the state, including the large private schools in Atlanta, competing for the same dollars, the cap will be met quickly. Last year the cap was met by mid-August, and this year will be even earlier.

How do I participate? Download the forms at http://wsa.net/giving/georgia-tax-tuition-credit/ and return them to Westminster. Please mark them to the attention of the Development Office.
