FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL How do we measure success?

A

s a school, we could look at facts, figures, and accolades. For example, Westminster’s Boys Soccer team was named State Champion for the fourth consecutive year and the Girls Tennis team won its second state title. The Fine Arts department celebrated GISA State championships in Debate, Literary Team and One-Act play. The class of 2017 now attends 27 colleges in 11 different states receiving over three million dollars, not including state lottery money, in college scholarships. The high-standards of our collegeprep program and the achievements of our young men and women are recognized by the fact that 70% were accepted to at least one or more “Top 100 Colleges” as defined by U.S. News & World Report.

While these are all great factors by which we can measure our success, more importantly, we are successful by staying true to our mission. By keeping Jesus at the center of all programs, we aim to develop excellence and Christ-like character in our students through our academic, arts, and athletic programs. Because of their time at Westminster, our graduates will significantly influence our culture and the world for Jesus.

Soon after our most recent graduation, the dream of having a new building across the creek was realized. The doors to Knox Hall opened on Aug. 9 with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Knox Hall provides us space to break bread together in a new cafeteria, worship and pray together in the commons area, build community and learn together in a new academic resource center.

Knox Hall also provides new opportunities to communicate, create, and think critically in new classrooms and challenges us to master the tools of a digital age in our new technology and computer labs. God has certainly blessed Westminster with a beautiful facility for the entire community.

In addition to the opening of Knox Hall, two initiatives were launched to enhance the educational experience including: • a drop-day class rotation for both the Middle and Upper Schools that offers balance and allows each division to be on the same daily schedule.

• the 1:World program in which each Middle School student was given a MacBook Air to develop and acquire new learning skills.

The 1:World program emphasizes the skills needed for our students to not only engage with each other, but creates opportunities for engaging with the digital world and a larger curriculum. I am excited to see how this program grows into the Upper School over the next few years.

Each year the Upper School Student Leadership Team selects a biblical theme around which the entire school rallies.

“Unashamed” is this year’s theme based on 2 Timothy 1:8-9.

At Opening Convocation, the Upper School student leaders challenged the student body to live unashamed of the gospel message of Jesus Christ: unashamed of pursuing excellence in academics, arts and athletics; and unashamed to nurture and respect their relationships with peers in building each other up in word and good deeds.

This year, there is also a renewed enthusiasm on campus as the senior class has challenged the student body to work in teams to create a spirit of unity. I am proud of the efforts of our outstanding faculty and these amazing young people to motivate and encourage each other to be the hands and feet of the body of Christ.

So going back to the question about measuring success?

Certainly, all of the facts and figures we can quote about our students’ accomplishments speak for themselves. However, God’s transformative power working among and within these students is immeasurable and speaks louder than any facts or figures ever could.

Please join with me in praying for God’s Spirit to give us wisdom and Christ-like character, celebrating our achievements while supporting the school with our time, talents, and financial gifts.

Spouse: Jennifer Children: Jack ’20, Mae Wallace, Clara, Isabella Church: First Presbyterian Church of Augusta Mr. Baker is looking forward to serving as a trustee, particularly during this time of growth in the Augusta area. “Westminster has an opportunity to reach out to the community and be a positive education option for those coming to the area.” He will serve on the Facilities Committee and looks forward to long-range planning for the campus, particularly as we settle into Knox Hall and meet the challenges of maintaining the old, while planning for the new. “There really is no other campus around as unique as Westminster. We are truly nestled in the woods!”

The challenging environment, Christian values, and nurturing environment all led her to enrolling her daughters at Westminster. She said she is very grateful for the education her daughters have received, especially for their academic achievement and success, the individualized attention they receive, and for the faculty and staff and their love of the Lord.

He is honored to serve in both capacities and looks forward to helping the school thrive. The combination of the Christian environment and strong academic program are what led him to Westminster. Once here, he couldn’t help but develop an appreciation for the beautiful campus, the faculty, and the athletics program. He said he felt very much a part of the Westminster family from the beginning.

Spouse: Amy Children: Marshall ’12, Sam ’14, Catherine ’16, Caroline ’18 Thomas ’21, Church: First Presbyterian Church of Augusta Mr. Paulk considers serving on the board as an opportunity to provide counsel and oversight to ensure that future students benefit from a Westminster education, just as his children have. He particularly appreciates the faculty and staff and their concern for each student. “It’s clear that they are truly invested in their students with the amount of time they spend not only in the classroom, but outside as well.” He will serve on the Governance Committee which will thoroughly review and update the by-laws this year to ensure they are consistent with the direction of the school.

A proud Westminster parent since 1999, he appreciates the Christian worldview and college preparatory curriculum and most of all, how the school loves on the students. He serves on the Finance Committee and will work to ensure that Westminster continues to handle its finances in a fiscally responsible manner that honors God.

She was home-schooled before enrolling and “the Christian worldview taught here was the right place for her to continue to grow.” He considers having a place where kids can receive a Christ-centered education very important. He is looking forward to serving on the board and the Finance Committee, “to make sure we continue to grow and thrive” so that his children and those in the community always have a place where they will be equipped to lead lives for Jesus.

T

o capture the history and culture of Westminster Schools of Augusta, one need look no further than its most ardent supporter, David Hanks. Since 1978, he has dedicated countless hours to the improvement of the school. David lives and breathes Westminster, and every person who has walked on campus is better because of his faithfulness to the school’s mission and his passion for its people.

I first met David before joining Westminster as a kindergarten student. Our families were friends, and we attended First Presbyterian Church together. Early on, my experience with David consisted of routine greetings on Sunday mornings. As I progressed through Westminster, however, it became apparent that David was interested in me on a more fundamental level – I was part of his Westminster family.

He cared for my well-being, my success, and sought to invest in me as he did with his own family. Our conversations transitioned from routine to the reality of what I was experiencing as a student and athlete. At first I didn’t think much of seeing him at the occasional home game, but when he could recount specific statistics of a soccer or basketball game, it was obvious that he hardly missed a single one. He asked about my experiences in the classroom, my interactions with teachers, my plans for the summer, and much more.

To my delight, our interaction did not end with my graduation.

He regularly called me throughout college, intentionally sought me out when he heard I was in town for the weekend, and constantly asked my thoughts on how Westminster could improve on serving its current students and alumni. David sought to know me and to invest in my growth as a student and as a believer, as he continues to do today.

I use my relationship with David as a personal example of the many ways he has impacted every aspect of Westminster. Both formally and informally, he has served the school and everyone involved with it. David served as a trustee for many years and currently serves as an emeritus trustee. He is a persistent fundraiser focusing on all institutional needs, including the Westminster Fund, capital campaigns, and transformative gifts.

When several of us started the Alumni Association a few years ago, David was one of the first people to call and express his excitement over the new initiative. He has hardly missed a

When I was asked to write a “tribute” to David Hanks, I must admit that I fumbled around in my mind on how I was going to put into words the devotion he has to Westminster and the love he has for its people. To try to summarize what I felt and then marry it to what I know others feel about him seemed like an impossible task.

In an effort to understand how David views his work on behalf of our school, I began by reviewing our mission statement. Then it became obvious: David’s real tribute is not words on a page – it is his eternal impact on the people within the Westminster community. Our mission statement is simple, yet provocative: “to glorify God by providing an excellent education that equips students to live extraordinary lives for Jesus Christ.” Because of David’s vision, and so many others like him, including our incredible faculty, administration, and staff throughout the past 45 years, all alumni can rest assured that we received an excellent education.

David’s leadership at Westminster glorifies God. His determination to invest not only in a superb classroom education, but also in the personal education and empowerment of young people to live extraordinarily for Christ is, in my opinion, one of the foremost means to glorify God and leave a lasting impact on each product of the Westminster community.

In speaking with alumni across all ages, it is clear that David’s influence played a positive role in their education and faith well beyond their years in the classroom. Such a fierce determination to improve the lives of young people is truly one of David’s most indelible characteristics.

The real tribute to David Hanks, therefore, is the enduring Westminster community. No words can truly describe the years of devotion and love he has poured into its people. No article will capture the countless feelings of alumni, whether student, faculty, or staff, toward a man who has given the school so much. The lasting relationships formed at Westminster, the dedication to improving our own communities and families in the name of Christ, and our eternal gratefulness for a Christian education is the best tribute he could ever receive.

For your many years of service, which we are confident will continue for many more, all of us at Westminster thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You and your dear wife Betty have and will continue to have a lasting impact on our lives.

THE WORLD AT THEIR FINGERTIPS

T

he first day of school is always filled with excitement. The halls that lay hollow and desolate during the summer months once again overflow with energy as students embark upon new beginnings and new adventures. However, a different sense of excitement filled the halls of Westminster’s Middle School on the first day this year, because students knew they would be pioneers of the 1:World program.

Westminster’s mission is “to glorify God by providing an excellent education that equips students to live extraordinary lives for Jesus Christ.” And, for the past 45 years, Westminster has earned a strong reputation in the CSRA for doing just that. However, as society has raced forward and moved from the “Industrial Age” into the “Digital Age,” schools across America are realizing that curriculum and instruction must be adapted to help students develop the digital literacy skills they will need to thrive in the 21st century.

Understanding the times in which we are living and guided by the initiatives of our “Realize 2020” strategic plan, Westminster has made another giant leap forward with the launch of the 1:World program. On the first day of the 2017-18 school year, every Middle School student was issued a new MacBook Air to be used at school and home to enhance their learning experience. Westminster has embarked upon a new era, and the rollout of this program is the embodiment of two years of careful planning by the administrative and technology teams.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18) The words of this Proverb have proven true in countless schools who were quick to adopt a 1:1 laptop initiative, only to find that they lacked a vision for what they wanted technology to accomplish in the curriculum. When Westminster’s technology team began planning the 1:World program in August 2015, they did not want to repeat those mistakes. So, the team began by formulating a vision.

Most schools refer to their technology integration programs as a 1:1 initiative (one laptop in the hands of every student), but Westminster’s technology team didn’t want the primary focus of the 1:1 initiative to be on a device. So, two years ago, they drafted a “Visions for Technology Use” statement that has guided every step of the planning for the 1:World program.

“We wanted our program to empower students to use technology to make an impact on the world around them for the sake of Christ,” says Micah Waldecker, technology coordinator.

No matter where students choose to go to school, they are going to be trained to use technology. But Westminster’s 1:World program is unique in that it introduces students to technology through a Christian worldview. We aim to teach students to harness the power of technology as a means to impact their local and global communities.

Once this vision statement was adopted, the technology team was ready to move forward. They worked together to create a cohesive set of technology standards for PK3 - Grade 12 that would guide technology integration across all three divisions.

Jenni Shaver, Lower School librarian and computer teacher, played a large role in creating the Lower School technology standards. From there, Craig Ham, Middle and Upper School computer science teacher, Micah Waldecker and Kendra Sue Finch worked to create technology standards for the Middle and Upper School students, which prepared them to take another huge step forward.

Years ago, many school leaders thought that putting a device in the hands of every student would magically transform and improve education. But, far too many schools learned the hard way that technology itself cannot improve, enhance, or redefine learning in the classroom. Technology can only render meaningful dividends when it is integrated into the curriculum by teachers who have been trained to use it well.

So, the technology team decided the next step in the rollout of the 1:World program would be to train teachers to integrate technology in meaningful ways across the curriculum. Supported by the school’s administrative team, Westminster embarked upon what may very well be the most aggressive professional development initiative in the school’s history.

Between May 2016 and May 2017, every teacher at Westminster was required to complete nine hours of technology-related professional development classes. These classes were designed and led by the technology team and were offered free of charge.

The technology team worked together to create workshops that would prepare teachers to effectively integrate technology in their curriculum. As a result of this gargantuan effort, the teachers at Westminster earned the equivalent of 441 hours of technology-related professional development in just one year.

This ground-breaking accomplishment was celebrated during the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, and all teachers who earned more than the required number of technology training classes were recognized with certificates. Each teacher who went far and above the required nine hours of training was recognized with a certificate and a gift card, generously donated by a Westminster parent. Among those recognized were Leisa Tebbs, Sandy Buchanan, Theresa Bone, and Tanya Marshall for completing 12 or more hours of technology training. Amy Shillingsburg completed 15 hours of training and

received a $100 gift card and a certificate of achievement for her accomplishment. But Westminster’s teachers aren’t done modeling lifelong learning; they will complete another six hours of training sessions before the end of the 2017-18 school year, because they are committed to preparing their students for college and life beyond.

If you walk through the halls of the Middle School during the school day, you will notice that technology has, in fact, already begun to enhance the curriculum. The entire Middle School team is utilizing Google Classroom to familiarize students with the online learning management systems they will be expected to use in college. Students in seventh grade Bible classes are recording and editing green screen videos to demonstrate what they have learned from the Book of Daniel. Math students are watching pre-recorded videos of their lessons, so they can learn at their own pace. These are just a few examples of how the laptops are being used in the curriculum, and I truly believe that the best is yet to come, particularly with cyber education.

Recently, Westminster officially partnered with the National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center (NICERC) to begin integrating more STEM and computer science units seamlessly across the curriculum. NICERC donated 10 programmable Arduino Bots that will be used in Middle School robotics classes and with cryptology clubs. These robots will also be available for checkout from the future Makerspace in Knox Hall so that all Westminster students can learn to program them. Perhaps most importantly, in late October faculty members in all three divisions participated in training sessions led by NICERC to learn how to effectively integrate STEM and cyber activities into their curriculum. Upper School teachers learned to code by programming robots, while Lower and Middle School teachers designed a prototype of a vessel that could be used to airdrop supplies to refugees around the world. They tested and improved their vessel by putting a raw egg in their prototype and dropping it from a height of 30 feet.

Due to our ongoing partnership with NICERC and the great things we’ve already been implementing here at Westminster, there’s no doubt our students will be equipped with the digital literacy skills they will need to thrive when they leave Westminster.

REGINA FRANKLIN: LEADING THROUGH THE LENS OF SCRIPTURE

W

hen Regina Franklin first attended a Westminster graduation ceremony, becoming a Westminster faculty member was the furthest thing from her mind. Fast forward 20 years, and her role has expanded from teacher, to academic support staff member, all the way to assistant principal. As she has stepped into leadership, both in her own classroom and over various grade levels, she has continued to model the kind of cultural engagement displayed by the men of Issachar in 1 Chronicles — she reads the signs of the times and provides wise direction based on peace and wisdom.

Mrs. Franklin’s journey to Westminster began at a psychiatric hospital, where she taught a variety of students ages 5 to 17 who came to the facility for daytime treatment. Through her interactions with them, she learned valuable lessons about classroom management and about adolescence, development, and the hearts of students as they mature. Her next step took her to Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School, where she taught for three years before coming to Westminster. Mrs. Franklin’s first chapter at Westminster concluded when she chose to stay home for several years with her two children, Charis and Micah. She returned in 2009 as a valuable asset to the English Department and, later, to the administration.

While at home with her children, Mrs. Franklin discovered another outlet for her skills in English and education. After reading Nicole Johnson’s “Fresh-Brewed Life,” she was struck by the chapter on beauty and was inspired to develop the ideas further. Her passion, research, and heart for ministry culminated in the publication of her first book, “Who Calls Me Beautiful” in 2004. “Who Calls Me Beautiful” invites women to explore the idea of beauty through the lens of Scripture while sorting through the cultural messages they receive in order to discover truth. Her book was published in five languages and led to multiple speaking engagements and radio interviews. In 2007, she published her second book, “Designed by God,” which further tackles the issues of beauty, modesty, and self-image for a teenage audience by challenging them to look to Scripture for a healthy perspective as they navigate adolescence. She continues to contribute monthly to “Our Daily Journey,” an online devotional with international readership and print publication in the UK and Singapore.

Mrs. Franklin’s desire to serve and develop women allows her to partner well with her husband Scott, a full-time pastor.

Together, they are church planters, channeling their desire to raise up spiritual mothers and fathers in the church who can pass along the truths of Jesus to the next generation. As she

and Scott serve together, she hopes to continue to train not only church members but leaders who can propel the church forward both at home and across the world.

Mrs. Franklin’s depth, influence, and wisdom are reflected just as clearly in the classroom as they are in her activities outside of Westminster. Although she wants her students to grasp the material they experience, she is more determined that they learn how to think wisely about any topics they may face. Whether she asks her students about the moral dilemmas found in “Huckleberry Finn” or gives examples of sacrificial love before teaching “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” she consistently strives to communicate that literature is the story of humanity and only further proves that faith is real and relevant.

As she interacts with students in her various roles, she makes it a priority to push them to approach their stress and workload with a biblical view. She counsels them to pray through decisions, whether they involve college choices or class scheduling options. She encourages them to see faith in every literary work they study, regardless of the author, the time period, or the genre. She strives to pique their curiosity through her teaching style, but, at the same time, trains them to practice the discipline of being engaged with their surroundings. To her, education is spiritual and holistic, not just subject-specific.

As Mrs. Franklin has studied culture over the years, both as an author and a mentor, her wisdom has impacted her students beyond measure. She is truly an example of the spiritual mothers she strives to cultivate — encouraging her students to think critically in their study of literature, but more importantly in their approach to life.

The Westminster family is incredibly grateful for Mrs. Franklin’s sacrificial service and proud to honor her for her character and her influence.

A TASTE OF CHINA Remembering former Headmaster Steve O’Neil’s admonition to experience education in a foreign country, computer science teacher Craig Ham seized the opportunity.

I

n July, Mr. Ham embarked on a month-long adventure in China that allowed him to explore various regions, the culture, historical sites and landmarks, and authentic Chinese cuisine while teaching for Learn to Rise (L2R), a company that provides numerous STEM-based camps throughout China that emphasize robotics and computer programming and are taught by American teachers.

The first leg of his adventure began in Changsha, China, at a 10day camp hosted by Ningxiang Country Garden School. It was a typical educational summer camp with students and teachers housed in dorms, classes during the day, and fun activities in the evenings. Mr. Ham was assigned to teach English writing and reading, leadership classes, and Scratch, a programming language developed at MIT. He had approximately 25 students in sixth through ninth grade, and noted that this was his first experience working with such a wide age-range in one class.

He said it gave him a better appreciation for the teachers who taught in one-room schoolhouses generations ago. Fortunately, a Chinese teaching assistant (TA) was available the whole time to assist in the classroom with any translation issues.

While his teaching abilities were put to the test, and resources were limited, what most surprised him were the accommodations.

More specifically, the traditional Chinese hard beds that he slept on, with a HARD! flat surface and little padding, is one feature of his trip that he remembers with little fondness!

Following the closing ceremony for his first camp, the teachers and aides set out for a week of sightseeing, while Mr. Ham was hand-picked by the head of L2R, Mrs. Rong, to present the “5Es Learning Model” with a co-teacher in two different settings. The Five Es, which stands for Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate, is a very different learning model for China.

The first presentation was to a group of teachers at Harbour School in Shenzhen, which involved a four-hour train ride from Changsa on a maglev train (magnetic levitation train), a form of transportation that is not available in the U.S. Traveling at speeds approaching 200 mph, he was impressed by the speed and epic scenery along the way. The second setting involved traveling by air to Qingdao, a city in eastern Shandong Province on the east coast of China, where he presented to summer camp students and their parents at Qingdao University. After finishing the presentations, he was free to travel on his own.

Mr. Ham had the opportunity to travel twice more on electric trains from Qingdao to Beijing, and later from Beijing to Guangzhou, which was a nine-hour trip with breathtaking rural scenery and very long tunnels! It was in Beijing that he toured several of the most well-known attractions in China such as the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, commonly known as the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, Ming Tombs, and Beijing Olympic Park, where the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics took place.

Since he doesn’t speak or understand Chinese except “hello,” “thank you,” and “how are you?”, he wasn’t able to follow his tour guide’s narration. He relied heavily on Google Translate, which helped tremendously in finding his way around and translating printed menus. He also said that it wasn’t hard to find someone to help translate for him in most of his interactions.

His final teaching assignment was in Guangzhou at the Guangzhou Science Center, a facility that was impressive and could’ve easily fit in at Disney World. His teaching assignment was the same as the first camp in Changsha, except this was a five-day camp instead of 10, the students were in second through ninth grade, and they were housed in a hotel with more comfortable beds! In Guangzhou, he spent two days with a local host family and thoroughly enjoyed the Chimelong Safari Park, a Pearl River boat cruise, and a visit to the historic Shamian City island.

Mr. Ham said there definitely were some pleasant surprises and a few frustrations along his travels, but nothing that would prevent him from doing it again. One of his most pleasant discoveries was the relationship people have with food in China.

He was amazed at the diversity of ingredients and flavors, and at how fresh and inexpensive everything was. Many of us simplify Chinese food to chow mein, fried rice, and sweet and sour chicken, but this is definitely not what Mr. Ham experienced in his travels. He enjoyed countless dishes and was open to try anything new including the traditional Chinese Hot Pot, with bright, crisp, fresh vegetables, cow and pig organs, and thinly sliced meats.

Overall he said it was a great experience, and he is looking forward to returning in the future.

He was equally amazed at the parallels in educating students, whether they are Chinese or American students. They are all excited and intrigued by computers and electronics. They

In May, 46 members of the Class of 2017 received their diplomas at the 35th annual Westminster Commencement Ceremony at First Presbyterian Church of Augusta.

GRADUATES FILLED WITH GRATITUDE; CHARGED TO LOVE

ratitude is often a theme at many graduation ceremonies and this year was no exception for Westminster. Salutatorian Elizabeth Carter opened the program with remarks about her experience, highlighting the challenges she faced as a transfer student from a public school and recognizing that the day was not just about celebrating the students, but about showing gratitude for all those who helped them get to where they are, especially parents and teachers.

“We can look back now and say, ‘Hey, we did that.’ All the long hours of studying, hard practices, and early mornings were worth it. But in our reminiscing, let’s not forget to acknowledge everyone who made it possible for us to say that. Because what we did and who enabled us to do it are so worthy of our celebration and recognition,” Elizabeth said.

Head of School Brian Case followed with his own gratitude for parents and their partnership, patience, and prayers; for students who “finished well;” for faculty for loving the students well and challenging them in every arena; and for the trustees and their ongoing work and sacrifice. He also presented Stephen Merwin from the Class of 1994 with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

In his remarks, Stephen also focused on gratitude. He claimed that he didn’t deserve the credit, thanking his parents; his wife; the fellowship, faithful guidance, and preaching at First Presbyterian Church; and the teachers at Westminster.

“Together the teachers were firm stakes in the ground against which I could lean until I was strong enough to grow in my own direction,” Stephen said.

His concluding comment was the most compelling of all. “The picture of my life and in all our lives has a clear theme: All honor and glory must be laid at Christ’s feet.”

Valedictorian Holly Criss focused on legacy in her remarks, first acknowledging the legacy that Westminster has carved into the students. “You have imbued us with foundations of faith, pride in our work, and the knowledge that the faculty and staff care so unbelievably much,” she said.

Holly paused to allow fellow classmates to offer “a few things back” through an open mic forum to thank each Upper School teacher for their support, an incredibly meaningful and heartfelt display of gratitude.

“Together the teachers were firm stakes in the ground against which I could lean until I was strong enough to grow in my own direction.”

Holly concluded her speech by charging the class to make their own legacy a good one. “Remember to serve and carry God’s legacy with you” and “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Heb 12:1), she said.

Dr. Steve Letchford, whose life’s work exemplifies living an extraordinary life for Jesus Christ, gave the Commencement address. He, along with his wife Sherri and their four children, left Augusta in 1998 to serve in remote Zambia for eight years.

Then they relocated to Kenya where he is now working as a doctor at Kijabe Hospital, which is a ministry of the Africa Inland Church. For the past 17 years, his family ministry focus has been to disciple, mentor, and train African health care professionals to show Christ’s love and grace, through compassionate and loving health care, especially for the poor.

In his remarks, Dr. Letchford focused on the importance of love and living life big by referencing 1 John 4:7, “Let us love one another because love is from God;” 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain, faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love;” and Nelson Mandela, who said, “There is no passion to be found in playing small, in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” He tied them all together by saying that “loving others as much as you love yourself, and loving God more than you love anything is the key to living life big.” He then shared two situations that occurred in Africa that illustrate the incredibly powerful impact love can have, no matter how dire the situation.

He concluded with a reminder that learning to love doesn’t just happen, just like the sweet little old lady doesn’t just become sweet when she gets old. She spent her whole lifetime becoming sweet. “You will become tomorrow what you are becoming today,” he said. His charge for the class: “Start loving today!”

The 46 graduates of 2017 have now joined 995 other Westminster alumni, all of whom have been given the tools to live extraordinary lives for Jesus Christ. We look forward to seeing what they will do!

REDUCING WASTE IN STORMWATER LEADS TO GOLD

S

hortly after graduation, I was presented with the Girl Scout Gold Award, the most prestigious award and the highest achievement that a Girl Scout can earn. Open only to girls in high school, this award is the most difficult to earn—in which you’re challenged to change the world—or at least a small corner of it.

This award was the culmination of 13 years of work including the completion of 80 hours of community service, leadership skills, and leading and implementing a project that provides sustainable impact on a community. While this initially seemed daunting, thanks to my time in Girl Scout Troop 5775 and having numerous opportunities to lead at Westminster, I was equipped with the skills and passion to impact North Augusta’s stormwater system.

As an aspiring environmental engineer, I chose to address the lack of knowledge concerning the stormwater infrastructure in North Augusta and its impact while emphasizing the maintenance of these systems to amplify the area’s health and beauty. By updating and redesigning a forebay (the part of the pond that filters water, usually with rocks or plants) in a local stormwater detention pond, I helped reduce waste in a nearby stream, and at the same time, educated others to implement my plan in other areas. The work for my project included cleaning out a water collection box, moving dirt and placing rocks around inlet and outlet pipes in the pond, water

“I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity, and I hope other students will challenge themselves to use their Westminster education to change the world...” sampling, volunteering at a local Earth Day event, and presenting my plan to local business owners, one of whom will be using it to spread water quality awareness in Guatemala later this year.

While I planned the entire project, I could not have completed it without the help of the Stormwater Department of North Augusta, where I worked with engineers and learned about the governmental side of environmental awareness. Also, the pond I updated was at Carter Orthodontics, where members of Dr. David Carter’s ’80 team helped me brainstorm logistics and the timeline.

Most importantly, I had help from the Westminster community.

Constant encouragement from faculty, Mr. Merwin’s contagious enthusiasm for the environment, the skills that I developed as a member of the Student Leadership Team, and the public speaking skills I developed from being a part of the Drama Department helped me throughout the entire process.

I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity, and I hope other students will challenge themselves to use their Westminster education to change the world, even if it’s just one pond at a time.

GREEN-ORR AWARD

S

ince 2005, one Lower and one Middle/Upper School teacher have been recognized for excellence in their field with the Green-Orr Award. The award helps celebrate the achievements of our faculty and aids in honoring the memory of Juanita and Charlie Green and Roberta and Harry Orr, parents of Peggy and Charlie Green. This year, the Green-Orr Award was presented to Destiny Pippin and Whitney Diehl.

Mrs. Pippin and Mrs. Diehl were selected for the award based on a vote from fellow faculty members.

Criteria for the award includes showing clear evidence and consistent support and advancement of Westminster’s mission; demonstrating significant impact on students through regular contact via teaching, coaching and/or mentoring; providing a positive Christian role model, and having completed at least five years on the faculty at Westminster.

DESTINY PIPPIN

Lower School teacher, Destiny Pippin, has a great passion and patience for her students, a willingness to forge ahead into new territories and new programs, and consistently encourages and prays with and for her co-teachers. With a willingness to make adjustments and changes based on the needs of the school, she exhibits flexibility with a positive and service-minded attitude.

Not only do each of her students have multiple hands-on opportunities to learn creatively, but they also are treated as precious clay to be molded into shape for the Lord’s glory. Each student in her care is loved. She nurtures and encourages them with words of affirmation and affection. She meets them where they are and treats each and every student with honor and dignity without losing patience… even with our precious 3-yearolds who might ask 100 times if she will tie their shoe!

Mrs. Pippin is a continuous learner of her students and subjects, is always seeking ways to improve her teaching, and is willing and eager to share what she has learned with others. A teaching pioneer, she developed an amazing curriculum and program last year for the new PK3 class and goes above and beyond what is asked of her.

Each day, she brings a positive and pleasant tone to every situation. She sees and believes the good about everyone— student, teacher, and parent. Mrs. Pippin models the love of Christ in her work with children and strives for a studentcentered learning environment so that her students will not only be equipped for higher learning, but will aspire to uncover the goodness of God’s love for them.

WHITNEY DIEHL

Given her breadth of knowledge and quiet confidence, few would guess the personal challenges Upper School teacher Whitney Diehl has conquered in her pursuit of God’s calling as an educator. She shuns the limelight and it is her love for students that enables her to press past the inherent dread she has of public speaking.

Those fortunate enough to be with her in a parent meeting or a casual conversation at lunch, however, would give witness to this truth: she is an articulate, humble, and committed lifelong learner. She is excellent and versatile in her craft, and for her, all learning, all loving begins at the feet of Jesus. Her soft-spoken nature belies her grit and stamina. She is unafraid to challenge her students spiritually as well as academically, not only with her voice, but more importantly, by example. While it is perhaps her fashion-sense that first draws students to her, it is her compassion that gives her long-standing influence in their lives.

She remembers what it was to be a high school student, with all its temptations, confusion, and questions.

Having been at Westminster for eight years, she has served in various roles, a few of which include teaching history and English in the Middle and Upper Schools, Department Chair, fearless champion of the Literary Magazine, and the ever-socoveted position of yearbook advisor.

Both Dr. and Mrs. Oliver labored tirelessly on behalf of Westminster, its mission, its students, and families. The late Mr. J. Bland Goodwin, Elder Emeritus of First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, graciously established this scholarship to honor their love for Westminster and their commitment and sacrifice in service to the school.

This scholarship is awarded to a student who positively serves and influences their community, sets an example for others, enjoys life, and is industrious. Virginia (Ginny) Jarrel Williamson was a student at Westminster from kindergarten through seventh grade.

During her academic career, she demonstrated particular talent and distinguished herself as an excellent student. Ginny’s death in December 1981 was a great loss to her family and friends. The Virginia Jarrel Williamson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1983 in memory of Ginny and her achievements. It is awarded each year on the basis of scholarship, achievement, and Christian citizenship.

The recipient of this scholarship is chosen through a competitive essay contest. The year-long theme in Mrs. Barfield’s kindergarten class is KINDergarten KINDness.

“We want to show God’s love and share His words with others in hopes that they will continue to pass the same love to someone else. We share acts of kindness each week around our campus, sometimes planned and other times random. Some of them actually come up out of discussions in the classroom or observations from the children. Those are the best ones,” said Mrs. Barfield.

At the last home football game of the 2017 season against longtime rival Augusta Prep, 10 of our youngest Wildcats shared an act of kindness with the opposing fans.

“The idea to share love with Augusta Prep fans came from a discussion during Bible time. It was also an opportunity to show God’s love to others outside of our school family,” said Mrs. Barfield. “The fans were very receptive to our love and, if even for a few minutes that night, the love of Jesus shone through these sweet children and covered any negative thoughts or feelings related to rivalry.”

UPPER SCHOOL SERVICE

More than 200 Upper School students and their advisory group leaders served the local community in various ways during Winterim last January, including yard work for those in need, care for animals, outdoor trash cleanup, and caring for the homeless and elderly. An additional project NEST Coat Drive they took on outside of Winterim was with NEST Ministries. The student leadership team partnered with NEST to collect coats for students at A. Brian Merry Elementary and Tutt Middle Schools.

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IN FRENCH

Students in French 4/5 presented the results of an intensive, project-based learning group assignment in March. Their final product was a 20-page feasibility report and proposal, a professional quality artist rendering and a Google slide presentation that they presented once in French to an audience of more than 600 people at the Maxwell Performing Arts theatre, a second time in English to an audience of six at the Augusta Public Transit authority and a third time to Mayor Hardie Davis Jr.

NO BOYS ALLOWED!

In March, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), in partnership with the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center at USC-Aiken and the Society of Women Engineers, hosted eighth-grade girls from schools throughout the greater Aiken-Augusta area for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Two Westminster students, Taylor Hawes and Sydney Roseman, now freshmen, were invited to attend. Approximately 50 girls from 25 middle schools in the CSRA interacted with Savannah River Site (SRS) professionals, who discussed their careers in engineering. According to Barbara Smoak, manager of WSRC Education Outreach Programs, the focus on female middle-school students is by design. “Our goal is to provide programs that will generate student interest in careers such as engineering that are critical to the success of SRS and local industries,” she said. “We have a particular interest in providing this information to female students because, traditionally, they are underrepresented in career fields that are science- and technology-oriented.”

The day included games to help girls discover where their interests lie and hands-on activities to show them how their natural problem-solving abilities form the basis for many engineering skills.

INAUGURAL LOWER SCHOOL DANCE FESTIVAL Students in kindergarten through third grade participated in dance festivals to demonstrate what they learned in music class about cultures from around the world.

Each festival consisted of folk dances from different countries and regions including Ghana, Israel, Russia, North America, and Hawaii.

MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL HURRICANE RELIEF

In September 2017, Middle and Upper School students organized two separate fundraisers to help support Lutheran South Academy in Houston recover and rebuild from Hurricane Harvey.

In addition to bake sales, for a $2 donation, students could dress in themed-attire during the school day.

In total, they raised over $1,000.

UPPER SCHOOL SPONSORS MEMORIAL BLOOD DRIVE

The Shepeard Community Blood Center’s mobile unit visited campus on Oct. 4 for the Michael J. Cave Memorial Blood Drive. Thank you to the 37 individuals, which included Upper School students and several faculty and staff members, who volunteered to donate. In all, they donated 28 pints of blood. The blood drive was held in honor of former student, Michael J. Cave, who passed away his freshman year and would have graduated with the Class of 2014.

AP ART SHOW

Seniors Emily Rogers, Lauren Rich, and Julia Pruitt showcased their artistic talent at Jessye Norman School of the Arts during the AP Art Show in April 2017.

Emily’s favorite piece from her portfolio is a larger-thanlife sculpture representing pure love. The outside panels – cool grays and very light pinks – represent the mystery of a newfound love. As you step inside the sculpture, the panel colors become darker reds, burgundies and deep pinks to represent the depth of passion as the relationship continues. “I wanted this piece to be something you can truly immerse yourself in and experience,” said Emily. “As you step inside the sculpture, you realize that the other person is getting to know the “real you” – including the ugly parts you try to hide (represented by a panel of blacks and harsh grays).”

At the center of Emily’s sculpture, hanging above all panels, is a white bundle representing the purity of love. As your eye travels back down, you see the complexity and mix of colors representing the struggle and joy of having someone walk through the fullness of love with you.

In addition to the large sculpture, Emily also created “light sculptures” after realizing she has a passion for making things with meaning behind them. Inspired by documentaries about the types of things that harm the environment, she created lamps and light fixtures out of found and recycled material.

“I took several trips dumpster diving with my mom to find things to use,” said Emily.

Lauren, who is currently studying in Brazil, wanted her portfolio to reflect the diversity of nations. Her favorite piece is a bust of a native African man. “I wanted to do something realistic instead of abstract,” explains Lauren, “and I worked hard to reflect the culture of Africa.” She also took a unique direction with her art by creating pieces that are functional as everyday items. Using dark pieces of wood, she created a table, table runner, chair and other items in the shape of various countries. Each item was finished with a glossy, elegant design.

Julia, inspired by abandoned buildings, used real photos of buildings and created scenes of life inside them. “There used to be life in these structures, and I wanted to pull that out,” said Julia. Using the photos, Julia created sketches with a torn-edged hole cut out in the center of the building. These cut-outs were then filled with scenes she imagined may have happened inside the building. “One of my favorites is this image of a shotgun home,” explains Julia. “I designed a wedding theme focusing on the joy a country girl may have had during the celebration of her wedding.” Other scenes included a birthday party in an old home and aged, stained glass windows behind the doors of a weary-looking church.

FINE ARTS YEAR IN REVIEW

T

here are many reasons to celebrate our fine arts students and their accomplishments during the 2016-17 school year. From their outstanding performances of The Little Mermaid and Annie to the off-campus opportunities they experienced at the region and state levels to the everyday achievements in the art studio, our students have much to be proud of. Some of the highlights include:

• Debate Team won State Championship second year in a row.

• Westminster won first place at the GISA Region and State Literary Competition for one-act play, Stepping Out. • The Literary Team was named the Class AAA Team Champions in the GISA State Literary Competition and Region runner-up.

• Emily Rogers was awarded the Silver Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program, which is the nation’s longestrunning, largest, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens. Students across the U.S. submitted nearly 320,000 original works during the 2016-17 school year in 29 different categories of art and writing. Emily joins Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, and Robert Redford, who have been recognized by this program • Middle School chorus took straight superiors at large group performance evaluation

We also had many students from each division, Lower, Middle, and Upper, enter their artwork in the Georgia-Carolina State Fair in the categories of Art and Photography. Many placed first, second or third in their respective age groups. A special honor went to Hanna Mayo, who won Best of Show in Photography.

In addition, several students placed first or second in the annual Literary Competition which is composed of 14 different individual and group events including essay writing, spelling, singing, piano, dramatic speeches, and extemporaneous speaking on current event topics.

RACHEL’S GARDEN SCULPTURE REVEAL On Sept. 26, art teacher Vivian Hornsby and students from the Class of 2021 unveiled Westminster’s first sculpture on campus, now permanently installed in Rachel’s Garden.

“Last year, our eighth grade students wanted to complete a project that would leave a legacy on campus,” said Hornsby, “so we designed columns to represent who we are as a community and as Westminster.”

The sculpture consists of three columns to represent the Trinity and each column showcases an individual theme: Westminster, Patriotism, and Fruits of the Spirit.

“Students created individual blocks that held meaning to them and later assembled them to build each column,” explains Hornsby.

Anyone can view the sculpture by visiting Rachel’s Garden in front of Knox Hall.

Thank you to the Class of 2021, Mrs. Hornsby, and everyone behind the scenes who assisted with this project. A special thanks goes out to FOFA, and especially the Nunziato family and the Williams family for their help with the installation.

LIVING THE “WILDCAT WAY”

T

he Westminster Athletics Department strives to create a culture of success, leadership, and character among our student-athletes. One way we do this is by committing to our mission statement, “The Wildcat Way,” which was developed during the 2013-14 school year by the varsity head coaches and me. We started the process by formulating a vision of what a true Westminster athlete should look like, both in the athletic arena and in the classroom, which then culminated in a mission statement that would encourage and challenge our student-athletes, as well as hold them accountable.

We want our student-athletes to be intentional about their character development and the way they approach their athletic experience at Westminster. While national statistics show that only a small number of students will pursue an athletic career at the college or professional level, the values they develop on the field today will mold them into great husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, and God-honoring citizens in the future. “The Wildcat Way” gives them an extra set of guidelines to follow and live by beyond our school’s mission statement that will help them “live extraordinary lives for Christ.”

There’s so much great content in “Habitudes” that supports our mission statement. Eventually, I narrowed it down to five anecdotes for each season, totaling 15, and included with each one a devotion/reflection that compares the story with a specific Bible verse. My plan is to produce one volume per year, so that our student-athletes will have new devotions in each of the four years they participate in athletics at Westminster.

According to Steve Ackley, head football coach, The Wildcat Way Playbook has been very well received by his team. He said, “the devotions are spot on for helping our student-athletes really understand the five principles in the mission statement and what it truly means to live ‘The Wildcat Way.’ More importantly, it has helped our team to understand how to lead like Jesus, by serving and loving each other, and playing for each other.”

This past summer, I took our athletics mission one step further and published The Wildcat Way Playbook, Vol. 1, a collection of devotions for Westminster coaches and student-athletes to use throughout each season. This first volume contains excerpts from the series of leadership books, “Habitudes,” by Dr. Tim Elmore, founder and president of Growing Leaders. In the series, habitude can be defined as “images that form leadership habits and attitudes.”

The excerpts, or “habitudes” I’ve included from the series contain anecdotes that help teach leadership truths, perfect for members of any athletic team. When reading through Elmore’s books, I particularly looked for content that supports the five principles of “The Wildcat Way,” which are: 1. We honor CHRIST FIRST. 2. We expect the BEST from our teammates because we demand the BEST from ourselves.

3. We reject complacency and OUTWORK our opponents as we STRIVE for SUCCESS. 4. We compete with UNCOMPROMISING CHARACTER and INTEGRITY at all times.

Westminster student-athletes are leaders and should always ask the question: How do I influence others? Our hope is that the devotions in The Wilcat Way Playbook will not only help them answer that question, but also serve as a reminder to live “The Wildcat Way” and lead like Christ.

My prayer is that we all, and not just our student-athletes, seek to honor Christ first and live “The Wildcat Way.”

BOOSTER CLUB THANKS

BY ANDREW BRYAN, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

O

n behalf of the athletics program and our studentathletes, I would like to say thank you to the hardworking parents of the Booster Club. Attend any home game and you will see them in action, both on and off the field.

There are many parents who help in different ways throughout each season, as we certainly can’t run home athletic events without them, but the Booster Club is a special group that goes above and beyond. Every year they raise close to $40,000 through memberships, concessions, Spirit Wear, and occasional special events, all of which goes directly back into helping our studentathletes have the very best experience they can at Westminster.

Westminster’s Booster Club has been around for many years, but with the restructuring of the organization eight years ago, we’ve been able to transform the campus with many new athletic facility upgrades.

Some of the upgrades include the addition of baseball batting cages, visitor’s bleachers in the stadium, the Cat Shack, and tripling the size of the weight room. The most recent capital improvements include the renovation of the locker room with Prepping before a game in the new Middle the addition of a School locker room. restroom, a second locker room, and

an athletic training room for our trainers to better serve our athletes. Future plans include renovating the old cafeteria with additional locker room facilities, a permanent concession area, and a lobby for the gym that will include trophy cases and other features that highlight our athletes.

In addition to their financial support, they are also involved in fostering school spirit, facilitating communication, and promoting the athletic programs at Westminster. The atmosphere created by the student body and parents at the first home football game of the fall 2017 season was one our players and the coaches will never forget.

We had great success this past year at, winning multiple region and state championships with most of the credit going to our student-athletes and their commitment and hard work. We certainly could not do it without the support of our boosters as well.

“As the president of the Booster Club, I am honored to work alongside a very talented team of parents who love the Lord, our student-athletes and Westminster. We hope that our behindthe-scenes work will help bring a bright future for all of our sports programs. Thank you to all the volunteers who serve in helping our programs thrive,” said Todd Fuller.

2016-17 YEAR IN REVIEW “Whether it was in the classroom, competition or the community, Westminster studentathletes and coaches made us proud to to be Wildcats,” said Athletic Director Andrew Bryan.

Here is a sampling of some of our accomplishments: Two of our teams captured a state championship title: • Varsity girls tennis defended their state title for a second year in a row being named State Champions.

• Varsity boys soccer captured their fourth state title in a row, making school history.

One of the biggest influences on our athletics program and one of the strongest reasons for team success is having an excellent coaching staff. Westminster is blessed to have many excellent coaches, among them Mike Freace (boys soccer) and Leisa Tebbs (girls tennis), who were both named Coach of the Year at the state level by Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) after winning state championships. Congratulations to these outstanding coaches!

ATHLETES OF THE YEAR This award is based on a point system that includes participation, performing at a high level, and being recognized throughout the GISA regions and the state as one of the top athletes in a sport.

TYRA KIMBLER

2016-17 FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Tyra participated in several sports throughout her time at Westminster. She was a four-year member of the Varsity Soccer team and was named an All-Region and All-State selection during her senior year. In addition, during her senior year she participated in three sports: cross country, soccer, and track. In track she received recognition for All-Region and All-State for her first place finish in the 400 meter. She was also a member of the 2014 State Champion Girls Cross Country team. In addition to being named Female Athlete of the Year at Westminster, she also was named the Morris C. Johnson Academic Athlete Award winner for the state of Georgia. Each year, only 10 student athletes are selected for this award and must have at least a 3.75 GPA, be a multi-sport participant, and be a multiple All-Region and All-State winner.

JELANI WATSON-GAYLE

2016-17 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR Jelani proved that he definitely knows his way around both a soccer field and a basketball court. In the two years he was a student at Westminster, he played on both the Varsity Basketball team and the Varsity Soccer team. In basketball, he was named All-Area, All-CSRA, WJBF Scholar Athlete of the Week, and The Augusta Chronicle Player of the Year. In addition, Jelani is a two-time GISA AAA All-Region and All-State selection. He also helped lead the team to a Region championship and State Final Four appearance.

While playing soccer, Jelani helped lead the team to two Region Championships and two State Championships. He was also named GISA All-Region and All-State. Jelani is currently a freshman at Benedict College on a full athletic scholarship to play basketball. Congratulations, Jelani!

INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Joshua Fulcher ’17 repeated his run as the State Swim Champion in the 500 freestyle and also added two new individual state championships, the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

• Tyra Kimbler was the GISA AAA State Champion in the 400 meter race, beating her closest competitor by almost three seconds.

• Cameron Frank and Mary Garrett McLeod won the State Champion title in doubles tennis.

• Class of 2017 graduates who are playing sports for their colleges include Jelani Watson-Gayle (basketball at Benedict College), Noah Lee (soccer at Covenant College), Joshua Fulcher (swimming at University of Georgia), and Jannie Nel (soccer at Georgia Southern).

• We have three students from the Class of 2018 who will or have already committed to playing in college, including Kylie Duckworth, who will play tennis at the University of Tennessee, Larkin Ison, who will play football at Princeton, and Abigayle Kelley, who will cheer for Belmont Abbey College.

ALUMNI DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

STEPHEN MERWIN ‘94

T

he Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes and honors alumni who have represented Westminster’s mission and core values in their work, in their lives and in their communities. As an embodiment of Westminster’s mission to raise up graduates who live extraordinary lives for Christ at home and abroad, Stephen Merwin ’94, was selected as the recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Alumni award.

After graduating from Westminster, Stephen went on to Augusta University (AU) and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. Shortly thereafter, he married his wife Kellie, whom he met during a year-long service trip as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor at a private boarding school in western China.

After graduating from AU, he served for three years as a junior high youth director in Birmingham. Then in 2003, Stephen and Kellie returned to China, studied Mandarin for two years, and continued in their role as ESL instructors at universities in China.

Fourteen years and four children later, Stephen also serves as city director for his organization, leading his teammates in developing programs that utilize education to bless the city. He has taught thousands of hours of oral English, writing, and culture. He challenges students to higher levels of English fluency, and to higher levels of thinking, asking them to reflect on the meaning of their existence and encouraging them to live beyond themselves.

He’s sponsored more than 60 medical students to the U.S. for three-week professional exchanges. Several students have gone on to study abroad and one spent this past summer in Jordan teaching English to Syrian refugees.

“I believe receiving an award like this is much like writing an essay: to not give credit where credit is due is a form of plagiarism,” Stephen said. “So if I get this wrong, I may be facing expulsion. Unfortunately, even a whole day wouldn’t be enough time to properly recognize the individuals and institutions that deserve it. But hopefully the few brush strokes I give in this brief time will sufficiently paint a picture that justifies this claim: I can’t receive any of the credit for the honor given to me today.”

Stephen began by thanking his family. “The first reason begins with my parents. By simply modeling a good marriage, my parents have given and are giving me an inheritance far greater than earthly riches, not to mention the uncountable hours of their faithful discipleship in the home.

“This award must go in equal parts to Kellie, my wife, with whom I am one in mind, body, and soul, who has only made me wiser, stronger, and more virtuous. She is God’s greatest gift to me, second only to the gift of Christ, that great Lover of our souls. Had I been joined with another, the fruit of my life would be half the volume and a tenth of the quality,” he said.

So whatever fruit my life has and will produce, I can’t claim it...God has used so many people, in so many ways to make one thing clear: all honor and glory must ultimately be laid at His feet.

“Then there is First Presbyterian Church, this great, faithful church which God used to water my soul with His living and active Word. I can only guess, but the version of me without the passionate teaching of Todd Erickson, the faithful guidance of Gus Diamondidis, and mind-stretching preaching of John Oliver would have had a more malleable faith that sought out an earthly life.

“Finally, there is the school that is giving me this award: Westminster. There are two types of students: those that think of themselves too much or too little. I was the latter, and I thank you for seeing what I didn’t see. Mrs. Story saw a physicist; Mr. Johnson, a leader; Mrs. Dillard, a writer; Mrs. Heppert, an artist; Mr. Gossage, a philosopher. Together the teachers of Westminster were firm stakes in the ground on which I could lean until I was strong enough to grow in my own direction.

“So whatever fruit my life has and will produce, I can’t claim it.

Only my faults and failures are my own, and those Christ has graciously and mercifully taken on Himself. God has used so many people, in so many ways to make one thing clear: all honor and glory must ultimately be laid at His feet.”

Thank you, Stephen, for living an extraordinary life for Christ.

Steve Whitcomb finished the 2017 Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race in Leadville, Colorado, on Aug. 12, 2017.

The race is considered to be the “race of all races” in the mountain bike world. He was thrilled by the opportunity to participate.

CLASS OF 1998 Ashley Wilson was recently named as a “Rising Star” in Atlanta Magazine’s “2017 Super Lawyers Edition,” a distinction given to less than 2.5 percent of all attorneys in Georgia. In April, Ashley was elected to the Atlanta Bar Association’s board of directors. She is engaged to marry fellow attorney Marion Avery “Marc” Clark II later this year.

CLASS OF 1999 While working with Dr. Kathy Clark of Florida State University, Amanda (Saxon) Dean established and runs the Tallahassee Math Circle, which is funded by a grant from an anonymous donor through FSU’s College of Education.

Amanda, a homeschooling mom, is married to Derek; they have three children.

He is a managing member and attorney at Burroughs Elijah LLC. a law firm that focuses on estate planning, elder law, and business law.

Tyler Blackburn Vines married Jacquelyn Renée Couture on May 13 at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston. Classmates Ross McDaniel and Bobby Williams were groomsmen. Tyler graduated the following week from the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is currently in residency in neurology at Augusta University Medical Center. The Vines reside in North Augusta.

CLASS OF 2009 Mackenzie (Burgess) Dalton and her husband Zach live in Jinja, Uganda, and work as house parents for The Amazima School, a classical Christ-centered secondary boarding school that equips students with tools to enable them to live fully to the glory of God. Mackenzie and Zach are in charge of mentoring a house of 24 Ugandan girls, ages 13 to 18, all in their first year of secondary school.

Amazima Ministries was founded by Katie Davis Majors, author of the New York Times bestseller, “Kisses From Katie.” The school opened at the beginning of 2017 and is the only one of its kind in all of East Africa. The Lord is doing a mighty work through these students as they grow into servant leaders resembling Jesus.

Mackenzie and Zach’s prayer is that these students would become a generation of young men and women who reflect the Father as they help transform the country of Uganda for the glory of the Lord!

CLASS OF 2011 Maggie Snyder and Nick Newsome were married Sept. 2, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church of Augusta.

CLASS OF 2012 Haleigh Swierski and Charles Zachary Mahaffey (Zach) were married May 13, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church of Augusta. Haleigh received a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of South Carolina and currently works for a private pediatric clinic, Right Steps, LLC. Haleigh wrote, “I truly owe my success to Westminster.

The ability to graduate undergrad in three years made it possible for me to have earned this degree and have this great job at only the age of 23. I truly am thankful for all Westminster did to prepare me.”

Kelly McGahee graduated from Georgia Southern University in 2016 with a B.S. in public relations and a minor in French.

In June 2017 Kelly began working as a Staff Associate for McNeely Pigott & Fox, an awardwinning, full-service public relations firm based in Nashville. They provide total communications and marketing services for a diversified client mix at the local, regional, and national levels and have grown to become one of the largest independent public relations firms in the Southeast.

Sabrina Rush left Capitol Hill and is now working in the Office of the President & CEO at the American Red Cross in Washington, DC. She started as a Red Cross volunteer with the Augusta Chapter nine years ago when she was a freshman at Westminster.

Sabrina is responsible for maintaining the president’s calendar by coordinating meetings and travel and assisting with the execution of the president’s daily schedule.

Roy Smith graduated from Clemson University with a major in Biochemistry and a minor in Business Administration.

He is currently in his first year of medical school at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. His white coat ceremony was on Aug. 19. He is enjoying his time at MUSC despite the rigorous curriculum; he shared that his time at Westminster and Clemson thoroughly prepared him for the journey ahead.

Although he is open-minded about all subspecialties in the future, he is drawn towards surgery and pediatric orthopedic surgery. He has an excellent support group at home in Augusta that he is thankful for, and feels incredibly blessed to have them. He is looking forward to where God leads him in his path of becoming a physician.

CLASS OF 2013 David C. Newton graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia Honors Program and was recently featured as one of UGA’s “Amazing Students.” He is one of 12 Harrison Scholars to receive a scholarship to attend the Medical College of Georgia - Augusta University (MCG). The scholarship is funded by a historic gift from the late Dr. J. Harold Harrison, a proud MCG alumnus and former chairman of the MCG Foundation.

Caroline Powell married Stetson Turner on Feb. 18, 2017, at St. Paul’s Church in Augusta.

Lauren Powell Hawkins ’09 was matron of honor, and classmate Ali Zimmerman served as a bridesmaid. Caroline graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Exercise Science and a minor in Spanish. Stetson is a mechanical engineer at the Savannah River Site, and Caroline is in her first year of the Physician’s Assistant program at Augusta University. The Turners live in North Augusta.

He traveled with the team to both the semifinal game in the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix and the National Championship game in Tampa at the end The Barinowski Family at Clemson of the 2016 season.

Sisters Haley ’12 and Brantley ’16 along with parents (Rhonda and Glenn) were able to celebrate the national championship win with him!

Michael McCraith became Wheaton’s first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Pitcher of the Year after he led the conference with a 0.64 ERA and was 6-0 in six CCIW appearances in the 2017 season.

He had 46 strikeouts in 42.0 innings pitched in CCIW games. He also received academic recognition from the CCIW for his work in the classroom. He’s currently a junior double majoring in Political Science and Communications.

This past summer I was selected to represent Baylor University at the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP). Although I did not fully understand the program at first, the prospect of going to a new place, serving a cause I believed in, and gaining more experience enticed me to participate. Founded at Washington and Lee University 20 years ago, SHECP gives college students tools to help diminish poverty by informing them about causes and remedies and engaging them in professional, civic, and political experiences.

In June, I was one of 120 students from 23 consortium schools who were placed in at-risk communities across the country. Although we were all considered interns, the program is more than just an internship. This experience also includes living on a poverty stipend and using public transportation to engage in the community.

When I was placed at Family Scholar House (FSH), a nonprofit organization in Louisville, Kentucky, I knew that this would be different than anything I had experienced before.

FSH is committed to ending the cycle of poverty and transforming their community by empowering families and youth to succeed in education and achieve lifelong self-sufficiency. They also partner with Section 8 to help families with affordable housing, which is in high demand but short supply in the Louisville area. Equipping single parents and youth who are aging out of the foster care system with academic advisors, family advocates, and financial literacy workshops, participants have the support and resources to earn a college degree and create a better future for themselves and their children.

An interaction on my first day best encapsulates this mission. A participant invited me to her apartment, and as she showed me around, what was most striking was what she called her “achievement wall.” Framed diplomas, scholarships from her school, and community awards covered the wall along with her two kids’ preschool graduation certificates, showing the generational impact of education. She shared that when she was in middle school, her family was evicted, and she watched as all her belongings were thrown into a dumpster.

She has no mementos or personal belongings to remember that time of her life, but now this wall preserves her hard work and dedication as she pursues a bachelor’s degree.

My greatest takeaway from my summer is that education is a privilege.

It can be the mechanism to overcome the cycle of poverty and provide an escape from broken systems of unstable social structures, ineffective public transportation, and domestic violence. I have always had access to education, which has opened doors to me. When I think of the strength it takes for FSH’s participants to overcome obstacles due to poverty while balancing school, raising children, and often working full-time, it puts a new perspective on my own educational experience and the environment in which I was raised.

SPOTLIGHT ON DR. AARON ADAMS ‘05

F

ollowing his pediatric residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, and then a year’s deployment to Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Aaron Adams ’05 recently began work as staff pediatrician at Walter Reed Medical center in Washington, DC. By coincidence, he works with fellow Westminster classmate Dr. Julie Anne Baunchalk, who recently finished her three-year pediatric residency at Walter Reed.

During his time in Korea, Dr. Adams and his practice partners began a program for screening military family members for Adverse Childhood Events or ACEs. The idea for this new program stems from research led by V.J. Felitti, who studied the relationship of childhood abuse and household dysfunction with many of the leading causes of illness in more than 17,000 adults.

The study showed what many already intuitively suspected: the more ACEs a child experienced, the more likely they were to develop mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and even suicide. However, the astounding part of the study was a definitive correlation between ACEs and physical disease including cancer, heart disease, and COPD. In fact, someone with six or more ACEs had an average 20-year decrease in life expectancy. ACEs were also found to be much more prevalent in the population than suspected, with 66 percent of the population having at least one and 13 percent of the population have four or more. Follow-up studies have consistently reproduced Felitti’s findings.

Dr. Adams describes the relationship between ACEs and increased morbidity and mortality in adulthood being linked to a phenomenon called “toxic stress.” Not all stress is pathologic.

When studying for a test or running from a bear, stress is useful.

But, when that “bear” is an abusive parent, the uncertainty of food, or in some cases substance abuse in the home, it sets up a state of constant stress which is what Dr. Adams and his colleagues mean when they describe “toxic stress.” Children with toxic stress have a disrupted hormone axis, abnormal neural development, and even demonstrate alterations to their very genome. These disruptions are the causal link between a patient’s ACE score and poor health outcomes as an adult. Fortunately, early intervention with behavioral health, social services, and parental education has been shown to mitigate long-term effects and improve outcomes for children with high ACEs.

Given the prevalence and consequences of patients with increased ACEs, Dr. Adams and his colleagues were surprised to learn that only 3 percent of pediatric practices in the U.S. screen their patients for ACEs. Upon implementation of a screening program, Dr. Adams’ practice was able to identify numerous at-risk children and connect their families with needed social and behavioral health support. Now that Dr. Adams is at Walter Reed, the military’s flagship hospital, he is hoping to expand the screening program to his new clinic and eventually to all pediatric practices throughout the Department of Defense.

Dr. Adams is no stranger to the detrimental effects of stress in childhood. Though he never experienced any abuse or neglect in childhood, when he was 5, his neighbor’s house was hit by lightning and caught on fire. Afterward he developed astraphobia, an extreme fear of thunderstorms. He credits the nurturing environment at Westminster and his third grade teacher, Julia Joiner, with helping him to overcome his fear. When storms occurred during school, Mrs. Joiner paid special attention to him, comforted him, and provided a safe environment where he could work through his fear. She taught him how to be courageous even when he didn’t want to be. He especially remembers the extra time she spent with him, helping him to catch up on schoolwork missed during a storm and preventing his classmates from teasing him. It is exactly this type of nurturing environment that has been shown to protect against the effects of toxic stress.

Dr. Adams credits much of his success as a physician, and particularly his ability and confidence to pursue this new program to his time at Westminster. “Westminster was crucial in my preparation for college, and my academic experience conditioned me to do the hard work,” he said. He chose to major in chemistry as an undergraduate because of his chemistry teacher, Susan Smith, and the way she “opened my eyes to science and sparked my love for chemistry.” She also prepared him for when science and his faith seem contradictory. In those moments he would often recall her words: “God is the author of science and the Bible. We know God doesn’t contradict himself.

The problem is we are fallible humans trying to make sense of the word and works of an infinite God.” Dr. Adams also credits another teacher, Ruth Ann Fliermans, who after having taught his two older brothers before him, helped him to exceed his own expectations and learn that he was capable of much more than just being the family and class clown. “Many of my achievements and current work would not be possible if it weren’t for the lifechanging work of the teachers and my time at Westminster,” Dr. Adams said.

CELEBRATING NEW POSSIBILITIES WITH THE OPENING OF KNOX HALL “There’s no question... It’s a great day to be a Westminster Wildcat!”

These are some of the words shared by Head of School Brian Case at the ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Knox Hall on Aug. 9, 2017, with students, faculty, administrators, board members, and donors along with the Metro Augusta Chamber of Commerce in attendance.

Also speaking at the event, in addition to Mr. Case was Rev. George Robertson, former senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Augusta.

Located on the Middle and Upper School campus, Knox Hall truly modernizes the campus for 21st century learning. The first floor of this 20,000-square-foot building includes a cafeteria/ commons area that seats more than 300 people for lunch and more than 400 people for chapel or assemblies. A modern kitchen facilitates daily lunches and other community events. The second floor adds much needed instructional space with four additional classrooms and a media center.

This welcoming space provides individual study areas, breakout rooms for group studies, and a conference room.

This $5.2 million project was funded by more than 190 donors whose generous support made this building a reality. Cam Scott of Cheatham, Fletcher, Scott Architects designed the building and Todd Brown of RD Brown Contractors served as the general contractor to lead the construction project, which was completed in summer 2017.

“Knox Hall is a beautiful structure that will enhance not only the footprint of our campus, but the education and preparation of Westminster students for generations to come,” said Mr. Case.

“The flexible space that Knox Hall provides has already allowed us to make great strides in regards to technology integration and innovation,” said Kendra Sue Finch ’94, educational technology innovation coordinator. “The improved classrooms equipped with interactive white boards have allowed teachers to engage students with technology. Teachers are using their white boards to annotate their presentations, making them more interactive. Many teachers are beginning to record lessons with their laptops and white boards as a means for flipping their classrooms,” Mrs. Finch said.

“With Augusta becoming the center of cyber technology, we are poised to move with and lead in the educational realm to equip our students with the tools they need.”

“The new modern kitchen has been a much-needed improvement. The space is four times more efficient than the old kitchen,” said Head Chef Keith Boring. “Food is cooked much faster, and we have more room, allowing us to offer a greater variety of options. The recent storm proved another aspect of cost savings. Last year when power was lost for eight hours, several thousand dollars of food was lost. During a recent storm, the new equipment held food at the
