• It is estimated that the Northern Growth Corridor (including Wallan) will accommodate an additional 80,000 homes by 2055, equating to approximately 250,000 people. The Wallan population is predicted to increase from approximately 14,473 in 2021 to 29,000 by 2031.

• Due to the significant growth in and around Wallan, resulting in increased traffic growth both entering and exiting Wallan, the Federal Government announced a $50 million upgrade on the Hume Freeway diamond interchange at Watson Street, Wallan as part of the Urban Congestion Fund project.

• The project will create south-facing freeway entry and exit ramps at Watson Street to align with existing north-facing ramps. The upgrades will deliver new south-facing ramps from Watson Street onto the Hume Freeway, allowing direct freeway access and reducing traffic through the Wallan Town Centre from commuters travelling towards Melbourne.

• The project which will be going under construction will give motorists travelling to and from Wallan a shorter and more direct route with a reduction in traffic congestion for northbound vehicles exiting the freeway in peak travel times and will also help to ease congestion through the main street of Wallan.
