NURTURING STUDENTS TO BE COLLEGE AND/OR CAREER READY

There is a relatively high level of satisfaction with the education the children of Cuney Homes residents are receiving. Of those with schoolaged children 65% hope that their children will pursure higher education. Residents would like to see additional after school programming to assist their children in school. Parents are also interested in summer programs, individual tutoring, college guidance, and an onsite homework club.

Other programs that would interest children include arts and crafts, college preparation, computer programming, and dance.

The majority of Cuney Homes high school students are aiming to attend college. In a neighborhood deep-rooted in civic engagement, children will continue writing the narrative of the Third Ward and plant the seeds of what they envision for the future.

Creating A Safe Community

Public safety appears is the most pressing issue for the Third WardCuney Homes community. It affects the sense of security, impacting the ability to feel comfortable exercising or using public spaces throughout the neighborhood or allowing children to play outside.

On the positive site, residents expressed a strong desire to be involved in making their neighborhood safer so families, children, young adults, and seniors can experience the parks and public spaces together.

In terms of enhancing the neighborhood’s safety, residents are interested in many solutions from security cameras, less illegal dumping, better lighting, and mental health and trauma support services.

Making The Neighborhood Safer

A safer neighborhood could further enhance the sense of community. A safer neighborhood would enable more residents to share experiences with their neighbors, children to thrive in a safe environment, and visitors to explore the Third Ward’s rich history and culture.

Towards A Healthier Neighborhood

Improving the health of residents begins with preventative care, yet only 8% of survey respondents have an annual check-up and only 24% have one dental cleaning. The rate of residents with health insurance varies from 67% for other household members to 88% for children. This is due largely to cost. But another barrier to healthcare is the lack of health facilities in the Choice neighborhood. The top facility used by residents is the Texas Medical Center, situated outside of the neighborhood. Locating more services in the neighborhood and providing a shuttle to major medical centers are among the top ways residents feel their health could be improved.
