A WORD FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear Friends, We are 15 years into the 21st century, yet educators continue to speak about the skills that students will need for this era. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills argues that citizens will need four key skills: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Only a few years ago, Patrick Bassett, former president of the National Association of Independent Schools (of which Westminster holds membership) affirmed those four skills and added two more: character and cross-cultural competency. He maintained that the 21st century will demand and reward these skills and values.

I appreciate the renewed emphasis on skills in what many refer to as The Information Age, and perhaps they are needed now more than ever. But they were also required in the 20th century. In fact, these skills have always been necessary. Are they not timeless and needed for human flourishing? When did civilizations not need critical thinkers; effective communicators who write and speak well; teamwork; innovation; moral and ethical leaders; and global citizens? And is knowledge no longer important?

These “21st century skills” and subject knowledge have been foundational to a Westminster education and continue to be priorities as we seek to position our students well for their futures. However, the education

we provide goes far beyond simply having students learn and master knowledge and skills. Because we believe in the authority of Holy Scripture and the Lordship of Jesus Christ over all things, teaching and learning do look different at Westminster.

The purpose for which we educate students is a very sacred matter. Character is not character without a moral compass. We teach and expect our students to exhibit Christ-like character. Collaboration and cross-cultural competency are more than a means toward future careers for our students. Instead, these characteristics should be motivated by our following Jesus’ command to love our neighbors (even the ones we’ve never met).

We seek to bring glory to God as we educate students to speak and write with excellence; to think critically, thoughtfully and with originality about their world; and to express their creativity as gifts to God and others.

I saw this in action one recent afternoon at Georgia Regents University while our Middle School Junior Model United Nations team competed against other schools addressing two significant global topics: migrationhuman rights and terrorism-weapons of mass destruction. Before the competition, they spent time during lunches and club period preparing five teams to represent South Africa, Romania, Israel, Ireland and Germany at a mock U.N. General Assembly. During that time, they gained knowledge about their respective countries, including their positions on current issues. The students had to write well, speak well and think on their feet. They

learned to empathize with others while considering other points of view. They had to practice civility toward others, a skill that our country and world need more than ever. They learned to compromise when compromise was necessary, build consensus and resolve conflicts. It was a great learning opportunity in which the students developed and honed their skills (“21st century”).

I am proud to say that, in the end, Westminster received the highest honor of the day, Most Outstanding Delegation, for all area public and private schools. Our team and individuals were also awarded Best Negotiator, Best Delegate, Best Orator, Most Enthusiastic, Most In Character and Most Diplomatic. These are not skills that were developed overnight, but a compilation of their Lower and Middle School learning experiences. These students received an education that equipped them with the skills necessary to win a Junior Model United Nations competition and to be successful in the real world.

It’s my prayer that every Westminster student would use their education, including skills the 21st century requires, for purposes that would bring glory and honor to God. Warm regards,

NEW BIBLE CURRICULUM

WHAT’S NEW IN THE CLASSROOM NEW COURSES FOR 2014-15 Westminster is excited to be offering several new Middle and Upper School courses this school year. Thanks to our knowledgeable and ambitious faculty, Westminster now offers Upper School ecology, Advanced Placement physics, sixth-grade English research, eighthgrade English creative writing and a revamped Middle and Upper School physical education to a mandatory writing workshop. Since course with a strength and conditioning one-on-one conferencing is the best type of component. help students can receive to improve their writing, we developed The Write Direction MOVING IN THE “WRITE” writing lab this year.”

DIRECTION Room 307 in the Upper School administrative building has been transformed from a student lounge to a writing lab, appropriately named The Write Direction.

This expansion of the English department gives students the opportunity to conference one-on-one with an English teacher about essays that they have been assigned in any subject, not just English. Students can also come for help with college essays or writing competitions.

No appointment is necessary, and this academic support is open to any Upper School student.

PEER TUTORING MAKES A COMEBACK

After a multi-year hiatus, Brielle Smith (’15) revived the Upper School peer-tutoring program this school year as another means of providing academic support to our students.

NEW BIBLE CURRICULUM IN LOWER SCHOOL The Lower School has adopted a new Bible curriculum this year for first through fourth grades. The fifth-grade classes are using it as supplemental material this year and will fully adopt it next year.

The “Building on the Rock” curriculum is designed to help students interpret knowledge and build foundational beliefs and values from a Christian perspective. JUNIORS AND SENIORS VISIT GRU BY: MRS. MARY WEIDMAN Today’s students have access to more information than any previous generation. In an effort to prepare our graduates to locate,

evaluate and effectively utilize the many resources available in a university library, Westminster has launched a partnership with Georgia Regents University (GRU).

Following the workshop, students were given the opportunity to collaborate on a series of activities that reinforced the skills they had learned.

In September, members of the Class of 2015 participated in an orientation at GRU’s Reese Library. During the workshop, they were introduced to such skills as accessing a catalog of the library’s holdings (books, journals, e-books, media, etc.), searching specific subscription databases for particular types of information, learning how to expand and limit searches and analyzing the quality of a source.

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL BY: MICHAEL MCCRAITH (’15) Before the elections this past fall, the seniors in Mr. Craig Johnson’s AP Government class were visited by two local politicians vying for the Georgia District 12 seat in the House of Representatives – then incumbent John Barrow and newcomer Rick Allen. This rare opportunity to have candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties speak to our students gave them firsthand insight of the similarities and differences between the two sides. Michael McCraith (’15) shares his thoughts on the experience.

Lawyer turned lawmaker, former Congressman John Barrow used his visit to Mr. Johnson’s AP Government class to lecture about gerrymandering, which means to divide (a state, school district, etc.) into political units that give one group an unfair advantage. This practice has been a nuisance to him over the past several years in Georgia, and he favors abolishing it altogether, making representation more depictive of voters.

Former Congressman Barrow also took time to describe a typical day in Washington and shared his desire for America to keep troops out of the Middle East. However when asked about his faith,

Business leader Rick Allen, who ultimately defeated Barrow to win the election, used his visit to the senior-level students as a campaign stop. He concisely presented who he was and then followed with an extensive question and answer session. Taking advantage of his setting in a Christian school, Congressman Allen incorporated his faith in nearly all of his answers.

He was a strong proponent of states’ rights, especially with regards to health care, and he shared his proposal for a National Healthcare Trust to insure the poor. On the immigration issue, Congressman Allen shared a personal anecdote and claimed that illegal immigrants usually want to return home after working in the United States for several years. Most of the class agreed that he was approachable, and one student even described him as “grandfatherly.”

Mr. Barrow was sparse in his comments about faith, he carefully considered the ramifications of his view on his constituents. Unlike Mr. Barrow, Mr. Allen did not come across as direct or as polished, and although Mr. Allen’s optimism in what he desired to accomplish was noteworthy, it was a little ambitious for a freshman representative.

While their visits did not answer my question specifically, I took away a hybrid perspective — one that is forthright in presentation, seeks Biblical truth, is knowledgeable of the issues and considers the impact of decisions as an imperative approach. As someone rooted in Christian theism and interested in politics, this perspective will enable me to faithfully serve the Lord while representing my constituents in any office I may hold.

Over the past couple of years, I have been personally interested in learning how my Christian theism fits into modern politics.

Can a conservative believer in the Bible really find a home in a seemingly perverse profession? When I heard that our class was going to have such an intimate time me of interaction with these two men, I hoped to gain some insight into my question.

Mr. Allen’s positions were centered on his Christian faith, but he lacked deep insight and a forthright presentation of his ideas. Though

FACULTY FOCUS: TRACY LUTZ BY: SARAH SAXON (’12) Steady improvement, topping personal bests, gaining strength in repeated practice — these are the things Mrs. Tracy Lutz strives toward in the lives of Middle School students at Westminster as she serves through coaching cross-country, helping with leadership programs and being involved in various academic spheres on a daily basis.

Originally from Georgia, Mrs. Lutz was reared in Atlanta. During her middle and high school years spent attending a private school, she developed a heart for Christian education. She went on to attend Duke University, where she graduated in 1993 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in both history and psychology.

Upon her college graduation, she moved to Augusta and began work at Westminster, where she secured her first teaching position.

While in Augusta, she met and married her husband, Mr. Ryan Lutz (’89). In 1997, Mr. and Mrs. Lutz felt that the Lord was calling them to teach at a mission school.

Connor. While raising their children, she continued to be involved with education through tutoring. She served in programs quite similar to that of Westminster’s academic support program. During her time tutoring and working in these academic programs, Mrs. Lutz grew to value one-on-one learning time.

“I love being able to help students learn how to reach their potential,” Mrs. Lutz reveals.

She was elated to help her students discover ways they might be successful, despite the challenges they faced in their classrooms.

In 2011, the Lutz family had the opportunity to return to Augusta and Westminster.

Mrs. Lutz now serves as a Middle School geography teacher, an academic support coordinator and the sixth-grade class dean.

The Lutzes returned to the States in 1998, where they worked and served in Atlanta until 2007. That year, after a move to Memphis, Tennessee, Mrs. Lutz left her teaching career to stay at home and raise their three children: Jonathan, Reagan and

She enjoys seeing the individual strengths of her students. Some may thrive in athletics, some in academics and others in leadership. Just as nearly every member of the Middle School girls cross-country team improved their personal best at the recent

championship meet, Mrs. Lutz also works toward bringing out the best academic and leadership traits in each student she touches.

Teaching does not just flow one way, however.

According to Mrs. Lutz, she learns from her Middle School students on a daily basis.

“They have taught me a lot about hard work and perseverance,” she explains.

Her students model values for her as well.

She notes, “I have seen students reach out to others in need and do the right thing even when it isn’t comfortable.”

Both inside and outside of the classroom, Mrs. Lutz values the impact her students have on her life.

Mrs. Lutz’s primary goal for her students is that they will grow spiritually.

She explains, “My hope, first and foremost, is that they will grow in their relationships with the Lord. I hope that they will find their security in who they are in Christ, not in how they perform in the classroom or the fine arts arena or the athletic field.”

She also hopes that her students will always strive to do their best in all areas of their lives, bringing glory to God in all that they do.

Not just a teacher and coach, Mrs. Lutz is also a Westminster parent. She and Mr. Lutz

thoughtfully planned for their children’s educations.

“We felt strongly that we wanted our children to be at a school that provided a Christian worldview while still having high academic standards,” she said.

Mr. and Mrs. Lutz’s three children are currently in the fifth, sixth and eighth grades at Westminster. Mr. Lutz can also be found on Westminster’s campus teaching Upper School English.

Mrs. Lutz’s passion for Middle School students is evident in her involvement in the many different realms of these students’ lives.

As she continues to stretch them with new information, ideas, experiences and practice, she encourages them to continue to top their personal best for the glory of God, which in turn makes Westminster and the community a better place.

The award celebrates the achievements of our faculty and honors the memory of Juanita and Charlie Green and Roberta and Harry Orr, parents of Peggy and Charlie Green.

Donnyell Miller (’15) has been named an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Forty-one Westminster students and alumni received recognition as AP Scholars. They took 171 AP exams in 16 different subjects in the spring of 2014 and achieved an 84-percent pass rate.

Jacob Criss (’15) has been named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Tyron Wright (’19) was awarded a BP-GOAL Scholarship to attend Westminster for the 2014-15 school year.

Fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Ashley Shaw is one of 11 recipients of the 2014-15 Junior League grant known as the Award for Classroom Enrichment (ACE), which provides funding for creative teaching projects.

The Middle School Junior Model United Nations team received Most Outstanding Delegation at their competition at Georgia Regents University. Each student on the team also won an award.

This is the first year Westminster has participated in the Model U.N. program.

Two other 20th century artists that Ms. Heppert plans to focus on this year are Norman Rockwell and his humorous, tender and patriotic window into our world as well as Pablo Picasso and his unique perspective and journey as an artist.

Even though next year the cycle begins again for the fourth time since its inception, Ms. Heppert and Mrs. Lawson say the curriculum never gets old because they don’t teach the historical periods the same way twice. The constant innovation and adjustments ensure that our Westminster students are receiving the best fine arts foundation possible.

“We are giving our students the framework and education we wish we had gotten when we were growing up,” said Ms. Heppert. “It’s a joy teaching these young minds to make friends with art and music each day.”

Along with having one of the smallest one-act casts in school history, this year’s play went a “step” further by creating the illusion of a completely black-and-white production. Literally every aspect of the play was transformed into black and white: the set, the costumes, the props, even the hair and makeup.

“The most fun part of playing multiple characters was playing around with so many any different accents and mannerisms,” said Chris Morgan (’16). “Every character had to be unique and distinguishable, so I got to stretch my vocal and physical capabilities in n terms of diversity. “During the scene where we use paper cutouts behind a backlit screen to simulate people dancing, we changed one of the cutouts to be the iconic silhouette of Alfred Hitchcock,” said Mr. Owen.

The strong character performances, consistently executed accents (including German, Scottish, Russian and several dialects of English) and impeccable timing of key scenes led to the Westminster cast winning the GISA AAA state one-act championship on Nov. 19. This is the third state win for a Westminster one-act play and the second state win in the past four years. Nathan and Kaleigh also took home another round of Best Performer awards, and the overall production earned Honorable Mention for artistic concept.

“It was an incredible feeling to win state,” said Kaleigh. “I'm really thankful to be able to share an accomplishment like this with such an amazing cast and crew. Mr. Owen really helped everyone grow so much this year, not only as actors, but also just as people. It was a wonderful moment that I won't ever forget.”

For Nathan, being a member of the 2011 and 2014 state championship one-act casts was a dream come true and an honor, not only for him, but the Westminster alumni who shaped him into the actor he is today. y.

“I was very blessed to come into the drama ma program when I did, as I was able to learn rn so much from the older actors and actressess in ‘See How They Run,’” Nathan said. “Since nce then, I have tried to maintain both the high professional standards and the devotion n to acting that I gained that year. This recent nt victory does not belong solely to the cast st and crew of ‘The 39 Steps,’ but also to the alumni who inspired us and pushed us to achieve our full potential.”

The Westminster athletic department strives to create a culture of success, leadership and character among our student-athletes. One of the ways they are doing this is by committing to a new touchstone statement called The Wildcat Way. Last year, the athletic council, comprised of all varsity head coaches, along with Athletic Director Andrew Bryan took time to develop its vision of what a true Westminster athlete should look like both in the sports arena and in the classroom. The result was the development of a touchstone statement called The Wildcat Way, which will be used to encourage and challenge our student-athletes as well as hold them accountable.

The goal is for our student-athletes to be intentional about their character development and the way they approach their athletic experience at Westminster. While national statistics show that only a small number of students will pursue an athletic career at the college or professional level, the values they develop on the field today will mold them into great husbands, wives, mothers, fathers and God-honoring citizens in the future.

THE AMAZING RACE: GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY CLINCHES STATE The Westminster varsity girls crosscountry team won the GISA AAA state championship for the first time in Westminster history. There were 14 teams in the Oct. 25 competition in Albany, Georgia.

The girls dominated the course with four runners in the top 20, including two AllState finishers, Emily Rogers (’17) and Tyra Kimbler (’17). Most impressively, every girl raced a personal record.

We asked Coach Sarah Ellis to give us an inside look at the varsity girls cross-country program this year and how she trained a three-year-old team to race their way to the top.

What were the team's goals going been 22 places slower and we still would have won. Every one of the girls did exactly what into this year?

This year, every runner wrote a list of goals at the beginning of the season. Some of those goals were team-oriented (i.e. to win the region tournament), while some of the goals were individual (i.e. race times, placement on team, finishing All-Region). Instead of simply talking about goals, the process of writing them down makes you more likely to think about them, push yourself and try to accomplish them. It was fun to hear some of the girls after the state championship say, “Well, I just accomplished my goal for next year. Guess I get to aim even higher next season!”

I told them — they kept a consistent pace the first two miles (whereas most runners go out too fast and get tired out), increased the pace some the third mile if they could and then gave it everything they had the last 400 meters (quarter mile). An ideal state situation is that every runner “peaks” at the end of the season, and we accomplished that goal – every one of the runners on the team earned a personal record, some by a minute!

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment this year besides winning the state championship?

Give us a brief summary of the team’s experience at the state meet.

The fact that everyone “peaked” at state was a huge accomplishment. After we finished the race, I knew we were close to winning, but was most satisfied by the fact that every girl Before the state meet, I told the girls that had raced a great race. Having a “great race” if every one of them had a great race, we means more than a personal record, because could be in the top three. I had no idea we race times vary based on the course and actually would all have a great race, but the competition. The girls each had a great race culmination of all of their training beforehand because each girl raced based on her specific and focus during the race allowed us to win ability—consistent mile splits, strong finishes, the championship. The girls dominated, with etc. The hardest part about training is to peak 23 points between us and the runner-up, at the right time, and we did it! which means one of our runners could have

We also have a team that is only threeyears-old. Of our top five runners (the ones who score), we have one freshman, three sophomores and one junior—two of which have only been running for two years. We still have a lot of development ahead, and that is exciting.

What do you hope to see from the program in the future?

Having two girls break 20 minutes next year would be awesome. However, I really try to emphasize that times are not everything, since they change based on elements such as the course, time of season and weather.

In the future, I just want to see every runner continue to improve.

Do you teach the studentathletes skills besides just running?

This year, I emphasized the importance of strength training. We did a lot of calisthenics and plyometrics versus going into the weight room. I think the agility gained from strength exercises with movement is helpful for facing the uneven terrain of trails (roots, hills, mud pits, etc.). It’s also fun getting to incorporate what I know about science to emphasize the importance of things like hydration and proper nutrition. A lot of kids know this is important, but don’t necessarily know why.

After a “bad” race, I will sympathize with a runner and talk about what went wrong, but then I’ll ask them, “OK, so what can we do differently next time? Or, how can we alter training?” It’s important to always seek improvement!

I also emphasize the importance of running your own race, both in life and on the crosscountry course. Some things will be easier for you, and sometimes you’ll feel like you’re working harder than everyone else. We have to be reminded that God has given each of us specific gifts. Some of those are measurable, in the form of grades or race times, but there are many gifts each of these girls have that are not tangible — the gifts of patience, being a good friend, encouragement or dedication.

You have to run your race, not another one, and you have to use your gifts, not wish you had another person’s. Just because you are the slowest or fastest person on the team doesn’t make you less or more important. The Lord gives us each separate gifts and separate roles within His Kingdom, but each is important.

What do you hope your athletes take away from their crosscountry experience?

If one of my runners tells me 10 years from now that they still enjoy running and do it on a regular basis, I would feel my mission was accomplished. During high school, a lot of kids run to stay in shape for other sports. But How do you spiritually encourage once you are in college and then beyond, it is harder to play team sports because you have your runners? to be involved in a club or coordinate getting Every day, we get to enjoy God’s creation, and people together. With running, you just put cross-country is a great way to observe nature. on your shoes and walk out the door. Fitness is such an important part of our overall and I encourage runners to enjoy running and long-term health, and running is a great, value hard work. Running is like life – you simple way to stay active. No other sport has have some hard races and some great ones. the term “runner’s high” – it is a real thing!

WILDCATS PROWL TO STATE PLAYOFFS

New beginnings led to new records for the Wildcat varsity football team during the 2014 season, including the most wins in the young program’s history and an inaugural trip to the state playoffs.

Under the direction of new Head Coach Steve Ackley, the team came out ready to train hard during the summer months, with a renewed focus on strength and conditioning.

“I believe that strength and conditioning is very important as it is the foundation in developing the whole athlete,” said Coach Ackley. “It obviously makes them bigger, faster, and stronger, but it also gives them many other intangibles that will have a resounding effect on the rest of their lives as well as on the field.”

After many great wins and a few tough losses during the regular season, the Wildcats came out on top, clinching their first-ever spot in the state playoffs.

“It felt great to lead this team to make school history,” said Coach Ackley. “The kids and coaches will have this memory forever, and it was truly a blessing from God.”

The Wildcats went on to win their firstround playoff game against Loganville Christian Academy, but suffered a tough loss in the quarterfinals against Pinewood Christian Academy. Regardless, the Wildcats ended the 2014 season with a 7-5 record, the best in the program’s five-year history.

“I would be remiss to not acknowledge the hand of God on the team and the season,” reflected Coach Ackley. “He allowed it all to happen. He did bigger things than just give us wins. I know he moved some hearts as well. The coaches and team know this for sure. I also believe that preparation through the summer was very impactful as well as previous coaches before this year who laid the foundation.”

With all but four players returning for the 2015 season, the best is yet to come for this Wildcat football team.

"I really enjoyed serving at The Master's Table,” said Leigh Blanchard (’21). “It was amazing to see how grateful some of the people were for just a simple meal. It was sad in a way to see their need, but it felt really good to be able to help them. I think it impacted them to see kids spending the day serving and witnessing for Christ. I have been praying for the people I met while we were working."

After enjoying three days at Tybee Island, Georgia, learning about marine ecosystems during their Outdoor Classroom trip, the sixthgrade class came home to Augusta, not to hit the books, but to hit the streets to serve.

On Oct. 23, the class split into four separate groups to go out into the community and make an impact for Christ. Two groups volunteered with Family Promise of Augusta to plant flowers at several of the transition houses and to clean and organize toys. Another group served meals to the homeless at The Master’s Table, while the fourth group helped organize supplies for the Bridge Ministry’s Thanksgiving coat drive.

“The sixth-grade service day is important as we continue to lay the foundation for service at our school within our student body,” said Director of Student Life Mike Freace. “We feel that in every division, it is important for us to give back to the community through service to others. Our students learn foundational Christian truths

as their leadership skills, to the next level by providing practical help to Golden Harvest by organizing the food drive.

“We hope the students see that what they do by donating to the food drive directly helps people in their community,” said fifth-grade teacher Ms. Alison Wright. “Additionally, we hope they will have heightened awareness to the needs of others.”

The food drive particularly hit home with one of the third-grade students in Mrs. Wiggin’s class.

The student donated a large number of canned goods in memory of her grandfather, who had asked that the family be generous in giving to the Golden Harvest Food Bank. They used the Lower School’s food drive as a way of honoring his request.

In 2013, the Lower School collected more than 2,300 items. In 2014, food collections amounted to over 4,300 items, with Mrs. Shaw’s fifth-grade class winning the individual class competition.

SHOWDOWN THROWDOWN BLOOD DRIVE As all Southerners know, football rivalries are a major part of culture in this part of the country.

Our students decided to turn that rivalry spirit into a friendly competition by sponsoring a blood drive with football rival Augusta Christian. On the day of the Westminster vs. Augusta Christian football game, each school hosted a blood drive on their respective campus and kept a tally of how many donors participated. The winning school would not only have the satisfaction of knowing they saved many lives in the community, but would also have bragging rights for an entire year.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Thanks to all in the Middle and Upper Schools who contributed shoe boxes and items for our 2014 Operation Christmas Child collection.

This year, Westminster donated over 200 boxes to children around the world who needed to experience a bit of Christmas cheer and the love of Jesus.

ALUMNI ON THE JOB: CAREER CONVERSATIONS IN COMMUNITY OUTREACH BY: MARY ELIZABETH GOODELL (’12) A desire to serve and influence the community and the world is a characteristic outlined in the Westminster “Portrait of a Graduate” that we strive to instill in each one of our students.

While many of our alumni volunteer in their churches and communities outside of work, a few have made it their primary profession. We caught up with two of our alumni, Danny Linsz (’88) and Libby (Gates) Daugherty (’00), who have turned their passion for service into their dream careers.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT JOB? DL: I’m the director of recruitment at Serving in Mission (SIM), and my job description is constantly evolving. We are an interdenominational and multicultural organization that responds to need, proclaims the Gospel and equips the church. The process of becoming a missionary with SIM begins when people inquire about SIM and then fill out an application, and that beginning portion is when I work with them. Most of the people who apply are those who’ve read “Radical” or gone on a mission trip and seen something God has used to turn their lives upside down, and they realize they don’t want the American Dream anymore.

LD: I am currently working as a social worker for an adoption agency, Lifeline Children Services. In this capacity, I work with families through the process of adoption (both domestic and international), including their home study, education necessary to parent children from places of harm and supporting them during their waiting period, travel and then post placement.

I will also be working with birth mothers in the Augusta area who desire to place their children for adoption through Christian counseling, connecting them with needed services, helping them choose an adoptive family and supporting them through the process of adoption and afterward.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS MINISTRY IN THE FIRST PLACE? DL: I love kids and families. I ran a tutoring program for at-risk kids at a middle school in Wheaton and really enjoyed that. My church took three different trips to Cuba, and I was able to go on all three. That’s really what God used to help my wife and me see ourselves doing ministry as adults.

LD: I have always been drawn to adoption because I have two siblings (Cullen and Emily) who are adopted. Liberty University has a home for unwed mothers and an adoption agency that work hand-in-hand, and when I shadowed a social worker there, I immediately thought, “This would be my dream job.” I felt that with the gifts the Lord has given me to serve and my passion for orphan care, social work was the best vocation for me.

WHAT HAS BEEN A PARTICULARLY MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE HAD IN YOUR WORK? DL: I got to go to Ethiopia this summer with my family to participate in a ministry called Sports Friends, which uses sports to reach kids and their families. In Ethiopia, tons of kids, some Muslim or Orthodox, would come every week to play soccer. I would host church teams from the U.S. who would come to help with the program and debrief with them every day during their visit.

LD: The most rewarding case of my career so far was when I was able to find an adoptive home for a sibling group of four who had been in numerous foster homes for six years. For many children who I had the privilege of working with, I was the only stable person in their life. Their foster home, school, therapist and friends were constantly changing. Although I was often the “punching bag” because I represented an agency that stepped in when their world fell apart, my kids knew I really loved and cared for them.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A STUDENT WHO IS LOOKING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN YOUR FIELD? DL: As young people, they should find out if they love Jesus or if they love missions. Missions is something cool and fun, but it doesn’t last.

I would encourage people to love Jesus first, because you’re not always going to love missions.

Love Jesus first, then there will be missions wherever you go.

LD: Social work is a difficult field because it is often a very emotionally-draining and thankless job. However, it is a wonderful career if you want to be challenged and really make a difference in the lives of those who are vulnerable and needy in our community.

ABOUT DANNY LINSZ (’88): After Westminster, Danny went on to study youth ministries and adolescent studies at Moody Bible Institute and Judson College.

He then worked at Franklin Middle School in Wheaton, Illinois, for two years before moving to Malawi, Africa, to work at ABC Christian Academy. He has been with Serving in Mission (SIM) for 14 years and is currently living in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife, Corrie, and sons Tyler (12), Joshua (10), Samuel (8) and Amos (3).

ABOUT LIBBY (GATES) DAUGHERTY (’00): Libby graduated from Liberty University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After serving in missions in South Africa and Qatar, she went on to earn her master’s degree in social work from Valdosta State University. Libby has worked in foster care and adoption for the Division of Family and Children Services as well as a medical social worker at University Hospital. She currently serves as an adoption worker for Lifeline Children’s Services and lives in Augusta with her husband, Patrick, and daughter, Madelyn.

until he graduates, Shayne hopes to implement some of the same mentoring principles he experienced with Keith. His desire is to integrate Westminster students into his project through visits to Augusta and student trips to Clemson, where he will provide them research and service experience. Time will tell how both Keith’s and Shayne’s dedication to giving back will benefit many future Wildcats!

Keith Hearon (’05) is currently performing postdoctoral research at the Langer Lab at MIT, where he is working to create new materials for medical technology. In addition to his biomedical research, he also co-founded a startup company, Poly6 Technologies, in 2013 based on a technology he invented. The students said the most important thing they learned from Jackson was how to share their faith in actions and words through their daily lives. The power of the Holy Spirit and God’s love was always present in Jackson’s words and actions, according to the pair, who say they appreciated his candidness, which was evidence of the Lord’s presence in his life.

Not only was Jackson able to act as a role model to younger Wildcats, but he was also able to reminisce with them about his time at Westminster. They shared common stories about fun times in Mr. Rich’s class and about winning soccer state championships under the leadership of Coach Mike Freace, as well as discussing how the student body dynamics had shifted throughout the years. His advice and practical modeling of a godly lifestyle provided another great example to Westminster students of how to carry the principles of faith into life past high school.

Both Keith’s and Jackson’s influence on other students and alumni demonstrates the impact that Westminster can have. The bond created by being a Wildcat is intangible, something that far outlasts graduation and can provide crucial assistance down the road. 2010 Robert MacDonell (’10) received a full scholarship to Georgia Regents University’s Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in August 2014. He is one of six inaugural Harrison Scholars and one of three to receive a full scholarship. The scholarship is being funded by a historic gift from the late Dr. J. Harold Harrison, a proud MCG alumnus and former chairman of the MCG Foundation.

In June, he began work as a materials engineer for the United States Navy Naval Air Systems Command at the Cherry Point Marine Air Station near the coast of North Carolina. Rob’s specialty is composite materials that are used on military aircraft.

Rebecca Shine (’10) and her tennis partner, Julia Fellerhoff, ranked second in the national 2013-14 mid-year Division 1 women's doubles rankings. Rebecca finished her collegiate tennis career with the most singles wins (104) and the second-most doubles wins (102) in the 50-year history of the University of Louisville’s women’s tennis program. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance in December 2014 and accepted a job with PNC bank in Pittsburgh.

2012 On June 4, 2014, Houston Maund (’12), along with Seth Confer and Sean Confer, was honored by the American Red Cross with the Fire Rescue Hero Award at the third annual Heroes Breakfast. The trio helped five people, two of whom were on oxygen, and four dogs escape from a burning home on Shadowmoor Drive in February 2014.

2011 For the past three summers, Isaac Halverson (’11) interned as a policy analyst at the Savannah River National Lab. His work mainly consisted of conducting research, writing reports and giving presentations on certain topics relevant to nuclear weapons nonproliferation. Isaac is a senior at Wofford College and spent the fall 2014 semester studying abroad in London.

2002 Fred Matthew Kennedy (’02) of New York City passed away on August 11, 2014. He was the son of Jaqueline Phenix Kennedy and the late F. Frederick Kennedy Jr. The Westminster community mourns the passing of Raymond C. Jackson. Mr. Jackson served as Westminster's headmaster from 1976 to 1977 and returned to teach math from 1989 to 1992. His grandchildren also attended Westminster. After observing firsthand during classroom visits the compassion and devotion with which the faculty taught, the Campbells were sold on Westminster and continue to be impressed by the personal relationships that each teacher builds with his or her students.

“There have been very specific examples of teachers engaging not only the minds of my children but also their hearts,” she explains.

“Teachers have prayed individually with my children regarding different issues. I am very grateful for the desire of the faculty to help raise up children who can engage the world with their heads and their hearts!”

“When we moved to Augusta almost 20 years ago, our first son was only six months old,” Pam explained. “We eventually started looking for a babysitter, and a student from Westminster was recommended. We were so impressed with her that we promised once our children were old enough, we would look into sending our children to Westminster.”

The impact that babysitter had on the Willis family has since led to a relationship with the school that goes beyond the basic level of

parent involvement.

“I want to be as involved as possible in coming alongside the teachers and staff and encouraging them as they educate my kids,” said Pam. During her second term on the board, Pam is serving on the Facilities Committee and also as board secretary. She is excited about being involved in the development of Westminster’s new strategic plan.

“I consider it a privilege to sit alongside these men and women and help make decisions that won’t just impact my kids, but kids for generations to come,” she said.

“When I first walked in the door for a tour, I felt so welcomed and like it was home,” reflected Ashley.

She now sees the excitement she and her husband had upon enrolling their children at Westminster reflected each school day.

“It has been exciting to watch the enthusiasm my children have about school and to watch

them grow in their faith,” she said. “It is rare to find a school where Christ is glorified, your children are loved and there is a high academic standard.”

Ashley looks forward to her new role on the Finance Committee on the Westminster board, an opportunity she said she couldn’t pass up.

“I felt God had provided me an amazing opportunity to be a part of a group of people that love the school and want the best for its future,” she said.

ROD BAYLISS Spouse: Jocelyn Children: Roderick (’16) and Benjamin (’21) Church: Revivify Church Rod and his family have been a part of the Westminster community for the past three and a half years — ever since moving to Augusta for his wife to complete her residency. After hearing about the great, Christ-centered education from his brotherin-law, a Westminster alumnus, choosing Westminster for their children was a nobrainer.

Rod has been involved at the school as a field trip chaperone and Booster Club volunteer and looks forward to adding the role of board member to the list. As a member of the Facilities Committee, he hopes to use his God-given talents to help fine tune Westminster’s next strategic plan to further Christ’s kingdom.

ALLEN GRINALDS Spouse: Mimi (’97) Children: Allen (’23), Charlie (’25), Porter (’26), Mimi Barrett (’29), Southy (future Wildcat) and expecting #6 in January 2015 Church: First Presbyterian Church of Augusta Between Mimi being a Westminster alumna and having many relatives in town, moving to Augusta in 2013 felt like moving home for Allen and his family. Westminster was the obvious choice for their children since Allen and Mimi wanted their children to receive a Christian education.

The Grinalds’ immediately plugged themselves into the fabric of Westminster, with Mimi volunteering in the classroom, working on the Alumni Committee and chairing the 2014 Fall Festival. When Allen was asked to serve on the board, he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to play a more

substantial role in shaping the future of the school.

“Previous board members at Westminster have contributed mightily in the past,” he said. “Today, we are reaping the fruit of their labor. I am excited about contributing to the school today in order to execute the vision we have for Westminster not only for this generation of students, but for the Westminster students of tomorrow.”

That trademark of the school became even more evident upon hearing the faculty speak at the Open House the Phelans attended.

WESTMINSTER APPOINTS NEW BOARD CHAIR Dr. Blanche Conger has been appointed chair of the Westminster Schools of Augusta board of trustees and will serve a three-year term. She has been a member of the board since the fall of 2013.

A lifelong resident of the Augusta-Aiken area, Blanche has been involved in the local community and at Westminster for quite some time. She served as a Bible study teacher and ministry leader in Aiken for many years while also working as a USA swimming official and meet administrator for several Georgia state games and championships.

In 2012, she chaired the Just Give Me Jesus Augusta revival team, and she currently writes a regular feature article for Faith Magazine. She also serves as a leader in the Christian Medical and Dental Association Side by Side Ministry.

While Blanche and her husband, Preston, could have sent their two children to a number of schools, they chose Westminster for its academic excellence and Christian commitment.

“We wanted Jack and Meggie to have the best opportunity to develop spiritually, academically and socially…in that order,” said John.

Even though this is only their second year at Westminster, the Phelans feel as if they have been a part of the Westminster family their whole lives. John immediately became involved on campus by cooking hotdogs and hamburgers at the football games and is now looking forward to growing his involvement as a member of the board’s Finance Committee.

“I am excited about having a part in growing Christ’s kingdom through the Westminster mission,” he said.

When he’s not at work or volunteering at the school, you can find John cycling, playing drums, cooking and watching his kids compete on the Westminster field.

“We were especially interested in offering our children an opportunity to be involved with the fine arts, to take Latin and to have teachers who were truly experts in their fields,” she said. “We also felt that an environment where our children would be surrounded by Christian authority figures would nourish them as they grew into young adults.”

While her children were in school, Blanche chaperoned field trips, volunteered at the Spring Festival and, with the help of a fellow parent, founded the Westminster swim team.

However, she envisions her role on the Westminster board of trustees as being drastically different than the role she played while her children were in school.

“Now that our children are grown and gone,” she said, “my interest in the school is no longer that of a parent, but that of a Christian and member of the Augusta community. God calls us to advance Christ’s kingdom in our city, and one important way of doing that is to support ministries like Westminster Schools.”

DEVELOPING NEWS I don’t think anyone can say they don’t like a good celebration, and that was evident when we gathered together at the Wildcat Connection in September to celebrate the official opening of Wheeler Field and our two new playgrounds! Thanks to generous gifts to the Bridge Campaign, the nearly four acres have been transformed into much-needed space where we can continue to celebrate daily as this area is used for P.E. and recess during the school day and sports practices after school.

This beautiful new field also allowed us to bring back the Wildcat Connection that we were unable to have last year due to space constraints. Regardless of the venue, the Wildcat Connection is always a great event.

For those of us who have been around for a while, Wheeler Field was reminiscent of the days when we had Wildcat Connection on the soccer field. It was so enjoyable to have the space and freedom for our kids to run and play in a safe environment, allowing parents to truly visit and enjoy each other’s company.

The new field also gave us the opportunity to replace and expand a very outdated play area behind Pamplin Hall and tailor that area to be used by our prekindergarten through second-grade students. An additional playground for our third- through fifthgraders was added to the area adjacent to Wheeler Field. These new areas have already enhanced many aspects of the Westminster experience.

We are so grateful for the Harrison Family Foundation and the family of Scott Fitzgerald for making the new playgrounds possible.
