OUR

JOURNEY

TOGETHER

E D I T I O N 15

(Left to right): W. Robert Berkley, Jr., President and Chief Executive Office William R. Berkley, Executive Chairman

Happy Thanksgiving. There has rarely been a time when I appreciated Thanksgiving as much as I do this year. Truly, a moment to be reminded to stop and think about all the good things in our lives and the many things for which to be thankful. It has been a difficult year. Life has been full of stress and uncertainty so that most of us have not had time to think about the good fortune in our lives. Every day there have been new challenges and new issues to confront that create anxiety. The good news is I recognize this is not a unique time in history; we have been in periods like this before and we survived and prospered subsequent to these challenging times. Because of current global communication, we see the state of affairs extended throughout the world. A retrospective examination allows us to note that the status of the pandemic and other global crises were not recognized because people were not contemporaneously aware. This was also true of civil unrest throughout the world. Instant communication changes our emotional reaction to all that is happening. By most measures, the world, in reality, is not as bad off as it feels. In the United States and Western Europe economic activity is positive, the job markets are strong and businesses are searching for employees. China is faced with economic challenges because of its construction industry but much of the rest of the world has already started on an upswing. Things are looking better and while the case count for COVID-19 is increasing, the vaccine and treatments have lowered the death rate, the numbers of severely ill, as well as lowered the needs for hospitalization.

The general dissatisfaction with both the social and political environment has created great tension and anxiety, bringing about challenges to all political processes. We see the extremes failing to reach compromise and attacking the other side instead of seeking to reach a middle ground. This is the climate that exists throughout the world. We have divisions of thought. Absent is the goal of achieving a shared outcome. Rather, the objective appears to be battling it out to get what one wants as opposed to what is best for your country. I am optimistic. Looking back 400 years to our first Thanksgiving in 1621 to the present, our country and the world have survived many crises. Each of these, on its own, seemed to predict the collapse of our society. Fortunately, the best of human nature prevailed. People realized understanding was the one thing that could lead to success. No matter how strongly held your view was, you needed to listen to the other person’s view in order to reach an outcome that would produce a satisfactory conclusion. On innumerable occasions over these past 400 years, things looked hopeless but somehow humanity was able to pull together. This requires listening, understanding, building trust and a shared hope for a better future. None of these things happen on their own. Political and social leadership is required. We are moving in that direction. Society has to be dissatisfied with the status quo in order to reach a common but imperfect agreement. We are beginning to move in that direction. It is moving slowly. It is disheartening to hear so many tell us it is hopeless but things are still getting done, things are getting better. Thanksgiving is the moment to appreciate all that we have and to recognize that we are in control of our future. Step forward. Have an open dialogue. Instead of speaking louder, listen better. Search for ways to compromise and move forward. We all want an even better Thanksgiving next year; it is up to all of us. Have a Very Happy Thanksgiving. Rob and Bill Berkley

INNOVATION Certifications Experimentation Certification is Here! One of the most important elements of an innovative culture is the ability to rapidly test our ideas in experiments. Berkley’s employees know this, considering there have been more than 50 experiments completed in SPARK! so far in 2021. If you’ve been hoping to become an expert in experimentation, and lead your team on its way to finding the most impactful ideas, you’ll be excited to hear that you can now complete an Experimentation Certification course, in I-Lab. Learn from experts like J. P. Eggers, Professor at NYU Stern School of Business, as well as from your fellow Berkley Companies.

Behavior Certification 2.0 Coming Soon Over the past 2 years, we have been introduced to each of the seven Berkley Innovation Behaviors and had the opportunity to learn more by getting certified in each behavior along the way to becoming better innovators. 2100 employees have completed all 7 of their Berkley Behavior Certifications. That’s something to celebrate! If you haven’t completed your Behavior Certifications yet, now is the time (Click here to access the existing Behavior Certifications). Beginning in December, you’ll have the opportunity to dive even deeper into the behaviors that are most important to you. Behavior Certification 2.0 is coming soon! Take your understanding of the Berkley Behaviors to the next level with in-depth articles, Skillsoft courses, videos from notable experts, and recommendations for continuing education. Choose to hone your expertise in one or several behaviors once these courses are available in I-Lab.
