The Writers’ Room After-school Tutoring Chapbook Volume 1, Number 3 Spring 2012

The KidSafe Writers’ Room works with inner-city kids in East Vancouver to build lifelong literacy skills through creative writing projects (like this chapbook), tutoring and mentorships. Writers’ Room volunteer tutors provide oneon-one support so that each child receives the attention that he or she deserves.

All of our programs are free for the children and families we serve.

The Writers’ Room is a project of the KidSafe Project Society, and the Writers’ Room after-school tutoring program runs at Queen Alexandra Elementary in partnership with the Vancouver School Board’s Van Tech Community Schools Team and the York House School.

Once upon a time there was a prince and a queen. A tomato came and took everyone to the giant’s home. The giant came and watched how they were. The prince and the queen ran when the giant stomped his feet. The tomato came and took everyone home. The giant only wanted to talk.

The Girl with Scissors

Once upon a time there was a girl named Chelsea. She was eight years old. She never knew about scissors. She was the only person who doesn’t know about scissors. Even a little girl that’s three years old knows about scissors. But once a stranger told her about scissors, she asked where the scissor shop was. She was very brave to ask that. Once she got there, she wanted to buy a scissor. So she bought one. After she bought a scissor, she became a scissor—she became the scissor monster! No one told her if you buy scissors you will turn into the scissor monster. She was the scissor monster forever until she died.

The Bully Stopper

One exciting day I was going to Famous High School where the best sports players are. When I arrived I was looking for my class. I was still looking and it took five hours. Then three hours later school was over. I went outside. I saw people playing football—my favourite sport!

I went and asked, “Can I play?”

And Dan said, “Get lost, loser!”

I ran. And a high school student said, “Sup!” It was my best friend, Sebastian. I said, “Seb? I thought you 6

went to Van Tech?”

Seb said, “What’s going on?”

And Eric said, “Why are you so damaged?”

Seb said, “That stupid Dan bullies me and everyone he sees!”

I said, “I kinda hate him too! But it’s nice to get another friend and stop him.”

“Hey,” said Seb, “why don’t we get Dan to be our friend?”

“Sure but it’ll be hard.”

Then the two heroes went back bravely to the bully.

Dan said, “What do you want? You wanna get beat up?”

“No thanks. It’s not nice to do that.”

Dan said, “You dare say that to me, the best football player? Attack them!”

“Stop bullying,” said Seb, standing strong and tall. They stopped and Dan realized that they wanted to be friends, and from that day, he stopped bullying some people.

It was Dan’s game today. The score was five to five. Stopping bullying affected his game, but he always wanted it challenging. It was fun and when the game was over, he still won, and he felt happier than ever. He thought Eric and Seb would be good friends. They made him feel better. Then he asked, “Eric and Seb, you wanna be friends?”

“Sure,” they said.

Everyone heard him. They asked, “Can I be your friend?” and he felt way better.

Highway or the Woods?

By Ashley, grade 5

There was a boy. His name was Bob. His mom told him to go to the store to get milk. His mom told him to go to the woods because the highway was too long. So he went to the woods. Then he got to the store and the store man asked, “Highway or the woods?”

And Bob said, “The woods.”

The store man said, “Go highway ’cause there’s a girl in the woods named Clikclikslied.”

The boy didn’t go to the highway because he needed to get home, so he took the woods, and he heard something behind him. It sounded like Clikclikslied. He walked faster. The sound got faster. And he got tired. So Clikclikslied got him and no one saw Bob again.

His mom went outside and yelled out, “Bob, I need my milk!” But the milk never came.

The Story of a Kid Named Zach and Fat Chicken the Gangster

Written by Williams, Huynh, Andrew and Brayden, grade 4; Jason, Jasmine and Shirley, grade 3; and Donna, grade 5.

Special chapbook illustrated by Williams; Brayden; Jason; Mico, grade 4; and their tutor, Cole.

Once upon a time there was a kid named Zach.

He met a fat chicken that strangled a flower.

The fat chicken was actually a gangster named Fat Chicken. Fat Chicken weighed one hundred pounds and he was ten foot by ten foot. He would sometimes eat kids’ earwax and take their wallets. So he sat on Zach and laid an egg that turned into billions of minions.

All this happened on a warehouse filled with junk on a chicken world.

The warehouse was controlled by gangster chickens. Fat Chicken the gangster was training to take over the world.

The SWAT team, who were trying to stop him, were very old possums who had no muscles and were blind and drooled when they talked. They went to sleep forever and their children took over the SWAT team.

One day, Zach was captured by the very many chickens on the chicken world. They put Zach in a chicken costume and trained Zach to act as one of their gangster friends.

Later, the possums came to rescue Zach, but Zach refused to escape because he was brainwashed/hypnotized. So the young possums knew what to do. They got a needle and did surgery on his brain. It was dangerous because the possums were not doctors.

So the possums went to sleep and the gangsters went hang gliding. They forgot to put on the straps so they fell down into the sea. They got swallowed by a whale and the whale blew them out the blowhole.

Zach was at the base trying to undo the stitches in his head, but his brain fell out, and he put it back in, held it there, and stitched himself back up.

When he put the brain back in, it was the wrong brain, so he was not hypnotized anymore. But it was Sarah’s brain. He said, “Fish sticks.” And, “I feel like I got hit by a truck.”

Sarah was Sarah from KidSafe.

So Zach went looking for Fat Chicken, so he could get his old unhypnotized/unbrainwashed brain back.

Fat Chicken was hiding in a mushroom full of yoghurt and some pudding. Fat Chicken was eating Zach’s brain. Fat Chicken said, “What are you doing here?”

And then a zombie walked in with a giant banana and said, “Does anyone want a giant banana?”

Then the zombie screamed and fell down, and Fat Chicken read a book called What’s Happening to Me and learned lots of information about the human body.

Zach got a new brain from the zombie and was wacked by a giant pillow made of cookies, and he ate them all and fell asleep until 2027.

Little Frog Learned How to Make Spaghetti

By Kimleen, grade 5

It all started when a toad chef came down the road with a new creation. He started to yell out, “Come look at my creation! It’s wonderful! It’s yummy!” Frogs that lived there came running towards the toad chef. They all tested Toad’s new creation. Then one frog asked, “What’s the creation called?” Toad Chef though about it then said, “Spaghetti.”

Two years later, Toad Chef became old and died. Before he died, he had written the recipe for spaghetti down. He hid it away so nobody would know where it was except for the Chosen One. To be the Chosen One, Toad Chef would have to choose you to find the recipe for spaghetti. To get him to choose you, you have to like to explore and never give up.

There was a little frog. She was twenty years old. Her name was Little Frog. She like to explore and she never gave up at anything. One night, a spirit in her dream showed up. The 12

spirit said, “You are the Chosen One. You must go find the recipe for spaghetti.” Little Frog asked, “But where will I find the recipe?” The spirit answered, “You have to pass the string of mountains, you have to eat ten pounds of spaghetti, and then you’ll find a door. Enter that door. Then you will find the spaghetti formula.”

Little Frog got ready to go on an adventure. She got her compass, some food, one pair of clothes, and she started to go on her journey. Then she said, “Oh no! I forgot my map!”

She searched all her pockets and found the map in her rearend pocket. She looked at the map and saw the string of mountains. The string of mountains was in the north. So she went north and kept checking her compass.

It took her one week to get to the string of mountains.

Then she saw a cave. In the cave, she found ten pounds of spaghetti. She knew she had to eat the ten pounds so she ate only one pound and she felt like she was going to explode.

Then she slept a little. The next day, she was famished. She ate another pound of spaghetti. A door appeared and she entered it. She kept going straight and saw a box. She knew it was the spaghetti recipe. There was a code on the box and it was a ten-letter code. She tried spaghetti and Chosen One but none of them worked. When she tried her name, it worked.

She took the recipe and went home to make spaghetti.

The Runaway Bride

The runaway bride is a woman. Everyone got married in town but this guy. This guy’s name is Jeph. Jeph is a guy who lives in a small house. No one wants to marry him but the bride, Donna. She’s tall, smart and lives in a castle with a fire-breathing dragon. Everyone else in town got married already because they looked good together. And the princess Donna said, “Everyone looks too ugly for me but that one old guy who hasn’t got married yet.”

So the guy got married to the princess and he became king and they lived happily ever after!

The Purple Duck

By Selena, grade 4

Far, far away, there lived a purple duck. It was a girl duck.

One day she got tired of being a purple duck so she went to the farm and made herself a blue duck, but she didn’t like it so she changed it again, but she didn’t like it still. She finally got to the right colour after seven tries—purple. After that, she found out she actually liked the colour of herself.

The Caveman

The caveman was going in his cave when he saw an octopus that was angry and an apple pie. The angry octopus asked the freaky man to tell the octopus’s fortune. He looked into the magic ball that was actually a talking basketball. The basketball said, “You will one day be a great womple.”

“What is a womple?” asked the octopus.

“You’ll see,” said the basketball. “It doesn’t exist now, but it will.”

“This is very silly, and makes me mad,” said the octopus.

“Leave a message in the angry basket, then,” said the freaky man.

The Ant Got Fired

By Jasmine, grade 3

Once upon a time an ant in the Big City woke up and went to work. He went the to the office. He went to his box and he opened his drawer and he couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I couldn’t believe it!” he said. “I am fired. Noooooooo!”

Maybe he can find another job. So he went to the movies and got a job there and he got fired again, and he got another job and he didn’t get fired this time, but the next week he got fired because he hit someone on the head, and then got fired and got his old job back.

Through the Door

A purple unicorn flew out of the sky and met a rabbit. The rabbit hopped everywhere. She was so surprised when a little door appeared, and through the door was a chocolate volcano. The rabbit and the unicorn got a big spoon and ate the chocolate and ran around. The unicorn ate a magic apple and they flew away with chocolate in a bowl.

The Queen is Coming and the Princess is Coming!

Once upon a time there was a princess and a queen. One day the princess was sick and the queen was helping the princess. One day the princess was feeling better but the queen was sick. So the princess helped the queen.

The Toy Soldier’s Shoes

Once upon a time there was a toy soldier who liked shoes. He wanted to buy some shoes but he did not have money. But he was too lazy to earn some money. He went to the store.

He saw this pair of shoes that he loved. But it cost $100. The shoes were shiny and had stripes, and they were his favorite colour, red.

Bee and Wasp Stings

Once my dad spoke to a bee and the bee stung my dad. A wasp stung my dad ten times. He went to the hospital, and when he was getting stung I took a picture and sent it to my classroom. Everybody laughed at my dad, and my dad grounded me and I escaped from the window. Awwwwwwww boom ow. I’m outside. Yea, I can play!

Yellow (Fiction)

Pookie ate dog food from the neighbour’s dog. He ate the dog food because he was hungry. He was the only human left and could only find dog food. He finally found food underground, where there was also water. But there was something in the water that made him go crazy. Then Pookie found a ray gun that made everyone go back to normal.

The Special Flower

Once upon a time this flower came from a special place. It is so special that it had to grow in its own special space. It got picked by Jen. She turned it into water. Then she gave it to somebody that was sick and going to have a baby. And they felt better.

My Mom’s Trip to the Zoo

By Liza, grade 1

One day my mom went to the zoo. She found a secret tunnel.

She crawled into it and she saw a little yellow thing. It looked like gold, so she crawled along. Then she found little pieces of gold. When she took one step, she saw lots of piles of money and a treasure box. She tried to get the treasure, but a skeleton popped out and said, “You will never leave if you touch my gold!” So she jumped on the rocks and pushed a log that was covering the treasure box. The treasure fell to the ground.

She hopped on the ground and climbed back. The skeleton didn’t see her. So she jumped back and crawled back to the secret tunnel, back to the zoo. She told her kids about it.

A Series of Almost-unfortunate Events

By Kyle, grade 4, and Mark, grade 3

A tired teacher went to the PNE and felt funny and fell off a roller coaster. And then a disco man was like, “Yea!” Then he got pushed into a volcano and survived. Then a shark ate him but didn’t chew him and he survived. Then he grabbed a rocket launcher, shot down a path and escaped. The end. Or to be continued. . .

The Driver’s Treasure

A nervous driver finds treasure at a concert. He drives away.

He shows his family. They find out it’s gold. Then a girl steals the treasure. They find out somebody took it. The driver goes back to the concert to find more gold. He tells a guy to find more treasures for him, to give to his parents.

The Hairy Yeti and Tianna the Baby Tiger

By Giao, kindergarten

The hairy yeti cried when the snow on his mountain melted.

There was a snow slide on the mountain that the Yeti loved very much. He went to find his friend Tianna the baby tiger.

“Do you want to play with me?” the Yeti asked Tianna.

“Yes, let’s play hide and seek” said Tianna.

Tianna ran to hide in a small igloo on the mountain. The Yeti looked all over for his friend Tianna in the igloo. All of a sudden the Yeti found his friend Tianna in the igloo! The Yeti was so happy and they played in the snow. The Yeti and Tianna played tag. Tianna could run so fast that the Yeti couldn’t catch her.

A Space Knight With a Robot Horse

By Mico, grade 4

Once upon a time, a space alien wrote a book about a space knight with a robot horse. His horse fights with his tail and he fights a space man holding gravel, and he calls the space police. They chase him down. They hit him with sticks. He makes traps with lava and with lots of arrows shooting. He escapes.

Bird Boy and Cat Girl

By Samuel, grade 5; Vincent, grade 1; and Clara, kindergarten

The Angry Birds, aliens, Belle and Miga were in a scary castle.

Two evil villains ruined the town by using a chainsaw and creepers.

Nothing happened. And then there came a story superhero. His name was Bird Boy and his friend was Cat Girl. Cat Girl had a whip and a hat like Indiana Jones (except purple) and a girl motorcycle that was pink. Bird Boy didn’t need anything—he could just fly. There was an evil bad guy named Snake Guy. Bird Boy called the secretary birds, who can eat even the deadliest black mamba, from all over the city, and they attacked Snake Guy. Cat Girl controlled the cats and tigers, and they got the leftovers.

Chelsea in the Philippines

Once upon a time there was a girl named Chelsea. She was in the Philippines. Once she threw a rock in the woods. Then this dwarf bit her ears and her ears started bleeding! She went to her mom and put medicine on it, but it didn’t get better, so her mom told her to go back to the woods and say sorry to the dwarf because he had a healing thing (medicine) for her. He gave it to her because she said sorry. It got better but it left a scar, but now it’s gone. Then she lived happily ever after with her family.

Diamond Sword

By Steven, grade 2

Once there was a player named Steven 450. He really wanted to find some gold and diamonds, so he found all the stuff that he needed for mining. There he started. He went to the closest dungeon. There he saw some zombies, skeletons, spiders, Endermen and the mythical Herobrine. At last he saw it sparkle in the dark. He put his pickaxe right through that mark. At last he found some diamonds.

Spacemen

Once upon a time there was a man. He was a superhero.

He went to every planet but not Pluto because there was a bad guy. One day the hero went to Pluto. Then the bad guy trapped him. Then a guy saved him and tied the bad guy up.

They were called spacemen.

There was an airplane named Jaykwon. Jaykwon liked to fly.

One day, he found a thousand airplanes. He met Mario and Robert. They flew to downtown. Jaykwon, Mario and Robert went shopping. They bought everything! They bought ice cream and went home.

A big shark found a big candy. Suddenly the wind picked her up. She met a duck in the sky. Then the duck sneezed. Then they went to the park. “How many people are there?” the shark said. “One million,” the duck said.

Once upon a time, a prince saw a rabbit far, far away. It made him happy. However, what really happened was a bunny found a secret treasure map! However, there is a river in front. He saw a little girl on her way home. Here came a cat.

Meow. The cat was chasing a mouse and a turkey. Here came a kangaroo. It was friendly. It kicked the cat. The cat ran away and the pet said, “Thank you.”

The Dog Boy

The dog always says, “Woof woof,” and is a werewolf. The werewolf was cooking frog soup and noodles for dinner. He wanted to play fetch and then he went to the hospital because he had a tummy ache. His friends at the hospital were named Pumpkins. And then the werewolf went to a festival and ate all the children, and that’s why he had a tummy ache.

The Boy and His Dog

Once upon a time there was a boy playing with his dog in the snow. The dog was a zombie. Then he turned back into a normal dog. He jumped into a pool and then he washed himself off. Then the boy and the dog went inside to watch TV. The dog and the boy went to sleep.

Three Wishes

In a land far away, a young girl found a troll who granted her three wishes. First she wished for ice cream. She licked the ice cream. It had sprinkles and a cherry. Her second wish was for a puppy and a kitty, also a hamster and a bunny. Her third wish was for a puppy. She was happy.

My Building!

We crafted our own buildings, and wrote about them, too.

My building is a tree house in Quebec, Canada. A kimono dragon uses this house to play and hang out. It’s the “whatever house”— you do what you want in it. You can jump off it onto another roof, then off that roof to a trampoline and off that to a cushion.

There’s a zombie in my building named Amigos. He is in the building because I kicked him out of my house. The building is in a marker.

Food Writing These pieces were written in a food-writing workshop led by Alexandra Gill, food writer for the Globe and Mail.

My favourite restaurant is Top’s on Kingsway. I had the sweet and sour chicken wings. It was very awesome! It wasn’t awesome after I ate the wings! I got more on me than in me. For dessert I had banana cream pie. It was very fluffy.

Cockney Kings is an amazing fish and chips place. Its fries have a nice, salty and classy taste to them. The fries also feel kind of soft.

What I didn’t like at McDonald’s: they use mechanically separated chicken. It was pink and looked like pink, chewed up gum. But they made it taste good! The food I like is Boston Pizza.

Area 51: A Reflection on Ché’s Presentation

I’m going to talk about Area 51. It was constructed in 1941 and established in 1943. It started small and got bigger as more was discovered. They’ve been keeping secrets from the public. Area 51 was found outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has only been seen by the employees. No one from the public has any information on what it is and what they do. Many people have been saying that they’ve been hiding UFO information from the public and they’ve been experimenting on the UFOs.

The Hat: A Reflection on Andy’s Story

Andy bought a hat because it was some golfer’s hat. He bought it at Blue Mountain and Andy met Dallas Green.

Andy’s brother bought him the hat. The two bands that Dallas Green is in are called Alexisonfire and City and Colour.

My Favourite Thing to Do in the Summer By “Norman,” grade 7

My favourite thing to do in the summer is swimming in fresh-water rivers. It’s not salty, there’s no chlorine and it’s much better. I like it because there are no rules and you’re allowed to run and you don’t have to pay. My favorite river is the Magnetawan First Nation River on my reservation, but I would like to swim in clear blue water to go scuba diving.
