SC OR IN G F OR GUI TAR With Sibelius, Guitar Pro & Neck Diagrams Pro This session will look at specific methods of notating scores for guitar. From neck diagrams, fingering and complex notation in the style of Tommy Emmanuel you will walk away with something for the guitarists in your class as well as yourself.

1. THE PROBLEMS Have you ever come across the following problems in your classroom, band or composition tasks? a) Guitarists don’t know the chords in the given band chart? b) You want to notate easier chords (voicing’s) for guitar, but don’t know the instrument well enough? c) When it comes to improvising the guitarists normally turn to the pentatonic scale and nothing else? d) Guitarists cannot read the music in band, so you want to give them a chart to find the notes? e) Notating melodies might work, with TAB, but what about other techniques like bends and hammers? f)

Want to notate a classical guitar piece but don’t know how to layout the parts?

g) See guitar symbols in printed music but don’t know how to make them in Sibelius? h) Don’t know how to print parts with TAB plus the correct symbols? i)

A student creates a composition with harmonics or tapping that needs to be notated?

Examples of contemporary acoustic performers: • Sungha Jung • Tommy Emmanuel • Andy McKee (Drifting was performed at this year’s Encore performance) • Eric Mongrain • Andrew York Whether it is from the Internet such as Ultimate-Guitar.com or from the latest rock band’s songbook, music for the guitar consists of tablature or heavily annotated charts that require you to learn an entirely new language to play them (e.g. Pop Guitar Notation Philip Tagg, 1997). How as an educator, do you help guitarists read and notate these charts? Start early: • Debbie Cracknell Enjoy Playing Guitar ISBN: 9780193559394 • Berklee Modern Method for Guitar CAT# L50449404
