WSA VISIONS

ªI consider the WSA initiative to be highly important because it presents and supports the highest quality in e-Content production in the world and it fits with the priority focus of Austria on the creative use of ICTs for development and the future information society". Alfred Gusenbauer

Narrowing the Content Gap — Bridging the Digital Divide

Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria

"Our association with the WSA has served our corporate philosophy of contributing to the society we serve. Additionally the international presence and exposure we received over the past two years has exceeded our expectations. As a partner of the WSA, we can only encourage other global corporations to join in and support the cause" Dr. Saad Al Barrak CEO, Zain Group

"ISOC is proud to cooperate with and be a sponsor of the WSA. The aim of this initiative aligns well with ISOC’s mission of promoting the use of the Internet for the benefit of people everywhere. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to work with all the people who make the WSA possible. It is truly worthwhile."

"Closing the digital divide is vital for Africa’s efforts to promote industrial competitiveness for job creation and poverty alleviation. And Information and communication technologies are a key tool. They can help stimulate a thriving knowledge-based economy that creates wealth and bring down poverty level. That is why UNIDO joined hands with the WSA."

Lynn St. Amour President & CEO, Internet Society (ISOC)

"UNESCO has been supporting the World Summit Award since its launch in 2003. It especially values the efforts of the WSA in promoting the digitalization of cultural documentary heritage and in fostering local content". Koichiro Matsuura Kandeh Yumkella Director-General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

Director-General,United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

05

THE IDEA The World Summit Award is today the world’s leading initiative for selecting and promoting the best products in creative e-Content and innovative interactive applications. It started in 2003, initiated by Austria in the framework of the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Presently, 168 countries are actively participating in the process.

"The overall goal of WSA is to show and demonstrate the richness and diversity of e-contents. ICTs are creatively used around the world, but only very few know about it. WSA bridges the content gap by finding out the best and putting them on stage. It also narrows the digital divide in terms of access to quality information. The WSA creates global recognition and success for the best. It provides an equal chance for all producers irrespective of their country of origin, size of investment, amount of marketing money or cultural or linguistic background. This catalogue of the WSA 07 Winners testifies to that!" Peter A. Bruck WSA Chairman, Austria

06

GLOBAL CONTEST The backbone of the WSA initiative is the bi-annual global contest on e-Content and Creativity. It is held in eight categories, covering the entire life cycle. There are 8 nominations for the Global Contest from each participating country. NATIONAL CONTESTS As of today over 50 countries run national contests, based on WSA rules and procedures. Other countries do national pre-selections, based on a decision by a committee of experts. Winners of national contests are automatically nominated for the WSA global contest.

Participation preserves culture. The Participatory 3D Geographic Information System from Fiji is a collaborative resource used for the planning and preservation of intangible cultural heritage on the island. Participatory learning and action methods are combined with Geographic Information Technologies and Systems to compose and record peoples’ spatial knowledge in the forms of virtual or physical, 2 or 3 dimensional maps. These maps are used as interactive means for discussion, information exchange and analyses as well as for as support in advocacy, decision making and action taking in the communities. Mapping cultural assets help to protect them and to develop resource management and preservation plans for those communities in Fiji.

Culture needs remembrance. "The End of Silence" is a unique multimedia documentary of the Auschwitz Trials in Frankfurt 1963-1965 which ended eighteen years of silence on the crimes in the concentration camps. The web site gives a comprehensive overview of a behaviour common in Germany after the war when people wanted to forget the holocaust. It shows how a man picks up the topic and makes it an issue. The use of exceptional interactive video content without a melancholic overtone has an impact on young and old. The project guides the audience through four chapters revealing the concentration camp atrocities, the events during the trials, witness accounts and present-day commemoration activities. Original film footage and exclusive artwork from camp survivors bring history to life.

History lives. The City of David encapsulates the Biblical City of Jerusalem where King David himself roamed over 3,000 years ago. This outstanding website brings remote visitors face to face with the protagonists and locations of the living Bible. Its fabulous visuals and the rich descriptions of the site in English, Spanish, Hebrew, French and Russian bring to life the only place on earth where the only guidebook actually needed is the Bible itself. The City of David is produced by a non-political and nonreligious organization located in the heart of the Old City in Jerusalem. Guided tours, a 3D movie and a panoramic outlook of the town invite you to visit the City of David. See you soon!

Culture can be preserved. The Te Puia galleries in Rotorua, New Zealand are two large, predominantly multimedia galleries that introduce visitors to the landscape of Whakarewarewa geothermal valley and Te Arawa culture. They represent the latest convergence of digital and tactile interaction design for indigenous cultural tourism. These galleries engage visitors with Maori culture. They provide an immersive space with 3D game technology and large, tactile, multimedia interactivities. The Te Puia galleries are a cross media application that preserves the history of the valley in a form that is engaging and accessible. They are designed to be a tool for guides rather than an independent experience, as the local Maori guiding economy is a crucial lifeblood for the region.

Description of the Product

Description of the Product

Educational divides run through many societies. The Online application for the Higher Education Admission Center in Oman was designed to help thousands of students to apply for college and universities no matter where they live in the country. The system has unified all admission procedures for higher education into one application. This portal includes all needed information, checks the requirements and allows online applications for all matters including financial support without travelling long distances or insider know-how. The system allocates places to students according to their exam results and their program preferences, and does so with great accuracy, equality and transparency.

Civic responsibility can be based on e-Content. The Infoblago web-site links charity organizations in Russia to those willing to help or those in need of help. It fills an information gap and is meant to counteract an "information blockade" of the social and charity themes and subjects in the mainstream mass media. It provides daily updated information on events, legislation and other topics relevant to charity in Russia. The web site also contains an active forum and allows to perform on-line searches to find both organisations which provide help in a specific field and or persons who are looking for helping hands themselves. Infoblago.ru sets a good example of e-Inclusion through multimedia.

Multimedia for sustainability. Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a site on the world wide web and in Uganda where solar powered, high speed wireless Internet access produces income for gorilla monitoring as well as a human health project. The Telecentre serves important educational purposes and provides health and environmental awareness through multimedia. People trained in the use of ICT at the Telecentre include 40% women. The project encourages ecotourism and catalyzes economic activities and spin-offs. It provides employment opportunities to the community and is a good example of effective e-Inclusion built on an innovative ICT and e-Content initiative.
