The downtown Winter Garden parking garage is on schedule for substantial completion by Sept. 1.

Substantial completion does

not mean that all work is completed but that cars may begin to park in the garage on that date, according to city staff.

The two-story garage will have a ground floor with two supporting levels, meaning there will be three surfaces available for parking. In total, the garage will have 527 parking spots available, including 11 accessible spaces.

It evokes thoughts of the beach, pool and sun.

But for some young entrepreneurs in West Orange, it signifies a time when school is out and more time can be spent focusing on making some extra cash.

Meet three local youngsters who are showing that the virtues of hard work and entrepreneurialism are alive and well.

PRE-LOVED TOY SALE When Franco Umandal, 5, wanted a VTech Watch, his sister suggested he sell some of his old toys to make money.

So in the heat of the afternoon that day, the Umandals set up an impromptu garage sale to sell the toys. They created a sign that read “Pre-loved Toys.” “(I sold) a Spongebob pillow,” he said. He also sold a collection of smaller toys and figurines he had.

“It was really nice because a lot of ladies came over (and made purchases), even if they didn’t really need the toys,” his mother Laurie Umandal said. “They found Franco very cute.”

The sale started at noon, and people were still making their way over to the Umandals’ at 7 p.m. that evening. In all, Franco made $54 — exactly what he needed to purchase the Vtech Watch from Amazon.

Franco, who lives in Winter Garden, still has toys left over that he plans to donate to other kids in need, through Goodwill or another charity.

He has two words for the community that came out to purchase his pre-loved toys.

“Thank you.”

Three years ago, Gabriella Dalmeida wanted to make extra spending money.

She already received an allowance from doing chores around the house, but she wasn’t making quite what she wanted.

One day, while walking her dogs, Balto and Charlie, an idea came to mind: Why not get paid for walking dogs?

Dalmeida, now 14, lives in Independence, so she decided to post on the neighborhood’s Next Door website — a site that allows neighbors to network. She advertised herself as a pet sitter, and when people asked her about her experience, she talked about how she cares for her two dogs.

At first, she started pet sitting for people she knew, but then she branched out to other neighbors’ homes, as long as she could meet them beforehand.

Three years later, she has been hired to watch pets more than 60 times.

“I like it because I love dogs,” she said. “I love doing my job even though it’s not considered a job in a way.”

Dalmeida is willing to watch most animals, though most of her experience is with dogs and the occasional cat. The only animal she says she does not wish to take care of are snakes.

When Dalmeida first started the business, she took care of a dog named Bella, an Australian Cattle Dog and German Shepherd mix. Bella is playful, and she became one of her favorite dogs to care for. Dalmeida still watches Bella regularly.

She likes to stay in the surrounding neighborhoods when she agrees to pet-sitting jobs, because her mother has to give her a ride to any job she accepts.

Kylie Beyl, a 16-year-old student at West Orange High School, wanted to find a way to get a job but work on her own schedule.

The answer came when her mother, Tracy Lewis, received her FabFitFun subscription box in the mail.

The box, which is delivered to their home during different seasons of the year, contains a mix of health, beauty and fitness products. But Lewis and Beyl were especially impressed with the Inkling perfumes in the box, and Beyl decided she would like to try to sell the perfumes.

They contacted the company, which agreed to let Beyl start distributing and selling the product.

For everything Beyl sells, she receives 50%. She sells her products at events like the Ocoee Family Fest, and she plans to have a booth at the Winter Garden Farmer’s Market the next time space is available.

She also sells the product on social media and at her website, ksinkling.com.

Recently, she has also begun selling Perfectly Posh products, which include lotions, bath scrubs and other pampering products.

Soon after Beyl began working for Inkling, she and her mother signed up for a mission trip to Swaziland, where they will join a team through Children’s Cup. Beyl and Lewis sponsor a child in Swaziland, so they will get to meet their child while they are there, as well as serve at CarePoint, a safe place where children can go for food, medical needs and education.

In addition to raising money for her Swaziland mission trip, Beyl also hopes to go on a France summer trip with West Orange High School before she graduates.

“I have a jar for Africa, and I have another jar for France,” Beyl said. “In my room I have them sitting out. I see it everyday so it motivates me.”

and now they have a chance to visit the country’s national parks and landmarks.

“We’re also not just confined to the motor home; we have the outdoors just outside our door,” Ali said. “We can go for walks, sit at the picnic table, go swimming or ride our bikes whenever we want.”

There will be plenty of hiking, too, as all of the Elhajjs enjoy being out in nature.

Ali’s passion is landscape photography, and his photos will serve as a source of income for the family, as well. He can teach workshops and online webinars and sell his photos.

In addition, he works as a technical project manager at a fully virtual health education startup.

li and Jennifer Elhajj felt God was calling them to serve; the next step was to figure out exactly what that meant for them and their five children. This week, the Winter Garden family of seven — with children ranging in age from 3 to 13 — expects to head out on an adventure that will take them around the country to engage in important causes.

“Once we, as a family, understood this is what we were supposed to do, it became a matter of asking the question: How can we do this?” Ali said.

Jennifer admits this major change is taking her out of her comfort zone, but she is passionate about seeing the future unfold and anxious to begin the journey.

They rented out their 4,000-square-foot, six-bedroom home, sold most of their belongings and moved into a 400-square-foot motor home.

“We’ve always been adventurous but never imagined that would involve moving our family of seven into a space less than half the size of our driveway,” she said.

The bottom floor must still be poured, and the stucco must be added to the outside. Construction crews must also add trim work and put in lights, elevators and other electronic equipment.

Ultimately, the garage will have two elevators and stairs at each of the four corners.

The parking garage is being constructed at the intersection of South Boyd and Tremaine streets, on top of a busy existing parking lot. In order to compensate for the temporary closure of the lot, the city has used a few methods to

Because the total storage space for clothing for seven people is about one-third the space Jennifer used to have just for herself, they had to get both creative and realistic.

Everyone gets three pairs of shoes. The children have one large drawer each for daytime clothes and a smaller one for all other clothing; the parents get the closet shelves.

Underneath the dinette are two slide-out drawers that hold toys and board games.

“Living in an almost 4,000-square-foot home, we took it for granted that every routine activity had a defined space and there was plenty of privacy afforded by six bedrooms, even for guests,” she said. “Our main living area also serves as our kitchen, dining room, homeschool room and bedroom for all five kids; the couches and dinette convert into beds,” she said. “Ali even recently discovered that while parked, he can position the steering wheel in just such a way as to make it a decent desk for his laptop.”

The children can stream music and movies while they’re on the road, and they will have their video games. An onboard generator and an inverter will keep everything charged.

THE NECESSITIES

First, city staff started a valet parking service for downtown visitors during weekend evenings.

The service has gotten less use than city staff anticipated, City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said, with about 20 cars per night.

The city had temporary parking lots installed around the downtown area, providing visitors with 350 alternative parking spots.

The lot at Smith and Main Street rarely has been filled, but it has been a place for construction workers to park without taking spots otherwise used by downtown visitors.

Jennifer was once a motivational speaker in high schools, encouraging tens of thousands of students to make the most of whatever stage of life they were in.

“I’ve always wanted to combine those two elements and plan to speak in churches as we go, encouraging women to live their faith fearlessly and in a tangible way that brings positive change to their … communities,” she said.

She will collect donations to go toward clean water and the fight against human trafficking.

Serving others comes natural for both Jennifer and Ali. “I’ve always thought of life as more than just work and have always wanted to serve others as well,” he said. “I look at this as a coming together of all we were made to do. I’m looking forward to doing it now rather than waiting for an unknown time in the future.”

The Elhajj children have been exposed to faith and giving all their lives, their parents said.

The family regularly attends both Mosaic Church and First Baptist Church of Winter Garden.

“The kids have always known what Mommy and Daddy were doing and understood why it was important,” Ali said. “Now that they’re a bit older … we’re looking forward to them engaging more and being a part of everything we do.”

While their plan isn’t completely spelled out, they do know they’re starting in Key West and traveling to all 50 states. It might take a few years, but they know they can return to Winter Garden because they didn’t sell their house.

“Having lived in many different places throughout our marriage, … we can both … say Winter Garden is the … only place where we have felt completely comfortable and at home,” Jennifer said.

Overall, the parking options have helped to mitigate parking problems that downtown business owners and their customers experience.

“The negative effect from the parking garage hasn’t been near as significant as (business owners) expected, so most of our merchants have been pleasantly surprised,” Bollhoefer said.

For the main entrées, Kodra will be offering pasta al forno, also known as baked ziti, chicken marsala and one of his personal favorites, chicken florentine, which is sautéed with spinach, mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes and topped with melted mozzarella.

Kodra hasn’t begun advertising his upcoming restaurant just yet, but he’s noticed the sign has been attracting a lot of attention from locals already.

“They cannot wait, and they come and ask me every day, ‘When are you gonna open,’ and they’re so excited,” Kodra said.

Ocoee commission insists on lobbyistlaw firm merger Officials informed lobbying firm Global Development Business Consulting, Inc., that it had until November to complete a merger with the law firm Akerman, LLP. GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER OCOEE After hearing presentations from four lobbyist firms back in April, Ocoee commissioners decided to award a contract for federal lobbying services to Global Development Business Consulting Inc. That approval came under the condition that Global will merge with the law firm Akerman, LLP. That particular condition was front and center at Ocoee’s June 21 commission meeting as, to date, Global Development has not yet merged with Akerman.

Because of this, commissioners passed a motion June 21 which gave Global Development an ultimatum: If it does not merge with Akerman law firm by November, the commission will rescind the contract and award it to Alcade & Fay, LTD Inc., instead.

Ocoee council members are insistent on the Global-Akerman merger because currently, local state Rep. Randolph Bracy, who is Global Development’s principal, is not a registered federal lobby-

ist — but Akerman is.

During the council meeting, commissioner Rosemary Wilsen expressed concern over hiring a lobbyist not registered to work in Washington, D.C. The council needs federal lobbyist services for an ongoing issue with the Rose Hill neighborhood’s ZIP code.

“Six or seven years ago we annexed in Rose Hill phase two and three and you would assume the ZIP code would change to 34761, but it did not,” Wilsen said.

“The post office has not agreed to change it from 32818. So, that is something we do need to work on.”

Although residents have been paying taxes to the city of Ocoee, they have not been receiving the benefits of having an Ocoee address and ZIP code.

“I’m very concerned because they have an issue that has created higher insurance rates, being that they’re in a different ZIP code,” Wilsen said.

Legislature and is governed by a 16 member Board appointed by the Governor of Florida. From its beginning, the purpose of the District has been to improve access to quality healthcare services for residents of West Orange County. This has been achieved through investing in new and expanded facilities in partnership with Orlando Health, the largest provider of healthcare services in West Orange County, and awarding over $2 million in initiative grants since 2012 to non-profits in the community supporting programs that align with the District’s mission of enhancing the overall health and wellbeing of the community. I heard a rumor that Dodges doesn’t do fried chicken anymore so these ladies decided to re-open that idea and made it a WHOLE lot better! “We know we wanted a doughnut shop, but we just didn’t know it was going to take off that fast,” Amanda Eubanks said.

The doughnuts were such a hit at the market that they often would sell out an hour after the market opened, so Amanda created the business’s Facebook page.

And people started talking.

The business got rave after rave on the Winter Garden Rants, Raves and Reviews group.

“These are DELICIOUS,” customers raved on Facebook. “I don’t know how we’ll go back to other doughnuts now.”

Although the business is based out of a Longwood kitchen and delivers to the Greater Orlando area, much of the business has come from eager customers in West Orange. On Facebook, the page went from 100 to 1,000 likes in a matter of two weeks.

The growth was exciting for Amanda Eubanks and Dave Hancock, but because they both worked at Four Rivers, they wanted to make sure they could keep up with it.

“I’m not complaining,” Dave Hancock said. “But we tried to slow it down a little bit. … It was going so full-blown that we didn’t want to make anybody mad.”

To meet demand, they purchased better equipment — a bigger mixer and fryer. They enlisted some family to help with deliveries. They also allowed people to preorder doughnuts before the

DG Doughnuts always is creating new flavors, working to keep people coming back. They experiment with ideas such as Rocky Road, Banana Cream Pie, Key Lime Pie and Peanut Butter and Jelly.

“Some stuff we didn’t think was famous at first, but then at the next market, people will be asking for it,” Brian Eubanks said.

“It’s hard to predict.”

DG Doughnuts is known for thick, full doughnuts with interesting flavors and decoration.

Many of the ideas for doughnut decorating come from Amanda Eubanks’s background in cake decoration. But a lot of it is curiosity and experimenting with different flavors.

When designing some of the more ornate flavors, such as Rocky Road, Dave Hancock will consider texture.

“If you have a smooth glaze doughnut, I try to add some texture to it by adding a cookie or something that’s crumbly on the top, and then I go with an opposite color contrast so it pops out,” he said.

Families enjoyed a breakfast from 8 to 9:45 a.m. and got to put the finishing decorating touches on their bikes, wagons and scooters. Michael. In 1959, they moved to Daytona Beach, where Glenna went to work for General Electric in the space program. When the space program closed in Daytona, she commuted to Plymouth and worked for General Electric’s light bulb and Christmas light division.

In 1970, they moved to Apopka, where she continued to work until they closed. In 1975, she moved to Ocoee. Glenna was one of the first people to go to work in Plymouth and was one of the last 10 to leave when the plant closed.

Glenna Ruth Cox passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016, in Ocoee, Florida. Glenna was born Jan. 2, 1931, in Piney Creek, North Carolina, which is in Ashe County. She was the first child of Winnie and Archie Barton.

Her mom and dad were farmers until 1941, when Glenna was 10 and the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Her dad then went to work as a plant supervisor, and her mom worked for Fisher Body. Their family included three younger brothers and one sister.

Glenna’s first job after graduating high school was working at Eaton Axle, where she made decorations for grills for 1951 Ford cars. Next, she worked for Murray Bicycle Company, where she met and later married her husband, Charlie Cox, who was her inspector at the bicycle company.

Their family grew with the addition of four children, Patrick, Debi, Anthony and

ball, golf, bowling and parasailing. Glenna received numerous awards while working at General Electric and Walmart. She enjoyed playing bingo and luncheons at West Orange Seniors.

Glenna was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Cox; sons, Anthony and Patrick Cox; daughter, Debi Matthews; and granddaughter, Kimberly Couch.

Glenna is survived by a son, Mike (and Sharon) Barton; son-in-law, Mike Matthews; daughter-in-law, Sandy Cox; niece, Karen (and Butch) Frye; grandchildren, Chris, Billy, Bailey and Michelle; six greatgrandchildren; and three greatgreat-grandchildren.

Chandler Bats establishes local foothold The locally-based travel baseball program, which works with youth and high-school age players, has grown to include 11 teams, with a focus on continued player development.

For Jason Slattery, a local resident and former college baseball player, that introduction was to David Chandler, and it came about three years ago.

At the time, Slattery operated two youth travel baseball teams

under the fledgling mantle of Orlando Hard Knocks. David Chandler, the founder of Chandlers Bats — a wood-bat company based out of Pennsylvania — was looking to launch a youth travel ball program to compliment Chandler’s pre-existing highschool aged program, Chandler World.

The reasoning for launching a youth program was simple from David Chandler’s perspective:

building brand awareness with youth players — who generally do not use wood bats — can be challenging. Also, Chandler Bats was founded recently, in 2010.

The success of the new partnership with Slattery was almost instant. Slattery’s two teams from the Hard Knocks days have grown into eight teams for Chandler under the umbrella of Team SEE CHANDLER PAGE 22

n his earlier years, Vincent Burbank, the owner of ICE Golf academy in Ocoee, played hockey.

In college, though, he fell in love with golf.

Years later, he decided to share his passion for golf by helping others excel in the sport — particularly those who might not have an opportunity to, otherwise.

Burbank, a certified U.S. Kids Golf instructor and PGA member, makes his golf academy stand out from the norm by making it his mission “to reach an underserved community within the golf community” with more affordable tuition costs.

“What you normally end up finding is a lot of programs are geared toward either the wellprivileged, or over-privileged, if you will,” Burbank said. “So what I found is, because I come from a middle-income background, is that a lot of times the programs weren’t necessarily put out there for those parents that make just enough money — that, you know, might not receive any scholarships or anything like that.

“So why should they be devoid of the opportunity to train and receive high-end training?” Burbank asks.

Burbank said he noticed a lot of the affordable programs that do exist currently would simply introduce golf to the participants, but fail to offer training for upper-level competition.

So with the goal of providing his students another possible avenue for a college scholarship, Burbank made an effort to develop an economical program that would provide the same tier of golf instruction as more expensive professional programs — ICE Golf was born.

know if it is 100 percent accurate — but this what I can tell you: the schools that I compete with …. for an all-year-long training program, it’ll cost about $55,000 a year,” Burbank said. “Now, granted, that’s with school included, but if you take out school, it’s probably $15,000 a year, maybe even ($20,000).”

While he said he doesn’t have the “cheapest (program) out there,” he assures that his program offers more class time than comparable schools by charging only $25 per one-hour class. If students prefer to do two hours per week instead, he charges $150 per month. Once his students reach level three, he lets them practice five days a week for a discounted monthly rate of $200.

ICE Golf currently operates at two different facilities: Kids Community College in Ocoee, and Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Winter Garden.

of turning his ideas into something tangible and making a difference. The maximum capacity of students they can teach at the moment is 60, but Burbank plans to expand and open a second school in Tampa.

“The hardest thing is trying to juggle doing the things that you know you want to do and at the same time dealing with all the negative responses and the troubles that come with everyday life and opening up a business … managing all the angles that problems can come from and keeping it together,” Burbank said.

Squeeze rebound with pair of wins The Winter Garden Squeeze rebounded from a six-game losing streak this past weekend, picking up a pair of much-needed wins.

Winter Garden (10-12) defeated the Leesburg Lightning 7-5 July 2 and won again July 4 when it hosted the Sanford River Rats, 11-1.

With the pair of wins, the Squeeze find themselves back tied for third place with Altamonte Springs (9-11) and 5.5 games behind the firstplace River Rats (16-7).

The Squeeze will host Winter Park July 7 before a three-day break for the Florida Collegiate Summer League All-Star Game. The All-Star Game will take place at 7 p.m.

July 9 at Sanford’s Memorial Stadium.

De’Lazarus Keys The CFCA basketball team has been competing at various events over the summer and piling up the wins as it goes along. Helping to lead the way has been newcomer De’Lazarus Keys. A 6-foot-8 transfer, Keys had 28 points and 10 rebounds in a win against The First Academy this summer and has shot a high percentage from beyond the arc all summer.

What’s your impression of how the summer season has gone?

I think it’s going good. The more we practice, I think by the time November comes, we’ll be fantastic.

Which win for the team this summer stands out the most?

I think the most impressive win was against The First Academy.

We played like it was a championship game — we wanted to beat them. The past two years, playing for another school, they (TFA) always beat us and I’ve always wanted to beat them.

It’s good. Dante is a great point guard who sees the floor and knows how to attack the rim.

Jacob is a good shooter and a good defensive player.

Who is your favorite professional player?

Kevin Durant. He’s tall and he can put the ball on the floor and shoot. He can create (scoring opportunities) for his teammates. I want to be like him.

Before you settled on basketball, did you try any other sports?

In fifth grade I played baseball.

What’s the last movie you saw in theater?

“Ride Along 2.” It was funny — Kevin Hart was in it and Ice Cube and they’re funny together.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Then, in 2015, David Chandler asked Slattery to add the Chandler World to his plate. Slattery agreed to add the high-school age travel program, but with the stipulation that it relocate its base of operations from the Pennsylvania area down to West Orange County.

It was a bold move, considering the presence of several travel ball programs locally — including a few juggernauts such as the Orlando Scorpions, known for winning national titles and producing consistent Division I talent — but Slattery says he recognized an opportunity to serve players who may require more development.

“I don’t think there was a need for more (travel baseball programs) — I think there’s a need for, what I call, ‘different is better,’” Slattery said. “Our philosophy, in general, is trophies don’t matter. Player development is supreme in our philosophy. We will never sacrifice development for winning.”

Slattery’s focus on continued development has led to a growing program that has roughly 150 players. In addition to a growing interest from local families in joining Chandler’s program in West Orange, Slattery has been able to bring over a number of coaches with professional experience.

Gordie Hershiser, the brother of Orel Hershiser and a former standout pitcher for University the University of Alabama, came aboard from the beginning, and Clyde Williams, a former star for Seminole High in Sanford who was drafted in the third round of the 1998 Major League Baseball Draft by the Montreal Expos, joined later.

For Williams, who had previously been working with a more established youth travel program in the area, the move to join Team Chandler was rooted in wanting to build something special.

“I like ‘from the ground up’ type stuff and (Chandler) gave me a chance to grow with the organization,” Williams said.

That players from Team Chandler, which encompasses ages 10 through 13, can transition into Chandler World (ages 14 through 17) and remain under the same umbrella is somewhat unique as many larger travel organizations

tend to focus on either youth or high-school age.

“We have an opportunity as an organization to train players — the same way — from the time they’re 10 years old to the time they graduate high school,” Slattery said.

Chandler World, which held its first tryout last December at Windermere Prep — the main facility the team practices at — is playing its first season locally this summer with three teams (17U, 16U and 15U). The high-school age program has attracted players from schools including West Orange, Windermere Prep and The First Academy.

“I found out about Chandler through my hitting coach, John Denny,” West Orange catcher Adrian Delgado said. “I like the atmosphere around the coaches — they’re all friendly and they choose to work one-on-one with you.”

The atmosphere is something that the coaches at Chandler hope set the program apart, also.

Though the focus of travel ball is the development of players as individuals and, later, the marketing of individual players to college programs, Slattery hopes to cultivate a team-first culture by holding more team practices than is the norm for travel ball and having the program’s indoor facility in Winter Garden widely available to players.

“If I were to put one word on (the difference), and it is cliche, but it’s passion,” said Hershiser.

“It’s all about having people who truly care about the kid and it’s not about them promoting themselves as a coach and as an adult.”

The youth branch, Team Chandler, will have tryouts at the end of the month on July 30 for the fall season and the high-school program, Chandler World, will conduct tryouts again in December. Though Slattery says he will not grow the program just for the sake of growing it, he does believe the Chandler brand has found the right base of operations — and niche — here in West Orange County.

“The concentration of serious, passionate baseball players is extremely high here,” Slattery said. “I personally believe that West Orange county has, in my view, some of the deepest talent pools in Central Florida.”

High-profile local recruits announce college verbal commitments Ocoee High’s Dorian Jones, West Orange High’s Austin Burton and Dr. Phillips High’s Robert Porcher each made verbal college commitments on June 29 and June 30 last week.

Last week saw a particularly busy pair of days on the recruiting front, locally, as a trio of high-profile football prospects for Ocoee High, Dr. Phillips High and West Orange High announced their preferred destinations for college.

The ball got rolling with Dr. Phillips defensive end Robert Porcher committing to Nebraska.

Porcher, a rising senior who is rated a three-star recruit by 24/7 Sports and a two-star recruit by Rivals, tweeted the news June 29 — selecting the Huskers over 33 other offers that included Arizona, Louisville and UCF, among others.

A day later, West Orange's Austin Burton and Ocoee's Dorian Jones announced their commitOrangeObserver.com ments.

Burton, a rising senior quarterback and two-star prospect as rated by 24/7 Sports, transferred to the Warriors after previously WEST ORANGE

playing for Newton South in the Greater Boston area. After an exceptional performance in West Orange's spring game that saw the signal-caller toss five touchdown passes, recruiting picked up for Burton.

Burton has capitalized on that momentum to make plans to return home for college, announcing his commitment to Austin Burton Boston College via Twitter.

Burton was also offered by UCLA on June 30.

Jones, a talented defensive back who is expected to be a leader on a capable defensive unit for the Knights this fall, committed to Georgia State after fielding offers from Tulane, N.C. State and UTSA, among others.
