Ways to Tackle Secondary English Comprehension
Studying for English, especially the ‘O’ Level English, seems like a futile thing to do. As the name ‘Comprehension’ suggests, what is crucial in this section is the ability to understand the given text and employ the appropriate skills in order to answer the question – regardless of the actual content.
Tackling the Text 1 Activating prior knowledge: These provide context, sometimes even cultural, for the content in the passage.
2 Questioning: Ask questions about the content, topic, or ideas in the text.
3 Forming connections: As you were reading, the next strategy is to make connections between the text to yourself, to other texts, and to the world.
4 Making inferences: Think beyond the words of a text to make assumptions about what is implied, even when it is not explicitly stated.
Attempting the Questions Visual text questions can be broadly categorised into three types:
1 Picture-text link: Interpret the picture and how it represents or links to the purpose of the graphic.
2 Content: Extract specific details as specified by the question.
3 Vocab-usage or style: Infer how particular word choices affect the impact of the visual text on readers.
Attempting the Questions Passage-based texts, on the other hand, generally include these categories:
1 Content-vocab: Mainly dealing with simple extracting and rephrasing.
2 Inferential: Form an inference which is not explicitly stated, supported by a clue from the text.
3 Figurative extract & explain: Extract, rephrase, and explain descriptive expressions that present a specific atmosphere, feeling, situation etc.
