A British music scene robbed of the riches brought by the Windrush generation is utterly unthinkable. The ska, rocksteady, reggae and calypso brought by those pioneers inspired generations of Britons and the music that resulted remains both the cultural lifeblood of this nation and one of its biggest exports. This excellent and timely collection is both a celebration of the Windrush generation and a commemoration of the struggles they faced. It shows that racist attempts to curtail the movement and mixing of people impoverish us all, and underlines that great things happen when we get-together.
