Why do we feel that investing in the community is so important? Because of the sizable returns.
NW Natural is proud to have served our customers for over 163 years. With that pride comes the knowledge that we have an even greater responsibility to the community at large. That’s why on any given day you’ll find our employees helping others. And the fruits of those efforts are visible in the faces of those who need us most.
We believe that if we put the time in to help our neighbors through philanthropy, volunteering or just plain sweat, the rewards are tenfold.
Together with numerous charitable organizations, we’re doing what any good neighbor would do. We’re working to make this the kind of place we can call home. And that’s the biggest return of all.

‘Get Happy’ at this year’s Home & Garden Show
It’s been an exciting and wonderful year of rebuilding and reconnecting. So it’s fitting that our theme is “Get Happy” at the 43rd Annual Lane County Home & Garden Show Presented by NW Natural!
Laugh and learn with comedian Joey Green, an author and National Lampoon contributor and a regular on Good Morning America, The View and late-night shows. Joey will be sharing crazy hacks and offbeat remedies during “Wacky Uses” and “Amazing Pet Cures.” His shows will be deadpan humor sprinkled with useful tips.
Making his return to the show is crowd favorite Ciscoe Morris. He’ll be presenting “Gardening in Margaritaville” as well as offering planting solutions for the dreaded hellstrip that runs between the road and your sidewalk. Watch for flying Brussels sprouts at Morris’
“Stump the Chump” session – and maybe even win plants or his new book!
Enjoy two fabulous garden design talks by Loree Bohl, known as the Fearless Gardener. Loree is the founder of TheDangerGarden.com where she rather amusingly warns that with pointy succulents, you must be careful, because you can poke your eye out!
In a happy mood for food? Chef Gracie Schatz, founder of the Marigold Cooking Collective, will share recipes using local high-quality ingredients paired with imperfect foods with samples for all. Pizza Palooza with outdoor pizza-making demos is scheduled all three days!
We’re thrilled to present all the new products in this year’s show: swing sets, giant plate-sized dahlia bulbs, the Mean Green Electric Lawn Mowers, beekeeping supplies, swim spas, unique patio covers, exotic lilies, and a tiny house built right here by Motley Tiny Homes.
With over two acres of exhibits, homeowners will find ideas, products, services, experts and inspiration to get projects going – inside and out. This week’s home and garden marketplace offers one-stop home and garden shopping with a twist of fun.
Our experts will help guide you to the next steps to get your projects going. With everyone and everything in one place, you can select materials and schedule your appointments for bids right at the show. Remember, the best projects start with the right expert and materials.
For many, the show is like a big family reunion of Lane County’s best home and garden trades, retailers, experts and our neighbors. It’s all about community and craft. The Berg Team is honored to present seven days of laughter, business, entertainment, handshakes, and hugs at Lane County’s biggest home and garden party!
Please enjoy these VIP tickets, compliments of our 43rd AnnualPresenting Sponsor NW Natural.
Cheers to Getting Happy! Karen Ramus, Show Director

You can use SPAM for what?
Home hack guru Joey Green brings his zany but useful tips to this year’s Home & Garden Show
By Jon Bell
He’s gotten Jay Leno to shave his face with peanut butter on national TV, dumped a can of Miller beer on Conan O’Brien’s head and taught Martin Short how to polish furniture with SPAM.
Now, Joey Green, who’s been called the “Pantry Professor” and “a hyperactive, testosterone-charged version of Heloise,” is bringing his zany but practical uses for brand-name products to the Lane County Home & Garden Show for the first time ever.
A former advertising copywriter and contributing editor to the National Lampoon, Green has made a name for himself over the years as a guru who’s come up
with or shared countless ways to use common household products in uncommon ways. Some seem almost absurd, like swinging a pillowcase full of lettuce over your head as a salad spinner or tying a trash bag around your waist as an apron. But others make perfect sense. Washing your hubcaps in the dishwasher? Treating sunburn with iced tea? Cleaning a toilet with Coca-Cola? Polishing a diamond ring in Efferdent denture cleaner. Those are just a few of the hundreds of legitimate quick fixes Green’s come up with over the past more than three decades.
“Any problems that folks have, there’s usually a very simple solution,” says Green, who once got into a whipped cream battle on TV with Rosie O’Donnell. “I’m here to solve just about any problems
– except for marital.”
Green got his first ideas for using products in unique ways while he was writing advertisements for the New York ad agency J. Walter Thompson. He and his fellow writers had been charged with coming up with unusual uses for Nestea iced tea. An accountant at the agency was also an avid sailor who frequently got sunburned. He shared a story of how he’d filled his bathtub with Nestea and soaked in it for relief. Turns out the natural tannins in the tea provide soothing comfort for sunburned skin.
“Right then and there I thought, ‘This should be in a book,’” Green says.
Though he didn’t act on it right then, Green kept the idea with him and brought it back out about 10 years later when he

heard about alternate uses for SPAM, including polishing furniture with it. That prompted a trip to the grocery store to buy everything from Jell-O and Tang to Coke. He wrote to the companies to see how their customers had used the different products for unintended purposes –and he was off to the races.
Now, some 15 books later – he’s actually written more than 60, 15 or so that are about various product uses – Green truly is an alternative-use guru. His titles
include “Joey Green’s Kitchen Magic,” “Joey Green’s Cleaning Magic” and “Joey Green’s Amazing Pet Cures.” He’s also written light-hearted books about travel, survival and history, and in 2018, he teamed up with prolific author James Patterson on a middle-grade novel called “Not so Normal Norbert.” Green’s hands-on presentations at this year’s Home & Garden Show will be his first ever in Oregon.

Gracie Schatz founded Marigold Cooking Collective, a community cooking school with a teen job training program, after 15 years of working in the food industry in restaurants, on farms and managing butcher shops. She believes food has the wondrous power of connecting people to their homes, the seasons, their history, and each other. She also just really loves to eat. At the show, Gracie—in partnership with Lane County’s Eat Smart, Waste Less program—will explore the intersection of creating recipes using high-quality, local ingredients paired with less conventional “ugly” or “distressed” foods that may otherwise be thrown away.

Plants of paradise
Ciscoe Morris returns to the Home & Garden Show with tips on mixing up a floral Margaritaville
By Jon Bell
Theremay not be a blown-out flipflop or any booze in the blender, but celebrated Seattle gardener Ciscoe Morris plans to bring a little tropical flavor to this year’s Home & Garden Show with his presentation, “Gardening in Margaritaville.”
“It’s going to be all about plants that look really tropical, that are big and put on a good show,” says Morris, author of multiple books and a regular guest on Seattle TV and radio programs.
The longtime director of Seattle University’s garden program, Morris has a long list of tropical plants that he’s got in his garden for pops of color and hints of island getaways. For starters, there’s gunnera and tetrapanax, both green giants that add an air of prehistory to any garden. Gunnera has huge green leaves that
can sprawl to more than 4 feet wide; the plant itself can hit 8 feet tall. And tetrapanax, also known as the rice paper plant, can soar up to 15 feet tall. Morris has one in his garden that’s at least 12.
“It looks so cool in my garden,” he says. “People walk by and are like, ‘Whoa, what is that thing?’”
Morris is also big on the honey bush, an evergreen shrub from South Africa that has a unique blue foliage, and hardy banana trees,
which are native to the Ryuku Islands near Japan. Morris has one in his yard that’s 12 feet tall and as tropical-looking as they come. For even more of a Jimmy Buffett feel, Morris likes the crinodendron hookerianum, or the lantern tree, which has bright red lantern-shaped flowers, and daphniphyllum, an evergreen shrub with purple-pink blooms.
Give ‘em hell
In addition to recommendations for plants with hints of the tropics, Morris also knows what works best in hellstrips – those strips of land in between the sidewalk and the street. They’re often not the most scenic swaths of yard, their soil’s not usually very good and because they’re surrounded by pavement and concrete, they can get roasted by the summer heat, thus their name.
“It actually can be a beautiful space,” Morris says, “you just have to know some tricks to be able to plant a beautiful garden in that strip.”
Step one: fix the soil. That means digging up what’s in there and replacing it with a nutrient-rich soil that will be good for heat-loving plants. Step two, choose plants that will

Hummingbirds are drawn to the nectar of color flowers like salvias and cupheas.
Morris will suggest native Pacific Northwest plants for attracting hummingbirds.

thrive in your hellstrip’s hotness. Morris says herbs like lavender and rosemary are great options, as are certain rose varieties and salvias; his favorite salvia is hot lips, which has red and white blooms that burst in the summer.
On top of sprucing up your hellstrip
with a garden, there’s an added benefit: birds and bees. Hummingbirds are attracted to salvias and bees love lavender and blue blossoms.
“This strip and these plants are great for pollinators,” Morris says. “Bees go absolutely nuts for lavender.”
Stumpin’ and chumpin’
Morris will round out his Home & Garden Show appearance on Sunday with his signature Q&A session, which he calls “Stump the Chump.”. Gardeners stuck for answers with problem plants or veggies can ask Morris for guidance; if they want to win a prize in the process – say a nice garden tool or a limited edition “Gardening with Ciscoe” T-shirt – they have to solve one of his tough “Ciscoe Stumper” questions.
“Those are so hard,” he says. “They throw people into tizzies of nervous anxiety.”

Bye-bye bathtubs
Luxury showers, statement vanity areas are displacing the big tubs of yore
By Jon Bell
Over the past few decades, there have been times when homebuilders have leaned more toward a bigger is better philosophy. And not just with the homes themselves, but what’s gone inside them, too. A prime example? Big bathtubs.
“In the 1980s and 1990s and in the early 2000s, builders constructed larger homes with larger bathrooms, often with huge
bathtubs,” says Mariko Peters, a kitchen and bath designer with Eugene’s Castile Kitchen & Bath.
Well, in 2023, those big tubs are being shown the door. Not only do they take up a ton of valuable space, but they’re inefficient and downright impractical.
“Many people now are more practical and energy conscious,” Peters says. “They’re replacing the unused oversized bathtub with a smaller tub that can actually be used.”
Rachael Bineham, an interior designer with ReVision Design Build in Eugene, has seen the same thing: clients who are tired of their big tubs and want to utilize the space better. She says people are
moving away from big tubs and toward smaller ones, or they’re doing away with the tub altogether.
“We’ve seen a lot of people gravitate to these more luxurious showers,” Bineham says. “And if the spaces where the tubs were aren’t taken up that way, we do a
large statement vanity area with lots of storage area and custom features.”
In many instances, Bineham says the focus gets put on expanding the shower area and replacing what the jetted tub once offered with a steam shower, aromathera-

py or water therapy.
“The shower systems themselves are pretty advanced,” she says. “There are fixtures that use water technology to pinpoint muscle groups so you can get a whole massage experience in your shower with body jets and things like that.”
Rachael Kaminski of Kaminski Construction in Eugene says the options for upping the master suite shower game these days are fantastic. There are multi-sensory steam showers that fuse steam with scent, sound, light and water to create an elevated spa experience. And some free-standing water massage bathtubs feature chromatherapy lights, which can create a soothing environment in the master suite.
“Bathrooms can provide you with a peaceful oasis where you can unwind and regain energy for a new day,” Peters says. “I hope people consider bathroom remodels as not just a cosmetic change, but a treat to achieve healthier living.”
Other Trends of the times
In addition to the shift away from titan-
ic tubs, Peters says another trend is that more and more people are treating their master suites as living spaces more than just traditional bath functioning spaces.
“Turning a master bathroom into a master suite incorporating bathroom features with a closet system and seating areas is popular,” she says, adding that homeowners of all age groups are also opting for aging-in-place features like curbless showers and heated tile floors.
Bineham says easy-to-install bidet seats have also become popular, as have large format porcelain tiles, which limit grout lines and make maintenance easier. Rather than small tiles, which require plenty of grout and, as a result, cleaning, single slabs can be installed for an entire floor or shower wall.
“Those are a really unique look that a lot of people like,” Bineham says.
She also says that people shouldn’t be afraid to take some chances in the design of their master bathrooms and get what they want. After all, they’re the ones using it every day.
“The bathroom is a really great space
to take some design risks you wouldn’t normally do elsewhere in your house,” she says. “Think about it as both an artistic space, but also as a functional space and how it can set your day off on the right tone.”

Wantto attract a plethora of fascinating pollinators to your garden this summer? Rosie Sullivan, co-owner of N&M Herb Nursery in Hubbard, has got the secret. And while many may think that color is the key, there’s something else that attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators to certain plants even more: nectar.
“They don’t care as much about the color as the nectar,” says Sullivan, whose family nursery has been around since 1992. “They’ll go to whatever has the most nectar.”
The good thing is that many of the plants that draw in hummingbirds and butterflies just so happen to come in bright, splashy colors. So not only do you
get to experience the wildlife, you get a full spectrum of colors in your garden or on your patio too.
“It’s just so entertaining,” Sullivan says. “You can have a beautiful garden and feed wildlife at the same time.”
To draw in hummingbirds, Sullivan says to go with plants from the salvia, cuphea and Agastache families. One of her best-selling cuphea is the Mexican cigar Plant or firecracker Plant, which explodes in tubular red flowers rimmed in white. A similar cuphea, called Honeybells, blooms more pinkish with yellow tips. As for salvias, Sullivan says most any will do, and colors range from blue and red to magenta, pink and white.
While hummingbirds like the deep-blossomed varieties, butterflies are more about open-faced blooms. For

those, Sullivan likes heliotropes, verbenas, echinacea and lantanas, all of which add greenery, color and beautiful butterflies to any garden or patio container.
Most of the above plants start blooming in May and last until the first frost. Some varieties will come back the next year;
others are one season and done. But that’s not too big a deal, as Sullivan says most pollinator-attracting plants are easy for gardeners of any skill level. They’re generally drought-tolerant and can be planted in the ground or in pots. In fact, many different kinds of these plants can be put
into one pot, offering hummingbirds what Sullivan calls a hummingbird buffet.
“We’ll take seven different varieties and put them in one pot,” she says. “The hummingbirds love them.”
Sullivan will also put pollinator-attracting plants in hanging baskets, which helps keep them out of reach of any nosy felines.
In addition to a big display of colorful plants at this year’s Home & Garden Show, Sullivan will also bring a bunch of Red Tigers, a flowering maple tree that’s also been known to draw hummingbirds and butterflies.

Butterflies prefer open-faced blooms like echinacea.
For attracting hummingbirds to your yard, it’s hard to beat colorful salvias like these.

That’s because many natural gas appliances continue to perform during a power outage. If you’re in the market for a new home or new natural gas appliances, there are a few things to check before buying if this capability is important to you.
Hot water when you need it
Whether for bathing, showers, or for any number of other household tasks, having hot water during power outages can’t be understated. A number of today’s tankless water heaters – in addition to their smaller size and ability to provide
near-instant hot water – are able to operate with a battery backup, so they can continue to provide hot water if the power goes out. Plus having a battery backup in your home could also give you the ability to charge smaller devices like laptops and cell phones during outages.
Turn up the heat
A natural gas fireplace can continue to provide warmth in a power outage. As you’re shopping, note that many modern gas fireplaces re-quire electricity to light the pilot. Look for a model that has a battery backup system for the ignitor.
Generate your own power
Don’t worry about the backup batteries and add a natural gas generator. You can
give your home the power to keep all your important systems running when the weather has other plans.
Preparing for year-round performance
There are a lot of manufacturers out there and even more high-quality options. With the right research and questions, you can create a home that’s ready for almost anything nature brings your way.

Waste not, want not
Chef Gracie Schatz talks ‘kitchen thrift’ during a cooking demo at the Home & Garden Show
By Jon Bell
Have some deflated-looking produce in the fridge? A pile of onion scraps left on your cutting board? Don’t pitch ‘em. Instead, get creative with any ingredients you may have laying around and whip up something fabulous.
That’s the take from Gracie Schatz, a longtime chef, butcher shop manager and the founder of the Marigold Cooking Collective.
“I’ve always tried to think about the kitchen in a way where you waste nothing,” says Schatz, who also teaches cooking classes through her Eugene nonprofit collective. “In a lot of cultures, you don’t
have excess food and you don’t get to waste anything. It’s a great way to stimulate creativity.”
Schatz, who spent 15 years in the food industry before launching the Marigold Cooking Collective three years ago, will be presenting a live cooking demonstration at this year’s Home & Garden Show. On hand will likely be some of the teenagers who are part of her teen training program, which aims to introduce youngsters to the world of food – and pays them a livable wage while they’re at it.
“Working with kids is the best ever,” Schatz says. “They are so passionate, and a lot of them don’t have a lot of other op-
portunities like this. It’s exciting to bring them into the culinary world.”

Schatz offers a culinary training program for teens that introduces them to the world of food. Schatz’s cooking demo, titled “Embracing Kitchen Thrift to Minimize Waste and Optimize Deliciousness,” will showcase how home cooks can utilize everything in their kitchen and avoid throwing out much of anything.
The demo is in partnership with “Eat
Smart, Waste Less – Lane County,” a program that aims to educate households on how to make small changes to reduce food waste.

Thrift in the kitchen
Three tips from Gracie Schatz for reducing waste in your kitchen:
• After chopping vegetables, don’t throw away the scraps. Instead, put them, along with bones and other scraps, in the freezer and use to make a nice stock or sauce.
• Shop with your meals in mind. Plan meals that will go the extra mile, like a roast chicken, which can be used as the main course one night and for leftovers the next day.
• Keep a well-stocked pantry of vinegars, spices and condiments, all of which can be used to turn basic ingredients into something inspiring.
Food Waste Prevention Week April 10-16
Did you know that nearly 20 percent of Lane County’s garbage is wasted food?
Oregon households could save $1,600 annually simply by using all the food they purchase.
Reducing food waste is also the most important action we can take to minimize the impacts of the climate crisis.
During Food Waste Prevention Week (April 10-16), learn more about why food waste matters and how to take action to reduce waste at home, work, and in our communities.

Color is king
Interior trends are moving away from drab grays to a splashier spectrum
For years, the trend in interior design has been to go with grays and beiges. But talk to Eugene-area interior designers and others in the industry, and you’ll learn that there’s now something a little more colorful going on.
“In recent years, we’ve seen a shift toward an embracing of color as well as neutrals that are warmer than the grays and whites of the previous decade,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “This change in
focus is emblematic, as people are looking at color more as a way to express a feeling or mood instead of just creating aesthetic impact.”
Yes, color is king again, whether that’s brightly colored sofas, flooring that’s moving away from gray toward brown or more colorful tiles in the kitchen and bath.
“Everything comes back around,” says Cheyenne Lindberg, an interior designer with La-Z-Boy. “We are seeing movement away from the gray scene and rooms of matchy-matchy furniture. We are seeing movement toward really neat sofas, sec-
tionals and chairs in bright pops of color.”
Daryl Collins, an interior designer with Imperial Floors, says she has seen a similar move away from gray in flooring.
“We’re seeing a shift from gray to brown,” she says. “People are looking for browns and lighter-colored floors. I think people are just shifting to warmer colors. There are trends, and things go through periods, and so I think people are just looking for something new.”
Material-wise, Collins says luxury vinyl plank flooring is in high-demand, both because of its appearance and its dura-

Color has come back to everything from backsplash tile to kitchen cabinets.
bility. Carpeting is still big for bedrooms and family rooms, and Marmoleum has risen in popularity for bathrooms in part because it’s available in – you guessed it –lots of colors.
Collins says when deciding on colors, it’s not always about practicality.
“From a design standpoint, it’s good to
go with colors that match your personality and home style,” she says. “It’s your home and you need to make it your space.”
That said, having the help of a professional designer and experienced project managers, like those at Imperial, can make all the difference.
Color has also come back in a big way
in the world of tile, according to Allison Allen, a designer at Stone Works International in Eugene.
“The days of plain white subway tile are behind us,” she says. “Now it’s all about texture and depth. Warmer tones, shade variation and antiqued ‘worn’ detailing add timeless beauty to a space.”
As for countertops, Allen says white, marble-looking manufactured quartz is still a favorite, especially for how it pairs with stained wood cabinets. She also says quartzites, which are naturally formed stones, not manufactured, appeal to those going for a more natural look.
“These exotic slabs offer graceful patterns similar to a marble but have a denser body that holds up to the daily use of a kitchen,” she says. “They run at a steeper price point, so they are often featured on a kitchen island with a more subtle quartz or granite on the perimeter.”
No matter the trends, Collins says when it comes to picking materials, go with what appeals to you most – colorful or not.
“Go with your vibe,” she says. “It’s your home and it needs to be your space regardless of the trends.”

Cutting-edge Gardening
By Jon Bell
Picture a traditional garden in the Pacific Northwest, and what likely comes to mind are colorful roses, bushy rhododendrons and azaleas and the long green blades of sword ferns. You’re probably not envisioning the spiky agaves and cacti that would look more at home in the arid lands of Arizona than in the damp, dank Northwest.
But longtime gardener and author Loree Bohl has filled her Portland garden with all kinds of head-turning, spiky and sharp plants, including cacti, agave and a range of other horticultural wonders. In fact, so pointy is Bohl’s garden that her husband once worried that their pet pug
was at risk of poking an eye out. With that worry came a term that stuck and even became the name of Bohl’s garden-inspired website, “Danger Garden.”
“I just have a lot of spikes, and my husband came up with the idea that our pug was in a dangerous garden,” Bohl says. “We have so many visitors who end up bleeding. They stop to take a photo and don’t look at where they’re stepping. I don’t want to hurt people, but you have to be careful around here.”
Born in Spokane, Bohl grew up in a family who gardened all the time. She moved to Portland in 2004 and instantly connected with the Rose City’s vibrant gardening community.
“The gardening community here is just amazingly welcoming, and I met so many people,” she says.
The right stuff
Though she has a small container vegetable garden in her driveway, Bohl says she’s primarily into ornamentals, includ-

From agaves to cacti, Portland author Loree Bohl gets pokey in her garden –and encourages others to do the same
Loree Bohl’s garden in Portland is a head-turning mix of unique – and often sharp – plants like the whale’s tongue agave shown here.

ing shrubs and ground covers. She’s also a big fan of agave, cacti, succulents and unique ferns, all of which can be grown in Oregon if the conditions and species are the right ones.
“There are some species that are hardier than others and some that can stand being in our wetter climate,” Bohl says. “You also have to plant them in the right location and prep the soil because they need
different nutrients.”
For those looking to add a little sharpness or danger to their gardens, Bohl recommends ovatifolia, more commonly known as whale’s tongue. It’s got a pretty, frosty blue color and is one of the best agaves for the Northwest climate. She also likes ferns from the genus pyrrosia, including the felt fern and leather fern.
“They don’t have the traditional frond,” Bohl says. “They’re tougher looking and have fabulous leaf shapes.”
One other showstopper to consider: Arctostaphylos manzanita, a variety of the native manzanita tree. The tree’s reddish-brown bark and winding, striking branch system make a bold statement in any Northwest garden.
What makes you happy
In addition to her years of gardening, Bohl is also a prolific plant writer who’s
written for a range of publications and has had an active blog since 2009. In 2020, Timber Press published her book, “Fearless Gardening: Be Bold, Break the Rules, and Grow What You Love,” which captures Bohl’s philosophy on gardening.
“I think there’s an idea that gardening has rules. And people don’t want to kill plants. They think it’s embarrassing,” she says. “With my book, it’s more about giving people permission to break the rules, to experiment and grow things that make them happy. That’s what gardening should be.”

Bountiful berries
Tips and tricks for growing and enjoying some of Oregon’s best berries
Oregon is fruit friendly. And of all the sweet things that grow well here, berries are at the top of the cornucopia (so they don’t get squished). Good, fresh berries are hard to get at the store - even sometimes at the farmers’ market because the fruit is fragile. Homegrown will give you the best berries.
I’ll go through the big four first, but variety is the spice of the table, so stick with me so you can consider lingonberries, seaberries or goji berries.
1. Blackberries. I have a tiny patch of controlled invasive Himalayan blackberries (they are actually Armenian blackberries) in one corner of my yard, but probably should get rid of them because my cultivated berries are earlier, tastier and less vicious. There are many blackberries that have been developed in Oregon. Marionberries, Olallieberries, and Columbia Giant Thornless Blackberries. Blackberries are almost pest free (birds and raccoons will eat them) and
now, there are many that are thorn-free. Picking thorn free berries is pleasant, not confrontational. I will not plant anymore berries with thorns. A trellis is a good idea/necessity. My thornless Arapaho berries grow as a bush or shrub. They only spread by having the tip of a vine touch the ground - not through root shoots. This makes weeding and controlling the plants easy. Pruning is easy. Cut off any dead vines and any that are growing where you don’t want them.
2. Blueberries. They come in all sizes and a variety of ripening times. That means you can have fresh blueberries June through September. If you have a lot of birds, you will have fewer berries and may even need some netting or chicken wire to get a good harvest. Blueberries are shallow rooted and need regular watering to produce well. Acidic soil is better for blueberries too, but most of our soils are acidic, so altering the chemistry is rarely necessary. Pruning is not necessary, but
clipping off some shoots will increase air circulation, make picking easier and keep the plants low enough to keep you off a ladder.
3. Raspberries. They come in three colors: red, yellow and champagne. I prefer the taste of the red, but the others have a fine flavor too. A lot of people trellis their raspberries. I don’t, and that makes their wandering nature easier to manage. Raspberries will move around your yard and will produce better if you can let them. Pruning is easy, but causes a lot of confusion. Let me go through the life cycle. A plant will come up from roots or a runner, grow all summer and produce some berries at the tip. Next year, that same cane will produce berries along the full length of the cane in early summer. We cut our canes back to about 5 feet after the fall harvest (that can continue into December) so that picking (mostly for my wife and grandchildren) is easier. After the summer harvest, the cane will

4. Strawberries. There are June Bearers, Everbearing and Day Neutral. June Bearers will give you the most fruit - sometime between late May and July - depending on the weather. The
get June Bearers. If you want a few berries for cereal, get the other types, but don’t expect a lot of berries in the heat of summer (that’s what your blackberries are for). The plants will produce runners that will become new plants, ideally when
drop steeply, and you should abandon the old patch and put in a new one (with your own runners, or with plants from a nursery if you want to try a new variety which, which I highly recommend). Slugs can take a bite out of your harvest. Squirrels can take the whole thing. Sluggo, bread dough bait and nets can give you more of the fruit.
I have currants – sour (oops, I mean tart) – and early, and I pick huckleberries and elderberries. I intend to plant seaberries and honey berries (how sweet that will be), but I am running out of space in my yard – and room in my stomach. If you have other berries, or plant them later, let me know the good and bad points of the huge fruit world that we Oregonians have the option of growing.
